Capt Mike Your channel has taught me so much! I am a captain in the lower keys and as you know the fisheries are awesome here but if things aren’t done properly many fish are lost. From throwing the cast net, tackle choice or safety, you cover it all! Well done Tight lines! Capt Tony
Great video! I used to doubt circle hooks but now when bait fishing for catfish and other huge fish, I use debarbed circle hooks. I don't have to stress about setting the hook as much and catch and release is so much easier.
Capt Mike, your videos are so well done and loaded with the best information on tackle and techniques for catching more fish. From the easy throw method on cast nets, to minimizing tackle, your instructional content has helped me enjoy my time on the water. Please keep the videos coming, they are much enjoyed. Tight Lines my friend!!
To start off your video is one of the best that I have seen in a long time.. Most important is that circle hooks are the best to use for catch and release fishermen...I have been using circle hooks for about ten years and haven't gut hooked any fish...To be redundant your videos are great...Sy
@@ReelReports I like learning from your experiences, great video production! Capt. Mike, I'm having trouble deciding on whether to use straight or offset circles. I primarily fish south Fla piers and bridges for medium to larger fish, mostly snook. So I would like your thoughts on circle size and design as well as braided mainline/ leader suggestions, want to not go overboard on any of these. My rod is MH, 7ft., 20-40 line, 4oz.... I'm not a giant fish hunter but I would like to have decent terminal tackle just in case. Some piers are quite elevated. I like pinfish and plus size shrimp and Gulp! baits as well. Any help very appreciative, thanks man!

Yoooooooo thannnkkk forr the viddddd Tbh ive been fishing from the pier for a min so i decided to venture out an dis info is gana make my game to on point ima post a pic. Thanks
I use circle hooks, thread fin shad for hybrid stripers and yellow cats; West Texas surf fishing in the local lakes. We use the bait clickers and let the fish run, pull the rod out of the holders, point rod tips at the fish, reel the slack as we lift the rod tip, works every time. Great video.
Good TIPS !!! I will surely try using CIRCLE hooks for porgies. I live in NJ and there's still more days left for porgy fishing. Thank you for the video.
I love circle hooks! You’re preaching to the choir here. I noticed a lot of mustad hooks in your hands. I use Owner Mutu light which are perfect for inshore and smaller species.... probably not a good idea to target sailfish with though. I think 5/0 is the largest in the mutu light. Great video, you got a sub from San Diego.
Thanks for all the info. I have a question regarding the loop knot you tie. What’s the advantage of using a loop knot for live bait fishing with a straight eye circle hook as opposed to a tug knot or snell knot? I would think the bait will swim naturally wherever it wants to go regardless of the knot that’s tied.
Good info capt. on a side note how do you feel about the single outboard. If you could would you prefer twins. How far do you run out feeling comfortable. Thanks
Great instructional video on the circle hooks, I’ve been using snelled circle hooks for cat fishing for years and you are 💯 % correct about how to let the hook do the work. Thanks
Great video man but i have 2 questions first can you still use a snell not on a straight eye circle hook and 2nd when fishing with a circle hook do you leave the bell of the reel open?
You pretty much kind of got me sold!! Being a lifelong J-hook guy these circle hooks sound EASY!! Maybe it will be easier to show my 5 and 6 son and daughter how catch some fish so they not so bored cause they miss them lol
Another great video. Thank you Capt Mike. I was surprised to see a braided line on your reel (Ithink that was braided line). I always see 20lb mono line on your reels. When do you use braided line and what size (lb) do you you use?
Does the same technique work for snook? Because i was fishing with pinfish i and i saw the eating them and taking them away but when i reel in the hook just came out so frustrating
@@oscarleon4652 The gap (spacing) in the hook might of been too small. I would need to know how you are hooking the bait. Did you let the fish eat for a few seconds before coming tight?. We can't catch them all, but we can improve our hookup ratio with some simple tweaks.
@@ReelReports mmm, now that i think the space was not that big. I have used big circle hooks for tarpon and have no problem. But since i was using pinfish, i did not want to use a very big hook. I hook them in the head, before the dorsal fins
Rob from ESPN's The Outdoorline, on his last radio show, recommended about 9/0 for Strait of Juan De Fuca halibut. But "J" hook, not circle hook. Alaska they'll go to circle hooks.
Hey buddy, got a question for you...... Will the circle hooks still work and set themselves when the rod is in a rod holder? The rod in a holder is typically pointing up, and you said point it at the fish, 1 2 3 and then lift up.... fish on. A lot of times I will have several lines out and just wondered what your thoughts were on that. Thank you for any tips you might have.....
How would you recommend using these hooks casting from shore in a heavy current for stripped bass using a 4 or 5 ounce weight? The hit so fast the hook needs to be set almost immediately or they drop the bait. Massachusetts is now inforcing us to is these hooks. Well they are basically segregating shore fisherman as we are the only ones forced to do so.
I've done a loop to get rid of split rings on artificial lures, but I've never considered for use with live bait hooks. Have you shared in another video the thought behind doing loop with live bait hooks?
Generally, the reason you want to use a loop knot for straight eye circle hooks is because although a lot of fishermen argue the "trigger effect". The problem with the "trigger effect" is it's not scientifically sound if you think about it mechanically. Because the "trigger effect" is when the line comes out of the eye of the hook at a 45 degree angle. But the problem with that is when your line comes out of the eye of the hook at a 45 degree angle. That causes the hook to have to travel farther in order for the hook to make contact with the corner of the fishes mouth. Because instead of being at a 90 degree angle decreasing the amount that the hook has to turn to hook the fish. Now due to the "trigger effect" it's in a 45 degree angle causing the hook to have to travel more in order to make contact and hook the fish. Whereas if you were to just use a loop knot you get the same range of motion as a snell knot but you wouldn't have to worry about the hook having to travel farther to hook the fish. Because the line would come out a straight 90 degree angle from the eye of the hook decreasing the amount it has to travel to hook the fish in the first place.
I’m from CT and fish for striped bass and blues. I started using circle hook (octo hooks) last year with live bait, chunked bait and have lost a great number of fish... fish takes bait, give it a few seconds to eat, start reeling until you feel weight and fight the fish from there and it always feels like i have the fish on but most times they spit the hook! What am i doing wrong? 8 times out of 10 the fish spits the hook. I’m looking at this video now because last night I literally lost a great number of fish. I changed to the regular J hooks and boom! Got the first one of the night (striper).
one thing i just realised is to make sure you cut off the tag end of the line on these hooks as close as possible because they can interfere with them doing what they are suppose to do
Try tighten your line. I fish in a dam where the current is strong and I usually keep my line a bit tight because the fish are moving faster and so they hook themselves right away.
I like black. There was a buzz about red hooks years ago as they said it indicated a wounded baitfish, but black has always been best for me as a live bait hook. For shrimp as bait and such, silver is fine too.
Hi Mike, love your videos. Can you use circle hooks without bait? I Would love to troll for tuna and mahi using squid skirts or feather lures with circle hooks. Would they be as effective as j hooks? Thanks in advance for your reply

Loop knots, while usually weaker knots, do indeed allow more movement of the live bait.
