Adapting a full frame VINTAGE lens on my medium format camera!
Переглядів 2,1 тис.14 днів тому
In this video I show you how good off a job a full frame lens that costs less than $30-$40 dollars can do at covering a GFX sensor. The lens is the Pentax SMC 50mm f/2. Now, technically speaking, it's not the best lens, but for the money, you can't go wrong. It has all of the vintage characteristics you might want and very acceptable sharpness. - My Instagram: michaelbennettyt My...

    Good beginner film stock. I love the way it looks with flash. I've pushed this stock pretty hard in tons of different situations from sub-freezing Indiana blizzards to 110 degree California desert and it can take a beating. Overexposure by a stop or two on this stock is pretty good like you said, but most stocks are that way. After about 2 stops negatives turn white, then after purple. I overexposed a roll once in bright daylight while using flash on a 60th of a second (that's what the sync on the camera I was using at the time) and it produced very different shifts, mostly purple but some green. One of the favorite shots I ever took was on that roll

    Remjet isn't for static I believe, but rather it's carbon that protects the film when spooled in motion picture cameras.

    • @michaelbennettphoto
      @michaelbennettphoto 6 днів тому

      I’ve read it’s to pretext the film from static electricity charges that build up while the film is moving through the cameras and reels as high speeds.

    It’s too bad about the current prices of film being that so many young photographers are really getting into the magic of film. So many great emulsions have been discontinued, but I’m hoping the companies making film will be coming out with new, cheaper film stocks to help drive this analog resurgence. During the years of my most prolific use of film, a roll only cost about $2 and $3 more for lab processing. The best thing about film is what you create with it using whatever film is around.

    • @michaelbennettphoto
      @michaelbennettphoto 8 днів тому

    • @michaelbennettphoto
      @michaelbennettphoto 12 днів тому

      I don’t use a lens hood, but I’ve found out the lens I have is the issue. The lens will flare even if there isn’t direct light hitting it. I think it has something to do with the coatings inside of my particular lens. Others have commented and said they have experience using the same lens and there’s performed well.

    I’d recommend the 50 1.7. Image circle is similar to the f2, and a bit glowy wide open, but even at f2 it gets very sharp. By the way, I adapt mamiya 645 glass on the 100s and I swear that out resolves the sensor! Especially if you get a focal reducer such as the Kipon. More pricy though but cheaper than GF glass.

    • @michaelbennettphoto

      I’ll have to check out the 1.7 if I can! I’ve adapted some Mamiya 645 glass before and mannnn the results are amazing. I used the 45mm & 80mm. I never tried them out with a focal reducer but the thought of that set up sounds really cool.

    Woah, the algorithm did me wonders here. I adapted this lens from a pentax film camera to sony apsc as my first semi-fast prime option. The equivalent focal length I got was a joy for concert photography. While the lens isn't considered super fast wide open, I got some beautiful bokeh that holds its own against any of the more expensive lenses I've since picked up. It's very cool to know it's image circle can cover medium format, especially considering a copy is sitting at 25 AUD (17 USD) on my local marketplace. This lens is truly an undervalued gem!

My only other zoom lens is the 70-300mm on x-mount, and the zoom is much less smooth. My only hang up with this lens, and it’s small, is that it gets soft when you focus very close. I took a roll of fuji 400 and cinestill 800t to a foo fighers concert (front of the pit) last year in a small town called big sky in south Montana. Keep in mind I shot this on a canon AE-1 with a 50mm f1.2 prime lens but I pushed it to 1600 iso (and maybe even 3200 iso as I was new to film at the time). The fuji 400 blew me away at how resiliant it was and I didnt even understand how it worked at all but the fuji roll took a lot of the best photos I had shot on that night. The place where 800t shined was shots with red in them. Incredible film for the orice its going for in my opinion

    Nice shots! Love the colors. The 35-70 is amazing! It’s so sharp and small and affordable (for a GFX lens). It makes so much more sense to me than the 32-64 (is that right?). That one gives you a tiny bit wider fov at the wide end and constant f4, but is more expensive and heavier. You REALLY have to know you need those features for it to make more sense than the 35-70.

    Overexposing transparency film is so counterintuitive. When I used to shoot a lot of slide film like Kodachrome, I almost always exposed it for the highlights. So good to know! Most of the Ektachrome 100 stuff I’ve seen on the Net seems so warm compared to the stuff from the 70s and 80s but your images really show that the cooler greens and blues are still there.

      It really is amazing! I’ve adapted Mamiya 645 lenses and they’re amazing.

    i dont think that was lab's fault. In fact, there is a large number of portra400(120 / July 2024) were not properly preserved during transportation. You'd better not use those films to shoot serious projects

    35mm 500T smokes Porta every day of the week. No need for 120.

    Hello. You made a very good video. I'm asking for advice. If I were to choose a range finder between VL / VI-L / P, which one do you recommend I choose? Why? I'm new to this type of camera. And chrome lenses, size 50 mm. 1.4 or 1.2, which one is better?

      If you’re planning on just using a 50mm, I’d say go for the VI-L or the P, but if you might be interested in using a 35mm lens, I’d 100% suggest going for the VI-L

      @@michaelbennettphoto If you could choose only 1 thing, which one would you choose? Because of what?
