  • In this video, I talk about my time shooting with FujiFilm Superia 400 as well as their new film stock, FujiFilm 400, which I’ve heard is a rebranded film from Kodak. Join me as I talk about the film while also displaying countless images I’ve taken with the film stocks.

I'm just sad we're losing the beautiful greens that came with Superia. Had I known it was killed off I wouldn't have loaded my second to last roll.

If I wanted yellow and red toned film, I would buy Kodak. It’s a damn shame the distinctive Fuji green stocks are all dead and buried now.

What amazes me is Fuji. The Japanese culture knows that the film market is growing and they had the means to keep it going and be what Ilford is to back and white as they are to color film.

I got scammed big time. I ordered Superia X-tra 400 online, 2 rolls for 40 euros. They even showed the box on the website. Instead i got the fujifilm 400😅😅 i contacted them and they claimed it's the same as superia. They don't even refund me.

The new Fujifilm 400 is definitely not UltraMax in color rendition, though it has similar red sensitivity to Kodak. To my eye, it looks less warm toned, than Gold or UltraMax is.

I took a roll of fuji 400 and cinestill 800t to a foo fighers concert (front of the pit) last year in a small town called big sky in south Montana. Keep in mind I shot this on a canon AE-1 with a 50mm f1.2 prime lens but I pushed it to 1600 iso (and maybe even 3200 iso as I was new to film at the time). The fuji 400 blew me away at how resiliant it was and I didnt even understand how it worked at all but the fuji roll took a lot of the best photos I had shot on that night. The place where 800t shined was shots with red in them. Incredible film for the orice its going for in my opinion

Superia 400 was classic Fuji, cool blues, greens pop and so do reds. White balance was clear on this, whites came out white. Kodak always produced films with a yellow (warm) base and that blends in to all the colours, creating a warm tone. It depends which look you want.

Where I live in NJ, the only Fuji ISO 400 film is the newer version. The same applies to the current Fuji 200. And the Walmarts around here don't seem to carry any film at all anymore.

I like superia better. It is more saturated and I like saturated film. Japan makes Fuji superia 100 but only available there. Some film stores are buying it from Japan and shipping it here. Reformed film lab carries it but it sold out already. $20 a roll.

  • @Frisenette

Who said Superia is out of production? It isn’t shipped to the US. Still sold in Japan and to a degree in EU though.

I was watching this because I developed my first roll of Fuji 400 today and then I started recognizing some of your locations.. then bam! The climbing gym :D Greetings from an OKC based climber and film photographer. Thanks for the video!

  • @LaskyLabs

Fujicolor 200 took a lot longer to be replaced with Fujigold.

I didn't realize walmart sold it for so cheap, just bought a couple boxes. Thanks dude!

  • @mbrauwolf

Thanks for your video. I'm pretty new to film and this is helpful... In other news, my name is also Michael Bennett, but Bennett is my middle name. Cool!

Fuji finally released a data sheet for the new Fujifilm 400 and it’s definitely not the same as Ultramax today. It’s definitely made by Kodak though and has similar red sensitivity to Kodak.

I loaded this on my konica A4 and got the scans a while ago. Idk but all of my shots without flash taken outdoors with sunny weather and taken indoors w/o flash were dim af. It was so dark and grainy so I can’t post process it to save the shots. The ones taken with flash were fine. I thought it was an isolated case and maybe I was the problem or my cam but someone from my photography group had the same experience. Using p&s, flashed photos were ok, photos w/o flash were all dark. Idk what’s the problem with the films distributed to our country. This was the first time I encountered this problem.

Watching this as I’m at wal mart. I bought it. This is my first time buying film so far and planning to experiment others :)

  • @sneakingelephant

When I started shooting film everyone online was telling me to use gold or ultramax as my starting film but where I live my Walmart never had gold in stock and didn’t carry ultramax. As a result I grabbed superia and absolutely loved it. The way it handles shadows and colors when overexposed a bit is so wonderful. Whenever I would see 3packs available during my Walmart grocery runs I’d grab a box for my freezer because I couldn’t afford any of the professional film stocks at the time. I’m glad now in hindsight that I did because now that it’s gone I still have rolls of it to shoot through.

Weird, I don’t see any news on FujiFilm Canada of Superia being discontinued. They still show Superia X-tra 400 and 200 listed and no mention of a FujiFilm 400. Superia is in stores everywhere around here. I have not seen this FujiFilm 400 yet. I hope they haven’t discontinued it Superia X-tra 400 is one of my favourites and cheap.
