    I do really appreciate your videos, I am a subscriber and generally ‘like’ them… put PLEASE STOP appropriating Churchill’s famous speech, acknowledging the huge and critical debt owed to the few hundred hard pressed RAF fighter pilots of many nations who, in 1940, over many months, denied the Germans the Air Superiority that would have been vital to cover their planned invasion of the British Isles which, if successful, would have won them WWII at a stroke (and I would be speaking and writing German and ‘heiling’ some descendant or nominated successor to some toothbrush moustached ‘king madman!). I’m sure, if pushed, you could find an apposite quote from some American citizen of note which covers the similarly epic actions of the 506th without resorting to, what is effectively, ‘stolen valour’ (US = valor). Thanks.

What your film left out was the fact that Sink was ordered to train a Regiment as tough as the German SS. I think he did a pretty good job. I am at a loss as to why Colonel Sink was so draconian in his dismissal of the 9 men for returning late from furlough (leave as we call it in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧), he was right about them being disciplined as they should have returned early, by a day maybe 2, the men knew that the United States 🇺🇸 transportation system was in a mess and that they couldn’t guarantee getting to base on time, military personnel (especially in units that are supposedly the best in their respective country)are supposed to have the brains to realise that and should not rely upon a timetable, they should be able to Improvise, Adapt and Overcome, and those men didn’t do that, however, after all the cost of training and equipping them I would have thought that the military brass (except Colonel Sink) would not want to flush the cost down the toilet, yes they made a mistake but I don’t think it warranted the action that Sink took. Surely those men should have been brought up on charges before he did what he did, and they should have had their opportunity to defend themselves, but so far @ 6:02 it doesn’t appear that they did, and even though they didn’t I’m sure that given the choice of being drummed out of the regiment and some other form of punishment like doing basic training all over again, maybe doing some other physical punishment that would ingrain into them that failing to do exactly or more than any orders given and on time, they would have accepted that, they could have been made to wear the uniform of their previous unit until they were deemed to have been punished enough. I’m sure that some people would disagree with me, and that is fine, but I stand by my opinion 100%, other paratroopers would think that they could be drummed out for the slightest infraction of military law, or worse, Colonel Sinks personal list of infractions and disciplinary measures, and that would hurt morale and the determination to be the best of the best, unit cohesion in such a special, and relatively small, regiment is almost certainly going to have a breakdown in that respect. I think that Colonel Sinks behaviour would have been outside of his authority and would have needed support from the military brass who were further up the command chain, otherwise he would have left himself open to criticism at best, and disciplinary action at worst. I watched your episode about the pathfinder jump into Bastogne last night, and I think Colonel Sink got that question of the Silver star wrong as well.

    • @WorldWarTruth
      @WorldWarTruth 5 годин тому

      Thanks for the post and I totally agree with you. I don't really know if a regimental commander has to answer to anybody as far as 'drumming out' parades go - probably not? It just seems to me that he was on a power trip. I think that his rejection of the silver stars to the Bastogne pathfinders was even more unjust than booting men out of the PIR. Sending out unnecessary patrols so close to the end of the war (Winters words not mine) was another example.

    As a former grunt, I had Officers I respected deeply, and ones I just simply disliked, they could have been outstanding human beings around their family/friends outside the military, but all I saw was their conduct in uniform. We all rarely got the "full picture", and based our opinions on the information at hand. Dike seemed a decent guy, and if he "froze" at Foy due to being SHOT, I can understand it totally. People react differently to injury, I always got mad as hell when hurt, pain came later, anger fueled me and adrenaline kept the pain away til well after the fact. Looking at the 30+ year old scar on my wrist from a ricochet as I type this, I can still remember only realizing what had happened after someone else pointed out I was bleeding. Combat is a totally different world, emotions and hormones are running high, and only the best can compartmentalize things and function at a high level. Regardless, those Easy Co. guys were a breed apart, they made history, and for that alone I respect the hell out of them. If any were still alive today I'd happily buy them a round and toast their achievements.

    • @WorldWarTruth

      The series should have definitely shown Dike getting shot. That would have changed peoples perspective somewhat. They should have done a scene where he saved a few soldiers from ambush and got a bronze star. Hindsight is 20/20. But this mini series should have been longer

      It was definitely too one sided when it came to Dike. At least show the guy getting shot to give a little perspective to why he possibly froze during the attack.

    This is making me very angry that they would treat a hero like this , the man deserved better he had already gone through hell and come back. Ashamed thats all I feel very much ashamed that this would be allowed to happen.

    I could barely remember my chain of command back in my 20’s. Officers came and gone working their way up the corporate ladder. First sergeants were there for the long haul- they are the backbone of the army. I can’t remember too many officers’s names- now or back 40 years ago🤣

    I read that the Graham Greene short story and subsequent film "Went The Day Well" was an inspiration for the idea that became Jack Higgins' book. The film was shot in England in 1942 and is worth watching. Sutherland was a fine actor and played some very memorable roles. RIP.

    I don't really think that this counted as breaking any record.. unless they went to the jungle.. hung out for a few years and then did this.. in fact if easy had deployed to the Pacific they would have found out the hard way.

      I don't think there was any comparison to be made at all. The Japanese wore sandals and carried bicycles through the malaria ridden muddy jungle in scorching humidity. This was solely about Colonel Sink's ego and he won no friends from it.

    Still doing the Battle of Britain speech for people it didn't refer to... a bit brazen

      Its merely a channel intro. It doesn't have anything to do with the actual video (now I understand your comment from the last video)

    In a later part of this series, you present a much more balanced perspective of Sobel. Everyone should watch those episodes. You acknowledge that all we have is one side to this story. Sobel did not write a memoir. Malarkey’s story that it the event was planned and coordinated by Winter suggests a possible different interpretation. You also, in a later episode give a different interpretation of the salute the rank story that casts Winter in a more petty light. The problem with the series, though I have been attacked for saying this, is that Ambrose wrote history based fiction and drama. The Winters of the series is set up to be the protagonist, the hero. All heros in drama need an antagonist. Real life is more complicated. The real story of Sobel, like Dike, Blithe, Liebgott were altered to serve the narrative. The problem is that Ambrose and Spielberg are so good at story telling that we want to believe that they are real. We want Winters and condemn Sobel. But it ain’t that simple.

      Yeah I made this video well before I did the 3 part series on Sobel. That's the problem when you go down the rabbit hole and find a lot of new details. It can make your earlier work somewhat out of date so to speak. The next video in the Wnters series is about the courts-martial in England taken from Winter's writings on the matter.
