  • In this video I review the updated version of the Range Xperts XPS-1500 "Insane Gain" long range outdoor antenna with VHF kit. It's about half the cost of other long range antennas and claims a 100 mile range. Updates include UHF elements redesigned for repack frequencies, a direct 75ohm connection, and two year warranty. How well does it work?

    Ok, let me give you an honest world review. I put this Antenna on my mom's house in Davison, mi. All was going fine. She pulled in 35 channels, not a lot but good enough. Then a week ago, there was a bad storm with softball size hail. You do the math. I wish I could add a pic of what it looks like now. But long story short, she still has all her channels. It took a real beating but still works just fine.

    This excellent antenna, with the VHF add-on, was installed in summer, 2023, for our condo building in West Los Angeles.
    All our stations transmit from Mt. Wilson, about 25 miles away, but behind a hill from us.
    A scan picks up 120 channels, the only one missed being ch. 8, a low power real VHF channel.
    The antenna is on a short mast, just a foot above a Spanish tile roof, so it's unaffected by strong winds even without guy wires.
    The only downside is that you need a nut driver to avoid sore fingers when putting it together.

      Here’s the missing info: The Range Xperts XPS-1500 outperformed the Televes DATBOSS LR Mix in signal strength by an average of 9.3%. It bested the Televes model for 4/5 stations, and equaled the 5th. This is despite the fact that the XPS-1500 is 35% shorter and has no preamp.

    I purchased this antenna in September 2023. In 2 weeks, it arrived via UPS nicely boxed and without any damage. The assembly was straightforward and extremely simple. If you are placing it in an attic, it should easily fit through the opening in your ceiling and if not, it can be "sectioned" for final assembly in the attic. The signal reception is as advertised and boosted the channels I receive from 26 to 88. The signal reception is sufficient that the channels now present clear pictures and sound without interruption in the valley in which I reside. I couldn't be happier with the decision to purchase this antenna.

    GAVE THANKS $5 FOR THIS ANTENNA (see below). I live in a low elevation. After 4 other long range antennas I tried this Range Xperts Long Range Outdoor VHF/UHF - Updated Model. Mounted 14' off ground (10 feet lower than MY OTHER old antennas) It doubled the signal strength ,on my weakest station, while located in my living room. I like having all 4 broadcast stations. You were correct when you said how good quality of the build is, and the price was about 1/2 what I expected. Thank you for all your videos

    I bought this antenna back in August 2022, which is not the updated version and it works very well at my location. So Glad Tyler had a review recommendation on the Range experts antenna. I was pleasantly surprised it was able to get UHF TV signals clearly, that were 80-90 miles away. Since my wife watches the TV I found a sweet direction to point at where we can get all the local UHF & VHF stations without rotating antenna. My wife can serf channels like we're on cable.😀👍🖥

    I'm old , so not a stranger to Broadcast TV at all. Learning about the changes in broadcast TV since the old days was helpful. Thanks for that!
    I paired this antenna with the basic Winegard Preamp. Baltimore stations were the goal for my tricky area. It took the preamp to bring in WBFF. The Mediasonic tuner now has 54 channels just pointed at television hill.
    Also some Philly and Harrisburg stations are coming in.
    My coax is 75 feet, so I will be getting a chimney mount to cut that in half stronger signal strength.
    I had an old flat lead Channel master I hooked the coax to without the preamp and got 34 stations.
    So the combination of this antenna and Winegard preamp made a huge improvement. When I move and shorten the RG6 I expect 20 or more % signal.
    This is a smart pick!

    • @joeevans1687
      @joeevans1687 6 днів тому

      Update.... All the work is done. Chimney mount strait down to the TV with 30 ft of RG6. The leaves have come in since I put this up and the Winegard Preamp just wasnt enough this time of year. So I picked up a Channel Master 7779 with 30Db. Everything came right back. This amp has 2 settings so I can reduce to 15Db next winter if I get overloaded.
      My Mediasonic is showing about 15 points higher so everything we watch is round 65 to 85 rather than sketchy lower numbers now. I look forward to a review on the 7779 amp.

    You were correct about the Range Xperts XPS-1500. The antenna is in the Attic at about 12 feet. The house has a tin roof, in a hole behind a hill. I have five UHF station at 35 mi.(rabbitears). All come in great, one I think was so strong it was overdriving the amp(Televes a 560483). I turned down the gain (I think it was gain) it was only marked with a line and 0-20. So if it it was in db, it is at about 15 under. This is just a great antenna. I am waiting on the rotor. When it gets here I am looking forward to really giving this antenna and amp a test drive. Thanks for the heads up on Range Xperts.

    Ok so i stumbled on your videos tonight while researching a solution to my own antenna issues. I have a good amount of experience playing around with antennas throughout my life going back to the old analog days, but my issue lately has me kinda stumped for now, Im getting stronger channels now at full strength but at the cost of one typically reliable channel in the medium range, to elaborate I'm Currently running an older discontinued Mohu Sky 60 that has a built in preamp, despite the built in preamp ,i used to run a separate GE external outdoor preamp on this antenna and it worked great like that for a couple years, getting strong channels at 75% medium range channels at 40-50% untill the preamp burned up i lost all channels, So now im back to using just the mohu power inserter and i lost 1 important medium range channel, but stronger channels come in almost 100% (puzzeling) I do have a long RG6 cable run from the third floor roof top antenna to the basement where the power inserter is located then it all feeds into a basic two way splitter to two TVs. Basically im debating a couple things. Do i get a power splitter to amplify the signal from the preamped Mohu, or do i get a new Preamp like i used to run up by the antenba Or do i scrap everything and get a new antenna with new amplifier. Like maybe this range expert with an amplifier or
    Lastly i would love to see a video on amplification and how to know if you're over amplified or under amplified, i think you should do a video covering this topic and how to remedy it because it seems nobody ever seems to cover it in depth, beyond quickly stating that over amplification could be your issue if you're close to towers, but what if you need to amplify signal to get weaker channels in an area, but lose stronger channels? Theres got to be a way to hit a happy medium. Like using attenuators maybe? Also I'm wondering if its acceptable to run a preamp on the rooftop antenna then run a powered splitter in the basement or will that cause over amplified situation? Everywhere seems to imply using either a preamp or a power splitter/signal amplifier but not both together...

At the time you made the video, Comcast went from 9.99/month for local station access to 18.99/month. Fast forward to 2023 and now Comcast charges 24.99/month for local station access. Talk about greedy local station owners. As more and more people drop cable and satellite TV the price for cable, satellite, and streaming TV providers is going to get even more expensive, as the local station owners are going to jack up retransmission fees to make up for that lost revenue.

    I'm half tempted to get one of these for the house. We're on a hilltop, and want antenna and redundancy as a backup for DirecTV stream whenever we lose internet, and I mostly am interested in this because of its great gain on VHF, CBS 13 is about 45 mi away from us on VHF, and the antennas we've tried have not been able to get it. If the CBS channel is on high VHF channel 13, this antenna should grab it. You just might need to use a TV tuner/signal meter as a guide to try different locations for the antenna until you find a spot where the CBS channel is reliably picked up. I pickup WOWK 13 extremely well on custom self made 12 element antenna. It is tuned to the exact frequency the station broadcasted on prior to the last frequency change for them. Years ago I found a computer program that will give the dimensions to make a Yagi antenna for any frequency you select. I made it using 1 1/2" PVC for the main boom and 1/4" all-thread for the elements. It is literally just laying on the floor in my attic pointed in the correct direction. Doesn't the reception change based on temperature, humidity, and general weather? How can we know more precisely how this antenna performs compared to something like the Televes, Channel Master, or similar large outdoor antennas? It would be nice if you could keep the best performing indoor and outdoor antennas to compare directly with any new antenna you review. If the new antenna beats the previous best, then keep that one going forward.

    I ran across Range Xperts a few years ago when searching for antennas. Their antennas look like they have a good build. Range Xperts still over exaggerates mileage performance. The Mini Metro antenna could be a good antenna for those in medium to strong signal areas, but there are no specs on the product page. I moved to a single family home and placed my antennas in the attic. They work fairly well there, but they might not after I install a radiant barrier to reduce the attic's temperature so I might need an antenna that can go on the roof.

We get cable and I watch apps on my smart TV but I would still like some channels that I did lose when they scrapped my old antenna. I did have them save the wires - albeit they did cut, shorten them, and wrapped them so they are hidden off of one of the corners of the second story. What small, “cheaper” antenna would you recommend? Like I said - I want to stay in the antenna game but it isn’t a priority. Not to get too far off topic, but something I could use would be some advice on what the best coax is. Right now I’m using some RG6 rated for satellite use, but I don’t know if it’s durable enough to use with an antenna rotator. Most have solid inner conductors which may limit the amount of flexing. Perhaps the RG6 could be coupled to a flexible coax pigtail.

    • @scratchpad7954
      @scratchpad7954 9 місяців тому

      As far as I know, I found a great chart that shows the losses in different RG coaxial cables per 100 feet at selected frequencies from 1 MHz in the AM band up to 1 GHz in the UHF band. If I recall correctly, it said RG-6 and RG-11 were the least lossy; on the other hand, RG-58 and RG-174 (which I assume is what these piece-of-crap scam antennas use) are significantly lossier.

    I tried this antenna out based on its higher gain readings than many others in Tylors reviews but my little televes dinova for some reason still picked up stronger signal and more channels. I am in a valley and it is very hilly and full of trees so this may be the reason. Location can make or break any antenna. There really is no "best" antenna. @AntennaMan  Місяць тому

      Keep in mind that the Televes Dinova Mix has a preamplifier built in so if you're in a fair to weak signal location, it might work better than the Range Xperts antenna simply because of the amplifier pushing the signals through the coax compared to signal loss with the passive Range Xperts antenna.

    I thought this antenna was actually junk because it was advertised on UA-cam and all over the internet back in 2020 to 2021 when I was researching antennas.
    Tyler you helped me with setting up a stacked set up with the RCA antenna I chose that couldn't get WHTM's then very trash signal by adding the stellar labs 30-2476. It has been since working flawlessly except for a little bit of an issue with wind load on very windy days causing some pixelation. I'm wondering if the vhf/uhf version would be a good replacement for both antennas since WHTM almost doubled their signal last October. Or if the UHf version which is smaller than the combo RCA antenna would work with the 30-2476 and have less wind load?

    • @AntennaMan
      @AntennaMan  10 місяців тому +1

      You can certainly try this antenna. The VHF performance is a bit less than the Stellar Labs VHF antenna but if WHTM improve their signal it might no longer be a problem. UHF performance on this is much better than the RCA.

      @AntennaMan yeah being it's more optimized for the current uhf band is a plus. Though the RCA antennas uhf section does well with 100% signal strength and quality on my hdhomerun flex4k. The Stellar labs 30-2476 now brings in whtm the same. One part of me wants to tinker with it one part says it works leave it alone.
