One of the most important rhythms in pop and funk music is actually a rhythm called the "Clave" - meaning "key."
Think of the Clave as a "key" that unlocks a certain type of rhythmic behavior.
    In this lesson we'll cover the 2 basic versions - a "3-2" and a "2-3" clave.
Is this easy or hard for you? Leave a comment to let me know!
    1:21 What is the Clave?
    1:40 3-2 Clave
    2:14 Adding the backbeat on 2 & 4
2:54Some songs that use the "hidden" Clave
3:22 Playing it on the bass strings
    3:44 2-3 Clave
4:42 Putting the "3" rhythmic grouping on the guitar
5:40 Thumbpick? Nails? What you should use.
6:11 Use "gravity" rather than strength in your right hand
6:34 All downs or alternate down & up?
7:44 Where to add the thumb click / slap
9:23 Can this be done on nylon strings?
10:05 How to play this with the right hand fingers
11:12 How to play thumb and fingers together for this groove
I hope you enjoy this lesson!
    Big Hug,
    Adam

I mostly play nylon string. To get that click, I use my right hand middle three fingertips, hold them perpendicular right over upper fretboard, and just snap them straight down hitting the strings and fretboard. Doesn't matter which strings they hit or miss. I get a nice click. To my ears it's just as effective and easy to do.. My right hand nails are fairly short, just enough to add some edge to the plucked string sound yet not enough to require much nail maintenance. They probably contribute some to the click sound too. My stroke is 95% flesh and 5% nail .

oom bop bop. Oom is a pickup note on a rest. Isn't this the entire New Orleans sound? Not to mention Bo Diddley? Hill country fife & drum too.

Yes, the Claver rhythm with a three and then the two is absolutely the Bo Diddley groove also!

Great lesson Adam! Ever since I started diving into your teachings about groove (which ultimately led me to understanding the rhythmic nature of jazz better) it's helped me bring all the other aspects of playing together, like tone, touch and technique.
I'm wondering if you will ever create your own rhythm course beyond what you've already done on SWA like what Mike Longo did? I think that would really change the way a lot of fingerstyle guitar players, play!

I browsed through the lessons on your channel. Im really happy to have found you! I just turned 65! I live in isolation. But i played in a blues band for years. What i want to play, is post rock / ambient guitar.
Recently i discovered a band named Isis. Really its post metal. But its beautiful music. (Too bad they sing though) your channel reminds me a lot of their compositions. You might enjoy them , or perhaps you know them. It doesnt matter. I found a wealth of material on your channel that i want to learn! Youre an incredible resource. Im on it! I was confused because I’m used to a clave running 2 bars from 1 to 4 over the same timespan as 1 of your bars. So beats on 1 2and, 4, and the on 2, 3. the clicks would the be on the 3s in both bars. Not sure why you did it this way but suppose it works.

  • @SemvanBlerkGuitar
    @SemvanBlerkGuitar 3 роки тому

Great lesson. About doing it on nylon strings: I almost only play nylon strings, and find that the lower tension of nylon strings vs steel strings compensate a lot for the downsides you talk about. And I like the sound of the clicks better. But that's personal taste I guess.
Plus the risk of having one click popping out way too loud (happens to me especially with a thumb pick on steel strings playing amplified) and making the sound engineer wanna kill you for blowing their ears way smaller... So Adam please switch to nylon strings cos it'll raise your changes of living longer 😜
