I'm in multiple groups on Facebook that have thousands of members. Maybe , maybe at best 1 in a hundred ride their bikes for commuting. They all ride to ride. many riding for a half a day easily, both sport bikes and cruisers. For this to be an "amazing commuter". the cost would have to be around $5000 or less. The Cost should equal the benefit. This bike, nor any EV does. You could make an argument that they are great to have as a back up form of transportation should there be a gas shortage like what happened on the East coast for about 2 weeks. That is the best use case. and that is good use. I've looked at them for that reason alone. 73 miles as stated in the video is HORRIBLE. Every single time I go out to ride I do that and more . After running 73 miles on the bike in the Vid, you are going to be sitting somewhere for HOURS waiting for it to charge. Where as even a Grom you just fill up and go. A Grom is a very capable commuter depending on the commute. All these EVs have a stupid cost for what you actually get.

Fast forward 10 years and the Livewire one hasnt changed since Age of Ultron, and the new S2 line has limited range for a premium price. • @ADingoTookMyDasco

The bike looks great, but Livewire are targeting the completely wrong section of the market. While they're going for the premium end, down here in Australia Vmoto (up 27.9%) knocked Suzuki (down 18.3%) out of 5th spot last year selling just 2 motorcycles. Their lineup consists of an electric scooter & an electric motorcycle, both priced at around $8,000 dollarydoos ($5,225 USD). And that price includes all taxes & registration costs. The only brands that sold more than Vmoto last year were, in order, Honda (up 1.2%), Yamaha (down 12.9%), KTM (down 0.9%) & Kawasaki (down 31.7%).
EV motorcycles are a great commuter bike option, but that end of the market is predominantly looking for a cheap & economical platform. I, for example, commute on a KTM Duke 200 & leave the Aprilia at home for fun on the weekends, and all of my friends who have more than one bike do the same. It's nice to have a flagship model with enough torque to affect the rotation of the Earth, but the market is far more interested in entry level options. If more mainstream manufacturers enter this end of the market they can clean up.Right now though they're practically handing sales to the electric bicycle market by not even competing.

These bikes make sense with today’s technology. The livewire bikes however good they are, are a hard sell at $15500 for the range as there are so many motorcycles that offer better practicality for about half the cost. My brother in law runs an electric car which costs about the same as a car with similar performance but if he charges it at home overnight costs about $13 for 250 to 300 miles which is cheaper than me putting petrol in my 350 meteor. A $8000 scooter would I expect cost about the same to run per mile which I could justify a lot more easily even if the bike was just a town bike.

The electric motorcycle company that comes out with a way to have a second gear for freeway use is going to open up this category. It would allow for so much greater range at that top end speed.
Agree with you so much about 72V. You got Ryvid, Land, and Lyric Voodoo at the $9k range and Surron, Talaria, Onyx, and custom builds at the $5-6k range. I think LiveWire should be in both markets. It is a great way to channel customers through their product range as they grow. And for the customer, it’s awesome because a lot of the work on these bikes right now is on your own or if you’re lucky enough to find a mechanic who specializes in electric “hyper” bikes.
Especially at the lower range with Onyx going out of business and Surron and Talaria being essentially electric mini “dirt” bikes. A LiveWire version of the Onyx RCR would be sick.

You're making a mistake there. If there were any use for gearboxes on electric vehicles, they would have them (and I believe some cars do). But they offer little or no benefit for efficiency. Electric motors don't care much at which RPM they run and have pretty much linear characteristics, particularly in the usable range. You wouldn't save energy and extend the range with a gearbox, quite the contrary, you'd achieve the opposite because you'd make the vehicle heavier and increase transmission losses.
I believe extending the range would involve using dual-motor setups, with different motor types (permanent magnet vs. induction motors) - but the gain would have to be high enough to compensate for the higher weight.

Um, I just need to clarify a few things that Spite may not understand correctly, I am very deep into EV's and I am located in Namibia, so, before someone wants to have a go at me as being a fan boy.....
Spite, the battery pack at 10,5kWh will never be able to do DC fast charging, this is just impossible at it's size, the reason being is the "P" rating inside the batteries, there are just to little of them to to make 50kW or even 100kW charging possible, the most you could do and even this would be a very big stretch would be 20kW. Maximum charge rates per cell is the limiting factor, doing 2C on a cell will drastically shorten the life of the battery cell, resulting in a very quick death. It just can't be done, not safely in any case. To do this, one would need a bigger battery pack with a higher "P" rating. Doing this would obviously increase range as well.
Next, Using an EV at Highway speeds even though Elon says it can be done, will just NEVER be able to compete with an ICE motor, It just can't there is no way in hell, not without a gearbox, and not an off the shelf gearbox, so, use an EV where it should be used.... In town, An ICE motor gets slaughtered every time in town because of the efficiency it has over the ICE motor, and, use an ICE motor where it shines.... The wide open road....
One thing I would like to say is, thank you for everything you put into making these video's it is much appreciated...

@@482jpsquared I am sorry, but, please do tell me why range at highway speeds drains the battery?
      A hint?
It has to do with the amount of current needed to sustain higher speeds and the frequency at which this is being delivered. A second gear for high speed driving would be a benefit....
This is a flaw, I may not have a tesla but have done my fair share of EV tuning and riding... High power ebikes......
And they too suffer from the same high speed problems, bringing down the motor RPM would most certainly be of very big use thereby bringing down the amount of current needed to maintain a higher speed...

It makes no sense for this thing to be used in the city. In a proper city you have bike lanes and infrastructure for bicycles. With that said, any normal bike or e-bike is going to be 200x better. You don't have to worry about where to park it, you don't need to own a garage with charging etc. You won't even have to worry about getting a license and insurance in most cases. Even a tiny scooter makes more sense in a proper city than an 85 hp 500 lb motorcycle.

You can’t lane filter/split in the US. So what’s the point of a “city cruiser” motorcycle when you’ll be stuck in traffic with everyone else while an electric bicycle can zoom by. Not having a sufficient range for twisty road riding means this thing is now useless both practically and emotionally for my motorcycle purposes.

  • @testbacon7011
    @testbacon7011 9 місяців тому

Big electric motorcycles just aren't practical yet with their high cost and low range. Even after the many years we've been promised that better battery tech is just around the corner they still aren't there yet. So, since they aren't practical and aren't likely to become practical in the next decade, the manufacturers so lean into the impracticality: Give us a low slung hard tail bobber/chopper with a basic bikini fairing or low wind screen. Don't give us any body panels but either hide the components/wiring or make them pretty enough that they're proud to show them off. No one will care about the range because no one would ever consider taking it long distances anyway. No rear suspension means less parts and lower cost. The tiny fairing and low slung stance would backdoor into better aerodynamics and lest drag area, thus more range on a smaller battery which results in reduced cost. If electric motos are going to be impractical let them be fun and affordable impractical.
