Your yummy face is getting better..making me green with envy!
Best Ever Food Review Show . Sonny, Pho in South Vietnam is always better. They have more authentic beef flavor and more variety meats. Second, can you ask the cook/owner at ănăn (eat eat) saigon how was he justified his bowl of pho or a sandwich for $100? was it all because of his labor ... or the ingredients? Seriously??? No matter how special or a very famous vietnamese chef, none would think that they can value their best vietnamese creation that would worth more than $35 USD a plate or in a bowl (unless with lobster) ... esp in the US, ... California, Texas or New York. That would be suicide for their business. If you are Vietnamese, you would ask your money back.
Keith P. .
he use premium cuts of beef and add waymore work to to the broth

In Asia for 2.20$ : a soup, a basket of herbs, a bowl full of lime, a bowl of sprouts.
In North America for 2.20$. : maybe one kind of herb... If they made a deal.
Nope , 2$ pho is in the City.
In my countryside, it only 1$ =))
actually we are thinking about making Pho more expensive cuz it’s a lot of effort to make compare to other fresh food dishes from Japan, USA or stuff like that, which we are all willing to pay 5,6 dollar to eat, but for some reason, Vietnamese people always underestimate Pho and sell it for cheap.
@@Duygolf 5$ pho is not made for average Vietnamese people. If i made it 5$, i would sell it in big cities, sell it to foreigners, even to some wealthy Vietnamese who are willing to pay to support Vietnamese cuisine. Just like how Vietnamese people come to USA and make 5$ pho. Pho is generally harder to make with fresh ingridient, compare to fast food like KFC, McDonald, Pho is cheaper, but having higher quality. That should not be the case in big cities.
Ted Danville stop trying to make things more expensive 🖕🏼
what are purchase power parities?
I love this show!! I'm glad you defined the differences between Northern and Southern Pho. All my life, I've been teased for eating my pho plain because I love the natural taste of the broth and I love the Northern pho. Now I must get my pho on.
I had never liked pho until I came to Vietnam then I realized it's the Southern style that I didn't like. The pho in Hanoi was so delicious. I don't know how to say it but the Northern pho feels more "European" like it has a more pure meat taste, also closer to the French pot-au-feu, the dish that inspired pho. I think my least favorite things of the Southern pho are the herbs (especially the raw bean sprouts) and the tougher type of noodles.
Tôi thấy anh bạn quấn khăn có nhận xét khá chính xác về món phở.hơi muộn màng nhưng tôi thấy thú vị.cảm ơn bạn đã có đánh giá tốt về ẩm thực Việt Nam!
Born and lived in Hanoi for 15 years, then have been living in Ho Chi Minh City: I love both Northern and Southern phở!! 😍
There is no objectively better phở as Northern and Southern phở tap into your food senses differently: one focuses on the exquisite refinement of the broth, phở noodles, and meat, while the other focuses on the sensory harmony created from diverse ingredients and “kick” from the stronger broth. You may prefer one or another, or learn to love both!
I actually have been away from my home, Vietnam, for some time and find this video particularly heartwarming... ❤️ Thank you, Sonny and team for making this great video!

So do i. I born and lived in Saigon for 16 years before moved to USA. I never had a chance to eat Pho in Ha Noi so i have no idea about Northern Pho Style but it looked so yummy. PS: we dont have a fresh noodle in here so i totally forgot how it tasted. :(

Peter is a very creative and talented chef. For the $100 challenges, he really makes it special. Unlike other chefs who would just make it bigger or put more extravagant ingredients then call it a day. You can feel his passion for cooking, and his excitement with your challenges.
Lies again? Carlsberg Phoenix
P
I think that’s exactly what Peter is doing. Makes it bigger and call it a day. All those ingredients you can find at regular pho restaurants. Nothing is special to make that bowl worth $100. Maybe $10. You have to understand $10 is a lot to regular people.
@@CuongNguyen-rs4ft yeah, i went in late 2022 and it was very underwhelming. dont get me wrong, it was good. but $100?? they are also serving a different one from the one they made in this episode. i did a mini vlog mukbang on it on my channel
@@CuongNguyen-rs4ft You can say that to about every overpriced dish in the world. The challenge originally came from the channel, not the restaurant and the only way the dish can meet up the price is by using expensive ingredients. However, making Pho by using consomme broth is new, normally you wouldn't be able to do so when serving too many customers. As broth is the most important part of Pho, I say the cook was creative
You BOTH are HILARIOUS discussing the differences of the North & South Pho. I don’t know if I could choose. They both look AWESOME!! I’d have to taste them both.
I love your show! Thanks for showing it to the world. To me both North and South have their differences, but that is what make them both equally good. I love both.

I''m from North Vietnam and Pho is said to have occured first from there as well, plus when Northern people fled to South it was when pho was popularized in the South... I think it's silly to say North or South Viet pho is the best or even compare it. Why trying to polarize it, because at the end of the day this is OUR national Vietnamese dish, and I could care less if the pho I got served was from North or South as long I like it :) Just my opinion though
Jenny Kim Right on, I like your comment. and I already vented out my opinion.... haha
uhh, best comment everrr
lol I can’t eat it 😭😭😭
im in vietnam lets go out for some pho
Basically, French colonialists ate beef and the locals got the leftover bones. The locals were then taught how to make Pot au Feu with them. Add vietnamese noodles and pho was born.
I wish a pho shop here would serve northern style. Every pho shop around me (Southwest Virginia) is super sweet. I prefer the more savory flavors.
An argument can be made the Northern is too bland. Also, the Northen Style Pho in this video isn't traditionally how it's done

I love the dynamic pho debate between Sonny and Andrew. Very entertaining lol.
Pho originated in the North of Vietnam. It traditionally has a natural and elegant taste. It is unfair to say that Northern Pho is affected by Chinese cuisine. Traditional Northern Pho originally has broth made from beef bone, cinnamon and star anise.. (This broth has a refined taste) poured on rice noodles with a small pinch of onions and maybe other impropriate ingredients which are unsatisfactory to Vietnamese folks.
When imported into the Central and South of Vietnam, Pho has been adjusted its formula to catch the taste of local customers for most restaurants’ business interests. Pho is then influenced by Chinese cuisine because of Chinese appearance in the region.. Chinese cuisine is very sophisticated using a lot of spices and raw materials. Although the North is near Chinese border, traditional Northern dishes are simple and make use of natural flavors of ingredients.
Taste varies locally: refined in the North - spicy in the Middle- sweet in the South..
Taste decides a lot, it’s why many people refuse to eat famous dishes in the world.
You cannot compare an original dish with its reproduction under a local taste. Has anyone ever said Northern Banh Xeo is better than Southern Banh Xeo, or Bun Bo Hanoi is better than Bun Hue? I assert that no one dared to do so. Basically, the original cooking formula is partly changed to match with taste of each region - so there is nothing to argue which is the better one. Foreigners may find themselves happy wherever they come to eat Pho, even in restaurants outside the territory of Vietnam where the cooking technique does not reach the pinnacle of Pho. Have an appetite!

Taste is subjective. To me the simplicity of Hanoi pho makes it much better. I don't know how to say it but the Hanoi pho feels more "European" like it has a more pure beef bone taste. It is also closer to the French pot-au-feu, the dish that inspired pho.

Southern Vietnamese cuisine has more sweet and sour flavours whereas Northern dishes are generally more salty. Both my parents are from the South, so I’m pretty biased when I say that Southern cuisine is way better!
Amy Hart northern style isn't just salty, it has depth.
Doodah Gurl Northern foods have a crazy amount of msg thougb
cuisine of the Southern Vietnamese is a little too sweet for me
I love salty but it’s good everyone has different taste buds
Well, as a Korean-American living in a Vietnamese neighborhood in Chicago(I know that sounds weird) there are a ton of Pho restaurants here and they all serve the southern style which I think is too sweet. I wish someone around here would serve the nothern style.
He speaks English very clear, fast but .. .can catch up. Very useful in listening and knowing many interesting things
If you ate Pho in the states and wanted to try in Vietnam. I recommend trying the southern version because this is the same version in the US, the flavor is just gonna be a lot richer because in Vietnam it is very hot and we eat more salts.
This my favorite video you've ever made! Keep it up. Love this style
+Tim Nordahl thanks!
i feel like i would like the type of pho broth they make in hanoi but i also like all the extra accouterments they give you in saigon (especially the bean sprouts!)
soo good to watch this!
For every one who commented that North Pho is bland.. I want to give you some extra information. The way that South Pho is made and serve makes it easier to succeed and be tasty. It can hardly fail. But North style Pho requires so much skills and experiences to make out the original delicate flavor and aroma.. which many in-experienced Pho shops fail miserably. In some cases "bland" is still a too polite word. There are hundreds of Pho shops around Hanoi.. many of them serve excellent quality while many others do not. The diference is like heaven and hell. Unlike in the South which hardly fails you.. in the North you have to get to the right location. Its a MUST.
Some more infos. There are maybe more than 10 kinds of Pho in the North (Pho Chin, Tai, Nam, Bap, Gau, Nam, Sot vang, Tai lan...). All taste heavenly if u get to the right place. Some of my favorite Pho places are as below.
1. Pho Thin on Lo duc street
2. Pho Hang Da street near Hang Da church
4. Pho on Duong Thanh street (actually Duong Thanh is a place where so many delicacies are sold). Oh yum!
5. and a place in the market near my house which sells very cheap at 20 k (less than a dollar).. but breathing the aroma coming from it alone is already so satisfying.
Thanks for the information. Hope to visit Vietnam one day soon. From Caroline, all the way from Canada!
Thank you for the info! I’m so hungry now…
"My favorite broth is actually alcohol" I sip my wine and give you an imaginary high five...
Nah wine or champagne 🍾
High quality, awesome piece.
My parents used to have businesses in VN. One of it was a pho restaurant. My mom , and a lady who helped her had to sleep early, then woke up early to cook pho soup . It took 6 to 7 hours to cook the broth.
Running a restaurant business is not easy. The prep work for all dishes is far longer, laborious than customers can imagine or willing to pay. I waited tables growing up and now when I dine out, I make sure I tip the staff as much as I can afford because I know the work is involved.
I live in the U.S., so the only Pho I've ever had has been here, which I presume is predominantly Southern style, which I do find to be too sweet at times. Would love to try the Northern Pho!
that must've been so phocking good

In the north there are many type of pho like pho with stir fried/sauteed beef/chicken, pho with tendons beef and so on, not just the basic type that you ate in this show. And you can have aditional raw vegy like been spourt and other type aswell.

It be so cool to see a white mom cooking pho for her family. Just an image I like to see
Mon????
My dads Pho is the best
U know that almost 90 percent of Vietnamese people eat outside ?
I’ve always wanted to visit Japan, but all of these videos are reaaally making me want to go to Vietnam as well.
Maybe Hanoi or Saigon.
Seems like a great country.
You are the king of food shows.
Nice show, thanks a lot.
Southern style fits better with the Western taste for savoury food. Stronger base, heavier mix of herbs and spices and meat cuts. Northern style is lighter and all about the broth. Different philosophies tbh.
“Thanks for treating me, you make me feel like a special lady” 😂😂💙3:45
Researched in the mid- 19 th century.
The origin of Pho is in Sai Gon,created by a Vietnamese chef in the French army. Not north Vietnam.
6 năm rồi xem vẫn không chán
"you've made me feel like a special lady" lol charming Sonny
14:41 did he say fancy as “pho” I love him 💖
I have had pho in many different places in Vietnam. The best Pho I had was in Hanoi at Pho thin 13 Lo Duc. In the South it was a little sweet still good. In the Northwest a little salty. In the old quarter I had beef Pho was no broth.
Yes, I know Pho Thin. It is very famous in VietNam.
this dude always give me positive vibes
I want to thank you and your team for creating this channel. After Anthony Bourdain, you're the man now! Please keep doing what you're doing. Your videos show how passionate you are about what you do. Stay-at-home order in Cali, no problem!
My family is from the north of Vietnam (Hanoi) But we prefer south vietnam pho (in Saigon) 😋
Hannah’s Here I’m from south vietnam but I live in U.S
Nice bro :))
that herb he(Andrew) asked the producer is called rice paddy leaf in English, originally it was not accompanied with Pho but then 5-7 years ago the southern region dwellers started using it in every hot pot dishes they found, ultimately this comes in southern Pho as the norm. But to be honest, that strong taste of this leaf destroys the over all Pho beef broth flavor, so not many people appreciate it.
You and your team have been making a lot of fun, informative videos about street food to date. Please, keep it up as your videos are really something else than the normal clips on the market.

I love both North Phở and SG's Phở... if they can use all the topping and combine with North broth would make the best phở
what do you think about the one without broth?
You remind me of Anthony Bourdain minus the drinking and smoking. Educational, funny, informative and not afraid to try something.
