  • As I have run into fellow wine lovers, I hear about many wines that tends to be brought up as "my favorite" or "always a solid choice." Decoy has been a name that I have heard many times but is always outside of my $15 price range. Well, I'm bending the rules today and sold off some plasma to get those extra $3. Here is are my thoughts on the 2016 Decoy Cabernet Sauvignon.
    ►Vintage: 2016
    ►Varietal: Cabernet Sauvignon
    ►Region: Sonoma, California
    ►ABV: 13.9%
    ►Price: $18

I think Decoy is a fantastic brand. I’m not an every day wine drinker, but when I buy wine it’s Decoy. I had Duckhorn in the past and for me they are arguably the best winemaker in The U.S. but I’m not spending 50-100 on a bottle of wine lmao.. not when I can get the best bourbon my home state of Kentucky has to offer at the same price. But I’ll get a bottle of Decoy Cabernet and it’s world class

Decoy Cabernet Sauvignon is one of the wines that I buy to bring to parties if I'm not sure if folks like wine or not. It's consistently good and easy to find. I've never had a Duckhorn but it's on my list of "splurge" wines to try. I hear you on the Bourbon though. From time to time, I too would prefer to spend money on a good Bourbon or Rye over a super expensive bottle of wine.

Hey, Stuart ! So glad to see you did a review on Decoy wine as it is the most expensive wine at the local Cash Saver here in OKC, and I've been wondering just how good it really is (didn't want to spend the $20 is costs !). Still loving my Winking Owl brand wine from Aldis, though. At only $3 a bottle it is by far the best bang for your buck. Looking forward to a review from you on Winking Owl someday if the Aldis near you ever opens up !! Have a wonderful 4th !!

I totally get that feeling of not wanting to splurge in case something is bad so I'm glad that I could help! I really wish the Aldi they planned in my city would open up soon. I'm very interested to try some stuff that folks are recommending there.

I tried either the 2018 or 2019 Decoy Cab and thought it was a generation X type red loaded with fruit forwardness which I HATE in a Cab. If I could recommend an awesome CAb that runs around $20 it would be the 2017 Buck Shack Cab (not the one in Bourbon).

Thanks! I was really bad when I first got into wine. What you see is 8 years of practice in trying to pick stuff out. Even now, I'm not as good as some people I do practice tasting with. Picking out the different flowers, certain off-veg (tomato for example) can still be pretty difficult for me. There are some people that are really natural at it, but I have to practice. However, if I can do it, then anyone can with enough practice.

I don't know now a days. I saw a video the other day where some winery was able to make a clean process that gives wine a few years of oxidative characteristic after a few weeks. I'd love to start getting some more complex wines sooner. Have fun on your trip!

Since I'm not familiar with any specific Canadian wine retailers and can't check which wineries are in stock, I'm going to give you a few areas and varietals to try since they can probably be found around your price point.
      South America
-Chile: Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenere, and Pinot Noir
      -Argentina: Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon
      Europe
-France: Right (Merlot dominant) or left (Cabernet Sauvignon dominant) *Bordeaux blends, Gamay (Beaujolais), Southern Rhone Blends (Grenache/Syrah/Mourvedre) (*Bordeaux can be pricey, but there are still some good introductions to the area around your price point.)
      -Portugal: Red blends, Touriga Nacional
-Spain: Rioja blends, Tempranillo, Garnacha, Bobal
-Italy: Chianti, Chianti Classico, Primitivo, IGT wines, Super Tuscans, Nero D'Avola
      Oceania
      -Australia: Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon
      -New Zealand: Merlot, Pinot Noir
      United States
-Washington: Walla Walla, Yakima, Columbia Valley reds (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir)
-Oregon: Willamette Valley (Mostly Merlot or Pinot Noir)
-California: North Coast reds (Mostly Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon)
      I hope this helps.

So, I have not been a fan of the last few releases of major California Cab producers at the sub-$20 for 3 or so years. I don't think that California Cabernet has the balance I like compared to Washington, South America, and France. However, this is a Cab that I would buy again because it's not bad but I feel like it has less "off the shelf" complexity than something like the Educated Guess Cabernet. I know a ton of folks that love it, so it's worth a try at the minimum.

Dehydration and loss of electrolytes is what causes hangovers. However, some people don't detect the alcohol in wine and can drink more than they thought they did, which can lead to some pretty bad headaches in the morning. I have a friend like that and he gave up wine for whiskey.
