i made three, a small starter one near the shallows, one in a fissure near i think the reef, and one near the tree in the river
the temporary nature really spoke to me, i actually went to all my bases and vehicles when it was time to leave and shut their power down and removed all their cores and stuff, leaving them dormant like the others who didnt survive, for maybe someone to find and wonder what happened in the future
it was nice, completely pointless, but nice

I got a base in the 2nd to top left creep vine forest (relative to big blood kelp area and the safe shallows, safe shallows being the bottom)
It has a moon pool, 2 large rooms (stacked) first one on the bottom has an alien containment in the middle and a bunch of storage. on the short sides there is observatories with chairs.
second floor has a garden with 8 grow beds, half having lantern fruit, and the other half having bulbo trees. it also has windows. I have lights surrounding my base illuminating the surroundings. the moon pool is connected to the first floor sideways, with the connection between the 2 floors on the opposite side of the moon pool. the connection consists of 2 t pieces facing each other on the 2 middle connections, with 2 glass L pieces connecting them on the 2 loose ends as well, with a command chair in the center of the L's. same on the second floor. vertical connectors connect the 2 extensions with ladders too. and there are 2 hatches on the sides of the t's on the bottom floor. that's it, that is my base

My bases in the Sparse Reef and Blood Trench were both intended strictly for refuelling. The former started as a bioreactor-based battery charger, and never got a moonpool. But the latter was quickly upgraded to nuclear.

I always based out in the edges of the safe shallows. Sunlight, safe, comfortable. While pretty far from everything, sunlight was the biggest deciding factor for where i based. The second would be Geothermal energy. Im not one for base design really, going for compact. A moon-pool, the giant rectangle living space i forget the name of, observatory, and maybe a platform for growing aquatics outside. All and all, its not exactly flashy, but i noticed i really like windows, with the leafy walls. added much needed color and texture to the titanium white and Altera blue walls.
It was spacious, and cozy at the same time. Sci-Fi Cabin vibes, if you will. Water, Crops, Bedding, and an aquarium for pets and company (also food).
Edit: Im not proud to admit 2:07 startled me pretty badly

I love Subnautica for many reasons and the bases are one of them.
And yes, you are meant to leave and that's most likely for the best. However, there's always a thought in the back of my head saying "Why leave? You have a base, so you have a home. Kharaa is on its way to being cured. Sure, you'll be disconnected from other people, but is that really worth going back and receiving millions (or whatever amount the pda tells you) in debt and, most likely, prison because of it?"
    (SPOILERS FROM THIS POINT ON)
Plus, the unique situation with the Sea Emperor and its young is fascinating. Sure, all you do is create the agent to allow the eggs to hatch, but that's enough for me to almost form a small, almost fatherly, bond to them. And that is enough to make me hesitant to leave it behind.

I always build my bases in the red grass plains between the first creepvine forest and the crashed seamoth bay. The gorgeous open area and not too deep dark waters and the soothing ambience of the reefbacks always make me feel so calm and at home. The only other structure I've ever build was a tiny refuelling station at the northern blood kelp entrance to the lost river as well turning my cyclops into a mini home for long scavenging trips

My base was close to the west of the safe shallows, on the border with the grassy plains and the kelp forest. Also with a geyser nearby for geothermal power. Just big enough for a moonpool, water filtration and lots of storage.
Since I mostly played before BZ, there was no big rectangle room.
I remember creating the Cyclops. It was amazing. Huge sub, lots of space for storage, food, anything you could want. That became my home, as energy draining as it was.

On my most recent playthrough, I treated the game as if Lifepod 5 ceases to exist when the Aurora explosion happens. It doesn't really vanish of course, it's out there floating around. But for gameplay purposes, I never once went back to it. So I built my first base a moderate distance from the Aurora, at 96 meters down in the Kelp Forest. This was also deliberate, because I wanted to treat the gameplay as though the Warpers might be trying to FIND me. So each base and mini-base I built, I tucked away in a place they don't visit (Jellyshroom cave), or in nooks where there would be excellent local camoflage. Eventually you stop being scared of the Warpers, like after you kill your first Ghost Leviathan Juvenile, and then I started to build bases more openly as I took the paths into the Lost River. But it made it a very memorable game (also, with permadeath on).

I’ve built many amazing bases through my numerous playthroughs of Subnautica. I remember all of them fondly and before leaving the planet I always take screenshots. My favorite one is my surface base from my hardcore playthrough after they added the large rooms, I had an alien containment in the middle with lab counters and scientific equipment scavenged from the Aurora and Degasi lab. In a way they both lived on through my base. Break areas with tables, coffee and and vending machines. I grew potted plants from the islands and used them decoratively all of the walls and floors. Many many rooms, even a guest room, though no one ever stayed in it.

I was late at the game, having only recently finished it for the first time. I had two main bases (the first one abandonned after I builded the second, closer to the Island and the dept leading to the Lost River), but also an array of small outposts, really minimalistic, put in strategic spots like near the access to the jellyshroom caves or the alien giant gun. Finally, in the late game, I've built a medium size base in the Lost River, just out of reach of the local Ghost Leviathan but near the lava region, and especially, all the resources.
My urge to built giants cities was needed to be kept in check XD

Mine base of operation was a water treatment facility what's provided me with necessary amounts for long range reconnaissance operation in actual base of operation located inside cyclop what was fitted with all the necessary supplies to last as long as possible without visiting that facility for refill. The freedom that offered was invaluable and offered for most intimate connection to all places on the 4546B and with it's local fauna, making me feel most comfortable even while sleeping in Dunes for weeks with roaring reapers swimming above my head as i watched them in fascination while having a breakfast in a cockpit before going out and swimming with them in the dim sunlight that shine through sea of sand particles.

I'm in the camp of "bases in an exploration game are worthless". I had two bases, but I only used them for food, batteries and when I got tired of hunting for rocks - radar. I don't consider either base a home. Safe Shallows felt like home. Cyclops felt like home. The bases were waystations at best. Even in this video, the basic premise is that "bases are good, because you don't have to suffer them for long".

Well, that was a good video. But i do think subnautica building isnt the best one. You see, theres this game called Ark survival ascended, which meets practically all lf the points made in the video. And on top of that the game makes you want to protect your base, there are many reasons why. Like wanting to protect your dinos, resources or just because you spent much time on building it and were proud of it. That helps your base feel much more like your home. Your base is progressing with you, kind of like in subnautica, you go from stone to metal tools, and your base, if you wish, can too! You tame a metal harvesting dino, build an industrial forge inside your base to smelt all of the metal faster. Also theres like a lot of material tupes for buildings which can lead to some very nice looking buildings.
