Hi Lily, I am very much a long time silent viewer! (Been here since you lived at home and met you at beautychat live in 2015!) but I just wanted to say thank you for showing us your hair and taking us on this journey with you. I can clearly see how hard and vulnerable this is. The internet is also a crap place that you have to justify so much about how this is hard for you even though people have worse things going on - to me, what you’ve experienced with your hair sounds objectively painful and traumatic, but thank you for trusting us and taking us there. I look forward to maybe seeing this journey continue! ❤

The curly hair struggle is real, I feel you. The more you wear it curly, the more you get used to it. Air dried always looks best on me if I do curls.

Hey Lily! Just last week I went to a local salon that offered “curly hair styling” appointments and it was a totally game changer for me. The stylist evaluated my hair and my curl pattern and taught me how to wash it, what kind of products I should use in the shower, how to apply styling products, how to diffuse, and most importantly how to make my curly hair look “polished”. Usually I feel like my curly hair is too casual for going out. It was the best $69 I’ve ever spent at a salon and I can recipe d finding a curly hair sealing and getting a styling appointment enough!!

A couple tips for your curly hair:
    - It seems like you used to much product, especially the cream (cantu is heavy), but this is very trial and error
    - don’t run the cream through your hair, start scrunching from the beginning
    - you mentioned didn’t want to do it with your head down, because you already have to much volume, but at the end it seemed like you lacked volume (no need to be afraid!)
    - at the end, use a tshirt/100%cotton to scrunch your hair and remove the excess water/product!
Embracing curls is a very trial and error process, but it’s rewarding!

    • @madelinefaye
      @madelinefaye 4 місяці тому +2

I agree! It's so trial and error it takes months of hair washing and styling to figure out what products and what styling/drying techniques work!
With products I'd personally scrunch the curly cream with really wet hair and use a t-shirt or microfibre towel to scrunch out the excess water and then I'd go in with the gel by glazing it over the curls and scrunching it into them.
It also looked like maybe there was still a little bit of a cast after you'd finished at the end of the video, sometimes it takes quite a while to "scrunch out the crunch" and don't be afraid to give it a little fluff at the roots with your fingers to help separate the clumps
It's all about trying different methods out and not being disheartened if you don't get the results right away ❤️

All this! And dont put that many gel so its not that crunchy. The cream may be enough

I have worked out my best curls are literally a pump of conditioner after rinsing. That’s it, no gel, no curling creams. Just a pump to run through the ends and they will wipe hands over the top.
The other thing I would say to Lily (or anyone else wanting to try CGM) you have to stick with it. You need to keeping feeding your hair and the curls get stronger and silkier. It took me 12 months of nothing, the last 6 months I’m seeing big changes.

    • @sally_501
      @sally_501 4 місяці тому

Came here to say the same; it takes so long to get your hair feeling ‘right’ but it’s so worth it! I don’t use gel any more after I got more confident with my curl pattern, and I use the full range of Andrew Fitzimons (not entirely because they smell like coconut and marzipan I promise….) for me, finding a curl créme that worked with my very fine but very full head of ringletted hair was an absolute game changer. I brush the créme and the serum through very wet hair, scrunch for my life then pop it in a microfibre turban towel for an hour (or diffuse if I’m in a rush). After wash day I wet my hair a bit in the shower then liberally spritz with a reviver and scrunch with my head upside down. Boom, gorgeous juicy curls with a routine I can be bothered to keep up with.
Note: this is just what worked for me, you have to find the right balance for your hair. But it’s a lot of delicious smelling fun to try!

As a wavy AND lazy hair girl who also uses Cantu, tips:
    - use less product but don't forget to emulsify! There's a cut in that part of the video and don't know if you did, but that makes all the difference.
    - put the gel, part the hair, finger coil the bits you need to... Basically arrange the hair the way you want it to look.
    - "micro plop" gently, otherwise it will take ages to dry and you don't need the water once the products are in.
    - even if you air dry, use the hairdryer gently (without shaking the strands) to dry roots and a little in general.
    - DON'T TOUCH IT until it's completely dry, then use the oil to break the cast.
The hardest part is being patient while the hair does its thing 😅
But I really think short curly hair suits you. You just need to find what works better for you!
Love from an OG viewer from Spain ❤❤

@@ggenc you have to rub it in your hands with them being damp to "activate it", otherwise it won't do its job 😉

    Girl! ♥I got some tips:
You really don't need that much product. I like some cream and oil sometimes.
    1. Brush when wet, preferably underwater
    2. Only go through them with your hands after you're out of the shower
    3. Try taking only the cream, take just a bit, not too much, go through your hair with your fingers, then scrunch
    4. Then, wrap them in a cotton towel/t-shirt, leave for like 20 minutes, then gently dry them first at a low, then a higher temperature with your diffuser air dryer, they're gonna be more defined, and relaxed, trust me!

A curly (or wavy) hair journey takes time :) Time to figure out how to wash (up side down or straight up), which products to use and how much. But the biggest thing to keep in mind is your curls are technically damaged due to all the heat you have put on your hair. Its takes a while for the hair to recover from heat damage. That being said I love that you embrace your curls!

LOVE the Uniqlo selects and really appreciate you being vulnerable and sharing your growth in accepting your curly hair. I’d highly recommend having a consultation with a hair dresser that specialises with curly hair, then continuing to find what works for you. I’m Black woman in her 30s who just went natural 2years ago and am having to re-learn my natural hair (was relaxed for 20+ years). It’s annoying doing it now when I’m a working busy Mom but it’s better late than never. Keep going!

Regarding the hair part of the video I completely resonate with what you’re saying. This is how it feels for me being a black girl that doesn’t know how to manage my hair type living in Britain. I have used straighters since high school. My daughter is mixed race and I’m determined she has a better experience. I’m very protective of her when family members want to brush or plat her hair

Doing the coiling technique (like you did with the front bits) but with your deman brush all around your head makes such a difference and allows you to make your curl clumps bigger and more defined.

I have curly hair and have spent years battling it with a long long time of straightening it. Since COVID I pretty much stopped straightening my hair but the game changer of the last year is getting a haircut by a curly hair specialist. I now only ever let my hair airdry, use a leave in conditioner and use one styling product on it. I've found the less product, the better but that being said try a few things and see what works for you! Thanks for being you ❤ x

Get a continuous spray bottle! Definitely helps to keep your hair soaking wet and is good for refreshing during the week. To get bigger curl clumps, try finger coiling bigger sections or use the Denman, but hold your hair tight against the brush and sort of twirl it (you'll have to look up how - I don't know how to describe the process with words). I used to straighten my hair every day, and the transition was the toughest. Honestly, straightening it is way easier and quicker (for me) but my hair can't handle it anymore. I know we're supposed to love our curls but I'm still working on embracing mine.

I loved how honest and natural this video felt. Also big congrats on being brave and trying something that scares you. You are setting a great example for your daughters. I think the curly hair looks great on you. But of course that's personal preference and you should ultimately wear what you like more, but I guess ideally is out of taste and not trauma. I hope you can heal the relationship with your hair. It seems to me like you are making great progress and that's awesome to see. You look fabulous no matter the look!

I understand completely re the curly hair. I’ve struggled so much to like it and I’m 47 now. I’ve only been to hairdresser once and that put me off for life. Everyone’s life revolves around their hair cuts and I’ve never felt included or normal.
I’ve now found milkshake curl cream and that has really saved me. It was during lockdown I minimised my hair product usage. Stopped using heat and using less chemicals and daily hairspray to clamp it down and used less drying ingredients and the hair finally recovered, became more curly and even grew quicker.
I’m coping better with it now but it is still damaged on one side from me constantly fiddling with it for years. It’s just so high maintenance and stressful in so many situations that I feel straight haired people don’t encounter!

Honestly, your hair at the end looks really beautiful and suits you. It has your short wavy hair vibes but with more waves ❤️ Jamie has so many videos about her curly hair routine, you can adapt them to your hair and with larger curls you can have the hair that you used to without straightening and making waves with heat. Less fussy and less heat. I hope you can feel good in your natural hair, because really, it looks good!

I've got curly hair but find it takes a lot of work to get it beautifully curly! But one thing I did learn is that when your using the diffuser keep it at low heat and low air flow, don't move it around just let the hair sit in it and gently dry. Good luck 😊

I can so relate to the feeling of not feeling like yourself with curly hair! I fought my curls for as long as I can remember, up until five years ago. I now love my curls, but in the beginning it was really difficult even feeling slightly ok about my natural hair. It took quite some time, but to me it has been beyond worth it. It is about so much more than hair, and it became more and more evident to me with time. I think it’s about accepting and loving one self, truly and fully ❤

I’m a bit of an opposite to you lily , my mother hated my straight hair as a child , almost every night she would put my hair in rags to make the curls . Sometimes she used sugar and water to make it set !! I loved my straight hair as I grew up ! Then I had a massive tumour on my spine removed and many ops . So when my hair started to grow it was almost white and curly , must have been the shock !! Now I have subtle highlights and curly hair and I love it , so easy with the right products . It’s worth the bit of work getting used to it ! Good luck x

My hair is more wavy, but I have the keys to be drying it for 10-15 minutes in a towel and then scrunching it with a leave in conditioner. The biggest thing is that I don’t brush it after I get out of the shower - that allows my hair to do its thing more naturally. Thank you for sharing this journey!

I have long curly hair and what works best for a natural flowy look is not really that much product (bc it will make it super tight) and diffuser or air dry it, not really touching it to avoid freeze and good to go :) but if you dont feel confident with it, you can straighten the ends a little bit to make it more relaxed looking xx

From a fellow curly girl lover, I know you said you don't blow dry your hair upside down, because you don't need the volume, but I always end the blow dry (in the cold months, air dry during the hot ones) with my head upside down. It helps add volume to the curls too (not just the roots but the hair shaft) and it almost gives you a different look altogether as well. I'd say give it a try. Different techniques and combos work for each of us, and you have to experiment what you like from your end. I don't use the curly girl method as I don't have the time to do so, but I found my fave combos, whether I do finish with a cream / gel / moose, etc. Good luck, Lily!

Not gonna lie, it took about a year for me to get used to curls and the 2nd year my curls started behaving and forming much better. Now I love my curls and I appreciate curls on other women too. Hi Lily! I’ve always worn my hair curly and have rocked the bob in recent years. I’m happy you’re giving curly hair a chance! Everyone’s hair is different but I find my hair is better with just a cream, no gel and I would let my hair dry before quite rigorously shaking out the cast. I have slightly straighter front bits too (they say hair that is more exposed to the elements i.e. the top of your head is more likely to be straight) but I just add a bit more cream to these sections. Dont be afraid to touch it once it’s dry! This is often how I think it looks best, when flipped around to side parts etc. I’ve never heard of breaking the cast with oil, and have never found I need it! Hope this helps - please stick with it!

Hi Lily, I’ve been a silent viewer but I wanted to comment cause I have curly wavy hair and found it really hard to control my curls growing up. Little tip, our hair is never like it is when we were younger and your hair gradually changes even if you don’t go through pregnancy. Although my hair is still curly/wavy and frizzy it isn’t as much as before and I’m in my 30’s. I love your curls and you can totally embrace them without all those steps you did. You can manage your curls by spraying or running your fingers through them with a cream. You can also put a hair mask on at night time, and wear a hair cap. I’ve used Aussie products before and Horse tail that work really well too. Thanks for sharing your hair journey!

I'm in my 60's and still haven't mastered my curly hair and finding a hair stylist who does it well has been just as hard a struggle as me dealing with it.
I don't think my curls can do what I see other women with curly hair doing the "curly hair thing" can do. Theirs is gorgeous and mine- the curls and bends are just all over the place some are ringlets and others are just bends.
With that brush you're using I've seen some women take out rows so they get a different size curl. I haven't tried it but, you're into experimenting now so look into that.
I'm going to get some hair oil! That was brilliant for getting out the crunch and adding moisture.
I have gone to a pixie which my removes most the curls or a Bob that I blow out all the time.

Hi Lily, I’m by no means a curly hair expert and, like you, only embraced my curly hair in adulthood. For me, it helps to do the hair cream + gel when my hair isn’t completely wet. I normally wrap my towel around my hair (no rubbing as I find that is the main cause for frizz for me) while I do some skincare. Then I do the cream + gel and here I don’t do much scrunching or finger curling (I found that I like the shape better when I just leave my hair be). Because I start with damp (rather than wet) hair, it doesn’t take too long for it to dry and I don’t need a hair dryer. I think I use a lot less gel because I only have very little “crisp” hair when it dries and I’m ok leaving those in (as they become less crispy throughout the day anyway) so I skip the oil step at the end.
Not sure how helpful this is, but for me, what actually made a huge difference was to come to the hairdresser with my curly hair and I showed them reference pictures of people who have curly hair with the length/style that I wanted. After this first haircut, I found that the natural shape that my hair dries (with the cream + gel) looks a lot like the reference pictures. This was over a year ago and I haven’t straightened my hair since. My hair is now a lot healthier (retains moisture better and less frizzy), but more importantly with this hairstyle I seem to care a lot less about a little frizz here and there. So for me it’s also definitely been a change in mindset along with the actual hairstyle and care method.
Sending you lots of love on this curly hair journey! Happy to see our generation healing together 😊

I have curly hair. I straightened it for years, but since I started wearing it curly I really love it. I wash and condition and use the wet brush to get the tangles out. I will brush it into the side part at that time. I will spray it with more water if it needs it and I only use an anti frizz gel. I flip my head upside down and run the product through and scrunch it. I let it air dry and I will flip my part from side to side so that I do have volume on the top. I think with curly hair you actually want volume on top and less on the sides to balance things out. I think it takes a little practice and a little time for your hair to develop your curl pattern, but I do think it does suit you.

Hi Lily! I’ve been watching for years and seen all of your curly hair chats but this one felt different, you seem ready to give it a real shot. I think summer is when natural curls truly shine anyway! Some tips from a fellow curly:
    1. Use the denman brush after the product is all in. Look up techniques for twirling hair with the brush, you can do that with the front pieces. Brushing the product through your hair will give you bigger curl clumps AND evenly distribute the product.
    2. After the product is all in, try scrunching the hair with your microfiber towel. It feels counterintuitive, but your curls will be fine and it’ll help with the uncomfortable feeling of air drying.
    3. Part it to the side while it’s soaking wet (after product, before brushing). I use root clips to show my baby hairs what I want them to do lol. Once your hair has dried in a certain part, it won’t go to the other side easily. I also do side part when curly, middle part when straight.
    4. Don’t be afraid of gel on your roots. It’ll help with the frizz.

    Hi Lily
I have been watching for years but have never commented before. I can relate so much. I have curly hair and didn’t know what to do with it so I always had it in a bun. I started wearing my hair curly when I was 24 and it took me about 2 years to figure it out. I tried so many products and methods until I found something that works for me. Also curls need to „learn“ to be curly again when it has been straightened a lot. My curls were wonky and in small clumps in the beginning and got bigger over time. So I think with curly hair it’s a lot of trial and error and it takes a lot of time. This is frustrating but in my opinion so worth it. Now I love my hair and get so many compliments. What I found is that my hair doesn’t like shea butter because it’s too heavy (most Cantu products have it). I don‘t brush my hair (not even when wet), use leave in conditioner and gel and diffuse it on the lowest settings. Thank you for sharing your journey, I really hope you find a routine that works for you so you can fall in love with your curls!

So happy you're trying to wear your curls more. I don't blow dry or straighten my hair during the summer to give my hair a break. I don't think you need that much product and I also think after the product is in use the denman brush to define your curls. And drying it upside down for part of the time will give you the volume you need 👍🏽 don't give up!

Hi Lily, I'm a fellow curly hair girl that have been watching your videos since the begining hehe Thank you so much for sharing this experience with us and being vulnerable about your hair. I can relate to the pain of growing up with curly hair in a time where straight was the beauty standard. I don't follow any curly methods or anything, and I really don't enjoy the wet hair styling method. With time I just found what works for me and for the hair I like my hair to fall (quite similar to you, I don't like too much volume or the curl to come from the root) so I just use a curl creme and air dry it. Just wanted to share that in case it helps you, as I know that all the faff with curly hair just makes it extra hard and it doesn't need to be :)

That brush you used AFTER washing your hair is great, if used properly. I recently came across a reel on IG of a "curly hair girl" using different methods to have more defined curls . One of the methods was running that brush through the hair is small sections AFTER applying the product. So maybe try doing that? Wash the hair, apply the product and brush the hair section by section. Also, (not really sure how to explain this), but when you grab a section and run your brush through, turn the brush over so that most of that section will "rub" agains the back (smooth) side of your brush. No idea if that made sense 🤣🙈 but I tried😃

Hi Lily. Curly hair girl here. I'm 26 and it's taken me 4 years to understand my curls and what works/doesn't work. I find there's a lot of information out there and a lot of products and unfortunately, not everyones advice is going to work for you/your hair/your lifestyle but here are some things I think you could try. Soaking wet hair yes, warm the cream up in your hands before you apply and use 'pray hands' to add the product to your hair before you scrunch and pulsate your fingers. Diffuse your hair in 4 sections, low heat, medium speed and hold it for 3/4 minutes before you then move onto the next section then leave it to air dry when it's 70% dry. (I find the Kevin Murphy Killer Twirls the best product for my hair and can be used on day 3/4 curls too. Still on the hunt for the perfect gel to layer but I found the Boucleme difficult to get along with).

There are so many curly methods its hard to find the one for you - what you want are “curl clumps” which means no stringy curls - I brush hair out straight out in small sections with tension then when it falls give it a shake at the top and encourage a clump to form - and side part at front totally - I used two clips at each side for ages whilst hair getting healthier (so like a half up half down) good luck 👍🏼

Well done you for revisiting your natural hair with an audience. Was this a therapy exercise? You nailed it! A video idea I would like to see is you taking us to a salon that knows how to cut and style curly hair. As you say your cut is for straight hair. What about a cut for curly hair? Or learning from an expert on what to do? You didn’t seem at times to know what to do as your last experience was in the 90s. I think your hair curly makes you look younger and has such personality. I hope you can appreciate the versatility you have in front of you. ❤

If you want more volume and curlier hair, I dry my hair with a Diffusor head over. Than you need a lil bit time, after drying, cauz the curls need to rest and unfold with a good oil.

What I do: Don't use towels, but 100% cotton t shirts to dry, detangle while applying your products using your fingers only. No brushes.(not even with conditioner) and wear a satin dressing gown until most of it air dries. It reduces frizz. I never use a diffuser.

Love the curly hair! I know you’ll probably get loads of tips for your hair and it can feel a bit overwhelming so I hope it doesn’t come across that way. I think with curly hair it’s a little trial and error until you work out what your hair likes and what you like. You’ve said before you have quite fine hair so I’d say you want lighter products. You might not need a curl cream as it can be too heavy. If I’m being honest I’d probably just try like the Bouclem mousse and just use that. You can always add the gel on top (I’d stay away from strong hold due to your hair type) if you feel you need it. Also I know you might not feel like you want volume at the roots but putting the product there will help with frizz.
    Hope this is helpful ❤️

Mate, very similar experiences with curly hair growing up although I now haven't straightened my hair for about 14 years (teenage me would never have believed that I don't think 😂). I once had a hairdresser fib to my mum I had nits because she couldn't be naffed to cut my hair. All I can suggest is a very simple shampoo (I use a olive oil based bar), a moisturising conditioner that works for you, microfiber towel and air dry - but I totally get that the routine that works for everyone is slightly different, so as others have said, it is a journey 😅

Love that you’re trying to embrace the curls 🫶🏻 there’s a few other things you could try 🥰 when putting product in when wet, try the “prayer” method. So hair between hands and smooth your hair down, then you scrunch. But don’t over scrunch!
To combat the wet shoulder problem, try “flopping” your wet curls into a cotton tshirt or Microfibre towel. There’ll be lots of videos of this online! :)
Then with the diffuser, diffuse long and slow as you did on a lower heat! To avoid frizz, you want to turn the blow dryer off in between each section so put the dryer onto the head then turn on, then turn off and move, etc :)
I’m certainly no expert but that’s some things I’ve learned through the years…. Hasten to add I still don’t embrace my hair as much as I would hope to!
    Don’t give up 🥰

Wavy hair girl here, I would recommend running your fingers through your hair with the cream first instead of brushing, and then only scrunching with the gel, not running fingers through. You could use a wide tooth comb as soon as you finish rinsing. The brushing and separating is what makes the sections so small. You can use a microfiber towel after you put in product to help it dry a bit more before diffusing. I hold my hair in the diffuser for a few seconds rather than moving it through the hair quickly. I use a wand iron to tidy up some of the frizzy or straight pieces to finish. I LOVE your curls. I understand your lack of confidence with it and I was the same when I was younger. I would suggest not being so afraid to mix it up between styles, your hair is curly enough that it really won’t make a huge difference to keep straightening it from time to time. ❤
