I hope you enjoy this lesson. It addresses right hand technique, groove, percussion and slaps.
You'll also learn about 12/8 time. That's the basis of shuffles and swing actually :-)
It's another great technique to your "groove toolbox." In fact, this is the basis of how I have been playing the last few years - it puts groove FIRST, and the notes second (dunno if that makes sense...)
I use this right hand strum / slap technique in songs like
    ► Isn't She Lovely
    ► Can't Buy Me Love
► Fly Me To The Moon
    ► Misty
    And MANY more...

You can also do a midway between a slap and a note by slapping through the string and resting your thumb on the one below.

Brilliant! Really enjoyed this lesson. I've heard a few arrangements with this rhythm and couldn't figure it out. Great explanation, Adam. Well done and thanks! Keep up the great work. Cheers!

Cheers Adam, useful lesson, so thanks for that, my muting needs some work! Your right hand strumming is quicker than either my eye or youtubes video quality, so slowed down was/would be necessary for this kind of lesson for me. Been trying to incorporate 16th note funky bass lines with chord stabs/strumming for a while now, kind of Bernard Edwards and Nile Rodgers (or Joe Dart and Cory Wong) at the same time. I feel I might not ever manage it, but that's guitar playing all over really, every day a challenge. Anyway, bet Joe Pass could have done it!. Best wishes. :)

Hey thanks for the comment - and did you know right here on UA-cam you can slow down vids? Like I said doing this slow and grooving is very hard for me, just like riding a bike slowly is more difficult. 😀

Love it, Adam! I never heard that tune in 12/8 before. Makes a lot more sense now.
Also, I just have to say, calling that chord Ab7 makes me physically uncomfortable!

D'oh!!! G#7 would have been more "righter" sorry about that! 4/4 swing is in fact 12/8 much of the time, but it's a matter of preference...12/8 suggests that you can really hear the 8th note triplets articulated. 4/4 swing 8th notes (jazz, Count Basie etc) are kind of like the 1st and 3rd of the 12/8 triplets - and actually the 3rd is a tad louder...once 4/4 gets faster in jazz, it's less likely to be heard like 12/8. Keep rockin!

Great content - detailed and unique. Good use of camera angles and tabs.
If you are looking for feedback - one thing that seems to work on UA-cam is doing occasional clickbaity list videos, eg. '5 funky fingerstyle songs' or 'My 3 Favourite Guitarists'. Paul Davids does this well. I also personally like it when the video starts straight away with a demo (cf. Marty Music) with no verbal intro. And maybe do a couple of short (

Fantastic video as always from my favourite acoustic player, thanks very much! I was wondering how you were getting that light snare/brush sound. One question (for anyone): I can't figure out the angle on the index finger brushing, starting at 8:20. The upstroke is fine as it's happening on the pad of the finger, but my downstroke (even the unaccented ones) sound way too bright and tinny when the nail hits the string. Are the downstrokes using the pad as well?

    • @adamrafferty
      @adamrafferty  5 років тому +1

Downstrokes are with the back of the nail. I suggest just groove and feel your way, and listen, listen, listen. As well, the backs of each finger sound different. For me, the back of the index is more metallic than the middle finger. Just groove and allow YOUR way to come together! :-)
