Max Baer -vs- Tony Galento | All Rounds w/Postfight (16mm Transfer)

- The Max Baer vs Tony Galento fight film is a classic document of pre-war Sports Americana. In 1940, Max Baer and Tony Galento, the two most colorful boxers of their day, met for a title elimination showdown in Jersey City. It was a titanic slugfest. The fight began even before the opening bell as Galento threatened Baer during the referee's instructions. The two went right to work in the first round, with Galento on the attack. By round 3 however, Baer was taking control, fighting in flurries, in between clowning and taunting the relentless Galento. After 7 rounds of bruising action, Galento collapses in his corner and cannot answer the bell for the 8th. It was Baer's last victory.
The Movie
The film is noteworthy for several reasons. The fight was among the best filmed bouts of the day. It was also among the first fight films produced as the interstate traffic of boxing films was lifted. For the first time since 1910, boxing films could be distributed across state lines and shown across the country. As a result, fight films became feature productions in theatres, rather than simply newsreels. In the decade prior to the television boom, movie audiences were treated to complete fight pictures only days after the event.
The Film
This footage in this video is taken from three sources and shows all rounds of the fight. The opening potion is from a VHS copy that suffers from generation loss. Despite the lack of quality, I thought it was important to show the ring intros and referee's instructions, as it includes Galento's trash talk and threat to get "twice as rough" as Baer, as if Tony ever needed an excuse. The remaining (and superior) source footage begins after the opening bell, and is taken from an extended 16mm print, with Round 3 taken from the Castle Films highlight. The final minute includes the famous "after-battle" interview with Max Baer, Lou Costello and Joe Louis.

I love the post fight "after-battle" interview with Max Baer, Lou Costello and Joe Louis. LOVE IT!
Yeah, that was really something. Great boxing history.
Like the Jewish carlitos way
LOU COSTELLO FROM PATERSON , NEW JERSEY !
It appears as though Baer and Louis were good friends and respected each other, even though Louis had defeated him in 1935
All Max Baer needed was a solid jab to win. Galento had NO DEFENSE. Great footage. The end was awesome.
Do not underestimate that 'little fat man' as so many of you called him. At the time he had one of the best left hooks in the boxing business and a chin to back it up. Sure he was not a styled boxer but he put a many great boxers on their ass none the less.....including Joe Louis.
and he knocked Jackie Gleason out
Ed....Yes, that is a great story of how Gleason met Two Ton Tony. lol
@@tattoobillyband7725 Sucker punches will do that.
If he were more scientific and less reckless he would of faired better. He was a FAST short fat man.
Used the head-butt quite a bit!
Max Baer- "He'll have a hard time eating spaghetti now" 😂Savage "reflection of his own self" lls that post fight interview was the best.
Baer was an intelligent, insightful man, that was a good line
He always said borderline racist shit about his opponents. He said stuff like that after he got KOd by Joe Louis. That stuff wouldn’t fly today
@@Ditka-89you can’t judge someone on the so called rules of society from time periods
Max and Joe at the end - such lovable fellows, great friends too.
Yeah, that was the best part of the video. A lot of genuine warmth there.
Robert Hockett Yes, I too was really impressed with the two heavyweight legends displaying great love and respect for each other. Max and Joe, a couple of straight shooters. Blesstheir memories.
It’s a shame Max Baer is badly mischaracterized in “Cinderella Man.” He was such a good-natured goofball, really not cut out, disposition-wise, to be a fighter. He just liked clowning around, and playing to a crowd, and just happened to inherit a big frame, a naturally cut muscular physique, a strong right hand (that he occasionally landed), and a relatively tough jaw. He went a long way without trying.
You are right, the movie did Max Baer a great injustice.
@@73TridentYou guys are absolutely correct. Max Baer by all accounts was very personable and friendly man, and the way in which he was portrayed in the "Cinderella Man," was terribly inaccurate, unfair and a disgrace.
I agree..it annoyed me intensely to see him portrayed as such an arrogant, mean spirited bully...in reality he was the opposite. Everybody loved the performing Baer..
Galento fought several brawls with Arturo Godoy. Godoy is quoted as saying: "I like fighting Galento. He fights same as me: Dirty as Hell"
It's hard to think of a character in boxing more dignified and mild-mannered than Joe Louis.
Tony Galento. Lol....
The Brown Bomber was a very cool and calm cat. Especially when he pounced.
JOE LOUIS was my favorite boxer of all time. LOU COSTELLO was half of my favorite comedy team of all time. great to see both of them in one video!
I love the post-fight interview by Lou Costello :) Lou was a boxer himself at one time
Yes
Jackie Gleason once met a heckler out in the parking lot and got knocked out for his trouble. The heckler was Tony Galento.
Wow. The Great One musta packed quite a wallop.
My mistake. The other way around.

@@demef758 thanks for this, what a legendary interview.
Galento looks like the kind of guy a loan shark hires to collect debts.
Yep, Tony was a bad dude. Wouldn't want to mess w/him on the street.
he was a collector
Guy's gotta make a living!
Lol pretty sure he was.....Marciano was a loan shark after his retired days also
@@GioOmerta damn Marciano?? Didnt know that
Great to see the post fight interview.
Lou must have been a real sports fan, he did quite a good post game interview!
tacomadc Lou was actually a pretty good boxer himself before comedy came-a-calling.
Max Baer son was Max Baer Jr: who was the character Jethro on The Beverly Hillbillies TV show!
Max Baer Jr. was also very upset with Ron Howard for the way he portrayed his father in the movie Cinderella Man!
his brother buddy played the big fella in quo vadis that kills the bull with his bear hands too
His brother Buddy Baer was also a good boxer and acted in some movies ("Giant from the Unknown" is one, and I think it's available on UA-cam).
Tony Galento was the Butter Bean of the 1930's Heavyweight Boxing!
Now that would be a fun fight but my money would be on Eric
Max Baer said Two Ton Tony would stop bathing a week before a fight, and smell like bad booze and rotting tuna fish, which he did as part of his strategy.
😄😄
That's...so not right...😆😆
If that's True,
It's Amazing he Didn't Knock out more opponents. lol 😆
@@brianpress1392 He knocked out a lot of people, particularly outside nightclubs. Milton Berle recounts to Rocky Marciano how it happened to him between shows in New York. That interview is on UA-cam somewhere.
Tony gallento & Patsy Quinn. Were good friends. Patsy Quinn.was my dad.welterweight champ of Ireland..
Fair play ta ya paddy
yeah I heard galento bullied him alot! Willie marini
Max Baer seemed like a really cool dude. I liked how friendly he was with Joe Louis after the fight, you didn't see that very often between white men and black men during that time. I wish they had fought each other again, I think that would have been a good fight.
It wasn't Max Baer's final victory of his career because he stopped Pat Comiskey in 1 round 2 months after the Galento fight and then lost the rematch to Lou Nova before Baer retired from the ring.
Wow Galento was really dirty !!... Low blows, elbows, butting, raking the face with the gloves, hitting and holding.... Couldn't fight any other way. A real tough guy.
Use what you've got , nothings fair in life. Tony was indeed one of the toughest!.
The Great Joe Louis,
Max Baer, And My Personal Favorite of them All,
Lou Costello.
R.I.P. 🙏🏆🌹
Wouldn’t wanna meet Tony in a ally or ANYWHERE for that matter👊👊👊👊👊
Max was a great guy. Pity he was unnecessarily portrayed as a nasty killer in "Cinderella Man". Max wasn't half the villain as was the Great Depression.
Imagine such camaraderie between fighters today like you see between Baer and Louis. Hard to believe. Yes, there was a color barrier back then, but clearly Baer was not blinded by it.
Really liked your observation on Bear/Louis. Baer seemed to have a ton of respect for Joe. And I have a ton of respect and admiration for both of these great AMERICANS. And as a Jew, I thank you Max for wearing the Star of David.
baer was jew
Two-Ton Tony despised everyone equally, regardless of race creed or color.
easily 2 of my favorite fighters of the era. how the heck did it take me this long to find this!
True story -- was with Chuck Wepner in the late 1970's and we were talking about low blows. He told me the trick was to hit UNDER the Cup, the place where the jock comes to point. I asked him who told him that --he said Tony Galento! Who else?
+James Monteverde
That's hilarious, because a coupe years ago I was reading an interview with some old timer (I forget who) who said one of the tricks he learned from Galento was "How ta git 'im inna sistas, when da ref ain't lookin'".
haha
how did you know chuck wepner? he sued stallone for stealing his life story to make Rocky--they settled out of court, but Stallone never publicly admited it
James Monteverde Damn !
Wepner wasn't considered a top shelf fighter by most but he was in general a tough SOB. Before boxing, Wepner performed at carnivals,..............he fought bears in a ring. I'm talking about real 400 lb. bears, though they were declawed. Chuck said once a bear picked him up and hurled him out of the ring and onto a concrete slab.
Wepner said that in all of his fights, he was the bully, except against one particular guy. That guy was 38 year old Sonny Liston. Wepner went into the late rounds with Liston but he needed over 100 stitches after the fight and suffered 2 or 3 broken bones in his face. He said every time Liston landed a punch he broke something.
A young George Foreman sparred with Liston when George was 19 or 20. He said that Liston is the only man that ever stood toe to toe slugging with him that he couldn't back up. I believe that if not for the mob forcing him to take 2 dives against Ali in their fights, that Liston would have gone down as the best HW of all times. He finished at 50-2 if the fixed fights are discarded.
Henry Cooper, the Brit fighter with a good left hook who nearly KO'd Ali said that he wouldn't get into the ring with Liston. Cooper was a blood and guts tough guy that was undersized as a 180 lb. heavyweight but who held his own against everyone he fought basically. A tough guy like Cooper admitting publicly he wouldn't risk fighting Liston gives an insight into just how fearsome Sonny Liston was.
His career was all but ruined when forced to dive in both Ali fights, but he did enough damage during his career to ensure that he would be ranked high as an all-time great despite the 'beating' his career took because of those fights. Liston was a man that was disrespected, scorned and ridiculed throughout his life by nearly everyone, including his own race.
As if a lifetime of being beaten and abused by his father as a kid, and thereafter hated and mostly misunderstood wasn't enough, he was murdered at 40 and the scene was arranged to leave the impression that he died from a heroin overdose. He asked that his head stone simply state,.......' A Man '.
No boxers wear cups
Great fight. My money was on Max. Made $3.20! I didn’t watch it live though. Tickets weren’t cheap. Max is a swell gentleman who could clobber anyone.
Heck, how old are you, if you don't mind me asking?
@@ewooll 109. Why?
A 22 year old Tony Galento demonstrates his legendary Mayweather Jr like defence.
Too bad Baer and Louis didn't have a rematch with Joe's title on the line, but Baer lost his next fight with Lou Nova and later was stopped again by Nova so Nova wound up fighting Louis for the title and was KO'd in the 6th round.
Galento was a far better, more savvy boxer, than he has ever been given credit for. He was also a pretty good "All-In" wrestler in the old ungoverned days, and not a bad actor as in "Sergeant Bilko" aka "The Phil Silvers Show". There is a nice tale told about him: He was cashing up and wanting to clear out his bar, and a customer kept irking with: "Aw c'mon Tony, what was it like to get hit by Joe Louis?" So after a few such blandishments, Mr Galento says: "Do you really wanna know what that feels like?" The dummy says: "Yeah!" So Mr Galento laid him out with one punch, and the bloke never asked again.
Tony Galento was an unusual fighter, in the way he would happily block all punches with his face and then try and knock them out with head, as well as trying to cuddle and dance them around the ring ! Apart from this he had a powerful left hand and could take a punch to the chin, he was obviously a brave man with a lot of guts as many fighters found out. Tony Galento was definitely no bum (as Tony would refer to many of his opponents) and fought the best of his time !!
Galento's left hook was quite a serious punch. I've heard that even in his older years he could show up at a gym and just about tear a heavy bag off the chain with it.
He's also pretty physically strong under the fat, and yes, deceptively fast. Louis disposed of him quickly because he was one of the greatest heavyweights ever, maybe the greatest, but for most fighters, knocking Galento out or stopping him was a tall order.
MorayEel You've got to love this era of boxing. So many fighters, especially these two, who fought for show, but were still as tough as they come. They were also such colorful figures with an unparalleled sense of humor, especially Max Baer. What a joker, and still such a hard bastard. One can only admire these fellows. They really, really don't make 'em like this no more. Wish we had a Max Baer in todays boxing.
MrRoyalFatness Tyson Fury
Quite the contrary of what I was missing in todays boxing...
+MrRoyalFatness I agree. this was really the best
Thanks for sharing this
Lou Costello fought professionally under the name Lou King and was very good ... from Patterson NJ
I've seen Tony Galento interviews where he admits to head butting, using elbows&trying to thumb opponents in the eyes...he said-"If the ref don't stop me it ain't illegal".
Imagine Tony galento actually trained uther than with beer and chicken. Washed down with a cigar. He was a serious scrapper
One wonders what kind of a fighter Max would have been had he not beaten two of his earlier opponents to death. Every bio I have seen suggests he was extremely affected by that, drank, caroused and blew opportunities when he was younger. His win over the Italian giant, Primo Carnera, was more indicative of his real capabilities.
His win over Primo was a showcase in sloppy technique. It was hardly a vindication of his boxing ability. On his best day he was just a slugger with incredible power in his right hand
why there was not a rematch in september 1940 Between Max Baer and Joe Louis like they said?
max never wanted to fight Joe
Are you a boxer?
Because Baer lost to Lou Nova. Had he beaten Nova the rematch would have happened.
Wonder why the second Max Baer, Joe Louis fight didn’t happen?
it's amazing how low Tony's hands are...i mean if this had been during Max Baer's prime....he would have knocked out much more easily and earlier in the fight!
When I first learned about Galento and watched a couple of his fights, his stance reminded me a little bit of Mike Tyson's: very low to the ground because each was fairly short as heavyweights go. "Peekaboo stance" as it was called during Tyson's prime. Mike was obviously a helluva lot faster and more powerful than Tony ever was.
Thanks for the video, FIGHTFILMGUY
How about that, Lou Costello of Abbout and Costello during the after fight interview!
I've heard different accounts, but I believe that just a few days before fight Galento's brother had shoved a drinking glass into his face during a dispute they were having over something. Tony went into the fight with a deep unhealed wound in his mouth.
Round 3, Tony catches Max in the throat with a forearm smash while he is on the ropes. Two tough customers scrapping, great stuff!
Couple of things. #1- this was a great demo for elbow and other cheap shots from both. #2-Too bad that two-ton didn't go for Bear's body. He was constantly wide open. Could have been a different outcome.Anyone's thoughts.
I doubt either of them even trained for the fight lol, If Baer took it seriously he would have knocked him out in a round or two.
Plus max was delivering some pretty good body blows when galento did get in close n tie him up, which I guess was smart in that it prevented max from t-ing off on his head
Galento conditioning fading away by the 5th round.
That's exactly what Galento was a street fighter

I love all 3 of these guys. Max. Lou. And joe.
every time they were in the clinch galento was throwing elbows...those were the days when two men stood toe to toe and threw bombs....the good old days
Awesome! Thanks
I mever saw Galento box before UA-cam but after his boxing career I saw him wrestle on TV many times.
Mike Jacobs had a legendary collection of fight films that Cus D'Amato had Mike Tyson study endlessly.
If anyone knew where the missing footage of the 1st Marciano/Charles fight is, it would be Mike Jacobs.
Galento could have been great with proper conditioning.
Max Baer great guy
Tony was agreat fighter & agood. Friend.
Tony Galento trained on smoking cigars and drinking beer. I've read that he cut his mouth before this fight and it was hard for him to breathe.
cut his mouth ???? what ??? what do you trying to say??
He was a great self-publicist. He must have had some stamina to flog around that ring for so long as he did, even if this was a staged event. By this I mean that he MUST have trained to the limit, however short, of his stamina to last that long.
That was his skill in creating a character.
That is a fact, thank you for posting that.
Not the worst boxing I've ever seen but It's certainly top 3. Woeful doesn't cover it.
These days, there are fifty year old boxers in the ring. Max Baer had a massive heart attack at 50. Poor guy was in a hotel and called room service for something to soothe his upset stomach. He never realized he actually had heart issues. He was supposed to meet someone next morning. He didn't show, so someone was sent to his room and found him passed away.

How many pies did Galento eat to get to match fitness?
Baer versus Bear...
WTF is Galento doing in a boxing ring... he is simply a bar room brawler, a typical bouncer!
Account here calls this Max Baer last WIN. It wasn't. He fought twice again past the Tony Galento meeting. His last was LOSS. His next match he won a KO-1 vs Pat Comiskey. Cominsky very "accomplished" career himself in-his-own right. Baer met Comiskey when Comiskey was 29-1-1 and the loss they said he won. Finished his career (Comiskey) 74-12-2 stopped only twice w/incredible 61 KO. What happen vs Baer Idk. Three pictures of match on the fight bio. Looks as if Comiskey cut-up.
I researched his other stop defeat. Woe. Story in and of itself. Vs Henry Flake.
Max lived 18 1/2 years past that final career fight (& loss). Died at age of 50. RIP Max Baer and ALL THE BOXERS AND CAREER GUYS FROM THAT ERA!

Max Baer was a truly nice guy which kinda upsets me the way he was betrayed in the Movie Cinderella Man! In the movie they made Max seem like a total asshole! I watched his training films and he is always the same way cracking jokes and just having a good time! It's crazy when you think about the fact that Jethro on the Beverly Hillbillies is Max's son! Talk about total opposites! And it looks like what I had heard that Max and Joe Lewis were friends outside of the ring!

Two tough old brawlers having a good old scrap with neither man having trained or prepared themselves in any way lol.
Galento is actually faster than Maxie. Tony had good timing, hand speed, and could be quite foxy for a few rounds. Too bad Tony had an eating disorder and trained on beer. There was a great fighter underneath all that clinically obese blubber.
Max Baer too intelligent to be a fighter.
did these guys wear mouthpieces back then?
Well, that was something different. Like one o them scraps you used to see in an old Buster Crab film or at school. Granted, a middle aged fat git can also put up a fight but really, two ton Tony looks like a guy from the public just got into the ring to have a go. Max was a stylish boxer, like a matador in his pose, its an ugly contrast to see this scrap with “oil moyda tha bum!” Tony. Shame he didnt knock him out.
Galento could have been a good fighter, maybe even great, if he had had discipline. But he didn't have any at all. A lot of potential, that never got developed.
Nice try, you should be a comedian. I’m on the floor laughing.
great old film coverage. Baer was not quite washed up yet at 31 years old. Galento was never really in shape, and if he was in shape Galento would have been a cruiserweight, maybe in the 190s.
Neither one of those guys had much boxing skill. Where were the jabs? Baer was much taller and should have been sticking out his jab but instead he usually waited for Galento to charge in and then tied up.
Should be a movie made about Two tons. What a character.Max said he smelled like a week old tuna fish sandwich washed down by a tub of beer. Lou would be considered a racist today. He called them boy.
Galento was one tough guy. His diet of spaghetti seem to work out for him However, Baer wasn't any better with beer, cigars and women as a part of training regimen.
when galento was 21 years old 220 slugger! I heard stories that he teared a bag with his left hook..and send the bag flying also he was clownig with his sparring partners and leave many unconscious! his trainer told him to stop!..and many wear afraid to spar him!
