I don't even want to be a motovlogger, I just want to be able to film my trips with my dad so we can look back on them down the road and this video was so informative and helpful. Thanks for everything you do Ian , keep up the great work.
Finally someone who open-handed shared very valuable information about this subject. It takes hours and hours to figure out all this for yourself and you managed to generously share it with us in only 30 min.
“Finally” bro 😂. Every major motovlogger on the planet makes one of these. Most motovloggers make one of these every two years or so. Please remove thine nose from the @ss of this creator
For me, the tech side isn’t the issue; telling a compelling story is the main stopping point for me. I definitely applaud you for being able to do both at expert level, Ian!
Great video as always. I use a Gopro 10 on my helmet, a 9 on my handle bars for the "hero" shot, a 360 Max, and an Innovv K5. I really only use the audio from the Innovv for the sound of the bike. To sink up the video on all the cameras I honk the horn for the audio spike, all the cameras have no issues picking it up where as I've had some not pick up the hand clap. One note on the Purple panda, the first time I tried it I got horrible audio out of it. The Purple Panda has a TRRS plug and the media mod has a TRS port. My original set up I used a 90 degree TRRS to TRRS adapter. When I revisited the Purple Panda, after a multitude of failed experimentation with other solutions, I realized my mistake and used the TRRS to TRS adapter Purple Panda includes with their mic. Way better audio. I have the mic tucked into the left cheek pad and it does a great job picking up my voice. It's a lot of effort to share my rides with my family back in the U.S. but they do enjoy seeing Japan from a motorcycle.
I agree on the Purple panda, it is the best in-helmet mic I have found. I've got one conencted to a Zoom Z1 audio recorder. I went with Akaso action cams and they only support a proprietary mic, so a dedicated recorder was needed. It is more work, but I prefer a dedicated audio track when editing, it makes the swapping of video in/out from several cams easier, but it does come at a sync up cost initially. Akaso cams can create great video, been a good alternate camera for getting started in motovlogging.
Good points here, Ian, particularly the audio. Poor sound will send viewers away from a good video, while good sound may keep your audience watching a lackluster filming effort. I like the Rode mics as well, for the GoPros as well as video camera work. Nice summary of the process, and you did not omit the time required to actually edit our footage into something presentable. It's a lot of work, and I support your comment earlier... "It's nice to just go out and ride without cameras!"
A great video again from you Ian. The more I watch your videos the more I appreciate your straight forward presentation and interesting content. I don't video blog but I do record my rides and was about to instal a side mount on my sports bike helmet. After watching this video I am going for the chin mount as you recommended. Many thanks. P.S. I ride an Africa Twin DCT and thinks its the best thing since sliced bread!
Thank you Ian for taking the time and effort to bring so much information in so little time. A lot you said surely has come from experience, trial and error and I'm sure it will be helpful to motovloggers. As always excellent content, well organized and presented. Greetings from Sri Lanka!
I don’t think I’ll ever motovlog but I like capturing some of my rides to share with my family and riding buddies. Thanks for sharing how you capture footage and audio!
Important message Ian. I have accumulated GoPro attachments & accessories for 11 yrs now and learnt a lot. For me, a 3M adhesive mount for GoPro has never failed. If mounting surface is prepped properly, they stick well. I'm spoilt for choice between all my GoPro & RAM gadgets. One of my most important accessories is a remote for my GoPro. I am always fully aware of filming & camera status and film much 'smarter' with less boring & excessive footage. Next investment is a 360 camera - GoPro Max or Insta?
I just lost my entire moto recording gear recently (hence with no moto content as of late), oh well life sucks. I have to start from the zero... Your video is very handy for those who want to venture into moto videos! Get well soon Ian.
Santa just got me a GoPro 11. I remember seeing this video a few months ago. Very useful information. Thank you. Last thing I want to do is film boring stuff for no reason. Merry Christmas.
Thanks for taking the time to make this vid, This was very helpful. Especially for the tips at the end about telling a story and keeping it interesting. I'm just starting out and have a lot to learn.
Spot on install Big Rock Moto! I have a different challenge - my GoPro is mounted out in front of my windshield. In addition, I do not want any wires coming from the GoPro back into my helmet (tethered) so, I'm flummoxed. I chose the location of the GoPro first so there is nothing in the way (tall windshield). I have a great stout mount so that part is done. I have a USB charger in the dash to run to the GoPro to record and all-day session. I'm thinking get a GoPro case with the mic adapter space to get that part done right up front. That leaves two cables coming back to inside the windshield - the "new" USB-C to my charge port and the mic cable. I'm thinking a wireless mic so, the receiver is on the handlebars or the like and the transmitter (smaller the better) is in the helmet or on the helmet with a short mic cable inside the helmet. Done. Any advice? would be welcome.
Regarding syncing multiple cameras and even audio from an external audio recorder, if you bring all these files into Final Cut Pro and convert them into a Multicam clip, Final Cut does an excellent job of automatically syncing the multiple files-provided. you captured hand claps or other distinct peak audio sounds! Cheers, and good job on the vido.
I ussually don’t comment on videos but I have to congratulate you for your direct , simple and very profesional way to tackle this very hard topic , please keep it up and stay SAFE!!
As a newbie in this media flatform I Really find this content very substantial and I learned a lot. I trully appreciate. Cool.... New subscriber From 🇵🇭 Philippines Dude.
Super tutorial on motovlogging. I’ve been doing it for about 5 years now and learned most of this the hard way by just trial and error. Getting the audio quality acceptable was my biggest challenge. I use the Purple Panda microphone inside my helmet connected to my chin mounted GoPro Hero 8 with the media mod and it works great. I’m adding the Insta360 camera soon and look forward to learning how to use that to make my vlogs more interesting from a video perspective. I use PowerDirector for my editing software and find it easy to use for multiple cameras. I would be interested in your opinion on that software. You have a great channel and I enjoy all your content. Thanks!
Extremely helpful and informative for me as a newbie -mainly for short clips of our group rides and trips. I prefer short clips and snapshots when we are in curves or scenic areas. Thanks again, I'm learning!
Thanks so much for sharing the craft Ian. You’re really nailing it and your willingness to share information and “how to” is terrific! Keep up the great work. Folks like me will definitely keep watching.
Great video, the new GoPro 12 allows to sync up your cargo or center via Bluetooth just like your phone and you can record all the audio from the mic from SNL or Cardo. Emma would be your conversation yourself or if anybody else within the group seems like a really good option to illuminate external microphones and cables and listen, Nat. Secondly, the Insta360 has the little adapter for audio so you can use the SS6 360 as an as a microphone to just like you’re the media by like that and you don’t need a medium mosasaur little after the clips onto that and it’s invisible and use and capture audio for your 362. Thanks for sharing.
Another really well done video presentation. It might be too boring for some but how you go about organizing your shoot in relation to the final production is a whole other topic that many may not be aware of. (You know, when to get B-roll or whatever…) I believe that’s what separates the pros in the types of presentations you do. Along those lines, one of the challenges I’ve found with the Insta360 and editing is parsing out clips from a really large file. At times I’ve had to leave the camera running for 5-10 minutes at a time just to snag maybe three three-second clips…planning your shots helps unless you’re in unpredictable filming situations like what I tend to shoot. That’s when the Insta360 editing app gets to be a pain. Edit: Ha! Well I guess you did touch on that…teach me not to watch the last two minutes of your piece before I comment! 😎
This review was excellent, thank you so very much. I've been so unsatisfied with the results of my Akasa 4K and RickRak custom fairing mount made for my Harley Ultra Ltd's fairing. I tried another model cameral and still get "warbly" results. I'm not sure a different camera will fix it, as I have already used two different models. I had the gyro turned on too. Possibly a different brand of camera but more likely the mount is the culprit. You've given me some great ideas to try and thank you very much!
Great video! It's funny, every time I start researching something, you do a video about it answering a lot of my questions. I appreciate that effort you put into these videos. Thanks bro!
Good video Ian, lots of usefull logical topics. I ordered one of the Purple Panda mics.. you talked me into it. haha. One thing i was hoping you would touch on is battery management in the GoPro's. I think i have it sorted very well but I am always curious what other people do.
Outstanding. Really great, solid tried and true advice. This will take my experience to a higher level. Thank you. The best piece of advice was: Perfection is the enemy of getting something done.
good stuff, thanks for taking the time to put this together. Dig the OG Everide ADV shirt too! Been a Sub there since the early days. Picked up my T7 this last Saturday so going to have to re-watch all your T7 content.
Thanks for the video. Your videos are so informative and authentic. I likethe way your passion for motorcycling comes across in the detail, rather than forced, inauthentic enthusiasm. 😃👋👍
Great video! Thanks Ian (Loved the bloopers at the end - there's not always a lot of humour in your videos but that made me laugh!) I'm coincidentally looking to buy a camera setup for the bike so this video of yours is timed perfectly! Cheers from Johannesburg, South Africa
Hi Ian, some great tips. I'm still debating on getting the 360 camera to add to my gear. It's a $700 camera so I want to be sure it's not going to end up on the shelf, but I think I will use it if I can make the investment. (lucky you got one free!) I'm more interested in it's super wide angle reverse view ability than the funky 360 shots. Even Itchy boots stopped bothering with all that after only a few videos, but today uses it for rear facing views and to record people she talks to by the bike. She started using this technique shortly after spending time with Charly Sinewan who does it extensively. I think it's a good perspective and could be well utilized. As for the resolution, I've always struggled with this one. My videos have been recorded using 1080p at 60 fps thus far. My reason is because when I record at 30 everything always seems to come out choppy and blurry while riding. I get a much smoother and clearer video at 60. It makes a big difference on things like trees passing by while riding, it's a lot of detail to process at only 30 fps so they tend to blur out while riding down a forest road. (as an example) I've also heard/read that most people's video monitors don't even support 4k viewing, so when looking at a 4k video on a monitor that only supports 1080p is only going to give you 1080p anyway. When you gave a sample in this video comparing 1080 to what you recorded in, as a viewer online, I really didn't see any difference. If anything the 1080p pic looked sharper because it was downsized. Third, my internet is not great in my area for uploading, and may not be for others too. With DSL, my only option, I get 1 mb/s max when uploading a video, which means a 15 minute video in 1080@60 takes up to 2 days to upload, and that is if nothing goes wrong during that time and I have to start over. If I start doing 4k video it's going to take me a week to upload a single episode. I do however, understand that there are advantages because of the bitrate stuff that youtube does once you are uploaded. I've noticed when viewing a big vlogger's video in the same rez as my videos, the big vlogger's videos play clear, smooth and in higher rez than my vids do, even though they are both set for the same resolution. I'm curious if UA-cam also supports a higher throttle rate for accounts that have much higher viewing traffic. In layman's terms, your video will playback clearer to viewers if you upload higher rez, even if their monitor doesn't support it. I think I'm going to try half way and do some 2k video, but at only 30 fps and see how that goes as far as video quality, size and upload speed. Keep up the great work Ian, we always appreciate your input to the world of motovlogging! youtube.com/@baldandbiking
Awesome episode! Excellent explanation of things I’ve been wondering about. This will surely help me and others who want to film their adventures & stories.
Great video! I would like to see shorter episodes and more in depth with each one like cameras. One video is good for entertaining but hard for new vlogger to use as a reference 😁
My Solution for Deadcat vs face, Helmet Sock, you can get really good ones that also help keep you warm/cool depending on climate & the type you buy, also helps keep your helmet padding clean.
A really helpfull video, after a lot of research i totally agree with what you say. A small tip about youtube codecs and the resolution is that you can record in 1080 edit in same resolution and export in higher one, youtube will use the high-end codecs. And there will be no problem in the video. I do it in my videos. thanx a lot for sharing your knowledge
hi, nice tips. i have the same setup for my reviews, but i dont use mounts for One X2. i use my body to secure it and makes everything mutch faster to record :) Ride Safe
Thanks for the info. I want to get started with a gopro and this helps. I'm wondering about how to turn on and off the filming while riding?? I don't think I want to merely have it running all the time and I don't want to fiddle with reaching for the on/off button while riding. Can you explain how this happens on the fly? As I'm riding I want to be selective with what I'm filming. Thanks.
You read my mind. I was just thinking that I would like to know more about the video process. I don't want to be a pro motovlogger, but I do want to capture some personal memories for myself and my friends. Thanks.
This is the 3rd time I’m watching this. My sound has been quite good but now that I’ve switched from my GSA to the Scrambler 1200, the lack of the windscreen has introduced a wind whistle which I think is from the peak of my XD4. I just put some gorilla tape over the deadcat to try on my next ride. Oh I tried the Hyperview on my GP11, I think the Superview is still the best view as the detail closer in is better without the Hyperviews distortion.
I really enjoy your content! Slightly off topic but I am more interested in about 80% still shots and 20% video. Do you have any recommendations for equipment, gopro w/screen shots, adv type digital camera, etc?? Thanks and keep the content coming
Very useful video. I will certainly take on board some of the tips as someone who makes lots of mistakes when Moto-vlogging. Can I just say one thing though; which is that bringing down the highlights and bringing up the shadows does NOT increase your dynamic range. IF you are lucky and don't have any clipping, you might be able to recover some detail in either the shadow, OR the highlights. BUT if you do it too much, footage will look grey and muddy.

Great stuff, Ian. This is the kind of useful info presented in a practical format that is otherwise surprisingly hard to come by. Thank you.
I think this is the best overview of how to moto vlog I have seen. A real beginning to end tutorial. Awesome video!
Glad it helped!

No problem 👍
4K @30fps.
Thank you;)
People have this false idea that 60fps gives them a higher quality.
60fps is for soap operas or,… slomo 😊

Keep up the great work Ian, we always appreciate your input to the world of motovlogging!

Always good content.
Thanks Big Rock been waiting for this post!
Awesome episode! Excellent explanation of things I’ve been wondering about. This will surely help me and others who want to film their adventures & stories.
Great video buddy and awesome tips and instruction!
Great video! I would like to see shorter episodes and more in depth with each one like cameras. One video is good for entertaining but hard for new vlogger to use as a reference 😁
Great tips for us hobbyist vloggers.
Drone footage is good. Itchy Boots does a great job with her DJI.
Another brilliant video, Ian. Thank you very much.
Good work Ian! Keep it up.
That was thorough and very helpful thanks!
My Solution for Deadcat vs face, Helmet Sock, you can get really good ones that also help keep you warm/cool depending on climate & the type you buy, also helps keep your helmet padding clean.
Man this was really useful! I just got started dirt biking and I am planning to start recording
Thank you Ian….. I’ve learned a lot today. Respect for you! 😊
One of best explanatory video on this topic. Thank you very much 🙏
Good stuff - should help a lot of people.
Sugru works brilliant;y for mounting your camera.
Whats the update re the problems with your Norden, have they been remedied yet. Looking fwd to an update
coming soon
Thank you for sharing you cut great videos 😊
hi, nice tips. i have the same setup for my reviews, but i dont use mounts for One X2. i use my body to secure it and makes everything mutch faster to record :) Ride Safe
Good info and tips. Just starting out on the vlog scene. So, very useful. Thank you.
Glad it was helpful!
High value advice. Thanks for your generousity in sharing this info.
My pleasure!
exactly the kind of video I was looking for.
Thank you so much. Incredibly helpful info for me right now.
You're a gem. Thanks again.
Thanks.
You got it!
Thanks so much, That was really useful & informative. Much appreciated
Another great and informative video. The 360 camera seems a better space/weight saving option compared with an expensive drone.
I really enjoy the cool, down to earth approach in all your videos and ofc the valuable info. ;)
Glad to hear it!
Thanks Ian,
Can you not use the bluetooth connection and microphone from lets say your Cardo com device ?
You are the man. Great tips. A real masterclass. Thanks 😀👍
Great content! Thanks a lot! Helped me with my motovlog!
Great video, thanks for sharing this great information!
I really enjoy your content! Slightly off topic but I am more interested in about 80% still shots and 20% video. Do you have any recommendations for equipment, gopro w/screen shots, adv type digital camera, etc??
Thanks and keep the content coming
Really enjoyed that one, great info gona use this advises. Thanks
Glad you enjoyed it
Great info. Thanks, I'm enjoying your channel.
Great video and explanation! Thank you.
Just curious when you ride you don't use a Sena or Cardo when riding? You just run your Go pro setup. Great info as well!
Hope you feel better very soon.
