    I’m playing EK as a buff wizard. Quite powerful - basically fills the role of a cleric without the healing. Healing comes from Linzi while Tristan is damage based Mystic Theurge.

      Oooo I dig this all around. Tristan would probably make a kickass mystic theurge.

    It's always great to hear your take on the classes, mate. Thank you for this series! :)
    I agree that the EK's spell progression being delayed is an unnecessaryly harsh attempt at balancing the advantages that the prestige class has over basic wizards. The considerable improvement to your BAB and hitpoints is really nice, but the EK is basically dead on arrival, when you consider the opportunity cost of not taking Arcane Trickster instead, which offers sneak attack dice for ALL direct damage spells at character level 14-15, free improved invisibility plus slightly less of a BAB bonus - especially with how laughably easy it is to set up opponents for ranged sneak attacks. - not to mention easy access to either Mutagen/Cognatogen or Uncanny Dodge. Add to that the fact that spells like Melf's Minute Meteors (= basically, magical darts that give your character 5 attacks per round at a nice to-hit bonus) of Baldur's Gate fame are not in our repertoire either, and it becomes painfully obvious that even the EK's capstone feat is absolutely not worth the bother.
    EDIT: this is just my opinion on the EK's performance in group play. For solo play, though, EK is actually quite strong - see Mithral's video.

      Wrong. The A.T. as cool as it sounds on paper has a HORRIBLE BaB (1/2), that no amount of buffing will ever fix. At later stages (and higher difficulties ofc) the A.T. will actually miss most of it's touch attacks (and along with those misses all the theoretical sneak damage you will never actually see), making it far inferior to the EK.

  • @Justanotherconsumer
    @Justanotherconsumer 3 роки тому

    EK is good for settings where you can’t rest - spec archer and act as fire support while still getting most of the spell options. This game doesn’t have that restriction, resting is generally easy to do.
    That said, trickster getting infinite casts on the touch sneak attack spells means they do passable back line damage and they get skills too.

      i played a tiefling abyssal sorcerer abyssal bloodline conjuration specialist, its very strong once u get summon skeletal champions, i picked all conjuration spells available before that except summons, and use magic missile if u want to dmg something, the utility is very high against low reflex monsters and just summon 20+ skeletons and spam meta magicked missiles against anything else.
      originally i wanted to cast battlefield conjuration then summon loads of monsters then cast buffs and transformation to turn into a monster fighter but im not high enough level yet and im not sure if it's worth it because i started with high str / con and charisma but i put all my points into charisma for spellcasting and my feats are for spellcasting too so idk, but i can recommend playing a conjuration sorcerer is pretty fun just the low level summons are worthless.
      i would playtest it to high level but playing a summoner in underneath the stolen lands is kind of a pain though i dont have any problems with it in the main story mode.

    I sometimes feel like people are being a bit too hard on the EK. It's not amazing, but I'd still probably rate it above a pure martial class even as a standard Fighter 5 / Wizard 5 / EK 10, which is how I would recommend a newbie build this class. Even this simple build gets you 7th lvl spells, a BAB of 17, and enough bonus feats to fairly comfortably fit in both ranks of Arcane Armor Training.
    Mithral Plate Armor has 25% spell failure, so only a 5% after feats. Couple that with a decent 2h weapon and you can be a pretty flexible attacker. This variant of the EK is more martial than caster though.

      My build is similar. Human Wizard(Evoker) 8/Fighter 2/Eldritch Knight 10. BAB is +16, 9th level arcane spells with a CL of 18, 18 feats (10 level, 7 bonus, 1 racial). Pretty good, really.

  • @Cleptomancer
    @Cleptomancer 5 років тому +1

    The 10th level ability is ultimate Nova, but hard to pull off. You can cast two ( 1 quickened) maximized & or empowered Ray spells while invisible with sense vitals on. Definitely a late game boss killer, but not worth the wait on Unfair difficulty. This is the rare case I'd want improved crit range on a weapon AND Ray spells.

    • @sebastianwinkler5243
      @sebastianwinkler5243 5 років тому +1

      Consider the opportunity cost though. You could just have gone Arcane Trickster and have enjoyed extra sneak attack damage on your spells from level 5 or 6 onwards without the need to waste spell slots for Sense Vitals or Improved Invisibility, even. For an EK with weapon focus: Ray and Critical Focus your crit range would be 19-20 and thus still very much unreliable, PLUS you can only feasably fish for a crit with ray spells, because I think we can all agree that your damage with a ranged or melee weapon will be so bad it'll always be better to cast a spell instead. All said, using a normal spell and a prepared quickened one is both a much more reliable and more versatile way of getting off two spells in one round. Yes, an EK then theoretically gets a chance at a 3rd, 4th, etc. spell, but the chances are so remote that I would always prefer the Trickster's guaranteed sneak attacks that even work on AoE spells like Horrid Wilting or simple Fireballs. And to put the cherry on the cake, ATs are the best of all spellcasters when it comes to fighting chaff, because their ranged sneak attacks against Touch AC with simple Cantrips allow them to contribute to fights while allowing them to conserve their spells for harder encounters.

    • @Cleptomancer
      @Cleptomancer 5 років тому +1

      @@sebastianwinkler5243 100% agree. Arcane trickster is the only magic prestige class that's really worth it. EK is just too clunky. I'd rather just be a cleric with one level dip into Fighter than an EK.

    Personally, like pen and paper, I went 1 in Scaled Fist Monk then 2 in Paladin followed by 3 in Sorcerer and 4 levels in Dragon Disciple before going Eldritch Knight. I finished the game with out to much difficulty around level 17. The character was not my best damage dealer but it soaked and negated a lot of damage with its self buffs and crowd control spells. Rest of party by the way was 2 arcane tricksters, 1 Cleric, and 1 Mystic Theurge.

    it's really unfortunate how bards are lackluster as their own class outside of buffing the team. they were so strong in nwn2. on the other hand you made them into the same charisma builds based around divine might that every other good build was based on so I guess that's not surprising. I remember at epic levels their hymn was really strong so a pure bard was pretty viable, and they had curse song which decimated enemies across all their stats on top of doing some aoe damage, and you also had a heal song.

    The EK loses 1 caster LvL (1/2 spell lvl) and a single feat to gain multiple advantages. You can still be a perfect "specialized" wizard and get the bonus HP and BaB with minimal sacrifice. There is not really any strong argument NOT to take EK particularly as a universalist wizard, in contrast to other caster classes that gain lvl advantages (sorcerer for example). The few bonus feats you will lose from the wiz progression is not a valid reason to stay away from EK.
    Also, A properly built EK is far, FAR superior to an Arcane Trickster or even a Magus at high lvls. The only disadvantage of the class is that it takes a while to get going. But on Lvl 15+ very few builds can compare with it.
