I can 100% relate to this video, i felt very bad when i finally found out that i had been underpricing myself for over 3 years, but anyways i finally have the knowledge and that's what matters.

Hi Laura! Thanks for sharing this information as it's extremely important! When I worked as a freelance makeup artist, I experienced this very thing. I noticed when it came time to replenish items in my pro kit, I had to use money from my day job to pay for them. The prices for services I was charging clients were too low and therefore could not sustain my side gig. Thanks again, Laura! Big love from the Big Apple! 🥰

You’re most welcome! 🙏🏼 That’s actually so true. Sometimes we don’t realise about how much we undervalue our work till we see our monthly expenses towards our business. 😅
Thank you so much for sharing your experience. And loads of love all the way to NY! 😍

Laura - I basically agree with your assertion, but there are exceptions. Very long story cut short, but the promoter here in my major city, in Western Australia, organises all of the huge events and gigs, for our city. For years, I tagged along in the shadows, sneaking in where I didn't belong, taking photos where I could, getting kicked out by security. I finally met her and got her contact and in 2017, I sent her a whole bunch of free photos. I heard nothing from her. The next year, I did the same thing - getting kicked out by security, never giving up, sending her more free photos, never hearing back. I did this for more than three years - it was quite discouraging. Finally, four years ago, she contacted me and asked if I could do a paid shoot for her. She was so pleased with my work, she got rid of all her photographers, and now I am her only photographer and cover all the big events here in this area of Western Australia. I was shooting all day yesterday for the Blessing of the Fleet, here in Wa. There were thousands of people there and it was an awesome shoot - and I'm going through the images now. I'm booked up already for more shoots this year and a whole lot more next year. Through her contact, I also am now the photographer for Dragon Boats WA. They have booked me for two weekend shoots coming up. Plus I get all the sales of the images of people coming to me looking for their photos. Plus, I can use all the awesome images I take, on my website and in my portfolio. If I had not given away free photos, I'd still be lurking around in the shadows, discouraged and a miserable amateur. There are times that it works.

I went from 75€ to 250€/hr minimum for event coverage and I noticed a huge shift in the types of clients that book me. I also notice how I get taken more serious after increasing my prices.
Really looking forward to the courses!

Greetings, Laura!🤗 This is such a great topic. I have a somewhat similar experience with my real estate photography business. Essentially as I’m somewhat new to this industry and out of gratitude for the volume of business from this agent, I’ve noticed that I have allowed this person to cause me to basically change my entire workflow. From things like making the seller the direct client instead of the agent, to not requiring payment at the time of delivery, but at the Closing instead.
And I decided that enough is enough. While I appreciate the business I receive from them, they will have to comply with my processes or they can just use someone else.
Even though it’s not exactly the same situation as charging or not charging, I feel like it’s still a scenario of me not taking charge and valuing myself, my work and workflow and will probably continue to have this agent expect more compromises from me in the future.
Sending love from the States! ❤

Hey Laura! Thank you so much for this eye-opening video! As a photographer, I've definitely fallen into the trap of undercharging and doing too many free shoots. Your story about the London DJ client was such a powerful wake-up call - it really shows how we can unknowingly undervalue ourselves. I love your practical suggestions, especially about setting a minimum price from the start and doing strategic collaborations that actually benefit our portfolio. Your authenticity in sharing your own journey and mistakes makes this advice so much more relatable. Really excited about your upcoming course too! This is exactly the kind of business guidance many of us photographers need. Thanks for always keeping it real and helping us grow! 🙌📸

Experiencing a little bit of this right now. I did a free shoot for a dancer, in exchange for the right to use the photos for my portfolio. Other folks, in that same field found out and now want free shoots. Nobody wants to pay. I should’ve had a nondisclosure agreement. Do you live in you learn

The difference between you and those click bait photographers on here. You care about the beginner photographers, you want to help them develop and grow as artists. The click bait photographers just want to get more and more subscribers on their channel. Frankly, they're not worth five dollars you find in the street gutter. Keep up the great work.
