Thanks so much for this video! We started our older dog (also Finn :)) on to a raw diet because he has so many GI issues from when he was a small puppy and nothing seemed to help. We transitioned him to raw when he was about 2 and haven't looked back. He loves it, and I am so happy to say he has been so healthy since we switched! We now have a puppy and I am a bit nervous transitioning her because she is young, but she seems to be have no stomach issues. So I am going to do the cold turkey method. I will have some fresh pumpkin on hand just in case - but I can't wait to switch her over now. She is super interested in Finn's food so I don't think there will be a problem :) Thanks!!

Hi Rachel, thanks so much for your videos! I have learned a ton of things from you as I prepare to get a puppy next month. I want to feed my dog a raw organic diet if possible, but I’m concerned that it may cause him to have bad doggy breath. Have you experienced that with your dogs or had other questions or comments regarding keeping a dogs breath fresh especially when eating a raw diet and not the dog foods that are supposed to help with their teeth and breath as well.

Sweet! I am going to try fairly cold turkey for my huskies. Botha re very young, a year and under a year. They have some raw meaty bones in their diet now. I will buy an extra pound and kong of add it in slowly but not with a plan. My old small dog though I will definitely have to go very gradual.
I want to feed a low carb kibble along with raw. Do I need to separate the different types (to aid digestion) or can they be mixed together, and fed at the same time?

How do you figure out what diet your dog needs. Like how much calcium and things like that thelat they need? We have a rescue pup and we have a guess what breeds he is, but we dont know for sure. My biggest concern about going raw is that I won't give him the balanced diet that he needs.
Hi . My 9yr old pit who we love like a child was at the vet yesterday and he was diagnosed with a huge tumor. I been researching natural medicine and diet. Bc the only option they gave us was putting him down 😔 he isn't as lively as b4 but doesn't act like he's in pain so I decided to try natural remedies and we are on day 2 of thst and trying to transition him to raw . Ty so much for ur video on this! Do u have any suggestions of a kibble that I can use to help transition him as he isn't like the cold turkey method? And the food he was on was probably one of the worst that is sold. And I dumped it

I’m thinking of going “cold turkey” because my puppy won’t eat her kibble. She doesn’t like it. The only way I can get her to eat her food now is to add toppers and now I’m trying whole meal wet food. So I think I’m going to Raw on Monday.

@@araelamarie hi, it’s ok. Yes. I actually now do a blend of frozen raw and then top it with a wet “stew” food. Both are by either Honest Kitchen or “Stella and Chewy”.

I have an 9 week old German Shepard puppy. I did do a gradual approach (mixing kibble with raw) He was fine the first day but on the end of the second day he had full on diarrhoea. Now I don't know what to do. I Was told buy the independent shop who make and sell their raw food here in the UK, which is very popular and had great reviews to go cold turkey due to kibble interfering with the digestion of the raw. However I was told by the Breeder not to go cold turkey. So confused right now. Love your videos by the way and have really helped while getting ready for my puppy to arrive.

I hope after 2 years I can get an answer. My dog is 6 years old and I decided Monday to switch to raw. And im doing the slow approach. Monday went good, Tuesday she ate breakfast and then 30 min later threw it up. Dinner didnt touch the raw at all only kibble. Diarrhea as well Tuesday only. Wednesday I just put raw for breakfast and she didn't touch it at all. I put it away and for dinner put it back out with a couple pieces of kibble, she just ate kibble and no raw. So basically Wednesday she fasted. Im feeding Primal brand beef nuggets. Im thinking about going to store and getting chicken formula. And goat milk. Any suggestions??? Should I just put raw out in the morning again?? Or what??

I heard kibble digest slower than raw food so if you mix both it causes stomach problems since they are digesting at different speeds? So cutting out the kibble completely and start feeding them wet canned food and then gradually adding raw to the canned food is the best transition? but then again you are correct. Do what you feel is best for your dog cause you know your dog better than a random person on the internet.
The Lamp hi!!! Thank you for this comment. I have never found a conclusive study proving that mixing kibble and raw can cause major issues, BUT, as you said - some dogs do better when you separate the two. Meaning, raw at breakfast then kibble at dinner for example. In my experience, the digest upset from feeding both options is less about absorption speed and more that the kibble itself is so high in carbs/sugar the dog doesn’t handle it well. This was a stellar comment! I will make a video on this just for you ;)

You're right! There's no "right" way to transition your dog from kibble to raw. I've been feeding raw (Prey Model Raw) to four dogs for almost 10 years. In the beginning I knew nothing about raw feeding and much less about "transitioning". The most credible advice I could find suggested that I should start with chicken and then slowly introduce other meats and organs for a period of about 4 to 6 weeks. That's what I did.
Yes, there was some loose stool but eventually my dogs adjusted. I've since learned that loose stool (a major indication of dog health) can be controlled by judicious introductions of bone. Constipation can be controlled by both reduction of bone or increase of things like heart of liver - at least in my experience.

I have been mixing a tiny bit of raw into my dogs kibble and he seems to ether 1. Doesn’t eat his food or 2. Eats only the kibble 3.Only eats a bit of food and then leaves the rest. Does anyone have advice?

Where do you order your raw food? Is there a major cost difference between kibble and raw food? Do you go to a local store or do you get it delivered from online? Btw love your channel and all the work you do to promote fostering and not to shop for dogs, but to adopt. I would greatly appreciate a response because I am thinking about adopting a dog.

Depends where you live. If you're in the USA it's more expensive. But for me it's the same price as a medium high quality kibble. Look for a list of places to buy the ingredients in wherever you live
I would go cold turkey if it's a couple of months old puppy, even if they get diarrhea for a day or two - mixing raw and kibble messes everything up in their tummy because raw is digested differently than cooked. If it's an adult dog go slowly but not for too long.

@@AsifAli-oz7hl I started with freeze dried raw for a few months then transitioned into frozen raw ( Carnivora) I also feed them honest kitchen dehydrated veggies and seeds with it as well. They are extremely happy and healthy and are thriving on this diet :)

Great advice I'm just about to start my dog on raw food after watching several videos I've come to the conclusion that the benifits of this diet far out way the negatives. He's only 13 months old and been on kibble the whole time he's never really liked it, so I'm hoping the raw food will help him eat better and have more energy.

@@MrAmber703 hi. It depends on the size of your dog. We only spend about £25 a month on raw food, as my dog is small and only eats 125g a day. But it the best thing we did, he is so much happier and healthier on it. 👍🏻 Good luck.

Cold Turkey gave my dog the shits. Backtracked to lightly cooked meat and rice to settle things down. Will start to cook meat less gradually.
So I've been feeding my girl raw (bones & co) but I couldnt find the brand I was buying so she wasn't eating the raw for a bit so I switched to Stella and.... She won't eat it.... ☹️ How do I get her to eat the Stella brand now. She picks it up takes it to the living room and leaves it there... 😐 She won't eat it.

Your videos are so helpful and I’m going to be making the transition into a raw diet for my pups! One of them lately is constantly lethargic, loose stool, not eating his dry food etc. We’ve taken him to the vet and nothing is actually wrong with him, so after doing research I think it’s the kibble causing him to feel this way, so I’m anxious to see how they’ll feel in a few months!

I have a question about raw feeding. I know that feeding grain in kibble helps lower heart problem risks, but with raw diet it seems that there is no grain. How would you fix that?
grain is not good for dogs what so ever. Have you seen wolves eat wheat? Or rice or dig out some potatoes? No. I've researched the raw diet and can say that you do not have to include any grains in your raw food. You can add a bit if you want, this will decrease the expense on feeding your dog.
Girl Ka it’s actually been scientifically proven that if you don’t give your dogs some source of grain they can develop heart problems so I would be concerned if I didn’t give my dog grains. This is especially important for some dog breeds including poodle and golden retriever. So you might want to fact check that.
@@diyclever4377 well you should check Dr. Karen Decker out as well, she never mentioned grains for dogs and she's a holistic veterinarian whom i'd trust with my dogs life if i had one. If grains are good for dogs, then i would add some brown rice to the recipe. About 10% of the whole diet.
Girl Ka thanks not trying to start a fight or anything but our vet said that a huge food company called blue buffalo did a study on it and they said that you should only take out grains if your dog has dietary restrictions but thanks!

I tried transitioning my dog by feeding her a raw meal in the morning and her canned food at night. It didn’t end well. She was vomiting and had diarrhea after 3 days of that. It looked like everything was going well for the first 3 days until THAT happened

Basically she’s trusts your decision just know your dog and they are more likely to have digestive issues and loose stool if you immediately make the switch

Hi So my dog is eating kibbles, raw fruits and veggies and raw boney parts of the meats.
My fur baby is having issues with his adrenal gland emptying itself, which is stressful for the whole family. I also was told by his vet to give him pumpkin as a source of fiber to help with his adrenal gland. I am still in the experience stage trying to figure out what will be best for my Maxx- ster. The smell at times is so OVERBEARING because it gets in his cover, on his bed and in the center rug we have in the living room which is where Maxx sleeps and spent most of his time.
Seeing him scooting his butt on my carpet 😱😳 did not go well with me LOL😣!!
I am a fur mama who only wants the best for her fur baby. I have been AROUND animals mainly dogs all my life but never had to literally be RESPONSIBLE for them.
