Loved souness as a player. Hes not the worst manager in history. I love him as a pundit as well, he even admits hes very old school, but so what.. he says what he thinks. • @BurnsTennis

I agree with you. Let's look at the three times England made a semifinal of a major tournament and could have either made the final or won the tournament:
1990 under Bobby Robson. Switched to 3:5:2 mid tournament with a sweeper and was probably the better side against West Germany in the semifinal, but didn't quite get the luck, hitting the post in extra time and losing on penalties:
Euro 96. Same thing again, this time Terry Venables plays the same formation and England were exceptional in the semifinal against Germany but again didn't get the luck hitting the post in extra time, losing on penalties just like 1990.
2018 under Southgate, this time 3:4:3 and they have their best tournament since Euro 96. This time a lack of experience costing them against Croatia.
Every other tournament where England played 4:4:2 they didn't make significant progress.
There were some very talented English players in the 1990s but when I see archive footage I feel a bit strange now because the formations just look so basic. And I used to go a lot of football back then, primarily Anfield and some London stadiums.

The standard or European football from 1977-1984 was the lowest I can remember. None of THE big European greats had good sides. Ajax, Inter, Munich, Madrid, Milan, Barca were all going through a massive slump by their standards.
Facts are that only 1 non-English side won the EC in 8 seasons. Is that because England had such amazing teams or that the opposition was shite?
Well when you consider in those days 90% ( if not more) of our club's players came from the UK. Did the performances of England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales reflect the dominance of our English clubs?........NO.

And literally LOTS of very tricky and dangerous teams in Eastern Europe. It was hell going behind the Iron Curtain to play in front of 70,000 in Sofia or 90,000 in Tblisi. Even Belgium had good sides like Bruges and Anderlecht. Talent was spread around the continent, not confined to just half a dozen rich super clubs like now. He didn't know how to pronounce moran, that's interesting

    • @BurnsTennis

I think Souness pronounced it perfectly well. A lot of these names that are considered Irish can be found in places like Galicia in Spain if not originated there. That's how it would be pronounced in galic languages. The last two syllables are emphasised.

@@BurnsTennis Exactly. In North West Spain, Moran is written Morán and pronounced with emphasis on the letter "a".

This Graeme Souness cling onto bygone era where we might have had three good Seasons is Mock other teams and blames other people when Liverpool lose the game bearing in mind Manchester United lost on the same day in mind is resent for Manchester United is so apparent that no one I know likes unlike Roy Keane who is challenged by Jurgen Klopp and I'm like Roy Keane's 1 stuff don't get ahead of yourself Jurgen Klopp Harris no one noticed how is teeth has changed each season they all have their faults Mourinho Pep Guardiola playing the same football club's work them out Pep Guardiola is unliked by people like Zlatan Ibrahimovic Eto ex England goalkeeper Joe Hart he makes out he's really nice and he's an absolute in the dressing room quote from Emmanuel Eto he didny speak to Eto for A year At Barcelona what does this have to do with Graeme Souness well I won't name anyone that hasn't said it to reporter in a different language Graeme Souness always pipes down or agrees with Roy Keane like I said you can clock had a go at Roy Keane and like Wrekin said it was sloppy compared to what you would like in the previous games I only say this because var is helping Liverpool more than any other club and among the common folk people are beginning to think that games are rigged now that was a statement whether it be true or untrue it's exactly what soon as is all about

Jesus. That's not even dinosaur mentality. That is unemployment mentality. Basically tell the players to run in training and thats it.

@wildebest Some people can only cope with simple but not subtle.
The ex Liverpool players of that era still don't give much way on what the secret was. But from what I can tell, the incessant five a side training meant that Liverpool were far suprerior to their opponents in dealing with the ball in tight spaces, and consequently they could play their way out of difficult situations, and put their opponents under pressure in difficult situations.
Liverpool players also had superior fitness, despite the talk of drinking a lot, I think that is overegged a bit, they worked much harder than they let on.
So the key was incessant five a side training, being comfortable with the football, and purchasing young players who had a lot of footballing intelligence.
Example, I read Ian Rush's book. He played a lot of reserve football as a central midfielder in Chester then went up front.
So Rush could understand how to interplay with guys like Dalglish, Beardsley, Barnes, Houghton as an established player.
So that is what Souness is talking about, learning from the senior pros who pass on how it should be done, by showing how it should be done.
As opposed to being told what to do at every turn.
