They took the makeup off in the early 80's, and the change really re-launched their career. In the mid 90's they reunited with their original drummer and lead guitarist and they put the makeup back on for the reunion tour. Even though those two left the band again, KISS kept the makeup on, and have ever since. But there was a period there for over a decade where the KISS makeup had disappeared. I entered junior high in 1984 and was introduced to heavy metal about that time. This was the first KISS song I remember hearing, so it's an all time favorite of mine. I remember being introduced to this song, another your reacted to today, Quiet Riot's "Metal Health," Twisted Sister's "I Wanna Rock," Ratt's "Round and Round," and Van Halen's "Panama," around the same time. From that point on, with a few exceptions for the likes of ZZ Top or Joan Jett, my boom box was playing metal all day, every day. And it worked out that I had the biggest boom box on the team, so I got to be the DJ on the bus to every football game for 6 years. So the team heard almost all metal all the time too. And with it being the 80's, they were all fine with that! God I miss the 80's. Two other KISS songs to check out. For a very similar vibe to this one, try "Lick it Up." And you have to listed to "I Love it Loud." That's an absolute must for any KISS fan.
@@paulwalsh2344 LOL! I'd say judging by album sales in the 80's, there are a lot of people about our age who had that same thought. I did the math once, and I have so many 80's metal songs on my PC that if I hit play, it wouldn't stop for about 6 weeks. One note I forgot to add to my original comment. I got to see KISS with Winger and Slaughter in August of 1990. When "Heaven's on Fire" was played, they had these flamethrowers on stage that had to have shot flames 20-30 feet in the air. I was 12 rows back, and the heat was so intense I had to put my hands in front of my face and turn away. How they stood being on stage right next to things was beyond me. When they brought out the old KISS sign with the flashing strobe lights for the last song, they blew the power transformer to the building. Took them 20 minutes to get enough power to one of the microphones to tell us all to go home. You can add Winger and Slaughter to your bands to check out. You already did a Slaughter ballad, but you really need to checkout "Up All Night" by them, and "Easy Come, Easy Go" does a great job of showing what Winger was like live.
All those albums that got slagged by the purists like Creatures/Animalize/Asylum/and LIU were bangers , Even Crazy Nights and Hot in the shade were decent .
I saw KISS twice as a teen during this era. Top notch entertainers! Big on crowd participation!! They made everyone feel like part of the coolest club on earth! And they had excellent sound engineers. Loud as Hell but crystal clear.
I just happened to have seen KISS back in what our kids call "the olden days" with a band I'd never heard of opening. It was RUSH. They became my favourite band that day. But KISS rocked the house with a stage show that was worth the price of admission by itself. That was 1975-76 and the tickets were less than $10.00 (Canadian, but still). For that show we got every penny of our money's worth 🤘😎
Yeah, I have seen them twice also. Sadly not when I was in high school, back in the 80's but my first time seeing them live was around 2003 with Aerosmith. Their show was still great but it was a little toned down from the shows I have seen on tape. There was some pyro but it was much tamer than what I have seen from earlier shows on video. Their next show I saw, in 2004 with Poison, the pyro was a little bigger but still not what you saw back in the 70's-90's.
The 80's were just the best time ever for me! I graduated high school in 1984. What a time to be alive! I can't tell you how many times my husband and I have seen Kiss! A live Kiss show is an experience!
Crazy nights. I was so happy I got to hear it live on the last tour. I waited a long time for it. It was extra cool that Gene was 2 feet from my face on a platform that swung up by our suite! Great farewell concert!!
Yeah! its sucky that so much of that era's material got sidelined for so long except for like KiSS cruises or whatever side project band , Heart did the same thing for so long "oh! we hate the 80s stuff" yeah! but WE don't lol .
KISS dropped the makeup in 1983, but brought it back in 1997 for the original lineup reunion. They released some great songs during the "No makeup" era, like "Tears Are Falling", "Crazy Crazy Nights", "Rise To It", "Deuce", "God Gave Rock & Roll To You II", "I Just Wanna", "Forever", "Reason To Live", and "Lick It Up".
Love them! My BFF is a huge fan! I surprised her with front row tickets for this tour and when it started everyone rushed the stage and we spent the whole concert as close as you can get. It was AMAZING! I still have a guitar pick tossed to me. We had such a blast! One hell of a show!
In 1991 they released their Revenge album. After the untimely death of their drummer, Eric Carr, they had to take a breather, but came back with a vengeance. They introduced the very first "Non-Brunette" player Eric Singer who is still their drummer today. Threw me for a loop the first time I saw the album. Songs to note on this album are Paralyzed, Unholy, Domino, God Gave Rock n Roll to You, and Every Time I Look At you
Revenge may just be my favorite Kiss Album of all time. As a matter of fact, you mentioned 2 of my top 5 Kiss songs of all time in your list (Unholy and Domino). The other 3 always have been and always will be Strutter, Cold Gin and War Machine. There's no particular order to them, they're all amazing in their own ways.
I absolutely love watching you guys and your reactions to KISS! I started listening to them when I was 5 years old in 1977. I remember how excited I was about them, their music, their look, and all of the artwork! You two make me remember how excited I was, and still am at times, about the greatest rock band ever. You wanted the best and you got the best the hottest band in the world KISS! There are so many great songs to choose from you guys just need to keep going and listen to them all.
This was their no makeup phase it started in 1983 and ended in 1996. I always think of my younger brother when I hear a Kiss song. He was really into them . He and his friends would dress up as Kiss and put on pretend concerts. They even made and painted fake guitars out of plywood. I came to appreciate Kiss as a very talented group. I especially enjoyed their solo Albums because it showcased their individual talents. Beth, I Was Made For Lovin' You, Mr. Make Believe and When You Wish Upon a Star(I kid you not Gene Simmons does a killer job on the song).
DAAAAAAAMN!!!! LOVE that y’all just did some 80’zzz KISS!!!! Try “Crazy Nights”, “Who Wants to be Lonely”, “Tears are Falling”, “Reason to Live” or even “Uh! All Night!” You can’t go wrong with either one 🤘🏽🖤🤘🏽🖤🤘🏽🖤🤘🏽🖤
I just had a nephew who passed away from cancer ♋️. He was only 52 years old. Kiss was by far his all time favorite band. This is the first time seeing any Kiss videos. He was a great hard working young man. I did not get to see him very often because of his location and my location. I just saw him in the hospital 🏥 early that week. He was in such good spirits. He knew that he was going to die. But you would have never known it from his actions. Only 52 years old did not drink or smoke. We have a lot of cancer ♋️ that runs in our family. He is in peace now with his Mother and Father. He did do the tobacco that you put in your mouth. It hadn’t done that for years though.
Yup, they took off their makeup during the early '80s. I like their 80's stuff as well. Other 80's tracks I like are "Lick it up" "Forever" and "Tears are falling"
80s Rock was awesome. Hair bands like Kiss, Bon Jovi, Quiet Riot, Twisted Sister, Poison, Motley Crue, Europe, Deff Lepppard, Whitesnake, Scorpions...those were the days. There were excellent metal bands like Judas Priest or Iron Maiden, Guns N'Roses, Van Halen and AC/DC embodied hard rock, Sex Pistols, The Clash or Ramones still on the radio, Queen being just gods... it's the best time ever.
Great reaction! Kiss has been legendary since they started. Rock stars have an image but Kiss fans are called the Kiss Army and the band was into merchandising even back in the 70’s! You can buy a custom painted waterproof full sized coffin with the pictures of Kiss painted on it to be buried in, and until then you can use it to keep your booze cold, that’s the whole point of making it waterproof! Gene had a TV series called Family Jewels that was on for several years.
Love them or hate them, one thing cannot be denied, they are marketing geniuses. Their first concert, they rented a limo. Early on they said "everyone wants to be like the Beatles, we want to be like Coca Cola". When glam rock was fading, they took their makeup off so people would take them seriously. When retro was in they put it back on. And of course, their music is catchy.
Gene Simmons didn't like the song "I was made for loving you" but it is actually my favorite by them. Damn good sound. The vocals in that and the bass are off the charts!
Gene Simmons used to have a reality show and on that show, I learned something I never knew before. KISS is Paul Stanley's band. Paul Stanley calls the shots. I never knew that. I always thought Gene Simmons was the main guy because he was always the one in front of the camera on t.v. shows and such. Then, one day on his reality show, he admitted that he can't do a thing with KISS unless Paul okays it. That's pretty cool.
Kiss 'Rock & Roll Over' was the first album I ever bought, when the song 'Calling Dr. Love' was on the radio in 1976, I believe - I think I bought it early '77. I was in 2nd grade. Their Dynasty concert was the second concert I ever went to (First was Elvis in '76) - my parents took me to the Kiss concert when I was in 6th grade. Even though they were 'iffy' about it, they walked out of the arena as fans. Still a huge fan to this day. And yeah, my sister is all about Paul Stanley as well.
Their critics have said that they were average musicians and if they didnt have a gimmick (makeup), they would disappear. So, they put this album out (and videos) sans makeup, to prove them wrong. And a couple of the songs(singles) on this album made the Billboard charts.
The guitarist is Mark St. John. He made one album and this video with KISS. Before they could tour,he got a kind of rheumatoid arthritis in his wrist, and, had to drop out. He was replaced by Bruce Kulick. Bruce's brother, Bob Kulick had actually auditioned for KISS,back in the '70s. Ace Frehley got that job.
Since you like this one so much, I think you will like "Tears Are Falling," "I Love It Loud," "Creatures Of The Night," and "Lick It Up." Some of their biggest hits from the 80s.
These guys are always a good time... if you want to hear them a little cleaner i can't recommend the MTV Unplugged show enough. When i want to introduce someone new to KISS or they tell me they don't like them, I almost always throw that on and they are amazed how good of a performance band those guys are live. Saw them on the first "Final Tour" with the original lineup, such a great show.
A long time ago, I saw KISS and a very elderly Bob Hope perform on the same stage, together! It was a Rock radio station's Christmas show done live, and a special moment. KISS was thrilled to see Bob Hope. Bob, of course, bad seen it all, so nothing much shocked him.
Just a great song. I like them better without their makeup. Kiss can rock no doubt. Loved your reaction. Buckets of Maple Syrup love from Canada ❤️❤️ 🇨🇦 🇨🇦
Kiss dropped the make-up through the 80s and early 90s, then went back to it later for nostalgia and fun. My favorite Kiss songs include this one, but also "I Just Wanna," "Psycho Circus," "Unholy," "I Love It Loud," and "God of Thunder."
I remember the MTV interview when they did their reveal with no make-up. Something we never thought we'd see! Paul, Gene, Peter, and Ace all did their own solo albums. You should branch off into some of those tunes. RIP, Eric Carr (their drummer during this time).
Ace had the only really good solo album. I don't think the other three took it very seriously. Hell, Gene did a cover of "When You Wish Upon A Star" on his solo album. I mean, they are interesting to listen to but only Ace's has some real good music on it.
@@garykidson4489 It was September 18, 1983 and was done in-studio with one of the original VJs, JJ Jackson. You can find it here on UA-cam. Type in "kiss no makeup mtv"
@@bamachine Personally, I liked Paul's and Gene's the best. The When You Wish Upon A Star was definitely strange, but I enjoyed the rest of the album. I have all four on CD.
I bought this album (Animalize) when it came out and I was in my first apartment away from home with a couple of friends, in the ’80s. They “unmasked” in the 1980s, but original members Ace Freyley and Peter Chris had already been replaced at this point. This was definitely a jam , though!
Awwww! I'd forgotten just how cute Paul Stanley was back in that early makeup-less era... and how oddly hot Gene was (plus he looked he was having a right ole hoot in this video - fun to see as he normally doesn't show that side of his personality).
The best KISS album (in my opinion) is KISS: Alive. Its also the first album i ever bought. Start on side one, track one (which is the song "Deuce") and just let it play. Loud. It captures them at their finest. Just killer songs. Great guitar riffs, vocals, etc...you get the idea. Amber: there's a long drum solo during the song "100,000 Years" which you would really dig. A phenomenal live album from beginning to end!
Yeah! This is one of their best songs Imo! But they just rock hard 🤘 what a great band to investigate, have fun with these guys 😍 love you guys! ❤️❤️🇨🇦
KISS is so interesting to me…..a recurring nightmare I had as a child about fully KISS make up wearing Gene Simmons chasing me through my elementary school gave me an irrational fear of tall men that lasts to this day. The era of no makeup allowed me to enjoy KISS fully, for the first time ever. Paul Stanley was always a heartthrob, and once the makeup (and mostly the platform boots) was off, I was able to appreciate Gene Simmons, too❤❤❤
Hey Jordan and Amber, this song was from "Animalize", the 2nd album that Kiss released after taking off the makeup The first album they did after they'd decided to go without the makeup was "Lick It Up", which should be the next song that you should react to
Well, you made ME smile! Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU for reacting to my 2nd all-time fave rock band. I've been to one of their lives shows on every tour they've had since the '70's that I could possibly get to, including their current "End of the World" tour. Trust me, I've suffered for my love of this band, especially at the "general admission" shows where you have to run & fight to make it to the stage. But they're worth EVERY bruise, scrape, cut, & cracked bone. LOVE me some KISS, & I LOVE that you do, too! Awesome!
This takes me back to all the Kiss concerts I went to & when I took my then 14 year old daughter to see Kiss & Motley Crue. She's 23 now and remembers it well. So much fun & excitement. Be well.
KISS is a band that really should be reacted to live, don't care if people think you should always hear album version first. Their live is so much better sounding... God of Thunder with the intro is always amazing too.
Kiss had a few albums without their makeup in the 80s pretty much as a promotional gimmick because back in the day photographers were always trying to grab "secret" photos of members of Kiss without their makeup. So to celebrate the release of their Lick It Up album they held a press conference where they officially appeared without makeup for the first time. The promotional gimmick worked because the next few albums were among the most successful of their career. Please react to Love Gun or Come On And Love Me, an early Kiss song and a REALLY early Kiss song.
It wasn’t a promotional gimmick, then again you can say the band is a gimmick. Their sales were going down and they decided to take the makeup off, it brought in new fans and new music. 1983-1995 no makeup. 1996 back on.
This was always one of my favs of theirs. It was definitely a banger when it cane out, and in my opinion it still is. Thanks I needed to hear this one today. Such great times.
The unmasked era of KISS during the 80s had some great songs! Heaven's on fire is great, crazy nighs, turn on the night and forever are some of their best songs and all came from the unmasked era during the 80s and early 90's
They had an album Kiss Unmasked which is the eighth studio album, released on May 20, 1980. It was their first not to feature drummer Peter Criss (although largely absent from the preceding Dynasty, Criss performed on that album's "Dirty Livin'"). After this album they stopped wearing makeup on stage for a while.
Strutter, Deuce, Cold Gin, Tears are Falling, God Gave Rock N Roll to You, Hard Luck Woman, Lick It Up, Two Sides of the Coin, Plaster Caster, Shout It Out Loud, Love Gun, Christine Sixteen. So many good songs.
I LOVE this band..Tgey dropped tge makeup in 1983 and spent about 15 years without makeup. They did go back to the makeup 30 years ago and still play even though they are in there 70s
Glad you noticed Gene's executioner's axe bass -- that one's been a fan fave ever since he brought it out into the world. Even during the many years without the demon make-up, that was a huge part of the "dangerous" element that he's always personified onstage.
Saw them front row in 10th grade; their last makeup tour before they dropped the makeup. I recall this song very well. it was like YEAH they still got it.
They took the make-up off in like 83 ...put it back on in 96 with original members ...I was blessed enough to c the show on New Years Eve....awesome show!!!!!!

Yep...this one is a banger....great album from my high school days. A great follow up for this one is "Lick it up"
I'm not ashamed to say that "Lick it Up" is probably my favorite song of all their hits, ha.
Same here!!
All those albums that got slagged by the purists like Creatures/Animalize/Asylum/and LIU were bangers , Even Crazy Nights and Hot in the shade were decent .
@@nancysmith8626 mine too!!!
Yeah Baby, had friends who knew their Sound Man Randy, South Florida, still have the Back Stage Pass! It was awesome 😀
I saw KISS twice as a teen during this era. Top notch entertainers! Big on crowd participation!! They made everyone feel like part of the coolest club on earth! And they had excellent sound engineers. Loud as Hell but crystal clear.
J & Amber, you'll love their "Shout It Out Loud" and "Beth"!!! You won't believe "Beth" is a Kiss song, but it was their highest charting song!
Love the song ‘Beth’
"Beth" is my favorite Kiss song
Beth is good .. it was B side song that actually turned to be one of their best and highest charting song
I think Beth is my all-time favorite Kiss song
I just happened to have seen KISS back in what our kids call "the olden days" with a band I'd never heard of opening. It was RUSH. They became my favourite band that day. But KISS rocked the house with a stage show that was worth the price of admission by itself. That was 1975-76 and the tickets were less than $10.00 (Canadian, but still). For that show we got every penny of our money's worth 🤘😎
You can't go wrong with Kiss! Hundreds of good songs, Lick It Up, Domino, Back In The New York Groove
Seen them live twice. They do put on a great show.
And the pyro... felt the heat during this song from all the way up in the nose bleeds.
❤️👍. Row 4, I think my face was burnt
@@CjJohns1776 🤣
Yeah, I have seen them twice also. Sadly not when I was in high school, back in the 80's but my first time seeing them live was around 2003 with Aerosmith. Their show was still great but it was a little toned down from the shows I have seen on tape. There was some pyro but it was much tamer than what I have seen from earlier shows on video. Their next show I saw, in 2004 with Poison, the pyro was a little bigger but still not what you saw back in the 70's-90's.
Seven albums without makeup from 1983 to 1997, the most my favorite songs from that era.
I went to their concert in 2019, and they rocked me just as hard as they did in 1978!!!
I was so happy when this song came out because for me it proved they didn't need the makeup. KISS always gave their fans their moneys worth!!!!
Paul Stanley has always been my favorite. This was a fun song.
One of my absolute favorite songs by KISS. Never a bad time for this song in my opinion.
"Sure know something" is a Dynasty-era song with a cool video.
1992
You must go into more KISS music and you will see how diverse the band really was. Very talented 👏
Tears are falling Paul cant be equaled
@@roberttaylor6571 it’s a beautiful song no doubt 🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽
Oh yeah! KISS ✌❤🎶 y'all have to do Beth!
Yay! KISS... first concert I ever went to. 8 years old on my dad’s shoulders rocking it!
Great voices, great entertainers… Seen them many times in concert and Paul is a great front man… great banter ! 🤘
Paul always kills that “oooooh” at the start when he does it live, it’s so good
80s Rock was awesome.
This is my jam right here!!! I drive my husband and my daughter crazy because I play it so much. I am so glad that I grew up in the 80s
Gene Simmons didn't like the song "I was made for loving you" but it is actually my favorite by them. Damn good sound. The vocals in that and the bass are off the charts!
I suggested this song a while ago. I KNEW you'd love it!!!!
That's like Bon Jovi. It was always Jon's band and everyone else were employees
You can definitely tell the KISS sound comes from Paul just by listening to the 1978 solo albums.
LMAO that is so untrue, Gene and Paul run it together
His bass in Crazy Nights shoots fire out of it....the video is awesome!!
Kiss has never been given enough credit being a great rock band.
Check out Unholy and Domino next.
Thanks for keeping great music alive!
Absolutely this☝️☝️ ya both should really like I Love It Loud🤟
This is my KISS, I'm 57 I got out of high school in 82, lot of good times seeing kiss 7 times in the 89s, 90, and once in 2001
These guys are always a good time... if you want to hear them a little cleaner i can't recommend the MTV Unplugged show enough.
Eric Carr probably one of the best drummers ever. The man was truly a nice guy to the fans and we just love his drum solos.
Best of the eighties!!! Fun, upbeat, and just rocks!!! They had quite of few, 'no make-up' 80s songs. This is my favorite... Great Reaction!!!
What was the reaction of fans and media to the no make-up look at the time when it was first revealed?
Back in the New York Groove and Beth are great ones also
yes, New York Groove! from Ace Frehley, his 1978 solo album.
LIVE KISS is the best KISS \m/
Pp
Paul Stanley was always a heartthrob, and once the makeup (and mostly the platform boots) was off, I was able to appreciate Gene Simmons, too❤❤❤
KISS - Beth will blow your mind. You won't even believe it is them. Love your channel!
For a great example of how good Paul’s voice is yall need to check out “I Still Love You” from UnPlugged.
You could play the entire KISS-ology box set and never be bored. One great unmasked KISS song is the power ballad "Forever."
J and Amber: if you want to get away from the sexual innuendo of this song and get straight to the point, try KISS’ “Uh! All Night”.
Also: “Let’s Put the X in Sex”
More kiss! Raise your glasses ,tears are fallen, hide your heart ,
Hey Jordan and Amber, this song was from "Animalize", the 2nd album that Kiss released after taking off the makeup
The first album they did after they'd decided to go without the makeup was "Lick It Up", which should be the next song that you should react to
Great reaction. This is my all time favorite song so I appreciate your love for this track
Beth is a ballad they did. Beautiful! I remember when I was a freshman in high school and it seemed every school choir performed that song.
Awesome!
I've seen them 3 times. 1980, 1983 & 1988 Bloody great stage presence.
This takes me back to all the Kiss concerts I went to & when I took my then 14 year old daughter to see Kiss & Motley Crue. She's 23 now and remembers it well. So much fun & excitement. Be well.
If you like Gene Simmons that much you should check out their song God of Thunder
KISS is a band that really should be reacted to live, don't care if people think you should always hear album version first. Their live is so much better sounding... God of Thunder with the intro is always amazing too.
My God I remember when that came out. I had hair. No wrinkles and cartilage in my knees. And girls really loved it
Kiss had a few albums without their makeup in the 80s pretty much as a promotional gimmick because back in the day photographers were always trying to grab "secret" photos of members of Kiss without their makeup.
WMMS 101 FM Hey John K.
"God Gave Rock and Roll To You" is another great song featured in the 2nd Bill and Ted movie. Would be a good one for the next reaction
Written and 1st done by Russ Ballard singer for band Argent! KISS rocks it!
Black diamond is the one to watch when they did a special on TV back in 73 or 74. It was killer. Peter rocked it!
Not politically correct these days but Christine Sixteen is a great one.
EVH wrote the solo that Ace plays on that song
The unmasked era of KISS during the 80s had some great songs! Heaven's on fire is great, crazy nighs, turn on the night and forever are some of their best songs and all came from the unmasked era during the 80s and early 90's
You guys need to check out the Damn Yankees
KISS is my favorite band full stop. I have been a fan since I was a kid. I am so glad to see you guys experience this great band.
I love the way Paul Stanley performs and dances around on stage. It just adds that extra energy to the song
Makeup-less Kiss was incredible ! All Hells Breaking Loose, A Million to One, Forever, and Tears Are Falling.....you just have to knock these out !
This is the first KISS song I ever heard. I was hooked
I LOVE this band..Tgey dropped tge makeup in 1983 and spent about 15 years without makeup. They did go back to the makeup 30 years ago and still play even though they are in there 70s
You guys are great. I'm obviously older than the two of you, but this song right here is the song where I became a KISS fan forever.
Glad you noticed Gene's executioner's axe bass -- that one's been a fan fave ever since he brought it out into the world. Even during the many years without the demon make-up, that was a huge part of the "dangerous" element that he's always personified onstage.
I’ve seen them live so many times, I’ve lost count!! Their live performances are phenomenal
KISS MTV unplugged “I still love you”. AMAZING
When they first came out "un-covered" it totally blew everyone's minds!
You have a Limited number of KISS songs to choose from... Only a Catalog from FIFTY YEARS of Music! PLUS their Solo Albums!
If You Love Gene's Bass (and Singing), Try an oldie but goody, "DOMINO"!!!!!!!!
?? how did it blow everyones mind?
@@markbailey3225 Because the Public didn't know what these guys looked like, and then BAM! they became "People"... It's like the Lone Ranger removing his mask and people seeing a person under the "Legend"... We got to see the Men Behind the Curtain.
So, you love a hard hitting drumming, this era is for you. Eric Carr from 1982 (he was in makeup as the fox) until he died the exact same day as Freddy mercury from heart cancer. He is my favorite drummer ever and he would have turned 72 this week. Crazy nights is my absolute happy song and I never listen just once. It’s one repeat. “You are my people, this is my crowd. This is my music and we love it loud “
