Microsoft is having massive trouble allocating resources efficiently. They have spend many years trying to reinvent themselves multiple times and it has resulted in mostly failure, they still are mainly just the computer software company. Due to being profitable in a few key areas they will likely survive just fine, but it's pretty clear that they do not know what they are doing.
The Activision acquisition wasn't only about COD... their mobile division makes significantly more money. Gamepass is a terrible model for developers though. A new AAA game that just launched would have the same value as a 20 year old game that is also on Gamepass. Gamepass games miss out on the typical sales spike most new games get and overall consumer behaviour adjusts to renting
The problem with sbmm is that it caters to the most casual low-skill portion of the fanbase. I have found thousands of people agreeing that xdefiant is bad because it lacks sbmm in casual modes. I have no hope for the future of shooters with the direction they’re going.
Most of the people bitching about the presence of SBMM would get smoked without it. Xdefiant will have to implement some version of SBMM at some point because of it's revenue model. Low-skill players wont stick around to be cannon fodder. They will go back to CoD or go play something else. Players cant buy skins from your store if they're not logging in. There's far too many videos of folks bragging about winning 19 out of 20 matches, or dropping 35 kills - which means there are folks on the other side of the equation who are convinced the game sucks because of their experience. SBMM doesn't just factor in your skill level - there are multiple components to it. There's a blog post from earlier this year on how it works.
I agree, gamepass is not good for the industry. I'm surprised so many people root for it when we have already seen how subscription services turn out with the low quality slop pushed by netflix/amazon prime/etc
I dont think its so bad because if people buy it then nothing would be wrong and we wouldnt be saying anything if xbox met there goal of 100m ganepass people but if gamepass causes xbox as a whole to close? then thats bad cause sony would 100000% improve their own and will definitely increase games from 70$ to because the only other competition is nintendo and they know people will always buy there games and would follow suit
How could you be surprised? The value proposition for people who play actual games is unrivaled. There's almost 500 games on gamepass for console and over 400 for PC. The value proposition has to be there for the developers as well or they wouldn't be entering into agreements with Microsoft. I've discovered tons of great games over the last year alone - stuff I wouldn't have risked buying.
@opathoris That is the problem in a nutshell. Gamepass is great *short term* for us consumers because it's a steal of a deal if you play a lot of games. Gamepass is good for 3rd party developers because they get a guaranteed profit on their game. It is not a good deal for Microsoft/Xbox though, if you look closely at how much they are spending to get and keep games on gamepass vs how much they actually make through subscriptions you will see its not profitable. The problem is that Microsoft will either increase gamepass prices over time to compensate, and/or they will start to bring cheaper and cheaper games over to compensate for their overall profit loss on gamepass. So what once was a good deal for us turns into tons of low quality slop and increased subscription prices. This is the exact cycle netflix, Amazon prime, etc have gone through
@@opathoris How many players who subscribe to gamepass actually get their moneys worth. If you compare the prices of games on pc to the console stores you will eventually save money, even if you spend a lot building a PC. My point is that some of the people who buy gamepass spend 90 percent of their time playing fortnight anyways. Those people are not getting value out of gamepass. Gamepass only seems good because console players are so used to getting it up the arse.
@@malachor5ve Gamepass generates $3-4 Billion per year in revenue. Microsoft is not paying 10 million on average for each game in the catalog, so it’s a safe assumption MS is generating some free cash flow from GamePass. Moreover, Microsoft outright owns a large portion of the games in the catalog. Gamepass is additive to the overall Microsoft operating margin. The average review score of the gamepass catalog is higher than that of Steam. Microsoft doesn’t let just anything on GP. Microsoft didn’t become the most valuable company in the world by accident. I’ve seen this argument about how GamePass hurts consumers and the game industry. It’s nonsense. Long term, it helps devs that would have gone under otherwise. I am cheering this decision on because I have wanted the Call of Duty franchise to die for over half a decade now and this is the best chance I'll get even close to that.
The difference between microsoft and sony is huge. Microsoft's gaming division can hemorrhage money constantly because they provide every major institution with software. Hopefully we are seeing the end of consoles, PCs are becoming cheaper to build again and you can get much better deals on games via the steam and other stores. When gamepass first came out I thought it could be a good thing. After seeing what has happened with redfall and Back 4 Blood I realized just how bad it actually is. The only reason people are still subscribed to gamepass is because it comes with xbox live, which is needed to play games online (unless it is free to play quite ironically). What we are seeing almost seems like an intentional disruption of the market by Microsoft. They are using their almost infinite coffers to buy out competitors and then shut them down.
