  • This week I show you how I shoot a time-lapse sequence. I'll show you what you need, and how to go about doing it. Then next week I'll show you how to bring all the photographs together into a sequence.
    To edit these into a video sequence, I go through the editing process in this video: • Timelapse editing

    On Canon you can unscrew the lens a bit and it will lose the electric connection and won't touch the aperature. I can't guarantee it won't cause problems, but it shouldn't. To hold the aperature you will have to hold the DOF preview button before unscrewing. Good video, thanks. Your shot at 5:37 is amazing btw.

      You have a few different options depending on your budget. I've used the samyang 14mm as a budget lens and that is really good but does have a bit of distortion towards the edges. The laowa 15mm F2 is a fantastic lens but is a bit more expensive.
      If you'd like a slightly narrower field of view then try either the 24mm samyang, the batis 25mm or the Sony gm 24mm.
      They all do a fantastic job. I hope that helps. 👍

      Yes, you can use an intervalometer with the RX100iii ... I found with my RX100ii that the buffer in the camera did struggle when I set it to 1 image a second. Once I had the interval at 3 seconds it was ok. Just something to be aware of before setting it all up.

    Hi Mike, great videos. I had been looking around for a while now for how to go about a Timelapse with my RX100 VI and I've purchased that intervalometer you suggested so thanks for that. You mentioned it being important to use an ND filter to get the shutter speed down. If I was shooting an evening sky going to sunset and then a night sky I presume I wouldn't want an ND filter as it would be too dark? Thanks again

    • @mikesphotography
      @mikesphotography  5 років тому +1

      No worries, I’m glad I could help.
      An Nd filter will work for a timelapse with a constant exposure value so for a day to night timelapse like you said, it’s better to not have one fitted. 😁👍
      Also make sure you have a really fast sd card so the buffer offloads quickly. My rx100ii (I got the really old one) struggles unless I put a super fast card in it.
      👍

    • @macartanmcquaid22
      @macartanmcquaid22 5 років тому +1

      @@mikesphotography Thanks Mike... As it was becoming dark would I need to start lowering the shutter speed? I'm not sure if that is even possible when doing it manually...

    • @mikesphotography
      @mikesphotography  5 років тому +1

      There’s a few ways you can do it...you can adjust it manually, you can leave it on auto or have it in say aperture priority and let the shutter speed lengthen up to 30 seconds...the only problem is you’ll have to adjust the interval as the exposure time lengthens...it is a pretty tricky timelapse to pull off...if you search for “day to night timelapse” or “the holy grape of timelapses” you’ll find a lot on the subject...the trick is getting rid of the steps your camera will produce as the shutterspeed changes...the software LRtimelapse helps...but if you shoot a sequence over 400 shots, you’ll have to get the paid version which is a little pricey.
      Good luck with it and let me know how you get on. 👍

    • @macartanmcquaid22
      @macartanmcquaid22 5 років тому +1

      I was thinking it was going to be tricky, even without knowing about holy grapes 🤣 I will have a good read about day to night Timelapse and see what I can figure out. I have the arsenal camera remote, although not compatible with the RX100, does offer a Timelapse option. I might have a play using it also with the Sony a5000 or my Nikon D3200 or the sisters D90 and see if it has this "holy grail" option within the timelapse menu. Thanks again for all the pointers 👍🏻

    • @mikesphotography
      @mikesphotography  6 років тому +1

      Hey man, I’m good thanks and thanks for the support, I’m glad my videos are helping!
      The Sony lenses are expensive but they are very good quality. I haven’t regretted any of the Sony lenses I have.
      A mounted lens will not affect the quality as long as the lens itself is good quality. The L-series lenses from canon work really well with the sigma MC-11 adapter.
      There is no timelapse function so you would have to buy an intervalometer and process timelpases on a computer after shooting a sequence of photos. It’s annoying but this way always gives me the best quality timelapses no matter which camera I use.
      I hope that helps. 👍

    • @mikesphotography
      @mikesphotography  5 років тому +1

      No worries Aziz.
      Say with my f2 25mm on the a7ii, I’d be shooting at f2 iso 1000 with a shutterspeed between 4-15seconds. I’d then set the interval to about 2 seconds on the longer exposures and about 1 second on the shorter ones. It also depends on how fast your memory card is and how big the buffer is in your camera.

    • @mikesphotography

      The timelapse modes tend to be just a built in intervalometer within the camera, so ono need for an external intervalometer in that instance. 👍

    • @Eugene2ndW
      @Eugene2ndW 2 роки тому

      @@mikesphotography Thanks, Mike. But does the external activate the T7i while in the movive mode, not necessarily for time lapse

    • @mikesphotography
      @mikesphotography  2 роки тому

      If you're using an external intervalometer, you need to set the camera to single shot and manual mode, with manual focus. This will get you a series of stills to stitch together into a timelapse sequence.
      If you have it set to movie mode, it will just start and stop video recording everytime the intervalometer activates the shutter.

    How do you determine the Aperture? Just set it accordingly to the scene? Or do you have a preferred Aperture?

    • @mikesphotography
      @mikesphotography  3 роки тому

      It all depends on your other two settings, shutter speed and iso. I tend to set the aperture to about f8-f11 so I get a lot in focus in my timelapse, then set the iso to 100 and then set the shutter speed to get a good exposure.

    • @mikesphotography
      @mikesphotography  Рік тому

      The best bet is to test different shutter speeds to see what you like the most.
      If you are short of time, you can use a faster shutter speed, but it will give a more stuttery look.
      I just take the interval time and halve it for my shutter speed and that seems to work ok.

    • @mikesphotography
      @mikesphotography  3 роки тому +1

      This is the problem with doing a timelapse of a sunrise, the light is changing all of the time. What camera did you shoot it with?
      One way you can do it is to shoot in aperture or shutter priority and then even out the exposure jumps with a program called LRtimelapse.

    • @mikesphotography

      You can do it with or without the Nd...the problem with using an Nd is that your iso levels will be super high before the sun has risen...but if you don't use an Nd, the movement in your timelapse might be a bit jittery after the sunrise.
      The best bet would be to go and try out both so you can see which one you prefer. 👍

Also I used PhotoPills that says in the Timelapse feature that I would get 1,30 sec footage at 4 sec interval, 24 fps (used 24 fps in Premiere) in 2h 24 min. I only got around 50 sec? Best, Pascal

Your shorter length timelapse would also suggest this has happened.
