  • From August 11tth to the 14th of 2000 over 14 inches of rain fell over a small area of Morris and Sussex counties in New Jersey. The flooding from the rainfall caused 4 local dams to fail. The flooding waters from the failed dams, along with the 14 inches of rainfall, caused record flooding of New Jersey’s largest lake, Lake Hopatcong.
This video taken the day after, August 15, 2000, shows water level in a few areas of the lake including Hopatcong State Park and it’s bridge and dam, Lake’s End Marina, flooding on Espanong Road in Jefferson, Mount Arlington Beach, Barnes Bros. Marina, and the raging waters flowing from the lake into the Mustconetcong River.
For comparison, to see what this area of Hopatcong State Park, and it’s bridge and dam normally look like, please see this video here: • Walking Hopatcong Stat...

Remember this vividly. Was 5 years old living in Sparta at the time, my family and I had gone out to do errands during a lull in the rain, only for the skies to open back up and for us to be pretty much in a race to get home. I remember vividly seeing a firefighter with a horrified look on her face waving traffic to turn around near the intersection of Main St, Station Road, and Glen Road, as the section of the Wallkill River that ran along the Sparta Glen was basically turned in rapids and had washed out the bridge that crossed over it. A few days later my dad and I drove around town to get a look at the damage. In all the town lost 2 dams, including bursting a dam at Seneca Lake which was essentially drained of all its water after that, at least 5 bridges, and had a landslide along Glen Road.

I remember this flood well. The intersection of Espanong, Minnisink and Howard Blvd was submerged and there was even flooding up in Franklin on rt. 23. Odd thinking this was a little over 23 years ago.

If I recall correctly, from what I was told, this was the storm that blew out Furnace Pod Dam and turned the Compact/Singer Building into a literal dam. I should ask my dad for the photos of that day to scan and digitize them.

Yes, you are correct. Furnace Pond Dam was one of the dams that failed. The other 3 were Tomahawk Lake Dam, Seneca Lake Dam and Edison Pond Dam.

That storm caused us to lose Sparta Glen completely.

Just remember when buying a car or property in the area. Hopefully not to many largemouth escaped. What a clean up we had to do, took months

I remember this. I also remember they feared that if the dam at the state park failed Lakeside BLVD would of been gone.

Was there any flooding in the Woodport area? I curious since we just bought a house there and are moving in a month.
