It wasn't shot at their planet, it was test fired from their planet and misfired. It exceeded expectations of the designers. Much like the people that worried that the first test detonation of the atomic bomb could cause the earth's atmosphere, to have carried on the fusion/fission process once started by the test. Perhaps it was fired against a Vandual fleet, destroying most of it as well, but they were able to recover parts of the weapon in the aftermath which accounts for the king ships and their weapons.

11:30 or thereabouts raises an interesting question of whether it was a test-firing of such a weapon, by the Hadesians, which originally destroyed the planet in their own system. It's not my favourite theory, though.
As long as we're theorycrafting and engaging in wild speculation ... If this is true, my guess is that the weapon will be used to break the Vanduul in episode two of S42 ... then turned on the independent worlds years later in episode three to quell the "pirate" threat causing Terra and other worlds to break from the UEE along with other planets, at which point we as the player have to destroy the Retribution. Also, someone from the Earth side of the conflict will use the phrase "Peace in our time" during Ep 3.
The only thing Elite Dangerous ever really has, that nothing else has, is massive mystery. Raxxla... the dark wheel... guardian AI... Gan Romero... all these things inspire people to explore and research. I can't wait to see SC with enough space to have such mysteries to inspire.
I've always felt like I was one of the few people who noted that scaffold system in the middle of the Retribution. Looked like some kind of axial railgun, far larger than the 6 shipbuster turrets dotted around the dreadnought. If that scaffold rig is the planet killer, then I just got more excited
What we know for sure from CIG is that the UEES Retribution is under construction during the beginning of Episode 1. You apparently see it from afar near the beginning of the game. The full outside of the model has to be finished for the end of Episode 1, and it will appear near the end, exterior only. It will be featured quite extensively for Episode 2: Behind Enemy Lines. They will have to finish key portions of the interior needed for scenes that take place inside of it. It was said they were unsure if the full interior would be finished, or not. They were also not sure if the full interior would ever be finished, which has lead to a lot of people speculating that it probably gets destroyed.

I'm really curious where they go with the Retribution as a plot device. My guess is Bishop's using it for his own selfish reasons because he's a warmonger par excellence, wreaking havoc in Vanduul space with it and unifiying all Vanduul clans against humanity.
I have a feeling the Retribution isn't going to last very long, it'll likely help the UEE win the Vanduul war but will probably have to sacrifice the ship in order to win, as something with that much power in my opinion has no place in a post-Messer UEE and if lasts longer than the Vanduul war many will wonder why the UEE is toting around a literal planet killer ship.
It's human nature to seek power for power's sake there is no way the Retribution will be decommissioned it is THE flagship of the UEE navy there is no way the brass is going to let go of it plus having weapon capable of destroying planets is a good deterrent against foreign threats it's up to use to make sure it never gets used unjustly.
So, it appears to be Star Citizen's version of the Wing Commander 3's Behemoth planet killer, and I'd not be surprised to see it meet a very similar fate.
Thank you Paul for a very enjoyable romp through SC Lore. You certainly have a very engaging way of getting and holding peeps attention!! And long may you continue to do so!!
Well put together! I wonder how fast one of these travels and what the range is. Gameplay wise it would be interesting to see a future PU-wide event where one side escorts one of these heading towards a planet. And if the planetary defence fails then the once lush green planet turns into a mostly charred desert world.
All it takes is for the Vanduul to create a trap for the Retribution, destroy it, and then start a massive offensive by uniting all the vanduul-clans against the humanity , then it's game over.
I wonder if deeper excavation will find the odd Vanduul remains and artefacts when investigating Hadesian archaeology? I think a Vanduul super fleet hit Hades, the Vanduul got hit by a bug for which they had impaired immunity, deployed weaponised invasive species as remote cleanup but not before someone would have broken quarantine and devastated a more unified version of Vanduul civilisation than we see in the 30th century. This would explain why the surviving Vanduul operate as independent operations groups. Notice how nothing goes home straight away and there is great mystery about non-martial Vanduul culture because they keep their core culture isolated?
