    You saved me a lifetime of embarrassment. My gas was on E and I pulled over to the closest gas station to fill up my tank, only for me to find out that my gas tank door wasn't opening. I felt like the world was against me. There are not a lot of videos like this out there so when yours came up as a suggestion, I was so thankful. You don't know how much money you just saved me today.

      Me yesterday at the pump here in San Francisco, home of the patient and non suspicious. Difference is that I found the wrong video, sitting there looking stupid, but clearly in need of help. Instead, the attendant looked as if he was ready to call the police, and no one getting gas had the time of day. I then looked up, "how many miles till refill on empty light", went home and hoped to find this video. Off I go to get a rubber ducky and some gas. I'll order this springy thing today. Thank you!

    Thank you so much for posting this! I own a 2011 rav4 and was very frustrated when I went to get gas earlier and I couldn't open the fuel door. I didn't have the "special tool" but a rolled up sock allowed me to open the fuel door. The fuel door spring actually fell out when I went to open the door and all I needed to do was pop the spring back in place and now everything is working as it should. Thank you thank you thank you!!!

    You are a legend. Thank you for the insight. I was panicking that everything was broken and it would cost me heaps to get fixed but I watched your video thanks to google search. I tried your trick to see if it was a broken hinge causing the issue and it was actually the fuel cap cord caught on the fuel flap that was causing the non opening but your technique to keep the release open was super helpful! So from panic to no panic truly grateful 😃

    You gave me exactly the guidance I needed, though I don't have a rubber ducky. :-) What I found was not that the spring had given up the ghost on my 2012 Camry, but that weeks of rain had so stiffened the hinge on the door that it wouldn't open. Propping the lever up I was able to open the door and then applied some graphite to the hinges. I worked the door a few dozen times and gave it another try... Works just fine. I might have gotten there on my own but UA-cam makes it so easy to learn from others experience that I had to give that a try before launching out on my own. Thanks much. I'll check your UA-cam thread and see whether subscribing makes sense for me. But regardless... thank you. You definitely earned a thumbs up!

    On a 2005 4Runner, I found it was easier to fit to the slot behind the door hinge rod first, second then snap on the hinge rod, third and last push the plastic tab toward the hinge to have that last bit secured in the outer slot. I assume that is why the flex tab is designed to be on the outer portion of the spring part, to allow a slight bit of flex to get the final snap in.

    Tip 1. If you have no helper and no duck, you may be able to loop the seat belt to hold the door release lever.
    (happened to me at a gas station)
    Tip 2. My spring clip did not break but lost its push back (must be a better word for this). I cut piece from a foam ear plug
    and inserted it between the leaves of the spring clip and fuel door has worked fine ever since.

    • @mattevans1643
      @mattevans1643 5 років тому

      90% of the work is something you can do. I may be more mechanically inclined than other people, but i can do anything a mechanic can do. A washer bottle that took me 45 seconds to get off, cause it's only 3 bolts. Ended up costing me $100 to get put back on, when it was a $40 bottle. Absolutely insane. My mom took it to her mechanic because i was in Afghanistan, and for "safety" reasons it has to be there to pass inspection. I've never once taken my car to a mechanic for that exact reason. They charge by the hour, so 1second of work is still an hours worth of work, unless they're really cool.

    Quick question...I've searched all over online and can't seem to get a straight answer...Right around the 1:33 point in your video your pointing something out and what I noticed was that the hinge is fastened to your vehicle with two rivets. I have the same type of setup in my daughter's 03 Vibe....However, our hinge broke and the fuel door cover is missing....I ordered another fuel door cover off of car-parts.com and it came with an attached (not broken) hinge....I would really love to get a fuel door cover back on her car.....What do you recommend is the best way to get those two rivet looking fasteners off the vehicle so I can replace my daughter's fuel cover? Again they look identical to your fasteners....And afterward, if the two rivets must be destroyed or whatever, what would you recommend I use to re-fasten the fuel door hinge cover replacement? Any help you could provide would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

      I don't know how different your fuel door is than this one. But, I imagine that you may have two options. The first would be preferable if possible where you tap out the hinge pin much like an interior door of a house. You'd need a very small punch or nail of the right diameter. If that is not possible, I think your only other option is to drill out the rivets. Then, install new rivets with an appropriate pop rivet gun or see if you can get behind the fender panel to install small bolts. You'd likely need to disassemble the filler neck to gain access for that. Good luck! Sounds like a challenge.

      @@WorseThanChiggers Thanks for the reply...I did drill out the rivets and replaced them with small screws and nuts....Seems to be hanging in there at the moment...Thanks again.

    I have a 2005 toyota camry. My service engine light now remains on. Everytime I pull the release lever to open the fuel door the gas cap is loose. I turn it until it clicks several times and close the fuel door but when I immediately pull the release lever again and check the cap it be loose. Do you know if when the release lever is pulled to open the fuel door does that automatically loosen the cap for convenience or could my gas cap be malfunctioning?

      You may have a faulty gas cap which can turn on the check engine light. Get a new genuine Toyota gas cap from the parts desk at your dealership. They're cheap.

    Any idea if this is similar to the spring installation on a Hyundai? The part looks similar in the diagrams.

      Sorry. I don't have experience with this procedure on a Hyundai. You should certainly be able to easily look up the similar part for your particular vehicle.
