Tony "Two-Ton" Galento -vs- Jackie Gleason | as told to Rocky Marciano (16mm Transfer)
Вставка
- Опубліковано 8 лют 2025
- In 1960, former heavyweight champion Rocky Marciano was contracted to host a boxing and interview program called Main Event. Each of the 30 episodes included studio interviews between Rocky and a contemporary celebrity, actor or sports star. The interviews lasted only a few minutes each, and were followed by the feature presentation being a recent or classic boxing match. Some shows were better than others, but all the interviews were interesting, and the best ones were classic.
Here is the Jackie Gleason's famous episode with Rocky Marciano, where Gleason describes his famous altercation with Tony "Two-Ton" Galento outside a night club. I also really enjoyed their refreshing and genuine conversation.

These old timers had style, class and charm.
You romanticize the past like too many people do.
@Cutting Yoko’s Bra! Yes. That's correct.
Rocky Marciano; what a lovely, articulate, pleasant gentleman you were; a tragedy you were taken at such an early age.
Marciano - GOAT
& in such a terrible way of going out at that🕊🙏
Exactly what we all want in a man: thoughtful and generous in conversation yet implacable in combat.
It moved me so much when I learned that, after beating his hero Joe Louis, Marciano wept.
So this was magnificent. Two of the greatest entertainers of all time just sitting there talking to each other.
The Galento story is an all time classic!
I was fortunate to have meet Jackie Gleason back in 1977. I never Meet Rocky Marciano but loved him as a fighter and seems to have been a very nice man. These two men are legends. What a nice video to get a person back into a positive mood.
For all you young guys out there. This is a lesson in humility. This how men are suppose to speak to each other. Respect yourself and those around you.
Two great gentlemen/ rest in peace Rocky & Jackie
Indeed
The Undefeated and the Great One.
Jackie is jimmy fallon.
@@nickb3345 Jimmy could not hold up Jackies Jock strap.
I don’t know well that’s his own fault.
They used to have such "professionals" in this country; people that took real pride in their craft. That, of course, would be true of these two greats.
@Vegan Higler We had it too safe and too comfortable for too long. It made the country soft physically, spiritually, intellectually. Now we're starting to pay a terrible price.
Amazing how even fighters were once so elegant, humble, classy, and well-spoken. Humanity, for all it's technological advances, has regressed.
NOW THE PIGS DESTROY THE WONDERFUL WORD MOTHER...VILE MOUTH PIGS....MOTHER IS A SACRED NAME NOT TO BE USED BY FILTHY THUGS IN SUCK A DIRTY WAY
Regressed is an understatement. So many fighters today can't even read. They have every opportunity to learn but refuse to. If you don't speak ebonics to them they wouldn't understand a damn thing you say.
@@kennethlucas7473 I take it the hypocrisy of calling someone white trash while accusing them of racism is completely lost on you?
Rocky would humble SO many ppl in today's world lol
Hate to burst your bubble boys but Marciano got crushed by a guy named Roland Lastarza the mob fixed this fight but anyone who was there said lastarza won unanimously . in their second fight lastarza was dominating again until a right cross felled him.
That was a beautiful interview..Rocky was really awesome
My late- Uncle Bozzy (Isadore) Kaplan was the boss & owner of the Club Miami on Clinton Ave.mentioned by Gleason.
So did he bring up the Galento Gleason fight?
It's an awesome story. Gleason was a tough dude but no match for a bad-ass like Galento.
not to mention Gleason kind of didn't see the punch coming as he only got a few words out
ones was an actor, one was a professional fighter. pretty obvious who would win in a fight
Galento went toe to toe with Joe Louis, even knocking Joe down, so I am sure Gleason was no match for him.
@@EBUNNY2012 Joe "carried" him because he wanted to punish him for all the nasty thing Galento said. Joe toyed with him and got caught. He then knocked the bum senseless and they mercifully stopped it in the 4th or Joe would have killed him. Galento was a bully street fighter who was an embarrassment to the sweet science with his dirty tactics in the ring.
Galento blamed his trainers for the loss because they convinced him "not to fight dirty" , but instead try to box Louis... Yeah right.Lol
@@TheNYgolfer
He was a street brawler not a boxer but if he had trained and had more than a left hand he would have been a huge force. Boxing and fitness was not evolved yet but he kinda fought with Tyson's style and had the same body type.
The Rock! My favorite fighter of all time. He was before my time but he's still a favorite.
inbredagogo The only heavyweight champ who never lost a bout!
@aaron pryor He laid out the bruthas though...knocked out the processing out of their hair....
you picked a good one to be your favorite
@@jimlaguardia8185 lets be real here, true he never lost a fight, but he only defended his title 6 times, once against a 41 year old Archie moore.
Tony Amarillas Yeah he did. But that’s if you’re including the old ass washed up bruthas. Wow, some fighter!!!
Two great ones. Jackie - so articulate and so thoughtful.
Thank you for these gems. They mean a lot to me. Long live the sport of "boxing".
These two celebrities exude admirable virtues. All class .
My father grew up watching Marciano! And he speaks total super hero about the man! He and actually all or most fighters are very gentle and kind, like Rocky Marciano was! That’s real..
The Greatest chatting with The Great One...terrific, seldom heard candor... Many thanks!
Thanks for this! No television like this anymore 🤦♂️
The Rock what a great fighter what a Champion x
WOW !!! ... What a wonderful interview of Jackie Gleason and Rocky Marciano.
Thankz FFG.
Wonderful, wonderful clip. Galento was a very tough guy.
He knocked down Joe Louis. Now that's saying something!
Aww Jackie Gleason. One of my all time favorites. The Honeymooners. Geez they were great back then.
Loved what Jackie said about Art Carney...what a great team they were!
Rocky got to interview some of the greats from many walks of life..this was one of the best..and Galento from Orange was one tough guy...but he also helped a lot of street kids.
Rocky became friends with his opponents after fights. As a person he was a real great guy.
TWO UNDEFEATED CHAMPIONS ROLE MODELS EXTRAORDINAIRE HEAVEN IS BLESSED FOREVER
This upload is pure gold,...two real gentleman, and the story of Gleasons encounter with the tough street boxer Galento is a great little snipit into the great Jackie Gleasons colourful life
Great clip, thanks for posting
Marciano vs Galento would’ve been a fun brawl.
two greats that are missed.
Men of class and immense talents.
Two of my all time favorite persons.
Two of my favorite gentleman.
That gift that Rocky have Gleason must be worth a fortune today 👍🏆🏅
My dad loved both these guys, much respect for them. The older I get, the more I understand...no pretense, just honest and hearty people...the kind you never had to guess where you stood by with!
Heavyweight boxers are dangerous men, no matter what age. I remember watching George Chuvalo shadow boxing at a gym I used to go to. He was up there in age and not in shape, but the hand speed was remarkable for a guy not in fighting shape. You wouldn't want to go anywhere near him. Scary to think what he could have done when he was in his prime.
See Mike Tyson at 54? V good hand speed as well
There is a great documentary here on UA-cam about Chuvalo. It was done by the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. in the early 2000's. Worth a watch. Much respect for Chuvalo.
I had forgotten how much Rocky sounded like Lou Costello when he spoke!
Yes, I do hear that!!
Roy Pitta Not everyone knows Costello also started a career in the boxing ring before getting into comedy
Lou was the tough guy in real life w Abbott
Lou Costello didn’t have a New England accent
Icons of a by gone era. The great one and the Brockton blockbuster!
One thing is for sure. Rocky Marciano, 49-0, 43 KO, only undefeated Heavyweight Champion.
Great video... thanks!
I used to watch Main Event back when it was on Classic Sports Network before ESPN bought it. I had read about the Gleason-Galento incident, but never saw this episode.
Old time gentleman, how times have changed....
Wow. Two class acts together, talking. A gift to have been able to watch it.
Spot on mate..my thoughts exactly 👍
Thanks badger. At least we have them recorded. Take care.
Don’t know it it was true or not, but it is said that as a man in his ‘70s, Jack Dempsey was accosted by a couple of hoods getting into his car, He decked each one of them. He used a cane and they thought him an easy harm. The most dangerous man does not look like one.
Dempsey was the Roberto Duran of his time but as a heavyweight...savage
Wow, that was excellent, much better than I anticipated.
These people came up the hard way and were intelligent and good men who understood human nature and appreciated life and the rewards of meaningful and solid friendships.
Back in the day of second hand smoke. Rocky Marciano, great heavyweight.
Marciano was a decent all around athlete. Played football and was a semi pro level baseball player. He would have kicked Gallento's ass in the ring or the street. But for your average joe, Gallento was not a guy you would want to meet in a bar fight.
Don't be so sure about outside the ring it's a completely different game, he also knocked down an absolute peak Joe Louis
@@jimmygreen4325 thats no bs. Tony was a beast, and he was a huge man, if Rocky said that about him, he meant it. Tony was nuts. If he grabbed a man in a street fight, any man would have serious problems.
@@chuckweiny1546 I agree mate the man was a monster, what a great interview
Marciano was in wrestling before boxing so he know wrestling and boxing and he would knock Tony in few seconds but if you're not fighter Galento could kick your ass
Galento and Andy Ruiz are The Boxie twins
Greatness on display!
Drank a qt. of scotch every day, legendary train trips to Miami. "How sweet it is."
I read that Galenta didn't shower for months before fighting Louis. He used that as a defense. Who the heck would want to get near him to belt him. Imagine poor Joe trying to go in for the kill only to be greeted by that odor.
Ted your comment stinks! I'm knocked out haha.
Ted Baxter I once read a story about Muhammad Ali’s title defense against Jean Pierre Coopman. It seems as though Coopman had a bad case of gas and was stinking up the ring during their fight.
@@silverapplesegp8112 “Into Mush” did you even watch the fight? Was pretty equal throughout
He still knocked Joe on his ass tho. Tough sob
Greatest boxer in history. Greatest talk show host in history. Double champ
Hi JJ, I have most of the episodes, but missing a few. I'm looking for the shows with guests: Jonathan Winters, Ed Sullivan, Paul Newman and Sammy Davis Jr.
Truly the Greatests Generation, we owe our Country to these People, many were Children of Immigrants whose Parents
embraced and loved America.
These people saved the World
And this generation is pissing it away!
It is awful that Galento would pick a fight with a nonprofessional. A truly cowardly act!!
True
I agree. Galento was an asshat.
Two exceptional professionals 👌🏻🙏🏻
Marciano vs Galento...would have been interesting..but only for maybe 5 rounds..galento would run out of gas from eating 150 hot dogs 2 hours before the fight....then Rocky would land that infamous "Susie Q " right hand...and that's all she wrote. Rocky's 49-0 record will haunt the Heavyweight Division....for all of time.
deontay wilder is almost there
@@hime6830 Tyson Fury said hold my beer.🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Marciano would break the ribs of both wilder and fury
Rocky was also technically more sound and adjusted well during fights.
@@SB-ok3xc as great as Marciano was, it's doubtful that he's break the ribs of any of the top five heavyweights today. He never weighed in above 195 lbs in his career, if that. Today, he would be a Cruiserweight. So, it would be more fair to place him against an Oleksandr Usyk (when he was still a cruiser), Maris Breidis, etc.
Guys like Anthony Joshua, Tyson Fury, Deontay Wilder, Alexandre Povetkin, Dillian Whyte, Joseph Parker, etc. would likely be a bit much for him. Guys like Lennox Lewis, Vitali Klitschko, Wladimir Klitschko very likely stop him inside of 12 rounds. He'd just be too small to compete with them, particularly the more technically sound and athletic ones mentioned. Doesn't take away from him being an all time great one bit, though.
Jackie Gleason, Rocky Marciano - 2 great men, who had their time at the top of their professions,
1 a fighter and 1 a comedian, but to get there, both would have had to endure a hard, rough 'slog' to reach their status, especially starting their professions and working there way through a very hard & poor time of America, a very different world of today. Both would have come into contact with Organised Crime - In the fight game - definitely ( fixed fights and threats, rough with a capital R ) and as a comedian, working the club's, often owned by Organised Crime syndicates also.
Two very great men,
RIP Rocky and Jackie - you both got there !
Thank you for video. Two great men. I would so enjoy having a beverage with these two " Greatest" thoughtful gentlemen. Real Class
Liked the way Jackie Gleason presented himself. Much better than anything he ever did later.
Almost too much greatness on this screen for my brain to handle, man these guys had 'it'
Joe Louis told Curt Gowdy on The Way it Was that the toughest man he ever fought was Tony Galento. Galento was on the wane of his career when he fought Louis. Speaks volumes and I’m more inclined to listen to Joe Louis than what others have to opine on here.
Galento was at his very best when he fought Louis. He achieved the highest ranking of his career around that time period and beat guys like Nova.
I like the story of Rocky, when He was in the army in England, He was approached by a U.S. Army unit who were having real trouble with a big Aussie soldier stationed near by. When down the local pubs this Aussie a tough street fighter would pick on the Americans and floor them. Anyway Rocky agreed to go down the pub with the guys and kept a low profile. Sure enough the Aussie went up to Rocky and started pushing Him, Rocky bent low and then unleashed a volley of shots into the big ugly Australian knocking him cold. This Guy was never seen again in a pub ! Which I think answers the question could Rocky be as good as Two Ton Tony in a bar brawl. Better !!
Rocky got arrested with another US soldier for beating up and mugging two English men whom they had been drinking with all day whilst stationed in the UK he had to do community service back in USA as punishment
@studentofsweetscience Google it
In happened in Cardiff. Wales, not England
@@kimholland9316 thanks for info

Rocky comes across as a great human being and a true gentleman, modest and unassuming. Wish there was more. Loved Jackie too esp. in the Hustler.
Great story. Two all time greats in their respective fields. Jackie Gleason had a really cool looking, ufo shaped house in new york state. As Jackie was a life long ufo buff. It's outside new york city kinda in the middle of nowhere. There's video's of it on youtube and I believe it's still there today in good shape. I think another family owns it now.
It still stands in Peekskill, NY.
Jack Dempsey was Galento's manager for a while, and one day popped unexpectedly into the gym while Galento was supposedly training ,....but Dempsey caught Galento training lightly and not taking it seriously,....so an angry Dempsey stripped of his expensive suit short and tie,...jumped into the ring with Galento. and battered him badly ,...Galento ran from the ring to avoid further punishment,...and Dempsey calmly got dressed and said ,...."you lazy bum" ', go find yourself another manager" ... " i quit "!......
If that’s true,I love it! .Dempsey was savage !
@@jonathanhanser5914 it's 100% correct,... Dempsey took no prisoners in the ring,....and definitely took none out of the ring either....
Two legends....
2 legends.
I wonder where that gift of the golden gloves the Rock gave Jackie are today. They should be in a museum somewhere.
Jason his grandson prob has them(Robards)
Wonderful fun clip. Funny this was the Bratton-Miceli fight they were talking about as Gleason had a character he did called Charlie Bratton the Loudmouth.
Rocky ,a true really very human gentleman and strong italian....Number 1 of ever....From Ripa Teatina, close Roma,Italy, italian Warrior Rocco Marchigiano, called Rochy Marciano❤️❤️❤️
in retirement rocky marcano and mike Tyson were similar in the way they spoke.
reg5381: How were they similar? Both had tough lives, both were small by heavyweight standards, and both had tremendous power behind their punches. If Tyson didn't screw up so royally out of the ring he might have retired undefeated too.
Nothing alike except for what Cap Cave said. Both charismatic but Rock was a gentleman and refined (for a boxer) Tyson was/is Brooklyn : lively colorful dynamic and somewhat savage...whose saving grace is he got old ,mellowed and needed to make BACK some $.
Love em both!
Marciano pulverizes Galento a thousand times in a row. He was every bit as tough and in infinitely better condition.
Absolute fact, no question. As tough as Galento was, he was simply no match for Rock. And after he woke up from being knocked out, he would have called Rocky a bum and said it was a lucky punch! One of boxing histories great characters.
Oh yeah
Galento would beat Marciano he was 50lbs heavier also with an iron chin, could fight 15 rounds and hit like a sledgehammer.
Galento was never counted over he either lost on points, retired hurt and 1 TKO against Louis.
@@alexwillis7093 not a chance in hell would he beat the Rock imho
@@alexwillis7093 Galento beat Marciano? Are you joking? Never would have happened

WOW WOW WOW WOW GREAT VIDEO
"Keep it in the Ring", all boxers creed
brilliant
I wish I had some of those boxer statues on the shelves behind Rocky.
And to think Rock didn't object to the cigarette...
Rocky was a role model. I regret I didn't follow him, not necessarily as a boxer but as a man.
To the moon Rocky, to the moon!
terrific stuff.
Now that I watch Mike Tyson podcast I really see how he following his heroes footsteps... except instead of costume golden gloves Mike gives them a weed box care package
I would sure like to hear Jackie talk more about meeting Jack Johnson
Hey FFG, do you have a listing of all of the 30 Main Event episodes broadcasts? Are they all on the collector's market or are some lost? I think I have around 10 or so.
Don't ever underestimate a tough street fighter and dangerous man like a Tony Galento. He almost never trained, drank like a fish, chased the women and still put a young, awesome Joe Louis on his ass! I have know a few Stocky, viscous Italian kids in my youth that were just as tough, but, made a living at other things!
"he never trained"
Then why was he so muscular beneath that fat?
The man went 14 rounds against Lou Nova.
He sure as hell trained and conditioned himself.
GREAT story, Jackie tangled with the WRONG guy that night😂🤣🥴👊👊👊👊
I wonder if they (Galento & Gleason) became friends afterwards...
Both (Real) men, class acts.
Tony Galento was one tuff customer...✅
Boy would I love to go out with those guys for just one night. Have Jackie for the laughs and Marciano as my protector. Class all the way Rip gentleman
😂😂😂..."That was really a big mistake "....lol
Gleason was a brilliant guy. It comes across as soon as he opens his mouth. If Gleason had been able to control his weight he would have been an even greater athlete than he was an entertainer.
Wow on the tough streets of Newark great story
Two of my fav's!!
Would have loved to have see two badass guys Marciano and Galento fight. Rocky would have "moida-ed da bum".
Galento had a mean left hook. Almost knocked out Joe Louis with it
Yeah. He rocked Louis twice in their fight. He buckled Louis' knees in the first round, and later knocked him down with it (2nd or 3rd round).
Great story
Jackie Gleason was a bouncer /comedian for many years . New Jersey clubs .
