This watch is like my grandfathers axe. We have had it for over 60 years and it still in perfect condition. Only had to change the handle twice and the head once
See!..a little bit of care and 60yo Axe!..We had a Cat last 25years!!..25!..died about 8yo..but still..right next to the skip..there he lay..for 17yrs!..until one of the little sh*ts next door frisbeed him at her dog..soo..no more Frisbee!..er..Cat!..sorry..forgot where I am! lol🤔🙃
I had a SKX with a wrecked 7s26.. I swapped in a NH36 (keeping stock dial / hands..etc) wasn't too hard.. the tip I saw that really helped me.. I was having the devil's own time with the seconds hand. Some watchmaker guy on youtube has a video about hands and he puts a tiny amount of rodico on the tip of the hand-setting tool and picking the seconds hands up with it and then positioning the seconds hand that way.. after 20minutes of frustration got it on the 1st go with the rodico on tip of setting tool approach... stem wasn't too bad.. All in all very happy to have my SKX009 running again, keeping great time as well.
Looks amazing! I'm usually a firm "stock condition" believer, but this looks fun and well executed. The orange minute hand really pops! Now a dial with applied indices would rock.
NH36 is the best and only mod neccesary for the skx period. I like the original look of the skx, so I only changed the movement and the NH36 I ordered is so accurate, it's spot on! It's on freaking 0! Maximum +- 1 sec!!! Thanks for the great video 👌
Honestly, the movement swap is the part I was most keen to see you do. I put a strapcode angus jubilee on my skx007 and while it has some chunk to it (I like the chunk) it's not so big that it mismatches the case, in the event anyone is curious. I like what you did, Jody! It's not the handset choice I would have made, but mods are for the wearer, after all. Many thanks for showing the whole distance of the project.
Perfectly aligned chapter ring and bezel. You’ve betrayed the spirit of the SKX: unsubscribed. Seriously, great job - massive improvement and looks fantastic. You should go into business.
The best Seiko mod video I've ever seen. It looks systematic with confident. I have most of the tools, a double dome sapphire, an original hardlex, aftermarket/original chapter rings, a Knurled Bezel Coin from Dagazwatch with Black GMT and Blue Titanium Bezel Insert, leather and Z22 rubber straps, and also 2 SKX-es but still don't have enough courage for real modding yet. The only mod that i i've already done was swapping the straps. After seeing this video, my confidence was boosted. Thx.
You know, I do love it when the popularity of a product becomes so large that you don't even need OEM parts to build a better product and a similar price point.
I’ve been planning the exact same mods without the movement change. Ceramic diver lume insert, new chunkier brushed steel bezel, double dome sapphire glass, and Merc hands. I went with the chunkier Rolex type strap though. Brilliant video. Thank you, and once again, just through approach, variety and your integrity and knowledge, you’re proving why you’re one of the best watch channels online.
Jody.......Great video. Following your lead, I modded my SKX013. New sapphire crystal, new bezel insert (haven’t received yet), new hands. Things went pretty well; only problem was I lost new second hand. Had hell of a time getting installed, finally flew off into cosmos somewhere. Finally got old hand put on. Other issue was, didn’t clean case well enough and have dust particle on face. Will clean off when new bezel insert arrives. Gonna have to buy another second hand and put on. Was lot of fun doing mod and not nearly as difficult as anticipated. Thanks a million for instruction and motivation. Great channel. Keep up good work.
I skipped this vid last week because I don’t have a Seiko. Then this afternoon happened. A “new to me” SKX007 is on its way to my mailbox. Now I’ll watch all the Seiko vids. Cheers.
Absolutely loved this. I had an skx I intended to mod like this, but between work and fixing my shit commodore I just couldn't get the time. I do stuff like this all the time at work repairing orthopedic components. Keep up the good videos, throughly enjoying your stuff
WOW that has got to be THE BEST SKX MOD VIDEO...EVER! Best I have ever seen anyway and I have seen a few, not only that but good choices for all parts as well. End result spot on Jody, take a bow mate you deserve it. I LOVE my SKX007 and always worry when someone does a mod which almost takes away what makes the SKX so special. However no such fear here. Perhaps I’m gushing a little too much here, but what you have created looks every bit as good as any very high end diver including that there Submariner thingy? Before watching this I was very happy with mine, now I want that one. Could not understand why people wanted to mod it, that’s because everyone else goes way over the top. The bracelet worried me, the hands did the same but I should not have worried at all, as it came out perfect. 😃
A cracking job, Jody! I did the ceramic insert and double dome sapphire, but have decided to hang off a wee bit for the nh36, but, who knows, one day. So far I’ve swum and snorkelled quite deep on both sides of the Atlantic, off the Fife coast at Elie and off the west coast near Oban and it’s not leaked so far, but one day I must try and get the hand winding and hacking movement to finish the job. You’ve inspired me to have a go, thanks for another wonderful video, cheers, Rob, from the East Neuk.
Believe it or not, I've actually put in a set of hands on a watch with my bare fingers. (It was a cheap watch, I didn't really care if it got ruined, and was pleasantly surprised that it didn't. I wasn't actually modding it, the hands had come off.) It can be done, and it's not that horrible, the job just requires patience and you have to remember to do it in order.
Great video as always, end result looks really good. I bought my SKX thinking I would mod it, but since then I decided to keep it standard and just put the money towards more watches instead lol.
You can do it bud !!! I’m rebuilding 8 NH35’s right now .... After a time or 2 , you could rebuild the entire movement with just 2x’s magnification , good tweezers , and a modified toothpick
Slightly unrelated but I just bought a Cadisen watch containing the NH36 movement thanks to your video. Very informative channel! Eventually I hope to get a nice Seiko like this.
Such a great mod. The watch looks great. I wouldn't worry about the blue, I think it works really well in a subtle way. Great video. Great final product. Thanks for sharing
just listened to this mod vid and enjoyed it and your soothing scottish accent we need more scottish narrators , unlike most scots who tend to not like hearing their accent ,which im not one of I love my scottish accent . thank you and lang mae yer lum reek .regards from glasgow .
Love your videos mate. Always excellent content and production value. Keep up the great work!! I started getting into modding recently and I'm really having a blast. I just finished my first proper mod of an Invicta 8926OB. Installed a Dagaz Milsub dial and hands, proper bezel insert with correct Rolex font, did the logo removal & re-polish thing, installed a nice sapphire crystal with 2.5x mag cyclops and a SEL oyster bracelet from an Invicta 9937 (fully brushed/logo removed). What a great everyday watch. The NH36 is the perfect movement for this work. I'll forego the hi-beat value and a little decoration for durability and reliability every day. Next project is my trusty old SKX007. Time for an engine swap and an upgraded look. Thanks for the tips and inspiration!! Merry Christmas & a Happy New Year!
I did a very similar mod myself with a Seiko 5 (SNK 809). I fitted the dial and hands from an SKX. Later, I went back in and replaced the movement with an NH36. It's very satisfying to have a somewhat unique piece that you've created yourself. It's definitely a "Trigger's broom". That saying is a new one on me, but I instantly got the reference. :-)
i have a tip for you. find or buy a cheap bicycle innertube and cut few square pieces out of it. use these squares to protect the saphyr when you install them. it works super well with the bezel. put the rubber around the tip of the tool and push. it will pop nicely with the best protection. rubber is thick enough.
"Trigger's broom" for our non British friends, is a reference to a character on an English TV show called Only Fools and Horses. The joke is that Trigger says he has been using the same broom for 20 years... but it's had 17 new heads and 14 new handles.
Great job Jodi! You did your research and prepared on exactly what to do and it all looked like it went pretty smoothly! I suggest you lubricate the back and crown gaskets with some watch lubricant. Not necessary to the process, but it's a quick thing and helps with the longevity of the gaskets.
Well I broke the original movement in my SKX007, not sure how the hell I managed that, but using your instructions I swapped it for an NH36. Boom! First mod was the big one, but it worked and I'm well happy. Now I'm going to have to get a nicer bezel insert. 😁
You just become the very coolest watch channel on UA-cam in my eyes just by wearing that shirt🔥nice vid mate am new to watches and really enjoy your insights an mods
Fun and amazing to watch. Hilarious as always... And believe if or not, I did the same hands and bezel on mine 3 years ago hunting for a squale mod and I love it... Now getting that movement and crystal changed ASAP. Looks amazing.
My current on the wrist watch is a 007 ,nh34 GMT, in a titanium case with 24 hour bezel on a silicone strap. Sun burst orange dial makes watch face pop.
I love making my own mods so I have my watches personalised for my own taste with a kind of unique piece... and watching your video it seems so easy for you (I know it is not always), congrats!
Great job mate! I recently did a full custom SKX NH36 build using a Crystaltimes PVD case with a DD sapphire/black ceramic yachtmaster bezel combo. A fun project with surprisingly great results.
Great video sir! The speed of the video was perfect and explanation was awesome! I’ve been hesitant of doing my own mod, but I, certain I can accomplish this now! Thanks
Very impressive and clearly narrated mod video, really enjoyed watching this and top marks for what looks like a beautifully upgraded SKX. FYI, I took the sneaky short cut and bought a Sharkey SKX from wr watches, which has sapphire, nh36 and as a true nod to Seiko, an ever so slightly misaligned chapter ring. I love it.
Was waiting for this video. I thought replacing the hands would be the trickiest part but, after seeing this, maybe not. Will try this mod, especially now that CT Horology makes signed lumed crowns for the skx. Really good video, well done.
Thanks for sharing Jody, that was a fantastic vid! Been tempted to mod an SKX many times myself. The coin edge bezel and ceramic insert look great. Great work mate!
Wow, that is one of the best modding videos I have ever seen. I really appreciate that you included the movement swap. I keep thinking of doing that on my SNZH53, and I wanted to keep the arabic date wheel, so that was a nice detail to put in as well.
Looks great! I love the blue anti reflective coating. I put a domed blue ar sapphire on my budget silver snkk87 and I think it looks like a million bucks! A black dial really makes the ar coating stand out
Jody, It's way easier to use your blue-tac or rodico instead of tweezers to pick up and place the hands without damaging them. With the pointer end of the watch hand stuck to the blue-tac, align it over the hub whist using the tool with your other hand to press it down.
This was a great video and a great mod to boot! And who would possibly imagine that you could get an "Only Fools And Horses" reference into a watch channel video from Australia! Sublime!
I did something very similar with my SKX007: NH36, Strapcode jubilee, ceramic bezel insert and sapphire domed crystal. I kept the original hands, with their unbeatable lume, and used black day and date wheels. I think that looks a good deal better than the white wheels. You need to be a bit careful with the crystal to ensure it matches the level of the thicker bezel insert. I found a 1.5mm crystal was just right. Just how it should have been made in the first place!
Oooh! That's nice. Good Job Jody! You are a brave man. I wouldn't attempt switching the hands or shortening the crown stem myself. That seems too daunting for me but you did a great job. Congrats!!
It looks fantastic Jody! Now one of the nicest SKX's I have ever seen. As always from you, this a beautifully produced video. Well done all round, sir!
I love the way it looks now. I love the blue AR coating actually. I also love the domed crystal and the movement upgrade. I never recommend SKX over something like an Orient because of that super outdated movement.
I think it looks great with the blue AR coating but blue is my favourite colour. I would have maybe put blue hands or just the second hand. The orange still looks great too with the black face and bezel.....Good job..love your channel .
Great job Jodi, I'm a new subscriber and I have to admit I've been watching most of your videos and I've already ordered two watches this week. I guess I should thank you? As my English grandmother would say, bugger!
Very nice mod and well explained too.I like what the hands do for the look of the watch. I think I would've kept the Kanji date wheel, I have a soft spot for that particular feature.
This watch is like my grandfathers axe. We have had it for over 60 years and it still in perfect condition. Only had to change the handle twice and the head once

I like how the ar coating on the crystal makes the chapter ring look blue 👍🏻 (17:18)
That confused the hell out of me!
Jared me too! I was like ‘wait, he didn’t mention the chapter ring’ lol
Me too. Very nice.
I agree the orange really looks great with the blue effect chapter ring
Can we get the MSKX anywhere in Australia easy to get come bye
Looks amazing! I'm usually a firm "stock condition" believer, but this looks fun and well executed. The orange minute hand really pops! Now a dial with applied indices would rock.

Agreed on hand pressing tools. I find I have a lot more control with these compared to a spring loaded tool.
After seeing this, I might switch to hand pushers, too. Spring loaded press is kind of inaccurate.
I absolutely love this mod. The original style of the Skx is relatively the same yet it looks like a million bucks.
I love that there’s not a speck of dust. I can’t put a case on my phone without fouling it with dust particles. Nice job!

Biggest problem with modding a SIX is sourcing a broken one, as good used ones are holding their value.
Very nice mod Jody!😀
Looks great, Jody. Well done! Even just a sapphire really dresses up any SKX. I'd happily wear this little fella.
This looks beautiful, i think there should be an update of the SKX line with these same specs, and maybe some different dial colors. Great job sir.
i have a tip for you. find or buy a cheap bicycle innertube and cut few square pieces out of it. use these squares to protect the saphyr when you install them. it works super well with the bezel. put the rubber around the tip of the tool and push. it will pop nicely with the best protection. rubber is thick enough.

Hi Jody, a big HELLO from Germany. What a great Vid. Now the SKX is a real beauty, couldn't be better. Very well done. Respect.

Thank you for sharing this video. Vids like these are helping build my confidence to do my first from-the-ground-up build.
What an improvement, it looks amazing...time to develop you own MICRO BRAND JODY.
Absolutely stunning results mate. Quality video that gives me faith I can attempt a crystal replacement mod myself, Cheers mate.
I think it looks great with the blue AR coating but blue is my favourite colour. I would have maybe put blue hands or just the second hand. The orange still looks great too with the black face and bezel.....Good job..love your channel .
I just realized why you chose orange. To match the orange print.
Great job Jodi, I'm a new subscriber and I have to admit I've been watching most of your videos and I've already ordered two watches this week. I guess I should thank you? As my English grandmother would say, bugger!
Great work there! Love the Orange minute hand !!
I have all the bits and have watched this for the 4th time. I am about to do it all. Wish me luck....
Congratulations on the SKX mod build Jody. The watch looks cracking👍👏
Very nice mod and well explained too.I like what the hands do for the look of the watch. I think I would've kept the Kanji date wheel, I have a soft spot for that particular feature.
I‘m a happy owner of a 013 with NH 36, sapphire crystal and ceramic bezel. Very good.
Jody, great job. I like your choice of hands as well. Makes it look more like a dive watch. Amazing job, good on ya!
