It is instructive to note how the Eucharist is the dividing line between Apostolic and non-Apostolic.

@@GizmoFromPizmo I don't want to sound rude, but your comment is childish and irrelevant. You may call the Eucharist whatever you want, but it still is what it is. These terms are invented terms, but it doesn't mean they are false, they just were made in order to reinforce the specific purpose of their meaning. The same goes for terms like 'Most Holy Trinity', 'baptismal regeneration', 'hypostatic union', etc. You can be stubborn and act like these don't matter at all, however, the meaning matters, and the more you avoid calling these doctrines by their proper name, the more they can be corrupted and misunderstood.
You can just refuse to call a chair by its name, for example, let's say you want to call it by its proper etymological roots in Latin, 'cathedra'. The new name might fit good for you, but it doesn't mean people will take it the same way. People will still call it a chair and won't take you seriously whenever you call it a 'cathedra', because the current term is culturally acceptable. Though the point here is not discussing cultural meaning, but rather theological meaning, similar logic can be applied.
The reason why the Gospels refer to the scene of the Eucharist between Christ and the Apostles as the Last Supper before the Crucifixion is because it was a literal feast, a meal between them to celebrate the Easter, the Passover. Obviously, it wasn't just a meal, as Christ Himself resignifies it through the verses, and that's why the term 'Eucharist' is more fitting. This is even reinforced when Apostle Paul exhorts the Church on the partaking of the Eucharist (1 Co. 11: 20-22), appointing its purpose as the offer of Christ's sacrifice rather than just having a good time of everyone eating and drinking along.
Heretical sects have often interpreted the Eucharist as a mere symbol to remember Christ (since gnostic times), when remembering Christ is just one of the many complex aspects of the Eucharist. The preference for calling it Supper rather than Eucharist is just a symptom of how recluded and burdened these hearts are from the truth, a faith founded by the Apostles and alive through the Church under the authority conceived by them. The reason why people still insist in protesting against doctrine is not because of 'seeking the truth', even if the Protestant Reformation didn't happen, Christians would still find a way to doubt from the Church and deviate from it, using fallacies against it.

@@nerdkidd05 What you say is erroneous in the extreme. What you omit to say about the Eucharist is that the RCC considers it a SACRIFICE, which it never was meant to be, and ESPECIALLY not the sacrifice given at Calvary BEFORE IT EVEN HAPPENED YET the following day. That is pure science fiction. Nevertheless, your church teaches that is exactly what happened; namely that Christ gave himself in sacrifice at THE LAST SUPPER (CCC 621).
      NO WAY.
He gave himself only once, that is, no sooner and no later than on Calvary's cross, period, case closed.
Furthermore, your reference to Paul exhorting the Church on the partaking of the Eucharist in 1 Cor 11 proves absolutely nothing on the Catholic side, but in facts, refutes it. All he said was "eat the bread and drink" THREE times. Did you get that? No mention of body and blood, and no mention that communion should be ONLY the bread, which 99% of Catholics do at Mass every week, contrary to the command of Christ to take BOTH.

@@ThornyCrown-l5d The heresy you just accused the Catholic Doctrine of erring in was just formally anathematized by the Catholic Church. There is NO doctrine to teach that Christ has been sacrificed more than once out of the Calvary. The act of sacrifice present in the sacrament is by no means Christ dying again, it is merely the participation of the very same act done by Christ in the past, to be lived by Christians over and over for eternity.
Yes, the Catholic Church considers the Eucharist to be a sacrifice, a belief that ANY Christian should believe, regardless of the denomination. Also, Paul didn't affirm a doctrine of memorialism in bread and wine by calling it 'bread and wine', actually, it isn't wrong to call the host bread and wine, it is just wrong to affirm it is transformed into Christ's body and blood after consecration.
In his first epistle to the Corinthians, when addressing about the Eucharist, Paul would exhort them to not partake in the Eucharist with sin or else they would 'eat and drink damnation' to themselves. This by no means should be interpreted metaphorically or in any other way than literally and physically. Paul gives great importance to discerning Christ's body and blood in flesh, by consuming it.
If you are worried about how the rite is done, the host is the bread dipped in wine. There are a plenty of videos in this channel explaining why the Eucharist is biblical, I won't bother try explaining it in a comment section.

@@GizmoFromPizmo I would like to begin by offering my appreciation for your acknowledgement of the reality of the Eucharist. It is a difficult teaching, and one which scared off many - but you submit to this teaching from Christ, which is admirable.
On your other points, however, I respectfully disagree. Firstly, I deny that it is our faith which effects certain things: it is God, operating through us and our faith which ultimately effects things such as miracles. There are many things which God effects by means of certain signs or words. For example, consider the Bronze serpent crafted by Moses. Yes, the people had faith (somewhat) in God, but He still commanded that an external action be done in order to save them from the fiery serpents. As an aside - I would heavily caution your irreverence toward the Words of Institution. Those are the same words said by Christ, reducing them to "secret words" said by a "magic man" is insulting and unlikely either to afford you grace or friends.
I believe and would argue that the miracle of the Eucharist is inexorably tied to the miracle of the priesthood. This is explicable from Scripture and affirms the Catholic position. Allow me to present this explanation:
      1. The Eucharist is a sacrificial act of worship. We see this clearly in St. Paul's comparison of the Lord's table to that of the Passover table and the Pagans' tables (cf. 1 Cor. 10). Therefore, outside of the individual faith of those participating, something greater is occurring. The question is then, by what means?
      2. This sacrifice is to be done by a sacramental Priesthood. In the First Letter of St. Peter, he proclaims to the sojourning Christians: "But you are a chosen generation, a kingly priesthood, a holy nation, a purchased people..." (2:9). This is very telling language, as God previously addressed Israel in the same manner, calling them a nation of Priests (cf. Exodus 19:6). We know logically that Israel did in fact possess an ordained, sacrificial Priesthood: the Levites.
      3. Your response may be to claim that this has changed, and that all believers in the New Covenant are in fact Priests. However, Isaiah prophesied otherwise, saying: "They shall bring all your kindred from all the nations as an offering to the Lord, on horses, and in chariots, and in litters, and on mules, and on dromedaries, to my holy mountain Jerusalem, says the Lord...[a]nd I will also take some of them as priests and as Levites, says the Lord." (66:20-21). We thus know that God intended and planned from before Christ to institute a system where all the nations of the Earth would gather and sacrifice to Him by means of His Priests, which we see fulfilled in the Priesthood of Christ and the ordination of the Apostles and their successors.
Thus, we see that Christ did intend for a sacramental, sacrificial priesthood on the pattern of the Levites. We see that this sacrifice requires a Priesthood, not simple personal faith. We see that this is not an addition, but was fully intended from the beginning.
I hope that this is a useful reply and wish you well. God bless!

Joe, I was born and raised LDS, but as I became convicted that that tradition was built on lies I made a decision to recommit my life to Christ and be baptized as a Christian about a year and a half ago. That was done in an Evangelical setting because that's where my wife wanted to go and I didn't know enough about Christianity proper to think to do differently. It's been a fun journey since then as I've sought to walk with Christ and understand how Christianity has found itself so divided. I'm still at a relatively formative stage with my beliefs, and your channel has been incredibly helpful breaking down barriers I had with Catholicism, some of which I wasn't even aware were there until after you clarified a teaching or position I thought I understood, but really didn't.
I attended a cycle of OCIA and watched as many members of my group joined the church at Easter Vigil earlier this year. I wasn't able to join for now, for reasons not really worth getting into here, but I loved my walk with the church and remain committed to learning all I can about it. For now, I attend a Lutheran church and love the congregation that's taken me in and continued to teach me.
One thing that has caused me to feel comfortable there, as opposed to the evangelical/non-denom settings I first found myself in when leaving the tradition of my youth, is that I've gained a strong appreciation for a sacramental understanding about church and theology that just doesn't exist in those places. Videos like this help reinforce that. My mind was actually blown when you were teaching about the connection between our participation in the Eucharist being what actually constitutes us as part of the body of Christ as His church. These are concepts I was familiar with separately and yet never really was able to make this connection before. I've been enriched by this and truly appreciate you taking the time to put this together.
At the risk of making this way to long I'd like to put in a request for a future video. One thing I'm still trying to discern and understand is the nature of what makes a church's Eucharist "valid". I know this is an area where Catholics and Protestants are strongly divided, but in light of the aforementioned connection with the Eucharist and the church as Christ's body, it seems especially crucial to get right. The deacon that was in charge of our OCIA group implied that the Catholic position here had something to do with the limited way in which Jesus instituted the Eucharist only among the 12 at the Last Supper, but I never really got it more fleshed out than that. If you find the time, that would be a huge help for me and potentially others trying to discern the same as part of a future video. Thanks either way. God bless, and keep up the good work.

Jesus is not reduced to a sacrament on an alter! He is in heaven bodily !
Interceding for us! He will return bodily one day! A glorified body.
You cannot daily turn a piece of bread into his flesh or the wine into blood by says a few prayers over them!
A thousand of your priests do not have the power to do that and God never said they were to do it! It doesn’t happen! The Israelites built a golden calf and the priest said this is your God who fought you out of Egypt! The people worshiped it as their God killed them on the spot!
Your priests point to a piece of bread and say this is your God who saved you - and you worship it! No difference. The Calf was not God and the bread is not God.! Idolatry and God hates idolatry!

@Thorerx. What I want to know is why CATHOLICS don’t believe that they eat the literal body and blood, soul and divinity of Christ? You eat a morsel or sip a sip and call it the entire Jesus, body and soul. Why not sit down at the Table and eat a whole body’s worth of bread? (Because you seriously DON’T believe it’s literally true!)
Why do your theologians admit that your teeth do not rip apart the flesh of Christ? That the transformation is not CRASSLY carnal? You’re not a bunch of hyena’s devouring a corpse!
Why does the Eucharist END as soon as the bread enters your gullet, no longer discernible as crumbs of bread? Catholics DO NOT digest the body of Christ! Heaven forbid! Or pass him from their bodies! So, technically, they DO NOT eat him. No more than a bulemic who downs a slice of sausage and pepperoni only to immediately purge that pizza actually ate anything. She sure didn’t gain any nutrition, did she?
And look at the Eucharistic miracles!! Whole body of Christ found anywhere you know of? Or just slices of heart muscle or coagulated drops of blood?
Transubstantiation is just as thoroughly spiritually mediated as consubstantiation, impanation, spiritual presence, and a whole “host” of other, alternative explanations of the Real Presence. Catholics DO NOT have a leg up on us! Their version is simply NOT more corporeal in nature. They just say it more confidently.

@Thorex. Concomitance just means that you receive the entirety of Christ in either the wine or the bread (or both). It’s irrelevant to my argument. Yes, glorified flesh…which means it’s SPIRITUAL. The biblical view of spirituality is NOT non-physical.
Not a symbol. Ok. Efficacious and real. Ok, again. (Just as in Magisterial Protestantism.)
But transubstantiation is clearly, clearly, clearly spiritually mediated as in Protestantism. (And you came nowhere close to refuting that.)

@janeyount8412. You can call the Eucharist a blessing, a communion, a participation, a fellowship. What you cannot call it is a sacrifice of our Lord. He was sacrificed once for all in a completely unrepeatable act.
You can call the Eucharist a sacrifice of thanksgiving and praise (especially since that’s what it means) or a consecration of the recipient in self-sacrifice, a surrender of one’s entire life in service to the King. But it is not sacerdotal. That aspect of the Atonement is relegated to the Cross…and to the Cross alone!

@Cklert. Yes, I’ve heard that, but it just doesn’t jibe with the Council of Trent. The Mass is a second and separate sacrifice/offering/oblation which is propitiatory in its own right. Sure, its power and significance come from the Cross. But it is more than a simple re-presentation.
If you accept that the Eucharist merely applies what the One Sacrifice accomplished, all well and good. But that basically leaves you as a Protestant in good standing…and with no need for sacerdotal priests.

      @PalermoTrapani 3 місяці тому +2

Saint Irenaeus was quoting from John 8:57 which does say Christ was not yet 50, so Saint Ireanaus never says Christ was 50, He just cites John 8:57 to refute the Gnostics. if Christ was born between what is actually 6 to 4 BC and died in 33 AD, he was perhaps actually 39 at his death. So in reality, there is not clear text in the Gospels about how old Christ actually was at the time of His passion, death and resurrection. Luke 3:23 does say Christ was about 30 years of age when He began His public ministry. Saint Irenaus does quote from all 4 Gospels but it could be a textual variant that said Christ was 50 in John 8:57 and maybe He did not have a complete copy of Luke thus no Luke 3:23.
But did Saint Ireanaus actually say He was 50, I think it was an argument with the Gnostics about when a Teacher becomes a Master Teacher, Irenaeaus said 30 was appropriate but to refute the Gnostics He Christ may have been 40 to use it as an apologetic to say Christ was older than 30 and near 40 (thus more appropriate for a Master Teacher) which would be totally supported by John 8:57 "you are not yet 50".

@jayguevara6153. In general, most Protestants lend a lot of credence to the things Irenaeus wrote. In this particular case, there is no way to choose between an outright description of something akin to consubstantiation and how Joe interpreted it. Context gives you no right whatever to go Joe’s route. In fact, the TEXT itself seems to mitigate against Joe’s take on things.
The test says that “For as the bread…is no longer common bread.” In other words, what it becomes is indeed more than just bread. It is uncommon bread. It is enhanced bread. But the text never even implies that it is less than bread…or that the bread disappears. In fact, no early text declares anything even close to that. No early church father says anything at all about the bread disappearing. About its being the body, blood, soul, and divinity of Christ AND NOTHING ELSE!!
In other words, we have the Real Presence clearly in evidence. What we don’t have is any evidence for Transubstantiation.

Hi Joe. Thanks for the video. I am currently a non-denominational Protestant but your videos are definitely drawing me towards Catholicism.
One problem I still have with the Catholic Church is its eschatology. I’m a premillennialist (not so sure about a pre-tribulation rapture though!). However, from my understanding the Catholic Church has generally held an amillennialist view since St. Augustine (although apparently earlier church fathers did hold premillennialist beliefs).
I have read on the internet that premillennialism was condemned at the council of Ephesus, but cannot find any evidence for this.
I have also read that the use of the phrase ‘and his kingdom will have no end’ in the Nicene Creed essentially rules out premillennialism (although I’m not convinced this is a necessary implication).
The only definite teachings of the Catholic Church I could find on this matter are Catechism 676 and a reference to the ‘Holy Office’ saying that millennarianism ‘cannot safely be taught’.
So my question is this: Is amillennialism actually dogmatically defined by the Catholic Church or is holding a premillennialist belief permissible (even if it’s not taught or recommended)?

    • @janeyount8412
      @janeyount8412 3 місяці тому +2

I really hope that the Catholic amillenialist belief isn't a deal-breaker for you! I would ask you, why is holding onto premillenialism so important to you? Is it for fear of the tribulation? Remember, Jesus said to pick up your cross and be not afraid. Trust him. He will take care of you during the tribulation.🙏🌹

    • @gregorymiles8281
      @gregorymiles8281 2 місяці тому

@@janeyount8412 thanks for your response. As long as premillennialism is not totally condemned as heresy, it’s not a deal-breaker. But if it is condemned as heresy then it would certainly make things difficult for me!
No, my premillennialist belief is not due to a fear of the tribulation (although I know it will be a terrible time for the whole world) - I haven’t formed a belief as to whether the rapture happens pre-, mid- or post- tribulation - so I am open to the idea that Christians are present on Earth during the tribulation. Rather I believe in premillennialism because of the testimony of scriptures such as Revelation 20, Isaiah 65:20 and Zechariah 14 among others.
It is also worth noting that several early church fathers expressed strong belief in a millennial kingdom of Christ’s reign on Earth such as Irenaeus and Justin Martyr.
So what I really want to know is this: is premillennialism a permissible belief to hold as a Catholic or is it forbidden?

    • @janeyount8412
      @janeyount8412 2 місяці тому +2

@gregorymiles8281 What I do know is that the notion of a pretrib rapture is considered heresy by not only the Catholic Church, but also the older Protestant sects. It was popularized in the 1800's by an Evangelical preacher, so its a relatively new innovation. The Church teaches amillenialism, based on the Scriptures that support that view, but I do not think it's a dogma set in stone. The Catholic Answers website (and other Catholic apologetics websites) has more info on the topic.

As a life long Catholic, I’ve never been more convicted & convinced of His Real True Presence in the Eucharist, largely through my lived experience. Even Luther believed this! You’re effectively rejecting His teaching Jn 6:51-58 1 Cor 10:13-17
Jesus commanded an unbloody REPRESENTATION of Calvary Jn 6 51-58 with the priest in persona Christi acting as Jesus the high priest offering Him as victim to His Father. When the priest says, MY body MY blood, it is not that of the priest but that of Jesus. Yes, Christ died once for all our sins, but He commanded perpetual propitiatory sacrifice for our sins which the early church commenced doing. Jesus has forgiven our sins, however, reparation still needs to be made via the Holy Mass
The Holy Mass has been offered daily since the time of the early church, read the early fathers.

The bottom line here is when the bread and wine consecrated by Priest of Catholic Church, the bread and wine become flesh and blood of Our Lord Jesus Christ, and anybody receive it properly ( after confession and repent sins and receive absolution)
will unite with Jesus Christ as branch of The Vine Jesus Christ and therefore will receive life. That's why st. PAUL said I live but not I but Jesus Christ lives in me.

Um, er, uh'. Jesus said: "Do THIS is in remembrance of me." He meant the Passover. Not chewing and swallowing the meat and unleavened bread:
Jesus equates the matzah with his body at the Last Supper with his disciples (Luke 22:19). He broke the bread and distributed it to his disciples saying, “This is my body, which is [broken] for you” (1 Corinthians 11:24). Today, matzah is often used as a communion element to remember Jesus’ sacrifice. The matzah is meant to remind us that Yeshua’s body was broken. Interestingly, the modern way of producing matzah causes it to be striped and pierced. Some Jewish believers see this as a kind of “visual midrash” that reminds us that the Messiah’s body was “striped” (Isaiah 53:5, KJV) and “pierced” (Zechariah 12:10; Revelation 1:7).
Further, just as leaven causes bread to rise, sin puffs us up. At Passover, we remove all leaven from our homes, not only in memory of the haste with which we departed Egypt, but also as a symbol of removing sin from our lives. The apostle Paul charges us to: “Cleanse out the old leaven that you may be a new lump, as you really are unleavened. For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed” (1 Corinthians 5:7). - jewsforjesus.org/learn/the-passover-symbols-and-their-messianic-significance

The problem with the contrast between "physical body" and "spiritual body" is that it is a bad translation its self. Literaly it is rather the contrast between "psychic body" and "Spiritual body" as between what is mearly human which came from the first Adam who was "of the earth earthly" who "became a living soul (psyche)" and the "man from heaven" who "became a lifegiving Spirit." Ie. the contrast is between a body merely inlivened by our own soul and one enlivened also by the Spirit of Christ who as God and man brought us more than we have of our own power which when deprived of God's grace lost immortality so that we return to the dust, but which by Christ's Divine power is restored. "Physical" if it were understood as "natural," (to which it realy ought to be equivalent as derived from "phusis" the Greek equivalent of "natura") I guess could serve as a somewhat equivalent translation, though it would lose the paralelism with Adam as living soul from earlier in the passage. Unfortunately though in English physical pretty well means "bodily," so it is a very bad and confusion causing translation even though "pychic" is pretty awkard (maybe "soulish;" I dont know what would be a good translation).

I am neither gnostic neither catholic. I think it is good to have a body so that we may enjoy the physical graces of God. But how literally this body will be made of flesh at the resurrection ? In Corinthians 15 it is for instance written that flesh and blood can not inherit the kingdom of God. So how literally the resurrected body of Jesus-Christ is now made of flesh and blood ? And what is that link that catholics make between the Lord supper and John 6 ? In one case he is always talking about giving his body to eat, in the other he talks about giving his flesh to eat. Eating a body is not necessary the same concept as eating flesh, at least in a biblical view. Moreover when we are talking about a spiritual glorified body as the one of our Lord Jesus-Christ.

      Three things:
      1) Is not Christ's body composed of -the- *His* flesh?
      2) From John 1, we know that in the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God, and that the Word became flesh and dwelt among us.
      3) Did you not notice that Jesus ate a fish with his resurrected body? Consider the implications.

    • @vinciblegaming6817
      @vinciblegaming6817 3 місяці тому

First, we want to delineate between “the flesh” and “Jesus’s flesh”. These two are not synonymous and what is said about “the flesh” is not true about “Jesus’s flesh.”
Second, the manner in which “the flesh” is frequently used in the NT is colloquially or idiomatically to refer to worldly or human thinking, wisdom, and knowledge. The flesh cannot profit a man if he loses his soul - human/worldly wisdom is meaningless if it costs us our soul.
If you collect all the flesh references and remove the references to Jesus’s flesh, you can get a pretty accurate idea that it is meant in such a way.
Paul makes it quite clear we believe in a bodily resurrection, so if these ideas you have about inheriting the kingdom of God contradict, then your understanding is off in one or the other and needs re-evaluation.
I hope this helps! God bless.

Every Christian theology of the Lord’s table, if it is scriptural, will be a buffer against gnostic denial of the importance of the body and the original goodness of physical creation.
This is because the elements, at the very least and even in a low view of mere symbolism where God is not acting through the event but the participant is the only actor (which many, many Protestants who hold to the spiritual presence view would deny), even here, the meaning of the bread and the wine point to the real body and blood of Jesus that was poured out for us.
This alone is a bar against Gnosticism.
As you say, Ignatius, doesn’t say how the Eucharist acts on us.
The fact that the Roman Church has settled on a transubstantiation view-which is a spiritual view because the bead and wine are not changed in their outward appearance, but then insists that it is physical because it is changed inwardly in its substance-does not mean that this view should be mandatory.
There are multiple ways that this sacrament can be understood in the “how” of its reality. And they all affirm Jesus’ real humanity and divinity.
The difference between the Roman, Lutheran, and Calvinist views on real presence have so much agreement in them, that it really takes connecting it to a larger systematic theology (like between Luther and Calvin on the whether Jesus’ physical body has become omnipresent, or the Aristotelian philosophical distinctions on the Roman side) for the differences to even become meaningful.
Why can’t we just be happy with the basic agreement that the elements point to Christ’s whole person and our union with him through faith, confession, repentance, and reconciliation.
We agree about that, so why dogmatize over the “how” rather than the “that” of Christ’s presence?
This level of detail is not necessary to reject Gnosticism, and it only has furthered disunity and schism in the community of Christ.
Why was the Roman bar ratcheted up so high in its particularity as to force a divide the church. Is that really necessary?

By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God; and every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God; this is the spirit of the antichrist, of which you have heard that it is coming, and now it is already in the world.”

There's actually a lot we agree on here. Yes, the Eucharist is the true body and blood--and we ought to be able to affirm, with St. Paul, that in receiving bread and wine, one participates in the real body and blood.
Now, you don't touch this issue in your video, so I won't write it as a critique of what you've presented here. However, I do think Irenaeus's view is actually a problem for transubstantiation accounts of how the body and blood are present in the bread and wine. Irenaeus uses it quite explicitly as an analogy for how physical bodies can receive the divine life without ceasing to be what they are:
"“For as the bread, which is produced from the earth, when it receives the invocation of God, is no longer common bread, but the Eucharist, consisting of two realities, earthly and heavenly; so also our bodies, when they receive the Eucharist, are no longer corruptible, having the hope of the resurrection to eternity.” (IV.XVIII.5) You quoted this in your video, but the analog--the "so also" phrase--is crucial here. Irenaeus says just as the Eucharist consists of two realities, so also our bodies. And in Book V, you quoted where Irenaeus says "as the Eucharist receives the Word and becomes the body, so also our bodies, receiving the Eucharist, will be raised to everlasting life." The Eucharist would not be a good analogy for the resurrection of the body if the "earthly reality" remaining in the Eucharist was only the sheer appearance of bread and wine. In fact, it would be an analogue for the Gnostic view--that it only "appears" to be what it is, but in truth is something else.

One of the great triumphs of the early church was the Creed of Chalcedon (451 AD) but it is also the creed that makes it clear that the doctrine of transubstantiation is gnostic. Let me quote it in full first: "Following, then, the holy Fathers, we all unanimously teach that our Lord Jesus Christ is to us One and the same Son, the Self-same Perfect in Godhead, the Self-same Perfect in Manhood; truly God and truly Man; the Self-same of a rational soul and body; co-essential with the Father according to the Godhead, the Self-same co-essential with us according to the Manhood; like us in all things, sin apart; before the ages begotten of the Father as to the Godhead, but in the last days, the Self-same, for us and for our salvation (born) of Mary the Virgin Theotokos as to the Manhood; One and the Same Christ, Son, Lord, Only-begotten; acknowledged in Two Natures unconfusedly, unchangeably, indivisibly, inseparably; the difference of the Natures being in no way removed because of the Union, but rather the properties of each Nature being preserved, and (both) concurring into One Person and One Hypostasis; not as though He was parted or divided into Two Persons, but One and the Self-same Son and Only-begotten God, Word, Lord, Jesus Christ; even as from the beginning the prophets have taught concerning Him, and as the Lord Jesus Christ Himself hath taught us, and as the Symbol of the Fathers hath handed down to us."
Let me also quote the great anti-gnostic opening to St. John's first letter: “That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, concerning the Word of life- the life was manifested, and we have seen, and bear witness, and declare to you that eternal life which was with the Father and was manifested to us- that which we have seen and heard we declare to you, that you also may have fellowship with us; and truly our fellowship is with the Father and with His Son Jesus Christ. And these things we write to you that your joy may be full.” 1 John 1:1-4
So, note how John's argument is based on the general reliability of the senses. Christ's physical 100% human body could be reliably sensed using the eyes and sight, using hands and touch, which was proof that the gnostics were wrong. It is also proof that transubstantiation is wrong since the imagined physical presence of the whole man of Jesus, flesh and blood is entirely present in both the bread and in the wine. To believe in transubstantiation is to demand that God's image bearers, who were designed to have generally reliable information about God's good creation by using their five senses are forced to reject this in the mass and believe that their senses are totally unreliable and that what looks like, smells like, tastes like, feels like and even sounds like bread in reality contains an entire human being, toenails and all. Then this same human being (toenails and all) simultaneously appears in wine to the denial of our God-given senses. This is pure gnosticism.
The Creed of Chalcedon makes it clear that that the both in the incarnation and in the resurrection the eternal Son of God added to himself a temporally and spatially limited form. In other words, as he was 100% human he could only appear in one place at a time and had all our spatial and temporal limitations. All creedal Christians believe that Jesus ascended bodily into heaven and is currently seated at the right hand of God the Father and his truly human body and blood will remain there until he returns at the end of the church age for the final judgement and to make the new heavens and new earth. His human body can still be touched, seen etc using ordinary human senses, but because he is remote from us we can't experience his humanity (yet) like the apostles did. However, because as the divine nature of the eternal Son of God is not spatially or temporally limited to his true human nature in heaven, by his Spirit he is able to dwell among his people in his church and in the hearts of Christians. (see Col. 1:27, Matt. 18:20 )
So how is it possible to understand Jesus words? “Whoever eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day. For My flesh is food indeed, and My blood is drink indeed.” John 6:54-55 and ““Take; this is my body.” And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he gave it to them, and they all drank of it. And he said to them, “This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many.” Mark 14:22-24 The only non-gnostic interpretation of the Lord's Supper that does justice to the Creed of Chalcedon and these verses is the Calvinist/Reformed explanation. Christ is spiritually present in both the hearts of believers and in the bread and wine and because his Spirit is " unconfusedly, unchangeably, indivisibly, inseparably" joined to his true human nature in heaven, although we eat earthly bread and drink earthly wine with our bodies, our souls feed spiritually on all the power and grace Christ's resurrected body and atoning blood in heaven For us humans, there is a essential union between our body and soul (which can be temporarily separated from our bodies at death until the resurrection, when body and soul shall be eternally reunited in the new heavens and new earth. This essential union between our bodies and souls means that although our feeding on the physical body and blood of Christ is only a spiritual feeding, our bodies are blessed as well by this feeding. And because of the unconfused unchangeable, indivisible and inseparable union between Christ's human and divine natures, we are not getting "second best" when we feed spiritually on Christ. We get the whole of Christ ( unconfusedly, unchangeably, indivisibly, inseparably) in the blessing of the Lord's Supper.

Any Catholic theologians out there, please chime in. It seems clear that at the inauguration of the New Covenant (Last Supper/Passover), Jesus was physically present with the disciples such that when he said "this is my body...this is my blood", he was speaking symbolically. As it would be a true contradiction to say that Jesus was bodily present at both the table, and in the bread and wine, how do we make the transition to what the Church practices as the Eucharist?

Not a theologian here but the 1st step would be is to believe God can and does miraculous and mystical things. And sometimes what “seems” like what we humans want to see and believe is not what God actually is doing or saying. The Trinity is another example that non-Trinitarians cannot see or understand yet it is true.

The words daily bread, in their original language, refer to supernatural bread or Eucharist! If you don’t believe in His Real Presence, investigate Eucharistic miracles, signs from God which science can’t explain with the same AB blood type & living heart tissue. Visit Carlos Acutis
If the Eucharist is not His One True Presence, why do Satanists steal consecrated hosts from Catholic parishes for desecration at sacrilegious black masses, not something that happens to Protestantism because of its belief of symbolism
Read Mal 1:11 with gentiles offering pure sacrifice at all times in all places with the CC doing exactly that daily in most parishes around the world.
Without altars & no liturgical sacrificial worship, Protestantism generally, doesn’t have proper worship, so not “church”, but, truthfully, more like synagogue with prayer & teaching!

BUT ... the Gnostics were early Christians too. We don't have the benefit of a full exposition of their theology because they were suppressed, and their writings ordered destroyed. This is like conducting a debate with the opposing side gagged.
What is "just a matter of history" is that the key to the direction taken in ancient Christianity was not so much compelling arguments about the nature of faith, but the whims of Constantine. It was ultimately a matter of politics within the Roman Empire.

    • @JohnStarkey-u6z
      @JohnStarkey-u6z 2 місяці тому

@IsraeliteDefense Then he said to them, “Give therefore to the emperor the things that are the emperor’s, and to God the things that are God’s.” Matthew 22:21
The corrupting consequence of accepting the protection of Emperor Constantine, and later Emperor Theodosius' decree of state religion, for those Christians amenable to it was that they ultimately 'gave to the Emperor the things that are God's'.
      As Lord Acton observed:
“Power tends to corrupt and absolute power corrupts absolutely.” “Despotic power is always accompanied by corruption of morality.”
Studying history allows us the opportunity of realising a fuller understanding of things. Notably, Acton's now-famous axiom about power was addressed to the Archbishop of Canterbury. Acton was a Roman Catholic who took issue with the moral relativism of the Archbishop's approach to the history of the Inquisition. In a letter to the Archbishop, Acton's observations on power addressed how historians ought to evaluate the abuse of power by those who have held significant authority - namely rulers, and especially Popes.
Many of the Gnostic documents of the Nag Hamadi library are more important to the study of early Christianity than the Dead Sea scrolls. They offer invaluable insights into how the earliest followers of Jesus understood him. This was a 'pre-Church' era when Christians followed 'the Way'.
If you think it's heretical to ask questions, then you'd best consider how Jesus taught using parables.

    • @JohnStarkey-u6z
      @JohnStarkey-u6z 2 місяці тому

@IsraeliteDefense Well, you turned this into a debate with your one-word declaration: "False!" (with an exclamation mark, no less).
So what did you judge as false:
•The assertion that there were Christian Gnostics?
•That that school of Gnosticism was suppressed?
•That Gnostic writings were methodically destroyed?
•That Constantine played a pivotal role in the establishment of the institutionalised Church?
Some Biblical scholars suggest that portions of the Gospel of Thomas found at Nag Hammadi represent the earliest surviving written Christian text, placing Gnostics among the earliest Jesus people.
If you are a serious student of the various threads of Christian thought, then you ought to consider how frail is the substance underpinning an established "Church". The gatherings of early Christians were democratic assemblies, not hierarchical institutions. That's why "ekklesia" was the word chosen to describe them.
Even if you choose to ignore the evidence in Acts that James was the final authority in the early church, and opt for the primacy of Peter, only Matthew provides that perspective. Nor can Peter be removed from his description as a stumbling block, his being called Satan, his thrice denial of Jesus.
I referenced the 'render unto Caesar' injunction because it fits so deftly the criticism Jesus had of Peter: "you are setting your mind not on divine things but on human things." It isn't simply an observation about the coin of the realm. It is an analogy about differing obligations. Subsequently, the Imperial Christian Church became very much a worldly thing - a tool of the Caesars, and eventually their heir.
In retrospect, the institutionalised church has been so effectively conflated with the notion of faith itself that it makes it difficult for us now to imagine Christianity without real estate and hierarchy. Yet Jesus never set up a splinter ekklesia. His worship occurred at the temple or in synagogues. He was concerned for the shepherding of his students and followers, not for the building of the structure we now call the church. Jesus was a Jew who sought to effect a course correction for God's covenant people.
As for the condemnation of heterodox questions, it's the provider of this video content who calls the Gnostics heretics. It's an attitude that insults the notion of Christian charity, and the promise that "in my Father's house there are many rooms."

It is a time of really meditating on the cost of our salvation!
The elements remain bread and wine but remind us of He flesh and blood given for us!
If we take it unworthily that means we are taking it and not recognising the significance of what we are doing - or we have not examined ourselves regarding sin and faith - maybe we are not believers at all but just treating it as a ritual of no great meaning.

The eucharist is an idol; a false doctrine built upon a false comprehension of Scripture in the form of another false doctrine called 'Transubstantiation'. This doctrine 'Transubstantiation' is the foundation of the eucharist, and also it's most clear and fatal flaw.
Transubstantiation is false because it simply cannot be real; if one is to read Scripture in light of its revelation, context and linguistic properties unique to the commentators, the doctrine of 'Transubstantiation' cannot be developed; as such is clear within the testimony of many of the earliest Christian commentators.
The Catholic and Orthodox both believe in Transubstantiation, but they each have a different perspective of when bread and wine become flesh and blood; a difference that demonstrates an inconsistency in the doctrine; that can only be developed if there is existing flaws within the doctrine to begin with.
Here are some proofs as to why the doctrine of 'Transubstantiation' is false:
    1. If Jesus was speaking literally concerning the bread and wine literally being His body and blood, does that also mean that Jesus believed His body was shaped like a literal wooden door when He said, "I am the door" (John 10:7) Did Jesus have a door knob and hinges on His human body also? NO! Because He was speaking figuratively, just like when He said this bread and wine were His body and blood. ALSO, when Jesus said that about the elements of communion, Jesus was in His unharmed human body when He said it. If Jesus was speaking literally, then Jesus would have had to shed His blood BEFORE He was scourged and crucified on the cross. And then shed His blood again during the actual scourging and crucifixion. BUT Jesus body was not yet "broken for you" nor was Jesus' blood yet "shed for the remission of sin" because He had yet to be scourged and crucified. Therefore, what the Disciples and Christ partook in was nothing more than a supper; a feast, not a ceremony or a ritual; perfectly corroborating with Christs call to break bread and drink wine as a remembrance not of what was done (as nothing had yet been done) but what was TO COME; a celebration post-persecution preordained pre-persecution.
    2. Did Jesus also speak literally when He said that He was The Vine and we are the branches (John 15:1-5)? Does that mean Jesus is a literal plant that bears branches and fruit??? According to you, the answer would be Yes!
    3. Where exactly in the Bible does God endorse cannibalism? And drinking human blood? In fact, drinking blood is expressly forbidden by God. And, Oh yeah, Jesus is God (Leviticus 3:17; Acts 15:29)
    4. When John the Baptist saw Jesus and said, "Behold! The Lamb of God that takes away the sin of the world." Was John saying Jesus was covered in wool and walked on four legs?? According to your method of interpretation, the answer is YES. But according to the Bible, the answer is clearly NO. John was speaking figuratively, just as Jesus was at the Last Supper.
    5. According to Catholic doctrine, the so-called Eucharist, is a sacrifice. Each time it is performed, it is literally sacrificing Jesus afresh on the cross. BUT the Bible says Jesus' death on the cross was a once-and-for-all sacrifice in Hebrews 10. "But this Man, after He had offered one sacrifice for sins forever, sat down at the right hand of God" (Heb.10:12) "For by one offering He has perfected forever those who are being sanctified." (Heb.10:14) DID YOU HEAR WHAT GOD SAID, "ONE SACRIFICE FOR SIN FOREVER...BY ONE OFFERING"??
Of course, the truly critical flaw exists in transubstantiation because, if Christ does not reenter the world in the hands of a priest, and change in nature to exist within the host, then the wafer is exactly and only that: Just a wafer; containing nothing more than a couple of calories.
Transubstantiation is truly and clearly a false doctrine; rendered into existence by lazy exegesis and transmitted and defended by mere human traditions.
Regardless of what anyone says of the eucharist, because transubstantiation is false, the doctrine of the eucharist is rendered false instantly and exactly because the foundation upon which it is built is fictitious and clearly not of the true revelation of Scripture but an assault against common sense, human sensibilities and the revelation of God.

You are certainly welcome to believe and profess whatever you want to believe, there are plenty of differing beliefs in the world today. But to glean this from the historically decidedly Catholic Trinitarian book is just plain silly…
History shows us that Jesus didn't leave us a bible, - the apostles didn't tell us which books belong in the bible, - the church fathers never agreed on the 27 books of the NT through the 4th century and ONLY the 27 books, - not only did they not agree but their individual lists of would-be NT canons were GROWING during this time.
Therefore, if it wasn't the Catholic/Orthodox church, guided by the Holy Spirit, that compiled the 27 books of the NT in the 4th century, with the guidance of the Holy Spirit, and preserved these scriptures by laboriously hand copying them over and over throughout the centuries before the invention of the printing press, the “rule of faith” for many, please tell us who did? And if this church no longer exists today, what good is the text which came forth from her if she couldn't sustain herself?
      Peace!!!

Are you prepared to die for your belief in the symbolism of Eucharist? Can you name me some who died for that belief
Martyrs were willing to die defending their belief in His Real True Presence of whom examples are available as proof!

I KNOW my comments are VERY JARRING and VERY HURTFUL -- but I do it ON PURPOSE !!! ............................. I am VERY VERY INDIGNANTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT that the Catholic Church is EXTREMELY DOWNPLAYINGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG the Lord GOD Jesus' EXTREMEEEEEEEEEEEE SUFFERINGGGGGGGGGGGGGG and SHED BLOODDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD on THE CROSSSSSSSSSSSSSS to SAVE YOU AND ME and HYPINGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG to the MAXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX Mary -- when she was JUSTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT a SURROGATEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE Mother to HIM !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
