      @sigspearthumb5237 I almost always lock her up to fighting drag. But I WILL back it off maybe 25% sometimes so you can get the rod out of the rod holder easier when a fish is screaming away. 👍👍

    EXCELLENT instructional. Loved the simple opening demo on technique and the follow up out on the water. Video is a great refresher and double check of my circle hook practices. What size circle hooks do you use 4 cut bait I've been using 6.0 or 7.0 but used either 8 or 9.0 seemed better hook up mabe anyway grate video

    Question: What is the thought process on upsizing hook size if going from J to circle?

    • @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS
      @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS  2 місяці тому +1

      @@AquariumPlantLab It’s mainly for INLINE Circle hooks, but it can help with offsets too. It’s just something I have found when speaking to lots of people that struggle to make the conversion. Going up 1 or 2 sizes makes the hook a bit more forgiving should you still accidentally set the hook hard like with a J. If offsets are legal where you fish, increasing the offset a bit more with pliers also makes the hook more forgiving should you yank hard to set the hook by mistake. Once you feel comfortable with the conversion you can size down and stick with in-lines.

      @@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS excellent thank you that’s along the lines of what I was thinking but wanted to confirm. I made the switch to circles for largemouth bass and have been having probably about a 30% hookup rate but I did land my personal best by three pounds with the circle. Using inline 1/0. I’ll try a tad bigger and give an offset a shot too. Im using a hand reel. Thanks again!

      @@kent7525 Thanks brother!! Palomar is my knot for every line type. Hooks with a straight shank and a Palomar is my bread and butter although, I do also use a Trilene knot on braid and Fluoro when a Palomar knot is a pain and would forfeit too much tail ends to trim off. For instance, tying a big plug with 3 big trebles requires a big loop to pass the bait through. Of course, using a speed clip fixes that issue and we use them more and more. 👍👍

    When you say move up 2 sizes, do you mean bigger or higher in number? So if I'm using a size 4 baithholder, do I go up in size to a 2 circle, or up in number to a 6 circle? Thanks.

    • @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS
      @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS  4 роки тому

      I mean move to a larger hook by 2 sizes. Circle hooks tend to run a bit smaller than a J hook in the same brand, shanks are usually shorter on circles so you can get away with the larger hook. The larger gap really helps the circle hook to grab hard.

    • @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS
      @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS  4 роки тому +1

      There will be the biggest difference between black and silver (nickel). I prefer black. The color red disappears under water and appears black unless the red gets scraped off, then it will reveal that silver color. For bottom fishing any color will be good, but I wouldn’t want silver on suspended baits where sunlight will hit the hooks. That’s just my preference.

      Hey brother. If we are drifting we hook Bunker in the mouth and out the top lip. Use 1-3 oz depending on how deep. In this video you see my Son catch one on a live Bunker drifted with 2oz pencil weight. You can see it when it comes up. ua-cam.com/video/drDn6ceFdbk/v-deo.html. Right around 7:00. After that I show how we rig when anchored. Hook in belly right behind the anal fin, add 1 to 5oz. If current is really ripping hook them in the mouth instead. 👍👍👍

    I was striper surf fishing of a beach in Maine with baitrunner. I used clam and squid on circle hooks. I was getting big bites but could not catch anything. When that reel was on ( the second light drag.....aka the baitrunner)...for a second or three...they would spit it out the minute I reeled or yanked the rod. Rod is a 10-11 foot Tsunami. Reel is a Shimano baitrunner 4500. I dont know what I was doing wrong but it just didn't work...lost allot of fish...also a very big one...that I had on rod fighting for 1 minute then lost it. Is it the knot on the hook or the size of hook ( #3/0 to 4/0? The rod? Can you please help me....or explain what im doing wrong.🙏? There are no dumb questions brother!! A smart man knows he doesn’t know everything about everything.
      On a bait runner go ahead and crank to set the main drag. Pump and take means to pump the rod upward and then crank (take) the rod down to the fish. and repeat. Always start to crank slightly before dropping the rod. The idea is to fight the fish with the rod and not the reel. This technique Never lets the Rod straighten out.
