How To Tape A Sublimation Tumbler For Perfect Edges!

  • Hey, and welcome! In this episode, I’m going to show you how I wrap sublimation tumblers to get the perfect edges and seam. This newer way is only a slight adjustment to how I’ve been wrapping them, but for designs with solid colors, especially blacks, this has been working quite well for me. I think the thicker tape also has something to do with being able to tighten up the edges without pulling the paper.
    Please check out our Facebook group, groups/55947.... If you enjoy sublimation, just answer a couple of quick questions and join. We’d love to have you!

    I use my tiny Cricut vinyl scraper tool that came with my tool set to push those little spots at the top and bottom down. I also scrape the tape going down the seam and this has given me wonderful results!

    I usually used a scraper to scrap the wrinkles out of the top and the bottom so you don’t get that weird little ripple effect. I only use one layer of tape and it has worked for me. :) thanks for all the tips. Have a blessed day.

    • @industrialfringe953
      @industrialfringe953  2 роки тому +1

      Thanks for the tip! I have seen people use different things to push against the side with great results. Some even roll the edge of the tumbler on the table. For me, I’ve found that I sometimes miss a spot by just doing that. But I should try using a scraper, then adding my second piece of tape. I like the idea of having some help getting the wrinkles out. Thanks again for the tip, and thanks for watching!

I also use clear tape and remove the air from the inner seam and outer seam and with the clear tape I can see my seam seal up. To remove the air from my tape seam I use a matha stuard card maker tool, It works perfect. I also use the shrink wrap. I have a tumbler press but I perfer to use the same oven you used. You know, it’s funny. Some people have to over tape the edges (me) to get good results, and some people don’t tape the edges at all with great results! I can get away with not taping sometimes, but I’ve found a 100% consistent great result by taping the way I do, so I just keep on doing it that way. @@industrialfringe953 Oh my goodness Roy!!!! I tried this method and it worked soooooo well! I have just 2 tiny flaws - I call them flaws but no one would ever notice them except for me🤣 I do think my design might be a bit too tall at 8.15 inches. I will go back to see what size of design you use. Thank you so much for sharing your experimentation and sharing your knowledge!

    • @industrialfringe953
      @industrialfringe953  2 роки тому +1

      Hi, Valerie! You don’t have to, but I often find myself simplifying the layer, the duplicating and rotating the duplicated layer horizontally and sliding over to the other side IF I’m using a drop shadow. That gives a]the same shadow to both edges. And I make the seam on the right side just a tad wider, since a tiny bit of the edge will overlap. I have another video detailing the process a little more. ua-cam.com/video/NdPoK3I4xTM/v-deo.html Thanks so much for watching!

      Thank you! My prints are 9-1/4” by 8-1/8”. There is about 1/16 - 1/32” design overlap and just under 1/8” white paper overlap. The hope is the total overlap, design and white paper is around 1/8”.

    This was a fantastic tutorial. I learned alot. I actually have that same tape too. I did my first tumbler today (before watching this video) & I noticed the tape left it's mark on the tumbler. What does that mean and how should I avoid it for the next time? Thank you.

    • @industrialfringe953
      @industrialfringe953  Рік тому +1

      The most common reason for seeing tape marks is too much pressure in a press. Do you use a press? If so, try backing off of the pressure and only doing light pressure. Thanks for watching!

    Thanks for the video. When my son was in competitive Field Band many years ago, I used to do buttons for them with a badge-a-minit press….so many buttons! I had a ‘can of Whoop-ass’ one that was a favorite. Is your file for sale? Would love to do one for my son to see if he remembers… (I really need to find those floppy-disks with the files to try to recreate some of those memories…)

    Thanks for the videos, really helping me out. I am having trouble getting the top of the tumbler right. I have tried your way and a bunch of other ways, not sure why its coming out lighter on top. I even tried increasing the pressure on the press, still lighter on top. Any suggestions other then what you have already put out there?

    • @industrialfringe953
      @industrialfringe953  Рік тому

      Hey, Eric, a couple of questions. Is it just the top or the top and bottom? If it’s just the top. I’d try rotating the tumbler to see if your top is getting enough heat. If it’s a press, flip it. If it’s an oven, turn it upside down. If that’s not it, I’m at a loss. Good luck! And thanks for watching!

      @@industrialfringe953 the heat press looks like the on you have in the video I checked temp with a temp gun seems to run 10 to 20 degrees hotter then what is displayed. If it's temp, it might not be getting enough where I am putting the heat tape. I will try raising temp to 380 on my next attempt. Or should I increase the time at each turn of the tumbler?

      Hey, Patti, I make my designs 9-1/4” wide by just under 8-1/8” tall. Tumblers sometimes different ever so slightly in size, so when I get a new order in, especially from a different supplier, I always double check to make sure I’m printing exactly as I need. Thanks so much for watching!

    I have the same press and having trouble with getting good results on the top and bottom edges, so I'm about to try your method to see if I can improve. But I have a question, do I need to adjust those two knobs on the front of the press. I'm confused on their purpose.

    • @industrialfringe953
      @industrialfringe953  2 роки тому +1

      Hey, Christina! I believe the front two knobs are for making the heating element conform to smaller attachments, bug I don’t have any of those smaller attachments, so I’m just guessing. I leave them completely open. Also, I use light to medium pressure (more on the lighter side). Good luck! Let me know how it comes out!

      Definitely try it! I swear by it! I press at 365 degrees with the seam at the 9 o’clock position (looking at the bottom) for 50 seconds, rotate 180 degrees (seam at 3 o’clock position) for 50 seconds, rotate 90 degrees (seam at 6 o’clock position) for 25 seconds, rotate 180 degrees (seam at 12 o’clock position) for a final 25 seconds. If you get a chance, check out some of my other videos. I go over the process in at least one other video! Thanks for watching!

    I love your videos. I am struggling with seams and ghosting around the top and bottom. After watching how you tape, I think I know what I was doing wrong on the top and bottom. It is difficult to see, are you overlapping at all? Even a tiny little bit or are you butting the edges up? The one I did when I overlapped a fraction looked better than when I attempted to butt them together. Do you have a video of how you design your intentional seams? TIA

    • @industrialfringe953
      @industrialfringe953  Рік тому

      Hey, Gayla, I’m so glad you enjoy the videos! My first piece of tape overhangs by only a small amount, jut enough to have tape to connect with the bottom of the tumbler. My second piece is situated halfway along the edge, as it’s only task is to pull everything tight. And yes, check out my video about perfect seams. I touch base on creating seams there. Thanks so much for watching!
