    Kimberly, I just love these. I always thought people painted on the inside, but I love this look better. I have to tell you this. You are so pretty. Just wanted to tell you that. Thanks so much for the tutorial. Love it.

      +Becky Gatlin :D I'm so glad you like the tutorial! Painting on the outside, in my opinion, makes much more sense if you're using these as vases or even if you're putting things in them because you will either have water sitting in them or will be taking things in and out and scratching the inside over and over from doing so.
      You're compliments are very flattering, thank you! Who doesn't feel good from a nice compliment, right? Thank you! xo

    Wrapping the sandpaper around a block of wood to keep it really flat helps to avoid mistakes while sanding the raised letters.

    • @TheCreativeGlow
      @TheCreativeGlow  8 років тому

      +Barb Hayes - that's a good idea, but you don't want them look sanded evenly all over, either. Well... I guess that's up to the person making them, I just like it to look naturally worn, which would likely be uneven. But GREAT tips! ;)

    don't buy mason jars singly at craft shops, they are WAY to expensive, if you can't find them used at salvation army or garage sales, go buy a box of them at walmart for 11 dollars (this includes lids and rings). If you don't want to paint them all, share them with friends, or actually use them to store foods in. You don't have to 'can' with them, just store candy, dried beans, bag of rice, spice mixes (etc) in the ones you don't paint. They are pricing jars WAY to much for this craft. Nice video.

    I just got done doing a trial jar from the JoAnn Fabrics online project. They said you have to use chalk paint which turns out to be about $6 or $7 cause they only sell it in a big jar. It is really difficult to paint with. Personally I don't like the stroke marks. But the point is that if I hadn't seen your video I wouldn't have known that I could use the Martha Stewart paints! Since they cost less I can buy different colors rather than one expensive bottle of white. And...I didn't know they could be 'cured' in the oven. The JoAnn lesson said to use the Wax as the final coating which again..you guessed it!...is another expensive bottle. But I used my Hard Coat Mod Podge and got the same effect. But I think that the oven method is a very good idea. So thank you for the tutorial cause I learned 2 valuable things!

    • @TheCreativeGlow
      @TheCreativeGlow  10 років тому

      Oh dear! That sounds way more complicated than it has to be! You can also use spray paint if you want to not have brush strokes, but again, not as cost effective as the MS craft paints I use if you're only doing 3. I think the brush strokes add to the shabby chic look myself, but everyone has their own preference. And if you use a sponge brush, after the second coat, you don't see the strokes much at all.
      I'm glad your Mod Podge worked for you. The oven method works fantastic actually and they should be dishwasher safe! They look fabulous and are very durable!! I LOVE mine SO much!
      I'm so glad you liked my video and that you learned some new things from it! Thanks for commenting! :)

    • @missourigal
      @missourigal 10 років тому +1

      The Creative Glow Thanks so much for your response. I live in an apt. so spraying painting is out. But I am going to use the sponge brush and do the oven curing. UA-cam is such a fab way to learn things due to people like you :-) and it's a good example of how just because a company like JoAnn says how to do something, that doesn't mean it's the best or easiest way so go research on UA-cam before you buy their expensive You Will Need list.

      The Creative Glow A friend brought up a good point: are there fumes when you bake them in the oven? I am really sensitive to any kind of "fumes" and can't be around air fresheners, perfume, etc. So I'm hoping the answer is 'no' :-) but I can always just do the 14 days curing...and speaking of that, if you just air dry, then can you still wash them the same way?

    • @TheCreativeGlow
      @TheCreativeGlow  10 років тому

      Well, I wouldn't call it fumes exactly... well, technically maybe, but not harmful. It's just because the moisture is being dried out of the paint in this case, but it does, unfortunately, smell a bit when you bake them. Once they are in the oven it takes a few minutes for them heat up and and once they do, that's when the smell begins. It only lasts about 10 minutes and then the smell dissipates and doesn't linger in fabrics or anything. I wouldn't expect that it's harmful to your health since I doubt they'd recommend the bake curing if it was, but if you don't want to risk it, being sensitive to smells and all, you could just do the air curing... but I think it's 21 days to air cure... unless that's the MS glass paints. I can double check. Just keep in mind, and this is VERY INPORTANT, you'll need to wait until the paint is cured to do the distressing or you'll have too much moisture in the paint and you'll probably end up with a mess. At least wait a few days if you become too anxious to wait the full 21. After a few days, just try a small test patch with your sandpaper.

    • @TheCreativeGlow
      @TheCreativeGlow  10 років тому

      Oh, and yes, they should still hold up to washing the same way with air curing! :)

    You can also make your own chalk paint very cheap. Take any kind of regular paint and add some powdered plaster of paris! I did it and it works great! Paint will be a little thick but dries quickly! So cheap to make yourself!!!

  • @TheCreativeGlow
    @TheCreativeGlow  9 років тому

    Kimberly Brooke Green Because it needs to be fully dry before going in with your sandpaper. The paint will remain with some moisture in it until it is cured.

    This looks awesome! I'm doing distressed mason jars for my center pieces at my wedding. I started out painting mine like you did but I just couldn't find/ mix the right colors, my fiance didn't like the paint stroke texture (I did but oh well; compromise) and making them in bulk wasn't super cost effective. Sooo we got custom spray paint mixed locally (at only $10/ can it was a great price!) and did our jars with a layer of white, then a layer of color then sanded them. I love em! Now just to make 100 more... lol.
    PS I love your technique for sanding them down- doing it around the corners looks so great! Can't wait to distress all mine! Thank you for the awesome tutorial!

      The brush strokes smooth out slightly after you brush it on, but the baking is just to cure the paint to make it permanent. It still has a slight texture, but not distinctive brush strokes.

    • @TheCreativeGlow
      @TheCreativeGlow  10 років тому +1

      Standard acrylic paint is not curable on glass surfaces, unfortunately. At Michael's they now have other acrylic paints that are bakeable or air curable besides the Martha Stewart ones and are a bit less expensive. I forget the brand name, but they are the Premium Acrylic Paints and the directions on the back will say that they are bakeable. If it does not say it, then it is not good for this purpose. ;) Have fun!

    I have a little question. If i want to paint the lids of jars, do i do the same process as for the jars? What i mean is; apply 1 coat of paint, let dry for an hour, apply a second coat and then put in the oven for 30 min at 350° and let cool down?
    Thanks and keep doing what you are doing cuz you're great at it!

      Sorry for replying so darn late, but if you haven't decided to try it already, the answer is yes, as long as you put the glass in when the oven is cold and then let the glass heat up gradually as the oven does, it should be safe... glass just doesn't agree with being heated (or cooled) too quickly.

  • @goldwilliams8819
    @goldwilliams8819 7 років тому +1

    Hi there,
    Truly a great video. I just have one question... with the oven heating, can I do that with acrylic paints, like Apple barrel by plaid or does it only work for on!y chalk paints?

    • @TheCreativeGlow
      @TheCreativeGlow  7 років тому

      I don't use chalk paints. The oven baking needs to be done using oven bakable acrylics paints. Any paint that is bake-able will say so on the packaging (back side normally). You can't use just any acrylic paint, has to be oven bake-able... but some *others* do use chalk paint, yes.

    • @goldwilliams8819
      @goldwilliams8819 7 років тому

      Apple Barrel isn't child paint, it's crafters paint. Personally I use Golden's paint myself and their mediums, but I have tones of Apple Barrel, Folk Art an Deco Art paints around as well and wanted to use them. Thank you very much for your feedback.

    • @TheCreativeGlow
      @TheCreativeGlow  7 років тому

      goldie L LOL! No, that wasn't supposed to read "child paints"... was supposed to be "chalk paints". I fixed it! Whoops! Maybe it makes more sense now. :)

    • @goldwilliams8819
      @goldwilliams8819 7 років тому

      Yes... That sounds sense able lol. So any kind of chalk paint is good to use for oven or only use the paint that say for oven only?

    • @TheCreativeGlow
      @TheCreativeGlow  7 років тому

      goldie L Only the paint that says oven bake-able. I don't believe chalk paint needs to be oven baked... but I also don't know if it is quite as durable as oven cured paint. I should do an experiment sometime!! :)

    i bought some acrylic paints as well as a base coat that is made to help acrylic paints to be applied better on glass. do you think i should avoid baking my bottles as the plastic in the paint
    may just melt?

    • @TheCreativeGlow
      @TheCreativeGlow  4 роки тому

      If you’re using a base coat that is for that purpose, then that would take the place of baking the glass items. Only bake if the paints you’re using have directions to do so, otherwise it may not be advisable.

    I am hoping to do this with a 1/2 gallon glass jar to store sugar and/or flour in. Is it safe to store food in the jar after it's been painted with this product? Thanks; great video.

    I realize this was done some time ago, but I didn't hear how long you left it in the oven. Did you also say that you let them cool in the oven? Thanx so much for sharing - I love it and have some an idea.

    I used the same Martha brand multi purpose paints you used in satin. I even cleaned the jars and I used the hair dryer tip and everything. 😕

    • @TheCreativeGlow
      @TheCreativeGlow  8 років тому

      +Elaine Valdez - The only thing I can say that I did different, if I'm understanding you correctly, is that I used my hair dryer on them before letting them sit to dry for the hour I specify. That will allow the paint to fully cool and really set the curing process in motion. If you're following all the directions and using all the same products, as you say, you shouldn't be having any issues. I hope that tip helps you, please let me know, ok?

  • @VeroNika-gc7mb

    Can regular acrylic paint be used? If yes, will it works the same when cured or it needs to be specific paint for that?

    Very nice!! don't you need to clean the jars with alcohol first?

    • @TheCreativeGlow
      @TheCreativeGlow  9 років тому

      +Chris Pecherzewski Yes, it is a good idea! I usually always do. If I remember correctly (it's been a while sinc eI recorded this one) I had prepared my jars the day before and meant to mention it in the voice overs, but forgot the following day when I was recording those. I was sure I added an annotation to pop up to remind people, but it doesn't appear so. I'll have to check and see if perhaps I didn't click "apply"... it seems as though some of my other annotations are missing as well. :)

    Are the oven instructions the same for when painting the jar from the inside?

    • @TheCreativeGlow
      @TheCreativeGlow  10 років тому

      Yes, there shouldn't be any difference. But just to note, as mention in the video, painting them on the outside is safe for real flowers and extended periods of wetness. If you're going to be using these for real flowers at all, then you don't want to paint the inside. If you're using them for artificial flowers (or anything else), you're in the clear for painting on the inside! ;) Good luck and thanks for commenting!

      No, can't be any acrylic paint. It will have directions on the back for baking if it's the right kind of acrylic paint.

    Much easier to paint the mouth 1st, then flip the jar upside down and paint the rest.

    My jars are very streaky. Did you have that problem? Maybe i applied the paint to thick?

    • @TheCreativeGlow
      @TheCreativeGlow  10 років тому

      No. Mine do end up with some stroke marks but those are usually barely noticeable. You used a sponge brush, right? Other than that, perhaps you need more coats of paint? And it's best to blow them with a hair dryer in between coats after waiting for them to dry for that hour -- it makes applying further coats easier since it semi-cures the paint. I did mention it in the video but perhaps I didn't emphasize that it really helps!

    Can you use acrylic paint? & bake it to not chip also ??

    • @TheCreativeGlow
      @TheCreativeGlow  8 років тому +1

      No, regular acrylic paint is not formulated to adhere to glass and other non-porous surfaces and is definitely not meant to be baked!

    So tried doing this but am finding that the paint isn't really sticking well to the jar. Used a "generic" Michaels acrylic and a Martha Stewart one as well. Even after 2 coats didn't really look as great as yours...any thoughts or ideas? Yours like show no streaks from the foam brushes it seems. Want to use these in May for my wedding but want them to look great...help! :-)

    • @TheCreativeGlow
      @TheCreativeGlow  9 років тому

      Yes, some people are saying they're having trouble with the first coat sticking. I do mention, if you go back to the video at 5:13 to about 5:26 I talk about getting that first coat to stick better using a hair dryer. ;)
      A couple other tips:
      1. Wipe the entire surface of the jar with rubbing alcohol to get it nice and clean.
      2. Make sure that you're not using plain acrylic paint. It NEEDS to be a bakeable acrylic. They will say on the back in the directions if they are bakeable. Martha Stewart, as you know, if what I used. But Most Premium Acrylic craft paints should be bakeable. Like the Folk Art brand Premium... but as I said, it will say on the back. And I wouldn't mix colors across brands, if you're mixing, keep within one brand.
      3. The hair dryer trick. It starts the curing process slightly. But make sure to still let your second coat dry for an hour before baking!!! That's important!
      Hope this helps! ;)
      Thanks for watching the video, and, don't worry, you'll get it! ;)

    These are amongst some of the best painted jar's I've seen!!! You did a really great job! I would like to know if possible, how long it took you to sand the jars - when video was in "normal" speed, it was obvious you were taking your time. I love this look, and Tfs :)

    • @TheCreativeGlow
      @TheCreativeGlow  9 років тому

      Oh, wow, thanks so much for that compliment! It really didn't take, too long at all. I can go back to my original unedited video and find out for you. :)

    • @djsthings
      @djsthings 9 років тому

      I started my jar's, this morning and was using heat to dry first one, when I realized I'd used an enamel paint and this wasn't going to give me the look. I ran to sink, washed off then went shopping (via internet) to get paint. Should be here on saturday so I can do it again. No need to go back and look at it, I was just curious, am still going to do it on saturday regardless of the time involved. But they are are really very very pretty!!!

    • @TheCreativeGlow
      @TheCreativeGlow  9 років тому

      Great! Awesome! I know the sanding was very quick - I'm sure no more than 2-5 minutes per jar.
      I hope you bought a bakeable acrylic paint and not just a regular acrylic or it'll just peel right off. If you went with the Martha Stewart acrylics I used in the tutorial, you're good! Have fun! I'm sure yours wi turn out just as lovely! ;)

    Have you ever used spray paint so that you can do a bunch at one time? I bought primer, and the color I will be using. I asked if it was ok for glass and they said it's ok?

    • @TheCreativeGlow
      @TheCreativeGlow  8 років тому

      +Rhonda Bartolazzi - No I haven't. The reason I use these paints is because I like the brush strokes and it cures to adhere to the glass much better!! There are spray paints that you can use on glass, but I prefer this method for the reasons I said and since I can do it right in the house... spray paint distributes "paint dust" all over the room so I have to set up outside or in the garage.

    Question.... So I just painted some of these jars but when I went to put the second coat of paint on it was rubbing off my first coat if paint. They dried for two hours the first time and I still used a blow dryer to help dry them before putting on the second coat. What did I do wrong?

  • @crystalsnow2238

    I put my 1st coat on and let dry for over an hour but when I went into do the 2nd coat I noticed it peeling does that mean it wasn't dry enougj? It felt really dry.
