First time in my 67 years I've heard agate pronounced with a long A in the second syllable. Is that how the locals pronounce it? In the jewelry and stone cutting business for jewelry it's pronounced with both A's short. But then is it basil or basil or tomato or tomato? 🤗
Haha, love that you knew the boat! We only had a short time to fly the drone, per the town rules, so we were lucky the boat was going out to sea to capture a sweet shot.
Newport is more of a smaller port town, with long stretches of beaches. Astoria is more of a city with rich history. It's hard to choose which one is better because they are both pretty different. We do also have an Astoria top 10 video on our channel, if you haven't checked that one out yet. It might help you choose what things to do that better resonate with you and your travel goals!
As someone who's lived here 10 years, you pronounced Yaquina correctly. It is Ya-qwinna, not Ya-keena. No one here says Ya-keena. But yes, you did mess up agate 😉
I just moved to Newport, from Erie County PA, on Oct. 12 '23. Yaquina is pronounced yuh-kee-nuh. Crabbing... Only the males can be kept. Agate... The second a is long. The e at the end is pronounced similarly to the pronunciation of agave, more like... eh. I've been to the aquarium, but one area was closed for construction. Just 'sounding out' spellings into words isn't always the correct pronunciation, however... there are pronunciations that make absolutely no sense.
We kind of assumed it was pronounced Ya Keen ah, but we were in the visitors center there and in an informational video was pronouncing it the way you heard us say in the video. But it’s become funny that like %50 of our UA-cam comments are people correcting our pronunciation. We’re trying!
Unfortunately... While informational videos are useful, helpful, they're also computer generated - way too often. Computer programs are not always created as well as they should be. If you want something pronounced correctly then you have to edit the wording to spell certain words differently. This editing isn't even done when there is excessive content or someone is just too lazy to do it or just doesn't care.

Oops! I appears your right. We try to get pronunciation right on everything, but this one slipped through the cracks🤭

lol my hometown 🙂
Can you compare Newport to Astoria? I am curious if one is better to visit over the other, if I can only go to one. Thanks!!!

Y'all did my hometown right! I visit there about once every other month from Portland. Growing up in Newport was a trip.
Thanks! Glad we did it justice. Definitely one of our favorite places on the coast.
