Can you do this by just loosening the camshaft clips and leaving the phaser attached? Just get the camshaft high enough to pull the rockers out?

I’ve heard of people doing that but it’s not recommended. You have a very high chance of damaging other parts when you do that.

@@chiefyoung does the lifter rods need to be replaced also or just the rockers? I'm at 470,000 KMs

You won’t be able to determine that until you start taking it apart. If you’ve been driving it for a while with the ticking noise and it’s a very noticeable noise now it’s possible your cam lobes are damaged. I don’t think your rods will have any wear issues though.

Thanks. I’ve done that job twice so far and both had their own challenges.

@@chiefyoung I respect that! Your work here was very impressive! I'm running a 2019 Wrangler with this engine and I can't tell for sure, but I believe I have this issue. I'm not 100% sure. I haven't done a proper check. My ticking happens randomly while driving.

The first time I heard it was on a Grand Cherokee, at first I thought it was just the valves knocking. After some research I found quickly that this is a common issue and Chrysler didn’t seem to care to fix the issue.

what were the special tools you mentioned in the beginning of the video?
did you just slide the phasers off the cam one at a time? mahalo 🤙

I put a link in the description for the tools needed. You’ll want to do one at a time to mitigate any possible issues. Just take your time, can be a very frustrating project even as an experienced wrench turner.

I have a question in reference to your GCSS-A tutorials. Did you require approval from whomever to make those videos?

No, several are being used at ALU.

I have a question if you don't mind, I am wanting to put melling rocker arms which is what you used yeah? 2017 Pacifica but for some reason everything shows that that won't fit. Do you know why that could be? It's the base model, not flex fuel or auto stop/start or hybrid. I just really hate having to put in same crappy Mopar rocker arms.

How long do you think it took? Im generally good with tools but Ill probably have to do this soon also. I know its coming from the right bank (as you look at the vehicle). not entirely sure Ill do both or just one side.

This Jeep took about 6hrs. But that was mainly due to the PCV screw which if you only do the D/S as your says won’t be an issue. Getting to the little screw is a massive pain. If you’re only doing the D/S, have all the necessary tools and are good with mechanics you can knock it out in 2-4hrs. Really depends on your experience and how efficient you work.

All other videos show taking phaser off, but you seemed to skip that step can you tell how in more details?

I did remove them but only one at a time and just enough to remove the cam. Taking them out could cause issues with timing. They only set on the cam an inch or so.

Ok, so I got another question for you, I put a crescent wrench on my cam to try and jiggle the tool in place, but the whole cam is moving, does that mean I need a new phaser, or what?

It was likely in between its rotation. If both holes are pointed up then it will have play because all of the tension is off of the rockers.

Living on Schofield is like living in PNW. We don’t like people or the beach enough to deal with the traffic, so we stay close to home. lol
