Took my son down to see the whale last week. Supper windy and perfect conditions to see it.

Nice. Allegedly it should be swept away by the tide in the next week or two.

Wow, I'd have gone in a heartbeat to get that close to such an animal. Had anything been on it, with all that ripped open carcass? It will be interesting to see what the scientists find. Thanks for sharing such a different and unique experience!

@@MooseManNaturePhotos I initially heard about it a week ago, and when my son got home for Thanksgiving he wanted to go see it.

Is it still there ? Where did you start walking ?

    • @RaisedinAlaska

I believe it is still there, but will likely be washed away in the next week or two by the high tide series. We started at Westchester Lagoon and walked toward turning an arm. Keep going till you go over a bridge there and then there’s a beaten down pathway leading to it.

Sad, but cool, too. Are any parts of it used by locals (whale oil, for instance?), or is it illegal to do so?

@@readytogo6569 Alaska natives can harvest marine mammals.

@ I knew that a long time ago but didn’t know if it was still true. Thank you. Were any of those cuts from Natives, or all researchers? And, can Natives share their takings? Sorry bout all the q’s. I just find the lifestyle fascinating.

@readytogo6569 I don’t mind questions, I frequently watch videos from people who live a complete different lifestyle and I and find it fascinating.
I believe some of the pieces that were removed from the whale were probably from Alaskan natives. It is common that Alaskan natives use parts of sea mammals as artwork, and then they are able to sell them.

That is gonna smell yummy come spring/summer.

That say there is a high tide series in a couple weeks that may carry it out to open water. Then again, it might just bring it in closer to Anchorage and drop it off again.😂

4 weeks in the future reporting, still there.

@ I heard it was still there and that the tide hadn’t taken it away. Sure hope it is carried back out to sea before summer.
