To be honest this game is probably the best 2d Mario game. Sure they didn’t add as much as other 2d games, but they didn’t get rid of much either. And they did add some stuff like the acorn suit, boost pads and challenge mode. They even brought back the Mario world style world map which made that game so popular. Altogether, it is the best 2d Mario game. Too bad it came out on the wii u and was the 4th new super Mario bros title which makes a lot of people dislike it. Personally, I loved it and it was great fun.

The acorn is useful for two things you don't seem to realize. First, when you glide with it it immediately sets your x-speed to maximum. Plus, if you twirl jump with it, you can go 6 units up instead of the usual limit of 5. I know you were exaggerating but it's obvious you weren't aware of these things. Just trying to help :)

I love the Koopalings, but some people make good points: their appearances as bosses can get repetitive and they seem to take up spots for more original villains. Look at NSMB DS, then look at every other NSMB game after that and you'll see what I mean.
