  • This is my review of the Xtreme Signal Long Range UHF Antenna model HDB91X. This is virtually the same antenna marketed under Stellar Labs and Antennas Direct as the 91XG. It runs about $65 and claims to pick up reception within a 70 mile range. How well does it work?

      I have the Clearstream 91XG yagi antenna. I know it’s it’s similar to the that model but I was wondering if you can do a video on the one by ANTENNAS DIRECT. It is UHF only but I’m getting a local low-powered VHF channel with it.

    I own an antennas direct 91-XG. I am 45 miles from the transmitter, edge1 on all UHF stations. All stations came in fine, except were unstable in VERY windy or thunderstorm conditions. I then purchased ANOTHER 91-XG, took the middle boom section from it, and added it to the one on my roof. That did the trick and stablilized my signal in all weather conditions. I also pick up Columbia Missouri at night most times with this antenna at 73 miles from the transmitter.

      Back in 1990 during the analogue days , I’d fitted a mere 18 element Yagi type Ariel to pick up a high powered mast of 250kw 54 miles away because that was regarded as High Gain . Although it was the correct type for uhf channels 54 to 68 , out of the 4 stations being sent , only those on 54 and 58 were good whereas 61 was grainy and 67 unwatchable. Ironically a guy in the neighbouring village had a monster x beam pointing towards same direction & was probably more up to the task. You chaps appear to have a huge choice of stations compared to us in England . 👍

      Would u say that it was definitely worth it adding the additional section? Thinking of doing the same as they are only $39 currently on Amazon. Have mine in attic with pre amp. Does pretty well most of time but would still like more power/gain.

    Thanks for reviewing this antenna. We wanted to eliminate a cable box in a seldom used bedroom and bought this model locally. We installed it in an attic hoping to pick up signals from towers about 40 miles out. My brother and I installed the antenna and ran the RG6 to the TV. Scanning only gave us 9 channels (actually 2 channels and their sub channels) but both were H-VHF channels. No UHF channels at all! Since your review clearly states this is a UHF antenna we were more than a little confused. After a couple of days of scratching our heads and after taking a compass up in the attic we got the same results. Finally digging through the TV menus there was a setting for the coax input to switch from either a cable box/antenna. After a significant duh.... moment a rescan found 82 channels including the H-VHF channels. Your review convinced us that the antenna was not the problem. Turns out we were the problem. Thank you for your review.

    Really glad to see you finally review this antenna. After doing a ton of research I purchased this antenna for my cabin in northern WI 5 years ago. It is on a rotator, and paired it with a winegard pre amp along with a distribution amp because it is split off to 4 rooms. My setup works great. I am able to pull in reliable signals from 50-70 miles away. After 5 years of being exposed to the elements the antenna has held up well. I did need to reattach the lower signal collector metal grid due to the mount becoming loose. Other than that it has performed great.

    I have the Xtreme Signal HDB91 ....and you're right about everything! Yes it does have more plastic than I'd want for outside but I keep mine in an upstairs bedroom and it's worked terrific. Unlike the DB8e it's been far superb at keeping out unwanted signals from jets, cell phones and 2 nearby ham radio operators. Adding an old VHF rabbit ear and a combiner, I use a pre-amp to shove the signal 40-ft to the garage to a CM 3414 (4 way amplified distributor). It's so good I'm even powering my next door neighbor's TV.

    Have used this antenna for 5 years and it is a performer. No problem with the quality build its still in great shape. I'm 25 miles away from 2 vhf channels and it picks up both of them with ease. I also use a preamp. One thing I have found out is it will pick up the vhf channels strongest if the antenna is turned in the opposite direction of the towers but I have no issues with it turned towards them. This is a high gain UHF antenna and for the price you can't beat it.

    Thanks for this review. I live about 40 miles from the Charlotte, NC TV towers, which just happens to broadcast only UHF channels. This antenna receives UHF stations like no other antenna I tested in my attic. My omni-directional antenna (which I believe is set up mostly for VHF stations) was getting only CBS and FOX very poorly. This antenna easily got all 57 stations in my area while in my attic, while using an unpowered 3-way splitter. This was probably the best recommendation I got on UA-cam. Thanks for the educational content. Wouldn't have known the difference between UHF and VHF otherwise.

    Great Video. I bought one of these antennas. I went with the Stellar Labs 30-2370 UHF Yagi. It was on sale for $33 shipped on Newark. Best antenna I've tried for my area so far.
    I'm getting ready to comparing it to a Channel Master 4228HD I bought used. A quick test in the front yard showed the UHF Yagi did better for me. It wasn't a proper side by side test though.
    I'm also tempted to buy one of those cheap VHF Yagi antennas just for kicks. A neighbor did give me an old damaged VHF antenna. The thing is huge (10 foot). I need to fix it and give it a try.

    One thing I think you should mention, to give people a more complete picture, is that the high gain from this antenna comes at a price. It's more directional than most, and therefore requires more precise aiming. If your transmitters are not all in the same direction, and by same I mean within a few degrees of the mean, this antenna may not see them at all. A rotor may be required. This is but one of the many reasons that, when it comes to antennas, one size does not fit all.

The Channel Master 4251 newer version and the Antennacraft Super G 1483 (the stacked Hooverman version) were the best you could buy. Now you have to give your right arm to find them if you can. 91XG might (likely) be a better build, but one of the 2 best UHF antennas on the market paired with the Stellar Labs VHF antenna at the end of this clip is all you need, I ended up swapping out with the Antennas Direct db8e as it's less directional but it's debatable if its better.

    This highly directional antenna is similar to designs used in Europe and Asia where lower power television broadcasts originate from a central single structure, and not scattered around from different broadcast points as found in the United States and Canada. It is marketed as a Yagi antenna, but it isn't a true Yagi-Uda but rather a modified hybrid design. Like a Yagi, its directors use parasitic end fired arrays to increase gain and directivity. But unlike the Yagi which is narrow band, this antenna modifies its element spacing and length to detune the antenna and consequently widens the antenna's bandwidth. Unless you receive television signals from a single point, you will need a rotator.

I never could get a consistent signal with it. I installed this Xtreme Signal HDB91X in April 2020. No pre-amp or anything and it pulls a much stronger signal compared to the CM-4228HD. It's been a year and it is still working great. No drop outs. Signal indicator always says it's a "strong" signal. The signal indicator for the CM-4228HD would always read "moderate." If you are trying to receive particular long distance or out of area tv signals is there a danger that you may also pick up unwanted signals from other stations on the same or adjacent frequencies that may spoil your reception. Sometimes too much signal can be worse than too little and when planning tv transmitters and choosing frquencies the optimum reception range does not take into account conflicting signals that should not really be receivable in your location.

    Nice video. Looks like the next video will be the Stellar labs VHF antenna that I added to my clearstream 2max. I could sometimes pull in Grand Rapids VHF channel 8 and VHF Channel 7 in Kalamazoo but only during times of tropospheric ducting. It did however solve the problem I had with WJRT 12 in Flint and can get it constantly now. I did a review too, but can't wait to hear yours. I still prefer the clearstream 2 max as I can get signals from both sides of the antenna verses the yagi styles that are directional. Since Lansing MI is between Grand Rapids and Flint I like that I can get from both front and back.

    I don't think you've done a review of the CM-3671. Sometimes it's listed as discontinued, but it's been available, either new or NOS, for several years, off and on. Although the gain on UHF and VHF are lower than say the HDB91X and the Stellar Labs deep fringe (2476?) VHF-hi antenna, these 3671s also have lo-vhf and are over 14' in length, one of the largest consumer antennas out there. I had one setup in the analog days and briefly in the transition to digital period, but It'd be interesting to compare this to the combo UHF Xtreme Antenna/VHF Stellar Labs setup. I believe that I personally only have four VHF stations available in two directions, including only one VHF-lo (low-powered) station. The VHF-lo station is just a local weather/news station that seems to be run by a university. So, it's insignificant, but if future stations start turning to VHF, especially VHF-lo, because of cell phone communications, people are probably going to have to start installing larger antennas.

    I bought one of these antennas. I live about 55 miles east of Abilene TX all the channels there are UHF. We have several ridges between. Antennaweb shows no channels in our area. I mounted this on a 10 foot mast on my roof and pointed towards Abilene. I thought there were only 8 channels in Abilene there are 11. With this antenna I have all 11 channels from Abilene.

    The test to compare antennas is cool to know , but keep in mind every day has different weather conditions and atmospheric conditions wich can make a antenna better or not as good. And also note some antennas work different with boosters . so im thinking if the test is close then the winner could actually be the looser.

I don't have a picture right now, I won't be able to get one till I get back up there once the weather get's better, the cabin is way deep in the Quehanna Wild Area. I originally had one of these and by adding the second one, it did get me twice the number of channels, those are the ones that get spotty between 11:00am and 5:00pm now, they usually work fine outside of that timeframe of the days.

    I enjoy your videos. When you talk about a physically large antenna like this one, would you discuss wind resistance and the proper tower and guying for it. Where I live in Ohio, it is not unusual to have wind gusts of up to 60 mph. While the smaller antennas usually don't present to much of a torque issue (the cheap plastic ones break off) That one is a bit concerning.

    Have you ever tested swr on TV antennas to see where they resonate? Antenna analyzers are available for amateur radio equipment but take a 50 ohm impedance. TV antennas are 75 ohms. Why don't TV antennas have published SWR charts the way ham radio and commercial two way radio antennas do?

    • @ivobrick7401
      @ivobrick7401 3 роки тому

      They have it, but only 1/3rd - more expensive and more robust like Emme Emesse or Vaten or Color. Atleast here in EU.

    • @BrekMartin
      @BrekMartin 3 роки тому

      Because it’s much less important. Your TV won’t be damaged due to impedance mismatch, and VSWR doesn’t have anything to do with resonance. An antenna analyser will only tell you if you are losing power due to mismatch reflections. You can tune just about anything to present good VSWR.

    Why does my tv get a channel for a few secs then drops out ? And do networks throttle signal strenghts like right before a game or a race ? Also i get over 20 home shopping channels clear as a whistle 24/7/365 ! I use an amplified ant with a signal strength booster about 30 ft high - closest stations are between 28 miles and 50 ! I can get some as far as 200 on a clear night ? Maybe i have to go higher ?

    • @AntennaMan
      @AntennaMan  3 роки тому

      The stations are not throttling the signal. Your problem is your antenna isn't strong enough. You are just barely getting the signal to the point if anything affects it (like atmospheric changes) you lose the signal. Many antennas with built in amplifiers are junk. If you want your reception problems solved consider a custom antenna recommendation from me at the link below: antennamanpa.com/antenna-recommendations.html
