Max Baer had me laughing like hell. He hit Schmeling several times, then began rotating a forehand then a backhand, a forehand then another backhand. Apparently you could use a backhand because the referee said nothing and Baer hit him 5 or more times with a backhand. Not being used to seeing it, it looked funny as hell, almost like a 3 stooges skit.

Max Baer was a larger-than-life character....he was a great fighter that had tremendous punching power. If he would have learned how to box he could have been an all-time great. He destroyed Schmeling in this fight. Note that Schemling was not a NAZI and later on worked for the Coca-Cola company.
Look idiot Schemling was also persecuted by the NAZI's. He was literally wiped out after the war. Coca Cola gave him a job as a representative for the company and he did very well....even helped out Joe Louis. That's more than the country did for Joe Louis....the IRS robbed him of all his money. First let me say that I'm a born and raised Southern boy from the USA. That said, Jethro Sr. was a dirty fighting son of a gun! I'm not a Nazi sympathizer. I'm not a Schmeling fan either. I've been an avid fan since the 60's and I always heard that Baer fought dirty but when you look at his life outside the ring, he seems to be a really nice guy. When the internet and sites like UA-cam came along, we old guys were finally able to watch some of the great heavyweight fights. Every fight that I see of Max Baer's, he's holding and hitting, low blows, elbows all the time, rabbit punching...he couldn't have fought after the 60's and television because he would have had so many points deducted and disqualification that nobody would know him and the Beverly Hillbillys would not have had Jr. as Jethro. The way God planned it I suppose!
I remember a different Max Baer. When I was a youth in the Bay Area in the 1950s, Max would host telethons all night long for worthy causes like muscular dystrophy, and others..... He was very sensitive, and would often have tears in his eyes.... To me and others, he was a very special guy.........
a lot of them yes. Some maybe but a lot of fights were fixed by the mob not just Carnera's, he payed the price to be Italian during the fasxcist era. Not for sure the Sharky one. Sharky denied any fixeed thing till his Death. Stupid ass propaganda
What tickled me was the little move that Baer pulled several times; he would quickly grab Schmeling by the head with his right arm and hurl him toward a corner, and as Schmeling recoiled Baer would quickly smack him with a smart left hook. It's obvious that Baer had rehearsed this stunning little Hollywood stunt that he pulled off in one complete motion.
Pretty rough fight for Schmeling. Baer holding and hitting, back-handing, pulling by the neck and also punching after holding his glove as an apology for a previous foul!!
Besides Ali, Max Baer is one of my fav fighters. Millions loved him and fighters respected him. RIP Maxie and may GOD give you all the blessings in Heaven,
Why is the title calling this a light heavyweight fight when the light heavyweight limit in those days (and even today) is 175lbs? Schmeling weighed 189 and Baer was 202lbs.

@Happy Man Considering how the second fight went down it kind of did erase it. Louis beat Schmeling so bad in the rematch that it was almost hard to watch, Louis took him much more seriously in the rematch and showed that he was on a different level. No disrespect to Schmeling but Louis was a once in a lifetime phenom.
@@demiurgeobzen327 I agree to an extent but keep in mind, an aging Schmelling beat a prime Louis who had beaten the best in Baer, Canera, Sharkey, Levinsky, and others. Two years later Louis certainly avenged his defeat in a very impressive manner, and solidified his legacy, but that doesnt take away from Schmelling being the single man who took out perhaps the greatest heavyweight of all time in his prime (while past his own prime no less!)
I have seen Tennis matches with fewer backhands than this match. You would think that people would die from punches like in the last minute of the fight. Max must have been made of Iron.
Baer was never boring that's for sure. He had dynamite in his right hand, but some of the punches he threw in this fight looked downright amateurish, but I understand he liked to have a little fun in the ring to break up the monotony, but if he stayed on his game he was downright deadly in there. He certainly had all the tools, reach, power, chin, strength, etc, and if he had utilized them a little better he would've been unbeatable.
As amazing as these older exchanges are, anyone else notice or is it just me, these guys really don't move their heads much! Which now I think is why those nasty full swipe shots land so often.
watch foreman and louis on my page and you tell me which era used more angles/fluidity/timing/defense and if you see the same obsolete flaws from the Louis era in 70s-90s
This is not a light heavy fight. The light heavy limit in 33 was 175lbs. These guys are both over that. Baer is 203lbs, he would be a heavyweight today.
I honestly think Baer, Louis, and Schmeling had a major part in shutting up the eugenics and racial "science" talks of the day. All three represented a major piece of the debate (Baer = jew, Louis = black, Schmeling = germanic) and all three showed the general public that any body can regardless of race be successful.
Max S a real tough guy to take so many hits from Max Baer! Baer actually hit max S with a back fist also! Did you see that? Referee let Baer do that with out taking a point off Max B.
Schmeling and Joe Louis had great admiration for each other and became good friends. Schmeling knew that Joe was broke and he helped him a time or two in that regard. I Think Max would visit Joe, coming here mainly for that reason. It's nice to see that happen, 2 really decent gentleman.
Interesting- how scientifically Schmeling fought Joe Louis in their first fight, while not being able to get out of the way of Baer's wild, telegraphed, looping punches. He just ate Baer's punches. Proof that different styles make for different fights.
watch foreman and louis on my page and you tell me which era used more angles/fluidity/timing/defense and if you see the same obsolete flaws from the Louis era in 70s-90s
Schmeling was a helluva tough guy. He took some crazy shots from Baer there in the tenth round. They are looping haymakers, though--very dramatic (and it's amazing that a sharp tactician like Schmeling could get caught like that, but obviously he was tired) and showy, but those kinds of looping punches lose a lot of power in transit. Compare them to Joe Louis's short, compact punches when he demolished Schmeling in the first round of their second fight. THOSE shots had legs, hips, torso, spinal column, PHYSICS behind them.
Baer hit hard no less, in his hooks he did a modified version of the Dempsey falling step which basically consisted of him leaping into his punches with his front foot off the ground, thus transferring all the kenitic energy into his hand which resulted in extreme power. Baer certainly didn’t figure this out on his own, earlier in his career he trained with the great Jack Dempsey who taught him this, though it seems Baer didn’t listen to much else from his far more elusive, and scientific coach.
video on my shows people joe faced and george faced,in that video shows for a fact joe and his era were way less advanced in these areas tech/fluidity/timing/angles used/defense,than people in the video george fought Even no names were way more advanced in every area, this whole era looks like novices
Watched the fight again. Lost count of the back handers, neck hold n throw at the ropes, down chop with glove edge and forearm to the face. All from Max. He was a real tiger with a great chin too.
Max Schmeling was an oddity of a fighter. He could be brilliant, even dominating in streaks, but he could also lose fights he should have won-this fight being one. Interestingly, Nat Fleischer considered Schmelling to be an all time great. Listing him as one of the 10 best heavyweight boxers to ever live. Ranking him higher than Marciano.
Oh dear, Kai Anttila, why not check the facts! Baer fought Schmeling on June 8th 1933. Max's next fight was against Carnera where he won the title, then, in his next fight, Max lost the title to Braddock. But Max's greatest achieved was fathering the wonderful Max Baer Jr who played daft Jethro in the TV series "The Beverly Hillbillies.
Lunatics on forums for years said joe and rock could beat guys in 70s-90s,yet never facing anybody as advanced as the average guys in those era's people on the net are really insane
Baer was a clown-the thumb in the eye, back hand, low blow, always clowning. He outweighed Schmelling by probably 20 pounds in this fight, that was the difference.
Ironic how both these fighters have been misrepresented in film and history: Schmeling as a goose-stepping Nazi, which he most certainly wasn't, and Baer as a man-killing caveman who enjoyed sending men to their maker, a la Ron Howard's film 'Cinderella Man'. In truth Baer had nightmares for years and was deeply remorseful over what he did.
Baer had a 16 lb, weight advantage and wore Schmeling down. Also , backhanding a punch as Baer did more than once was illegal , but the ref said nothing. Also Baer's punches to the back of the head were illegal , but again the ref (I think it was Arthur Donovan) said nothing.
Great fight by both schmeling was big hearted tough methodical and had a great right hand, but Baer as raw as his style was, was more savvy and let his hands go with more confidence, on top of that he was a big puncher with a chin, which is amazing how schmeling endured what he did
Schmeling never complained about Max‘s very dirty tricks and fouls he did all along this bout: Low blows, hammerhands, backhead, holding and hitting. The worst trick was when he simulated a apologizing hand just to smash a left hook the next moment… Not my fighter.

In the fight above Max almost killed Schmeling, the last punch was at the back of Schmeling's head, the same kind that killed Campbell. I'm sure Baer had guilt for Campbell but it sure didn't seem to be the case during his fights.
One of the most brutal TKO's I have ever seen.
LOL, I was thinking the same thing!
I was just yelling at the ref until he didn't do anything. After that I was cracking my a$$ off!
It was illegal.
Backhands were definitely illegal lol. I don’t know why. It’s not like they don’t hurt any more than a regular punch
Yes my sentiments exactly....the friggin' backhand at least twice in the knockout sequence. It's always been illigal in boxing with gloves...!
Good grief, Baer hit him with that right hand at 20:42 hard enough to kill a mule. That Schmeling was still on his feet. i read that Joe Louis said no one hit him harder than Baer. I always believed it. Watching this I see why he said it.
Baer vs Fury would be a great boxing dream-match. Both have that Playfully Flamboyant Demeanor. Both were born Showmen.
21:05 El referee debió parar la pelea.
Louis said Marciano was the hardest hitter he ever fought, not Max Baer, but Baer was the hardest hitter Louis fought up until Marciano.
@@robertdecker4780 Or Baer vs Iron Mike Tyson; two of the deadliest punches in boxing history.
Max was kind of a dirty fighter. Lotta holding and hitting, back handed punches, and he did that almost like wresting spin move more than once.
sean fried . Max who? Both fighters same name
My goodness, you're right. In the first round alone, he holds and hits, and spins Schmeling into a corner and hits him there. Amazing the ref didn't penalize him.
They were both Max, be specific.
Max was always a dirty fighter and the other Max was always a clean fighter. Well anyway I really think they were great both of them.
Max baer was insane love his fights
Baer owned his man… Schmeling got worked over good… took it like a MAN from the better man tho… both had balls of steel...
Schmeling was the better fighter, but unfortunately,, a true gentleman ,in and out! Of the ring....and one can only wonder at the almost foolhardy courage, it must have taken to even agree
To such an uneven fight,,!! In new york,!.
All the anti-semetic hype,.....max baer, the dirtiest heavywieght of his generation, as an opponent,! (This fight being a great example.!)......a blind reef,......
..
Oh yeah,..
.let,s not forget the nazi,s waiting for him back home, should he fail,!!!
@@coletteharper6661 I agree, Baer holding and hitting, back hands, straight arms, etc. Schmelling much better boxer! Baer was fighting a blown up lightheavyweight! Baer was a nice guy out of the ring though!
@@coletteharper6661 Baer was the most outgoing loving person in the world. Rules in boxing were different then than now. Black hands were not against the rules. Everyone loved Max. Schmeling was the better technical boxer. Max was more just raw power.
What a fight! I admired the courage of Schmeling, even though he was an easy target in the later rounds. He was fighting a bigger and stronger opponent.
Max Schmeling was a great boxer and person!
@Jason Voorhees No he didn’t like Hitler at all but he had to go through a lot of attention from the Nazi’s because of his reputation. There is a good documentary about him on UA-cam. He became wealthy after the war and even paid for Joe Lewis funeral. Watch that documentary. Very impressive!
@Jason Voorhees Yes exactly, he was indeed used for German propaganda because of his great boxing legacy.
@Jason Voorhees There are persons who think all kind of things of US servicemen as well. In war time persons can’t choose freely to join the army or not! At least he was not a draft dodger as Jack Dempsey was!
@jasonvoorhees5640 Knocked out Joe Louis. What a bum... Went 4:3 against Hall of Famers. What a bum.... Participated in 4 "The Ring fights of the year", this here being one of them. Winning the other three of them all by K.o. (Risko, Stribling, Louis I) What a bum.... Was Heavyweight Champion of the World for more than two years. What a bum....
So I really don't know what your point is unless you are a JEW or some kind of right wing nut. Also, I bet you have a Coca Cola product in your home.
@@hanzon1529 I know I can't believe it either those are illegal punches that Baer was throwing

Look IDIOT he said that the Max was NOT a Nazi. Learn how to read.

So you are a left wing racist. Idiot, Baer was part Jewish.
"Also, I bet you have a Coca Cola product in your home.
So what? That was a really stupid post, even by racist standards. Some of them can actually read.
I think Baer was an all-time great, regardless. This was Baer at his best. He was such a gifted fighter and gifted natural athlete that he didn't really need to learn how to box. Who knows what would have happened if he had not had a broken right hand when he fought Louis.
@@jameshutchinson568 Baer exposed himself constantly; to do that against Louis was a death sentence.
Never seen a dirtier fighter than Baer in this bout, the referee allowed him to get away with it.
This was the first time I ever saw repeated intentional backhand forearm smashes in boxing
Sandy Saddler. Fritzy Zivic.
Believe it or not some of the rules we have in boxing didn't exist back then. such as a backhand or a neutral corner
Baer always had a reputation for being a dirty fighter
Dirty as fuck -luvd how schmeling didn't touch gloves with him in middle of first round after Baer holding his head with left-hand and hitting him with right, ref biased, let it go on too long in tenth, he was sitting duck -schmeling a good smart fighter tho
Baer was one of the all time great punchers!!!
Pretty proficient at landing a lot of backhands too
In the "Heat Of Battle"...@@brianchandler6127
I remember a different Max Baer. When I was a youth in the Bay Area in the 1950s, Max would host telethons all night long for worthy causes like muscular dystrophy, and others..... He was very sensitive, and would often have tears in his eyes.... To me and others, he was a very special guy.........
I think Baer and Carnera both don't get enough credit for what they did.
+George Havenhand Absolutely. true real Champions underrated by false propaganda
a lot of them yes. Some maybe but a lot of fights were fixed by the mob not just Carnera's, he payed the price to be Italian during the fasxcist era. Not for sure the Sharky one. Sharky denied any fixeed thing till his Death. Stupid ass propaganda
Carnera was a BUM....Bare could have been an all-time-great if he would have taken boxing seriously.
I agree
Love the Max bear hook followed by a backhander
Thanks for the post, btw. Nice long version.
Win or lose Baer showed the most character out of all the old school boxers, always smiling and laughing dood is a straight savage
Max S. was one of the greatest counter punchers who won the heavyweight championship!! He absorbed a hreat deal of punishment in thos fight as well.
This is Baers best filmed performance. No doubt he was motivated that night for bigger reasons
But two ton gallento gave Baer a good time that I think he would remember!!
Besides Ali, Max Baer is one of my fav fighters. Millions loved him and fighters respected him. RIP Maxie and may GOD give you all the blessings in Heaven,
Damn Max Baer was a dirty fighter
I cant believe Baer wasn't warned once by the ref for holding and hitting 🥊🥊🥊
Why is the title calling this a light heavyweight fight when the light heavyweight limit in those days (and even today) is 175lbs? Schmeling weighed 189 and Baer was 202lbs.
To make turds 💩 like you ask questions.
Baer's little sneaky professional fouls are things of rare beauty.
Mike Gallagher ...sneaky snakes are not beauty...reprehensible , like baers agenda...with his star of Remphan on his trunks...
@@getredytagetredy Did the poor Jewish man offend you by knocking out your Aryan posterchild 80 years ago? Would you have been able to change the outcome in the great Schmellings shoes? Elaborate
@@getredytagetredy - Spoken like a fool.
Some three years later, Schmeling would have the biggest win of his career when he knocked out the great Joe Louis in 12 rounds.
Yeah, I think he lost his next two fights after this one also. Maybe a draw mixed in there. The Joe Louis win was big for him, but Joe got him back big time.
@@billb.5183 No, Max only lost one more against Steve Hamas whom he beat decisevly in 1935 (ending his career).
I was so excited, I threw my straw hat at my laptop!
I have seen Tennis matches with fewer backhands than this match.
You would think that people would die from punches like in the last minute of the fight. Max must have been made of Iron.
This was not a Light-heavyweight fight! They were both Heavyweights!
This fight should have been called, "Taking it to the Max!"
This is not a light heavy fight. The light heavy limit in 33 was 175lbs. These guys are both over that. Baer is 203lbs, he would be a heavyweight today.
He'd likely be a cruiserweight. You don't see any HWs at 203 lbs today. Too small.
@@CC-Tron he would have just bulked up..he was 6'3" with a 81" reach pretty much same as Ali
Sure Lewis might have bulked up but he wasn't a natural heavyweight (by today's standards) in the 30's. Neither was Ali for most of the 60's.
I can't believe he got up!!!
Max S a real tough guy to take so many hits from Max Baer! Baer actually hit max S with a back fist also! Did you see that? Referee let Baer do that with out taking a point off Max B.
Schmeling was tough though
Schmeling and Joe Louis had great admiration for each other and became good friends. Schmeling knew that Joe was broke and he helped him a time or two in that regard. I Think Max would visit Joe, coming here mainly for that reason. It's nice to see that happen, 2 really decent gentleman.
schmeling was one of the toughest lb for lb sobs around. consider that baers right cross was literally foreman like.
Bear even killed a man inside the ring with that right hand
Interesting- how scientifically Schmeling fought Joe Louis in their first fight, while not being able to get out of the way of Baer's wild, telegraphed, looping punches. He just ate Baer's punches. Proof that different styles make for different fights.
@Just think Saw him in Prizefighter and the Lady. Also saw him in The Harder They Fall- where he played versions of himself in both pictures
Why is this entitled a "Light" Heavyweight fight ?
I WAS COUNTING HOW MANY TIMES MAX BAER WAS ADJUSTING HIS SHORTS.
Was this in slow motion video?
watch foreman and louis on my page and you tell me which era used more angles/fluidity/timing/defense and if you see the same obsolete flaws from the Louis era in 70s-90s
20:56 the windshield wiper technique...
lol
Lol
Boxing in the old days was just pure brute, there was no science. If Baer fought Muhammad Ali, he wouldn’t last 3 rounds, out in 2 - at the least
video on my shows people joe faced and george faced,in that video shows for a fact joe and his era were way less advanced in these areas tech/fluidity/timing/angles used/defense,than people in the video george fought
Even no names were way more advanced in every area, this whole era looks like novices
Who's tougher, Baer for throwing those punches, or Schmeling for taking them? Brutal....
Sorry to spoil but Max won

“Light Heavyweight “ fight.. smh!
Light Heavyweight Fight? They were heavyweights, not light heavies.
Maravilloso recuerdo.Gracias.
Due respect to both fighters, but it's hard to see them going very far in today's LHW division🤔
No one from this era made midcard fighting like this in 70s-90s,the average person in those era's were way more advanced this looks horrible
Lunatics on forums for years said joe and rock could beat guys in 70s-90s,yet never facing anybody as advanced as the average guys in those era's people on the net are really insane
Love Baer's right uppercut, by the way. Such a heavy shot.
The left uppercut followed by the right hand was lethal.
Looks like Max was 'Schmeling' another victory
At first I thought I was was watching a tom and Jerry introduction.
Back then, it was just a back ally fight with gloves
Baer was a clown-the thumb in the eye, back hand, low blow, always clowning. He outweighed Schmelling by probably 20 pounds in this fight, that was the difference.
@Just think
According the weights given in the film its Schmelling at 183 and Baer at 203. He 210 for Carnera.
I always admired the friendship between Joe Louis and Max. Classy.

Best fight I’ve seen all year! And it’s 2021! Swell job Max!
This is a HEAVYWEIGHT fight. NOT a light heavyweight fight.
How many uncalled infractions did Max Baer get away with in this fight? 🤣🤣🤣
The caption at 1:43 is wrong. The fight was at Heavyweight not Light Heavyweight.
Good stoppage; today, they stop it sooner. Boxing was rougher back then. These were two great fighters.
I'm not going to call baer a dirty fighter but he did know all the tricks. defend yourself at all times
Max Baer was throwing a back fist throughout the fight!! Hilarious
Baer was a dirty fighter...
I don’t think backhands were illegal back then could be wrong tho
I admire the efforts of both men. A very even and tough fight.
Great fight by both schmeling was big hearted tough methodical and had a great right hand, but Baer as raw as his style was, was more savvy and let his hands go with more confidence, on top of that he was a big puncher with a chin, which is amazing how schmeling endured what he did
I got two words for you all: Rocky Marciano
Schmeling never complained about Max‘s very dirty tricks and fouls he did all along this bout: Low blows, hammerhands, backhead, holding and hitting. The worst trick was when he simulated a apologizing hand just to smash a left hook the next moment… Not my fighter.
What's all that smoke in the back ground?
