The actor Richard Todd who played the Glider troops leader that captured Pegasus bridge, was an actual paratrooper, who landed on D day and was in fact at Pegasus bridge on that day of days. It’s an amazing story
@@Pavlovshouse-ud5ek Yeah Todd was the Oxe and Bucks Commando that swam in the river for recon and later reported to Major Howard about the German Mortars.
What a movie! 42 international stars with 4 hours running time. 20th century Fox's masterpiece. The WW II is fought on silver screen. The D Day ambush wAs remarkable. Great movie. I wish it is re-released now in the wake of 84th anniversary.

I loved this film when it first came out. It started a fascination with D-day that has lasted since 1994. Having learned a lot since then I’m afraid it shows the Americans desperately fighting, and the Germans and the French. Apart from Pegasus Bridge (apparently defended by 8 Germans) the British stroll ashore with merry quips, jests and bagpipes, the only opposition being a bit of shellfire and Luftwaffe strafing. The Canadians weren’t there.
When I was a kid (40 years ago) I thought The Longest Day was fictional like most of the films at that time (Dirty Dozen, Kelly's Heros, Where Eagles Dare etc) So to find out 90% of it was true to history when I got a little older was what got me into researching the war and the people in it.
If anyone here have the black and white Blu-ray which was colorized, if you can please share a link. I would like to have the Blu-ray in colorized as a souvenir. The technicolor copy or the studio colorized version is only in dvd and resolution is not good. Thanks and appreciate a response.
