Went to school with him... Was a year ahead of me.... He was a 'trend-setter' then and still is... He stands on his own.... Gilbert's Gilbert. !.... :)
I like this guy because even when he plays very quickly, it doesn't sound like a bunch of garbled BS. All his riffs have a beautiful sense of melody and all connect like a puzzle, much like classical music. It's wonderful.
I was starting G.I.T. when he was finishing... He had is chops then, like 1991.... He graduated and Racer X was doing live gigs at the Roxy.... A lot of people try to compare musicians, like some kind of competition. That's superficial... Everybody has their own influences, and is unique.... You are you, I am me. Paul is Paul. Yngwie is 'Yngwie'.... Don't get trapped man. I'll give you this: Paul gilbert is a real innovator from the X generation. He has his own chops... Bill
i've been to one paul's guitar clinics and he always favours his old school white PGM model with the fixed bridge..he's unbelievably fast with superbly clean picking...its just amazing seeing him jam spontaneously and shame all the other guitar players during his clinics haha...its more like speed-racer-arpeggio-X
OMG I FINALLY FOUND IT! At 2:25 he plays the intro to that solo the same way it sounds on the album. I practiced that for months and couldn't get anywhere close to that fast. If you look at all of his other live versions of this song on YT, he never plays that part. I can only assume because it's so goddamn hard to get clean
You really can tell he LOVES playing this song. No other shredders really show that the're enjoying what they're playing and love their fans as much as Paul does. He truly is a great musician who's grateful to have fans who love him and his music. What more can a musician ask for? So many others take their fans for granted, like it's their job to get up and show their fans how awesome they are. He's a TRUE musician. I wish more guitarists had his attitude. It's not a competition, its music.
No one can play all the stuff paul gilbert can play! jesus! he plays flamenco, rock, metal, blues, classical, jazz you name it! and about the speedpart... if you listen to the man you'll know speed IS his thing and that he can shred among yngwie! he just doesn't slap his cock in your face all the time like yngwie do! Paul Gilbert are a true hero!
We were in G.I.T. in 1991... Paul was finishing... He did Rock Performances. I did the Fusion performances with Danny Gilbert... What I liked about him, then, was that he wasn't afraid to stretch out his chops beyond teacher's commentaries... He was coming into his own.... A real lead guitarist/soloist has to take charge. Play what he feels.... He was going that way, then. He deserves kudos. He stood up. I respect him for playing whatever he wants, opening up, letting go.... Virtuosity..
+who said muddy? Paul is one of the most built to play well guitarists I've ever encountered and I've been a guitar fan since about 1980 ( i was 10) seriously this guy is out of ths world the man was dsesigned to play fast guitar 6'4" long ass fingers and skinny as a rail ,ever notice how george lynch wasn't the same after lifting weights? this long muscles are faster he's a freak and there will probably never be any one quite like him... the man is special, that's all I'm saying.
paul gilbert has the best technique ive EVER seen in a guitarist, better than vai, better than malmsteen waaaaaaayyyyy better then satch. gilbert is a god and hes technique is impetious. unbeliveable he can play this pretty much flawless live. astonishing.
He wore the space suit as a promo for one of the live preformances he released with his solo band (Space Ship One.) And i you have EVER watched a single paul gilbert interview you would know he is an extremely humble and down to earth guitar player.
@shoter9696 Paul is better in so many ways. A better performer, a cleaner shredder, and his vibrato and phrasing are off the scale. Plus he's such a nice guy!
i noticed that paul gilbert is great in picking...he has a quality of a guitarist that is so different in other players...he can obtain a speed at his own tempo...whether he wants at a high speed or low but the great thing is he can obtain it in clean shred...coz some other players play at high speed but it doesnt sound clear...paul gilbert ur the man!\m/
Part of having technical talent AND being a great musician is knowing WHEN to use your technical abilities. I'm a bassist and guitar player and even I don't want to listen to someone go off on a long "guitar rant" and play 50-million different arpeggios though I do respect it's difficultly I feel that sort of stuff is just salt and pepper to add to the song while the core of the song is much less technical and playable by a lot more people.
@ProgBassistPhx You are "Right On:".... I know from what you said that you are a person that really enjoys and appreciates musical expression.... So many, many people miss the point. Blow, and enjoy the medium that we live for... I really like what you said, it made my Day... Bill..
That guitar is a 1982 Ibanez Series X Rocket Roll II. I remember somewhere online that PG said he bought it from ebay and the guitar inspired him to write the metal riffs in the song ''interaction''. And Buckethead used that guitar around the 90s also.
if you ever check out all his live technical difficulties videos you will notice that he never plays the same solo thats what i love about him! Every one is diff and there all FACE MELTING....this is byfar my favorite tho!
Christ.... They both shred.. Leave it at that.... And there not the only ones! I had a little,.. had to be like 14 or 15 year old kid almost floor me when i was getting strings the other day. He was amazing... And I've given lessons in shred for years.....
I'm just amazed at how he basically improvises a new song from the old!!! I have the original Technical Difficulties on Mp3 and what he plays here are completely different lead lines than the studio recording! Genius!
Debating whether PG's technique is good? Loool xD PG has ALWAYS been my idol in technique! Highest rated comment says someone called it muddy, lol.. Either someone's got hearing loss, or just don't get that much of this song is palm muted. Seriously, PG is faster than Michael Angelo Batio, he just doesn't show it that often.
I understand your opinion.:) When I learned alternate picking,it was pretty difficult, when I got it down I was so happy. But what you can't deny is the note choice and Melodic phrasing of Paul.Combined with his picking style,It emanates that originality he has. Props to Vai as well. He's my 3rd fav guitarists when it comes to Advanced playing.
yea thats just the thing i cant find it on any website let alone youtube but ill keep up the search i have to eventually come across a video of racer x playing this
@nimaside I said technically speaking, Paul is superior. I love both Petrucci and Gilbert, but Petrucci is more fitting in a band than as a stand alone guitarist. Petrucci makes beautiful, enchanting, epic music while Gilbert is more of a solo guy. Both of them are guitar gods, but Gilbert is the most technically impressive of the two. Petrucci makes great music, Gilbert does great shows.
Paul already played with Steve and Joe. Not only di d he hold a candle to those two, but he shined out too. They are all great guitarists dude, but Paul is Paul. You just can't get enough when he does his fast alternate pick runs.:))
when u can shred like that, you can wear a fucking space suit,,, totally insane playing,,, he is amazing
Paul is a real Sonic Samurai. Breathtaking
you can really tell he doesn't shred or play for the fame... he just genuinely loves what he does and it shows in everything he does.
Went to school with him... Was a year ahead of me.... He was a 'trend-setter' then and still is... He stands on his own.... Gilbert's Gilbert. !.... :)
Shredding with musical muscle pushing it forward....PG is simply one of the best at this style.
remeber not all about speed about quality of sound - victory for gilbert in my opinion - breathtaking solo - who agrees?
This is also a nice deviation from his normal version of this song. He is one of the greatest at improv....
gilbert is the man...he is just anbelievable
I like this guy because even when he plays very quickly, it doesn't sound like a bunch of garbled BS. All his riffs have a beautiful sense of melody and all connect like a puzzle, much like classical music. It's wonderful.
love his bodily expression, so relaxed making it look so easy...a walk in the park for Gilbert
I was starting G.I.T. when he was finishing... He had is chops then, like 1991....
He graduated and Racer X was doing live gigs at the Roxy....

Paul doesnt lack his own style! he's like a super clean yngwie that can use arrpeggios for something other then Neo Classical
Best guitarist on the planet. End of story.
Agree 100%.
Paul is the definition of Shredding, that word just comes to your mind when you watch him play!
Gilbert FTW,that's all.
RACER X RULEZ....listen to them and worship the almighty shredder Paul Gilbert

agree , his pick style is so accurate, fast, and clean, it makes him play like god or umm paul gilbert, pity we cant see that
I like paul gilbert because he isnt up his own arse and he seems like just a nice guy.
He wore the space suit as a promo for one of the live preformances he released with his solo band (Space Ship One.) And i you have EVER watched a single paul gilbert interview you would know he is an extremely humble and down to earth guitar player.
MY GOD
He is sooo awesome! If only I could play like that man...
I can never get over this video. His best live version for me ..!!
I just saw him on july the 4 too....AWSOME!!!!PAUL OWNS EVERY OTHER GUITARRIST ALIVE
He's born to this, I wont be able to play like that and still move so much as he does
jeff bowders is so damn good. unappreciated in all PG vids!
my favorite guitarist ever.
napakagaling mo talaga kuya! mag mula noon hanggang sa ngayon ala ka pa ring kupas! pagpatuloy nio lang yan! tsaka bisita naman kau dito sa pilipinas!
@shoter9696 Paul is better in so many ways. A better performer, a cleaner shredder, and his vibrato and phrasing are off the scale. Plus he's such a nice guy!
Majestuoso, uno de mis guitarristas preferidos musica divertida aunada al virtuosismo.
@FanZhai i love malmsteen, but NOBODY on earth plays cleaner than Paul, the way he picks (which is hard as fuck) is what makes him that way
he is really the best guitar player for me!!

Kimoram said it all, PG is getting better over time. Long Live to him!!

i like Him because he has a Real sense of Rithym in his Playing! he is just Great

Bill..
Very nice improvisation at the solo part!!!!! Paul Gilbert!!!!! Very very great!!!!! ^_^
Poor Paul... His ear damage is so bad that he can never go onstage without any headphones anymore.
That guitar is a 1982 Ibanez Series X Rocket Roll II. I remember somewhere online that PG said he bought it from ebay and the guitar inspired him to write the metal riffs in the song ''interaction''. And Buckethead used that guitar around the 90s also.

oh man, i just love seeing him do his trademark lick with tapping in D major..
Incredible
he's a pretty tall guy, about 6'4". He also has huge hands, so i guess thats what makes his guitar look so small.
The best!
Paul Gilbert owns you at life.
Bass drum in this video sounds beastly
Very good song..
I'm just amazed at how he basically improvises a new song from the old!!! I have the original Technical Difficulties on Mp3 and what he plays here are completely different lead lines than the studio recording! Genius!
Very accurate, very nice.
3:08 - 3:18 is my favourite lick ..!! One of the most amazing sounds a guitar can make ..!!
Debating whether PG's technique is good? Loool xD
