Glad you said that... 40000 Brits got their asses handed to them by 4000 farmers and converted to gorilla warfare - scorched earth policy ...then the boere decided to opt for the treaty
Not really. Read Packenham's THE BOER WAR. After about a year, the British reversed the depopulation policy of moving Boer civilians into camps and instead left them out on the veldt. Since by that time camp sanitation had greatly improved, guerilla Boers in the field considered their families in British custody to be safe, while the families left on the farms in the veldt were endangered (natives, collapse of economy, food shortages). So the legacy of the camps is a mighty one for Afrikaaners, but AT THE TIME OF THE BOER SURRENDER, THE CAMPS WERE NOT AN ISSUE.

As an Afrikaner ("Boer") the British in 1900 certainly had a bad impact on my ancestry. However, in 2020 I have benefited very much from the British presence in South Africa. Much of the systems (anything from educating to safety standards) were imported from Britain. I speak English relatively fluently (because of the British presence), which allows me to work internationally. I see the Brits and English speaking South Africans as my brothers and NOT my enemy! Long live the British and Afrikaners!! Lets move forward and don't dwell in the past.
Yes, thousand of people were born in South Africa whose first language is English. Most of them did not learn to speak Afrikaans but most or all Afrikaans speaking people can speak English. It was also their way to discriminate against the Afrikaans speaking people. Whatever the case is, we learned to live together with many other native languages around us. I know many English-speaking boere in our area. All good God fearing beautiful people and as friendly as the Afrikaans boere. To save this country we should learn to stand together. EENDRAG MAAK MAG.
Boars were racists. They upheld the apartheid system in SA. Nothing Christian about that. Read the scriptures. Oh sorry, God is on the side of the whites 😂
"faith carried them through all these hardships" Err, no. That would be the guns and knowledge of the terrain that comes from a home field advantage. I very much doubt the baby Jesus materialised on the battlefield to redirect bullets.
Their form of Christianity is disgusting. They believe other races are the beasts of the earth. Nothing blessed about them. One could say their hardships are of their own making.

The real feat of this battle was indeed the brilliant defence strategy of how they placed their cover and fortifications.
The Boer is made of genes from adventurous, big, strong, healthy dutchmen who accepted the challenge of moving to an unknown country. Add to that the French Huguenots who challenged the mighty Catholic church of their time and refused to accept what they considered to be wrong. Add to that the adventurous, strong, courageous, healthy Englishmen and women who became the 1820 settlers and defended a border against a horde. Add to that brave Scottish teachers and missionaries who accepted all the challenges that was pitted against them. Then there were the strong diamond and gold diggers made up of Irish, German, Portuguese and many other nationalities. All these genes combined to make up the modern Boer, a creature who will bend over backwards to keep the peace, but becomes an extremely dangerous being when pushed into a corner, and that is exactly where they are heading right now. You may read the opening paragraphs of Arthur Conan Doyle's "the Great Boer War" to understand this. Conan Doyle had firsthand experience and understood them well. My grandfather Hendrik Lodewyk Ellerman spent the first two years of his life in Irene concentration camp, his mother Marguerite Ellerman (néé du Toit) died in that concentration camp. Despite all this and much more the Boer survives, and will for generations to come.

I'm curious as to what the relations between England and The Netherlands up in Europe was lile duing this time. Were the Boers essentially avandoned by their European counterparts?
Europeans have been fighting each other across the world for hundreds of years. Which is why every country was conquered, often just to stop the other guy from getting it.
Can someone explain to me how can it be claimed that the defeats were the first for Britain since the American revolution, when the British badly lost the early Anglo-Afghan wars starting 50 years earlier?
Well, the chickens have come to roost a century or so later: Brexit is a shambles, the Irish issue is starting to heat up again and the next referendum in wee Scotland will surely get over the line. Farewell British empire!

Age of mythology music 😂😂😂
The boers opposed the british annexation of 1870's from the beginning. They didn't seek the protection of the british but knew they could not fight a two front war.
Great video though.
Really liked the video and the Age of Mythology soundtrack, that quite distracted me xD
I love the use of age of empires music. Seems rather fitting.

Boer States: Britain, please help us, we are being bullied by surrounding africans!
Britain: Annexes Zulu territory
Boer States: You shouldn’t do that!
Smh
I know very little about this, but I imagine that the defeat of the Zulus made Anglo-Boer conflict inevitable, since the Boers no longer relied on Britain for protection from the Africans.
Long live the Dutch Boers in South Africa !!
Boers are a mixture of French Huguenots, Dutch, and German
And we won the Rugby World Cup 2019 - it was Anglo-Boer War 3 and we won!
they got lucky?
Thank you. One of the better summaries I’ve come across
the background music is from Age of Mythology lol
Good summary. Nice to step back and get a quick refresher of events. Always thought the British red uniforms were a crazy idea. They did look good in the Zulu film, but at least they ditched them by WW1.
My great grandmother lost several children in the concentration camp where her family was held. She told her surviving children that what happened in the camps was nothing but genocide.
Same here . We lost so much but we dare not say anything
People like saying its because slavety was abolished, partly yes but mostly because britain forced the Boer to collect the compensation in london which was not an option so they moved.

You gotta love those Boers !
I always wanted to know WHY the British wore bright red!! Great video ⚘
They changed to Khaki colour during the Boer War because of the guerilla tactics used against them
They wore read in the first war (1888), changed to khaki in a bunch of wars in the decade before going to the second Boer War in 1899 wearing standard issue khaki drill. Which turned out to not be warm enough, and was changed to khaki serge during the war.

I love your videos, very amazing and great animation
Nightshark Thank you means a lot
One also has to recognize that the Boers were Chrisian people and their faith carried them through all these hardships; and still does...
Boars were racists. They upheld the apartheid system in SA. Nothing Christian about that. Read the scriptures. Oh sorry, God is on the side of the whites 😂
"faith carried them through all these hardships"
Err, no. That would be the guns and knowledge of the terrain that comes from a home field advantage. I very much doubt the baby Jesus materialised on the battlefield to redirect bullets.
@@teviottilehurst oh you know so little about history young one
Their form of Christianity is disgusting. They believe other races are the beasts of the earth. Nothing blessed about them. One could say their hardships are of their own making.

You did pronounce some stuff wrong like boer (B oo (like book) r)
You left out the bit where the Boers OBLITERATED the Zulu tribe ending the Zulu conquest permanently after 300 Boers decimated more that 15 000 Zulus in a Brilliant defensive strategy at the Battle of Blood River.
Not part of the Boer Wars.
True
@@philipjooste9075 It does however provide context for the effortless British annex of the area east to the Frees State (that used to be the Zulu Kingdom).
If by "brilliant defensive strategy" you mean bring guns while the other side has spears.
@@mconrad8243 300 vs 15000 even with muskets, which by the way wasn't automatic but had to be refilled with gunpowder and then the bullets. 15 000 men can easily overpower 300 even if the 300 had guns, especially guns that weren't automatic. The real feat of this battle was indeed the brilliant defence strategy of how they placed their cover and fortifications.
Thanks for the video. Just a correction, it is General Koos De la Rey, not Kroos.
is this the age of mythology music in the background ?
Yes
Didn't think you'd get SA history correct, great video
Loved the video keep doing what your doing

Age of mythology
The most expensive and most embarrassing war ever for Britain up to this day. Approx 19000 Boers against 500.000 btitish.
I'm curious as to what the relations between England and The Netherlands up in Europe was lile duing this time. Were the Boers essentially avandoned by their European counterparts?
The war was condemned by pretty much everyone but no one was willing to intervene.
