Squiers are SOO underrated it's sickening. Fender is great for many reasons, but a well set up Squier can be had for far less coin. As you demonstrate in your playing, Squier guitars are capable of amazing performance.
Squier CV are only good. Affinity is dog scrap. Crap tuners, crap neck wood, crap pickups, trashy electronics.

Mike Rutherford was playing an Affinity during a recent tour. Squier is definitely producing some great entry-level guitars that are worthy of professional play.
I have a 2010 CV 50s MIC and a 2020 Bullet. Both are excellent and needed nothing but a slight action tune when I got them. The necks, fretwork, and overall quality of both is superb. Now, I got the bullet exclusively as a cheap platform for modding and it is now even better, subjective to my personal taste. Although now I have quite a bit more money into it.

My Squire CV Jazzmaster became my main instrument about 2 hours after setting it up. Holy cow what a value.
Same here. It is the guitar that got me back into single coil pickups. After all the hype I heard about Mastery bridges I finally took the plunge and ordered one. They aren't necessary but I'd be lying if I said I didn't want to put a Mastery bridge on every offset I own. Also, I swapped the pickups for some Croatian made brand called Q. I also swapped the tremolo with the AVRI. I recommend anyone wanting to dip their toes in the offset world to look into the Squier Classic Vibe series or the J Mascis model. You really can't go wrong - proper set up is required, but same could be said for a thousand dollar Fender these days.
Agreed… my Squier Duosonic, Cyclone, Jaguar, P Bass, Bass VI, and Tele… all make me say, “moo”… I have a MIM Fender Tele and MIJ Fender Strat… they are all excellent… I love the Squiers as much is the Fenders… And because they cost so much less, I was able purchase more, to have a bigger variety of fun Guitars, with different feels and tones

@@BobPerrone I saw that jazz master 12 and I wanted it but it was kind of expensive… and I hate the hickey stuck headstock! I broke my budget on the Bass VI… paid extra to find a rare used Olympic white one. I bought a Harley Benton “Chickenbacker” 12 and it’s pretty cool … I love the body shape… but I’m sure it’s never as good as your Squier!
@StarchieSkizzyx I gave up on getting the white bass vi, that color is asking high prices. I have the sunburst. Both my 12 and 6 string jazzmasters in Olympic white, just they look great in that color. The 12 was 499, have they gone up price?
Got mine about 10 years ago, put on locking tuners, a roller bridge, and AVR vibtrato (mostly for the lock button). It's fantastic, and even though it doesn’t get as much love as my other guitars, it amazes me everytime I pick it up. Simply a great instrument.
I got my J Mascis Squire Jazzmaster a few years ago.5? It still blows my mind how great it is. One of the best guitars I have played in the past 50 years. I love it's tone more than my trusty 56 Esquire that I have had since 1971. Such a classic guitar. I also own a Squire Stratocaster that I bought in 1987. Still my favorite Strat.
I recently purchased a Squier 40th Anniversary Tele for a bargain deal on Amazon and I couldn’t believe how STUNNING and easy the play the guitar is!! The neck came with rolled fretboard edges, a satin finish on the neck and body, black binding around the contour of the body, anodized pickguard… simply stunning for a $300 purchase. Right now I’m searching for another 40th anniversary but this time I want a Strat. If you haven’t, please give them a try - you will be surprised by the quality.
Same expect I got the 40th anniversary jazzmaster, got it at a great price off someone basically brand new. He had it set up to his liking but I'd prefer heavier gauge strings and higher action to combat the fret buzz and twang from the lower gauge strings.
I got the 40th Anniversary Strat and it's become my go-to guitar. There's no way to improve the neck - shape, size, inlays, and fretwork are perfect and it's the most playable instrument I've ever tried.
We love our Squier JMascis Jazzmaster! Killer tone. Wonderful to play. Unbelievable value.

I got mine from 2017 used,killer sound.I sold my USA and Japan made ones.
I don't know about the Squire, but Chris Buck, definitely a Future Classic.

My God, but this man can play!
Squier has had my heart for a while now. Some of their runs have been absolute sleepers and true gems of the budget guitar world. Anything made from Japan, the Protone, the MIC classic vibe, the current 40th anniversary vintage editions, all going to be guitars people will love for years and years to come.
To add to this- the paranormal jazzcasters have better fretwork than some MIA fenders!
The pro-tone, have not thought of those in years. Best squier I've ever played. As good as the American standard if u have electronic upgrades.
I agree completely on the quality of the MIC CV. I have a 2010 LPB CV50 that is brilliant. @goth_ihop I have never laid eyes on a Paranormal in person but I just found a killer, fully figured Paranormal Strat neck on Reverb so I ordered it to swap onto my Bullet, a guitar I got exclusively for modding. I'm a sucker for a beautiful piece of well figured maple.

I've been enjoying this guitar since 2020. I've changed the pick-ups with Lambertones Ristrettos and the tremolo with an AVRI and now it's PERFECT! 😍 I still can't believe how well this guitar is made and how well it stays in tune.
W0W! My J Mascis Squier Jazzmaster became my main Axe, shortly after watching this episode!! Course all Ii need to do now is buy one!? Ha! I must say the guitar sure sounds a bit different in Mr Bucks hands, then in Mr Mascis hands!
Chris, because of you I did buy a Squire Classic-Vibe Jazz Master and I must say I am so impressed with the quality of the guitar. I have American and Mexican Fenders in my arsenal, and I be honest the Squire arrived in the best shape out of all of them. Prefect fit and finish and almost set-up prefect. I just got a Tele Baritone Deluxe and again I was floored with the quality! I agree with you that a good guitar is a good guitar, and it doesn't really matter what name is on the headstock. I see a Chris Buck signature Squire in your future!

I got a squier and did some neck polish this and that and I cannot believe how awesome the Indonesian factory does things nowadays , I think every music brand just charges 70% of the price with the excuse of the brand name itself , Squiers are great for the money and people complain that they don't come out of the box with a great setup.... well thats where it is the job of the player to learn some stuff about how guitars function and do a self setup and learn in the process ! I cant tell u how many guitarists I know of who get their things setup by luthiers and only know how to tune .
Exactly. I spent around 35 bucks on Amazon and ordered every single thing needed for a full on setup. The whole deal, slotted straight edge, a level and crown kit, 600 grit wet dry sandpaper, a known straight surface, and a few other things. The videos on yt showing how to use them are free. I've setup at least 12 guitars and saved probably close to a grand and made a few bucks on the side. Well worth the money and time.

all squier jazzmasters are good through good amps that often cost a lot more than the guitar itself, so you'll have to make a choice whether that's where you want to go. In terms of build, it's absolutely amazing. it takes a couple of days to get used to the controls, but after that you can have to much fun. THe frets are very nice, an the single coils are nice a brad in range

Love the thought ant time you put into this. the JMJM is absolutely a phenomenal instrument but as you say the 40th Anniversary (and its cousin the CV) absolutely hold their own. The way I think of it is that the J Mascis has some of the most popular mods that a certain type of player really looks for: satin neck (which the 40th also has), hotter pickups, and a more stable (though less Jazzmastery) trem. I think it comes down to what are you wanting out of your JM - Squier has 2 really excellent offerings the CV/40th for the more traditional and the JM for the more aggressive/modern take.

As interesting videos of high end and vintage guitars are most viewers can relate more to discussions about 'budget' models. Yes, there are many reviews on youtube but these are usuelly by guitar outlets pushing their stock. ThanksChris.
I've had one for a few years and I love it.
My Classic Vibes are each such a joy to play! I am 58 yrs old and lived through the first wave of bad guitars (all brands) and what players have to choose from today is wonderful and generally need nothing more than a minor setup (if that) and your personal favorite set/gauge of strings.

I have two Classic Vibes and they're awesome. They play great out of the box, don't need a ton of setup work, and are very upgradable if you want. They're just fine if you're not into upgrading too!
Yes - they are that good. It's the neck. I've updated to the American tremolo and Staytrem bridge....as well as Duncan Antiquity 2 pickups for a more vintage sound.

The only experience I have with a Squire is the one I just bought. A paranormal strat -o-sonic. I think it's great. Not your normal strat. Has a pair of P90s, and a neck scale like a Gibson. Plays great. Looks stunning!
My favourite album is entirely recorded with this guitar!! It's Turnover - Peripheral Vision and the singer's guitar is this very axe!! It ALREADY IS a classic in the indie rock sphere! Soooo glad it gets the recognition it deserves!

That picture of the pickups is really interesting. Let me try to explain. Most single coil pickups in USA models, including Jazzmaster pickups, have alnico magnets as the pole peaces them self. This gives them their own character we all know and love. That means there are no screws as pole peaces. Now, there are also cheap ceramic pickups used by some Fenders and most cheap Squier guitars that have the ceramic bar under the coil, and pole peaces are steel slugs. This one sounds very different. Even some Japanese and Mexican Fenders use to have them. Those are somehow loved by people who play high gain with Fender guitars. For anything else, they are trash, in my opinion, that is.
Now, the difference between the Stratocaster and Jazzmaster pickup is in the depth and width of the coil mostly. Jazzmaster pickup coil is shallower and wider. This apparently makes them see a bit wider part of the string, and that should generate more signal and sound bit warmer in theory. Like reason why the single coil pickups sound more precise and have more details on the clean than humbuckers is often explained with the same phenomenon. Humbuckers pick up a wider part of the string, and some frequencies dampen each other. I believe that's a major thing, but there are a few more things involved as usually is in such complex things.
Jazzmaster pickups have distinctive sound in Jazzmaster guitars, and that's a fact.
Now Jason Lollard makes Jazzmaster P90 versions, and this picture looks like that a lot. Being Squier I am aware that it's an impossible thing. But coild be some copycat of it. Like the rumor that UK company Toneruder has made even cheaper version of their, great fir the money, Strat and Tele pickups for the Classic Vibe guitars at some moment.
Anyhow, P90 has screws for pole peaces, and those screw true the steel rail/spacer under the coil and into the back plate. There are two alnico bar magnets on sides of that metal rail/spacer. So between the coil and the back plate. This is unique construction and is not even shared with the staple pickups that look similar from the top side.
Anyhow, I wonder if the construction the same in these pickups and whether they are using ceramic magnets to cut costs.
BTW, non related exactly, but staple pickup have alnico pole peaces in the voice coil and sound different than P90 pickups. Original Gibson staple pickup are to big. Require huge routing hole. Though Stu from Sunbear pickups makes an awesome version of his own. Those sound awesome. Would be a great option for at least neck pickup on the Revstar. Neck staple pickup would give it cleaner detailed, more Fender like clean sounds. P90 in bridge would keep more similar to humbuckers tone character of P90's.

I have a Squier Vintage Modified JM, the very first series of squier JM with the vintage bridge, I switched to a Staytrem and I changed the pickups with a uk Mojo pickup set, it sings beautifully, plays great, it's one of my favorite guitar

@ChrisBuckGuitar Based on this video I went and purchased the J Mascis Squier Jazzmaster yesterday after playing it WOW!. I was lucky the closest Guitar Center to me had one in stock. No one has these in stock right now in the states, I couldn't believe I found one in the area. I also played about 20 Squier guitars yesterday including the 40th anniversary Jazzy. None of them had fretwork even close to what the J Mascis Jazzmaster has. The first thing I thought to myself was "why can't all Squires be like this?"
I bought a brand new Mexico player telecaster just about six weeks ago and the fretwork was nowhere near what the J Mascis signature has. It had a great intonation out of the box and only the 15th fret was a little high. I crowned that fret, and now this guitar is like do I dare say, the US made jazz master with much hotter pick ups lol. The folks that fender took a lot of time to do fret work on these, and quite frankly, I can't keep my hands off of the guitar. Sounds great, and it plays as good as any fender USA made guitar that I own. I am thrilled but at the same time absolutely blown away. I definitely purchased something very special. Thanks very much Chris for bringing this up.

I picked up mine new in about 2011 -- and my understanding for years has been that these do have P90 style pickups. I purchased it initially for touring but it instantly became my co-favorite guitar along with my 70's Tele partscaster. I love this instrument!

I have Squire paranormal I bought during lockdown. All you need to do is change the pickups, pots, input jack, bridge, nut, tuners, selector switch and boom. A killer guitar 🫤

I upgraded my CV Jazzmaster with Toltec vintage wound pickups. - phenomenal pickups. I changed the wiring and put a staytrem bridge and collet in there. This thing plays and sounds amazing!
The older ones had a Rosewood Fretboard. Thus command a higher price.

Agree, three months ago Pro Audio in the states ran a heavy discount on the entire 40th anniversary line. Picked a beauty of a Jazzmaster. I've owned all the major guitar brands over the decades of playing and the neck on this guitar is outstanding. It'll be a guitar that I wear the frets off, it's that good. Lastly, one thing that wasn't pointed out, these guitars are NOT covered in heavy poly, which has been a common issue with Squiers. Great guitar for the $$ and they routinely go on sale. Cheers!!
My 2015 J Mascis Jazzmaster has been my main (and sometimes only) guitar since I bought it new. I've played punk, ska, classic rock, and ambient soundscape styles on it and it never disappoints. It's probably the most comfortable and playable guitar I've ever owned.

Squier is just amazing value for money, I'd say. Old Squiers are lovely, and the last few years they've released some ridiculously good instruments - I have a 70s style Jazzbass that's just incredible, and I've played a few CV Teles and Strats as well. Once they're set-up properly I'll pick these over any Fender.
The Squier Jazzmaster 40th anniversaries I've tried, were also top notch and sounded as good as they looked..

These guitars are a steal. For anyone interested, Black Bobbin in Chicago offers a few nice upgrade options - including custom Lollar pickups and high-quality pots. Also, guitarist Avi Bortnick (from Scofield's Überjam band) has put a couple of these J Mascis necks onto Strat bodies because he likes the neck shape/feel so much.

A few years ago i decided i finally needed a decent Strat. I happened to order a Squier Protone and a Fender Am. Standard, both used, one a little more vintage than the other, off ebay just for the looks and intended to return the 2nd best sounding instrument. Since then i'm a proud owner of a Squier Protone and i love it!

Btw that trem issue might come from the bridge actually. Saddles can do that on the tunomatic bridge whe in use with vibrola or Bigsby. Maybe quick polish of the saddles would help a little. This bridge, those pickups and rosewood/Indian laurel do give unique characters to this guitar.
I have a Squier 40th anniversary Strat and a Squier Paranormal Stratosonic, that are so good, I am selling my Clapton Artist Strat. Squier is making some REALLY good stuff now!

Now, regarding about the "right hands", watching that pedal show (Amazing Chord-Melody Guitar Playing & Tone With Tim Lerch), I wrote and understood this about your special and pleasant playing style: "For a younger approach, on the use of grace notes harmonizing, the chords un-fixed approach and arpeggios, as well as the tone in the right hand and even the guitar's neck and body various anchor points, force applied and wiggle, as part of the intentional sound outcome, Chris Buck, as my personal opinion, is the one applying it all, in an ubiquitous synergy, through his playing". The Squier J Mascis Jazzmaster neck is modeled after the Fender Rory Gallagher Stratocaster.

40th anniversary jazz master is my primary guitar now. Just feels nicer than the telescope, lip jrs, and others I have in my collection
I have the anniversary one - beautiful guitar, swapped the pickups for some Fender Vintage`65 JM pickups and thats about it. Very well crafted and beautiful sounding; just a guitar i enjoy literally every time i pick it up.

the indian laurel problem, more than the color, is how dry it is. Not a good feeling. It was the case with mine, and several youtubers have reported the same. You have to soak it in lemon oil. You will need several iterations to achieve the right result. When you do, you’ll be pleasantly surprised to see how much it has darkened. Round the edges and matte the neck and it plays fantastic

A really interesting video Chris . When you said “ guitar with someone’s name in it “ reminded me of a guitar I’d fancied but the cons outweighed the pros . A Fender Sergio Vallin had caught my eye as a hybrid Strat /Jazzmaster but the controls were even crazier than the Jazzmaster ones .What looks like a tone and volume control is yep a volume but the other one was a selecter switch which was clunky and defaualted to the bridge humbucker . It had a Jazzmaster style trem too which I’m not used too . Pickups great , coil tap
on the humbucker but the one I tried had really rough frets . To tie in with your video these now seem to fetch good money £500 on release but unlike other MIM guitars have boomed in price , probably due to rarity but for playability?? That said if one crossed my path ….
I picked up a Squier J Mascis model several years ago for around $390. Couldn't believe how great it played and sounded for the money. I've thought about selling it several times but have hung on to it. Glad I did.
