After enduring a bunch of other garbage youtube instructionals, I actually learned the most from this. Card games attract nerds with a crappy distracting sense of humor, & can’t communicate core basics over exceptions. This actually shows gameplay long enough to see the game instead of digesting a bunch of pseudoinstructional geek jargon
Im super late into the game haha but I really appreciate the videos you put out. I’m trying to learn how to play since my boyfriend loves Yugioh. Your videos are very helpful!!
My uncle has won thousands of competitions worldwide. My uncle is ranked 42nd Best Duelest in the world. He created a team (Team Overdose) with the best yugioh players n the world now! You really helped me. I want to be just like him.
Dear sir there are more yugioh series's ,the original came out 1996,literrally is writen down on one of the corners of every card :/ some reasearch doesnt hurt :P Sorry if i made eny mistakes in writing, thank you
Finally some one that can explain in plain text. Why does every other video skip the majority of what you explained and just start talking about crap...
my bf is really good at this game, and well i wanted to learn this so i could know what he is usually talking about this, seeing the video once has already helped! THANKS!!!
Very nice video the only thing that I think was missed was what happens during battle phase if your monster's atk is lower then your opponent's monster's def. Again thank you for the video!
1 you can now both control a field spell, game mechanics no longer destroy them. 2 you no longer draw 6 cards on the very first turn, you just draw 5, the second player on his turn draws a card
thanks this helps out sooooooooo much. i have a friend that has never been defeated. and he is the best in his school. he has won like 300 times and i want to be the first to beat him.
One's older then the other. The Extra Deck zone USED to be called the Fusion Deck as they were the only monster types that went there up until Synchro monsters were released.
This is true. It is rare for a deck to not run 15 cards in the Extra Deck with the introduction of Xyz monsters. I believe I spoke with that mindset at the forefront.
That rule of the Side Deck was from the past. Since the release of The Duelist Genesis, you're allowed to have any number between 0-15 in your Side Deck as well.
You cant draw a card on your first turn. Plus i had anothwr question so if i play one monster with a effect that says once oer turn and special summon the same monster can i use the its effect on the second one?
No. The Side Deck (which is what you're thinking of) is different from the Extra Deck. The Extra Deck is for Xyz/Synchro/Fusions. The Side Deck is for adjustments to your deck mid-game. Both decks need to contain 15 cards.
One thing u said if def is bigger than attack nothing is destroyed but the attack takes the difference as damage. Does the differences in damage, damage the monster or both monster and owner
I’m a bit confused. They say Main Phase 1 and 2 are pretty much the same, but in Main Phase 2 your options are more limited based on your choices in Main Phase 1. So what can you do in Main Phase 2 depending on your choices in Main Phase 1?
Everything you can do in main phase 1, you can do in main phase 2, subject to the constraint that you only have 1 normal summon per turn (so if you normal summoned in MP1, you can't in MP2; but if you did not normal summon in MP1, you can normal summon in MP2). Regarding spell and trap cards and monster effects, you can literally do anything that you can do in MP1 as well in MP2 (unless the specific effects of aforementioned cards explicitly specify that it must be done in either MP1 or MP2).
this helped a lot i literally took a piece of notebook paper and took notes on this XD also can xyz monsters be in your normal deck or do they have to be in a extra deck?
when it comes to tributing monsters do the two monsters you tribute for lets say a level 7 card have to add up to those & stars. (Tribute a level 4 and 3) ?
You can place as many spell/traps on your side of the field during either/both main phases as the spell/trap zone allows (i.e. 5). Same with monsters, but again is limited by the "1 normal summon or set per turn" rule (unless you have a card effects that allows you to perform more than 1 normal summon).
but what i dont understand is in the yugioh series yugi pulla a dark M. and just places it straight away and kaiba pulls out 3 blue eyes white dragon is the only for the series or ia the because they are yellow cards?
There's a pro/con relationship where yellows tend to be stronger in head-on battle than oranges of the same level, (Compare Gene-warped Warwolf to Kycoo the Ghost Destroyer) but that stopped being relevant in the mid-2000's. Now they can serve as fuel for cards of other colors that have great power at the cost of using yellow as a resource. (Rescue Rabbit, Advanced Ritual Art, Tyrant's Throes)
I have one question. When I got some cards it came with a mat that had a fusion deck zone but when my friend got some cards it came with a mat that had an extra deck zone. What is the difference between these two mats?
If the defense of the attacked monster is greater than the attack of the attacking monster than the monster with the lesser number gets the difference between them and the difference between those two numbers means how many LP or life points the player will loose and the monster with the lower attack or defense gets destroyed if the two have the same attack and defense they are both destroyed I hope that helped
11:45 Wait, the rulebook says "IMPORTANT: The player who goes first cannot draw during the Draw Phase of their first turn" So you DON'T start with 6 cards if you're the first player. Did the rules change? Source: img.yugioh-card.com/en/rulebook/SD_RuleBook_EN_10.pdf
That's the legal amount of cards you could have in a tournament shoot you could play with 180 cards against your friends but you wouldn't be able to play with anything less than 40 cards or anything more than 60 cards in a TOURNAMENT playing against your friends is fine however many you like unless there is a certain rule your friend makes
+Rockman02 you can play spell/trap cards 2 times per turn but you can not immediately activate trap cards spells you can. Traps you have to wait till your next turn to play. With the exception of it being able to be played during the opponent's turn which it should say on the card for example: if it says on the card "during either players turn" or "if your monster attacks or is attacked you can activate this trap card" so yeah...
Yes you can set as many as you want. You can activate spell cards even after you set them unless they're a quick play spell. Traps can only be activated after they've been set and the turn has ended
Yea quick play spell cards are essentially trap cards but can also be activated from your hand on your turn but have to be set if you want to use them on your opponents turn.
Awesome video! Feel free to join my Duel Academy if you’re trying to learn how to play. There will be lessons, tests, and promotion opportunities. Hope to see you there!
***** that is for xyz, fusion, ritual and sicro summoning as a level 5 needs 1 tribute and 7 up 2 monsters and so on not all cards say what you need to summon them
( 10:14 ) You write that an 'Extra Deck' can ONLY contain Fusion/Synchro/Xyz monsters, but... isn't the goal of the extra decj to be able to make adjustments to your deck between duels ? Meaning that OTHER cards can also fill the Extra Deck, no ?
the extra deck is the deck meant to store those cards (as well as link cards) you're thinking of the side deck, which can hold 15 cards used to adjust your deck between duels
matthew hindle No you are incorrect. Listen to GoggleCandy here, he's the one teaching. All monsters that are level 7 or higher need 2 tributes. If the card says it needs 3, it will say so.
Yes and no. Yu-Gi-Oh is driven more by rules and less by effect text. Magic is driven more by card text, but if you're new to Magic there are a lot of keywords you need to learn. Both are relatively the same difficulty though IMO.
He's right in this regard i suppose. MTG is a game with very defined rules but with plenty of cards that bend or even straight out break those rules. I would say MTG is the more difficult of the two to become proficient at though given the insane amount of cards that have been released over the past 20 some odd years. It is also the much more competitive and sanctioned of the two, with high level competitions with equally relevant prize payouts (Think around like $25-50,000 for the highest level events) happening nearly every weekend. There's varying levels of depth to MTG though, depending on how invested you want to become in it, which I feel yu gi oh doesn't really have. If you want to stay casual but with a bit of competition you can draft. If you want to get competitive but don't have a $1,000+ for deckbuilding then you can generally go standard. If you want to get into the upper, extremely competitive echelons you have legacy, with decklists reaching the $2-3000 range. While it may seem expensive, the good thing is that those cards not only hold but continue to grow their value. If you want a game for life, play MTG.
After enduring a bunch of other garbage youtube instructionals, I actually learned the most from this.

I was looking for a hobby to do with some friends and we started playing this game. Never thought i'd play yugioh but it's actually pretty fun :)
do you live in Michagan because if you do then I need to know were because I got Yu-gi-oh cards.
Joseph Simmons Michigan Buddies. Also what cards are we talkin?
you would have to c 4 ur self what im trading
Me anf my friend are doing exact same thing
I'm a total noob, and found this video VERY helpful and informative! Very good job, sir. :)
Nice
I can't believe i forgot so much.
Im super late into the game haha but I really appreciate the videos you put out. I’m trying to learn how to play since my boyfriend loves Yugioh. Your videos are very helpful!!
The only helpful videos on this game... I finally sort of understand. Thank you!
Thanks for the video! My boyfriend's been playing for a long time and I wanna try to impress him with some basis of knowledge.
thanks for the help it was vary useful a lot less complicated then other videos
My uncle has won thousands of competitions worldwide. My uncle is ranked 42nd Best Duelest in the world. He created a team (Team Overdose) with the best yugioh players n the world now! You really helped me. I want to be just like him.
my brain is processing if this is fake or real xD
amazingly real XD he retired in 2007
dude, not true do :P yugioh was out earlier, years earlier :P
Dear sir there are more yugioh series's ,the original came out 1996,literrally is writen down on one of the corners of every card :/ some reasearch doesnt hurt :P
Sorry if i made eny mistakes in writing, thank you
sounds fake
i already know how to play i'm basically a pro but i just wanted to see how you explained it and you did a great job =) on to part 2!!!!!!!
That really helped before this vid I had no idea what I was doin thanks a lot
Your a good teacher iv'e been playing the game for a year now and i learned some new things to
just for this im subbing, thank you for helping me teach my friends!
Finally some one that can explain in plain text. Why does every other video skip the majority of what you explained and just start talking about crap...
Excellent beginner tutorial 👏🏻 very helpful 👍🏻
I love how u flick the crds against the table
my bf is really good at this game, and well i wanted to learn this so i could know what he is usually talking about this, seeing the video once has already helped! THANKS!!!
this vid has helped me alot
Keep up the fantastic work man
Great video thank you for existing

this vid was made 2011! lol the game has changed so much
this is very hard to understand but im going to up all night trying to understand it :D
thanks this helps out sooooooooo much. i have a friend that has never been defeated. and he is the best in his school. he has won like 300 times and i want to be the first to beat him.

Thanks. I found this sooooooooo helpful
The normal deck is what you draw and play from. The extra deck is for storing synchro, fusion, and Xyz.
really I SHOULD be writing this but
I'll study up on everything this weekend
You cant draw a card on your first turn. Plus i had anothwr question so if i play one monster with a effect that says once oer turn and special summon the same monster can i use the its effect on the second one?
Great tutorial!
Magic the Gathering is so much simpler then this game. I dont want to offend anyone but its true.
witchy boy its true
You...realize the game is a ripoff of MTG right? They admitted it themselves
What happens if i dont have 15 cards to put in the extra deck?
When he said 'normal summon face-down', he meant 'set'. A monster being played face-down is NOT a summon.
No. The Side Deck (which is what you're thinking of) is different from the Extra Deck. The Extra Deck is for Xyz/Synchro/Fusions. The Side Deck is for adjustments to your deck mid-game. Both decks need to contain 15 cards.
Thank you my son just taken up playing this and I don't have a clue
Very helpful
One thing u said if def is bigger than attack nothing is destroyed but the attack takes the difference as damage. Does the differences in damage, damage the monster or both monster and owner
Thanks I learned a lot
so the person who goes first has an advantage because the other person cant defend because you just start a new layne is this correct?
I’m a bit confused. They say Main Phase 1 and 2 are pretty much the same,
but in Main Phase 2 your options are more limited based on your choices

when it comes to tributing monsters do the two monsters you tribute for lets say a level 7 card have to add up to those & stars. (Tribute a level 4 and 3) ?
for tributes stars(levels) don't matter only for synchro and xyz summoning not ritual (in most cases)
Yes. The only rule is that if you DO have an Extra Deck, it has to be 15 cards. It's either all there or not.
How many monster/spells/traps can you put on the field during main phase?
You can place as many spell/traps on your side of the field during either/both main phases as the spell/trap zone allows (i.e. 5). No. They can't be normal summoned without tributes.
Also, no yugioh player ever trusts what the anime does because it has it's own specific rules.
I'd just like to point out that the Extra deck can have anything between 1-15. It doesn't have to be exactly 15, that's the side deck.
where did you get thoes card sleeves from
You can play online
websites like duelingnetwork
or you can search youtube for download ones
what's the point in the yellow cards if they dont have an effect on anything?
There's a pro/con relationship where yellows tend to be stronger in head-on battle than oranges of the same level, (Compare Gene-warped Warwolf to Kycoo the Ghost Destroyer) but that stopped being relevant in the mid-2000's. Thnx learned alot
Now I get it! Thank you!
I have one question. When I got some cards it came with a mat that had a fusion deck zone but when my friend got some cards it came with a mat that had an extra deck zone. What is the difference between these two mats?
what I don't understand if it's in defence mode and it gets attacked what happens if it's def is greater or smaller
Yandere Kun thx man but already know how to play yugioh but your comment can help other people
hey see ... can i battle without the extra deck?? cuz i dnt hav the xyz , synchro cards .. and as iam in a country which doesnt sell them ..
11:45 Wait, the rulebook says
"IMPORTANT: The player who goes first cannot draw during the
Draw Phase of their first turn"
So you DON'T start with 6 cards if you're the first player. Did the rules change?
Source: img.yugioh-card.com/en/rulebook/SD_RuleBook_EN_10.pdf
so let me get this strait. You can play any level card even like a level 7 card any time you want unless you neeed to sacrafise a card
No. Level 5-6 require 1 tribute and level 7+ require 2 tributes unless otherwise specified on the card
GoggleCandy oh thanks for the corection(i meant that in a thank you way not in a dick way)
no you can only play 4 or less stars with out a sacrifice
is it bad that I don't know how to ritual summon
ive thought its between 40-60 cards that you can have on your deck
It is. Surprising how quickly one needs to redo his how-to videos.
Ser Walt it is but 40 is the most recommended
40-45 is the best to run but like that guy said 40 is the best
That's the legal amount of cards you could have in a tournament shoot you could play with 180 cards against your friends but you wouldn't be able to play with anything less than 40 cards or anything more than 60 cards in a TOURNAMENT playing against your friends is fine however many you like unless there is a certain rule your friend makes
When making a deck can you have multiple copies of the same card in your deck?
u can have up to 3 copies of the same card
+Sora6645 oh thanks I didn't know that
In a tournament you can't have more than 3 copies of one monster, spell, or trap card you can have 3 copies but not more than 3
Can you normal summon and set a monster face down in the same turn?
No. But you can summon a monster facedown (this is called a flip summon) into atk and normal summon at the same turn.
I'm a beginner and I have a Lightsworn deck is it good idea?
+Team Critical well if he has the clown engine with it its pretty good with a lot level four xyz's I run it all the time on ygopro
If you are the very first person to start the game then you can't draw until your next turn right?
Yea it's a new rule they added. Whoever goes first doesn't get to draw a card so they start with 5.
Cheyenne French person who goes 1st dosent draw or attack 2nd player dose
Also, both players can now control a field card at once.
Isn't it when the attack is equal to the defense or when the attack is equal to another monsters attack both of those monsters are destroyed?
this is problably a dumbass question to ask but whan do you play or activate spell or trap?
+Rockman02 you can play spell/trap cards 2 times per turn but you can not immediately activate trap cards spells you can. Traps you have to wait till your next turn to play. With the exception of it being able to be played during the opponent's turn which it should say on the card for example: if it says on the card "during either players turn" or "if your monster attacks or is attacked you can activate this trap card" so yeah...
WOW THE BEST
Well this should be a good example
There is another trap card called counter counter or something like that where you can counter... A counter attack
in you turn can you set as many traps and spells as the 5 cards it can hold?
Yes you can set as many as you want. You can activate spell cards even after you set them unless they're a quick play spell. Traps can only be activated after they've been set and the turn has ended
HirukoSenju ok thanks
Yea quick play spell cards are essentially trap cards but can also be activated from your hand on your turn but have to be set if you want to use them on your opponents turn.
What are the names for the covers for the cards and where can i get them
Google it
Card sleeves is what you mean? If it is then card stores or online.
Nice. Yes I meant card sleeves, I already bought the starter deck and card sleeves
Emmanuel Gutierrez
Cool. I was too late though. Still you didn't need the help so its all good.
Awesome video! Feel free to join my Duel Academy if you’re trying to learn how to play. There will be lessons, tests, and promotion opportunities. Hope to see you there!
Exodia the forbidden one with all the forbidden pieces makes you automatically win the game
there is a new rule now both people can have an active field spell
So i can't have a side deck from 1 to 14 cards?
Ty!!!!
NOW you can SPECIAL SUMMON AS MUCH AS YOU WANT haha.
You know alot of Yu - Gi -Oh !
Thnk uu
Thanks im still learning but i've build my deck 20 moster cards m best 22 spell 18 trap
Should play 20 monsters and 10 spells and 10 traps
That rainbow dash button, brohoof /)
What is a special summon?
***** that is for xyz, fusion, ritual and sicro summoning as a level 5 needs 1 tribute and 7 up 2 monsters and so on not all cards say what you need to summon them
Damn I forgot how to play you-gi-oh😂😂😅
what is battle face
9:58 CORRECTION it should be 40-60 cards
thx :)
I just started I'm a noob so I just think the. game is cool
( 10:14 ) You write that an 'Extra Deck' can ONLY contain Fusion/Synchro/Xyz monsters, but... isn't the goal of the extra decj to be able to make adjustments to your deck between duels ?
Meaning that OTHER cards can also fill the Extra Deck, no ?
the extra deck is the deck meant to store those cards (as well as link cards) you're thinking of the side deck, which can hold 15 cards used to adjust your deck between duels
you forgot if the card get up to 9+ levels you have to tribute for 3
Incorrect. Unless otherwise noted on the card, all creatures of 7+ levels only require 2 tributes
GoggleCandy incorrect 8+ are 3 tributes not 2
matthew hindle No you are incorrect. Listen to GoggleCandy here, he's the one teaching. All monsters that are level 7 or higher need 2 tributes. If the card says it needs 3, it will say so.
he has swords of reveiling light
so wait, every time my opponent attacks me directly I take 2300 LP.😕sorry I'm still new to yugioh
no if you get attacked directly you lose life points equal to the attacking monster (or card effect) ATKK
Oh thank u😀
I love mlp
You have to hit the monster
+fera thirtytwo I wouldn't use tokens if I were u there is know point in them
To have to buy card sleeve s
XYZ is ECKS-SEE
Is this more complicated than Magic the gathering?
Yes and no. Yu-Gi-Oh is driven more by rules and less by effect text. Magic is driven more by card text, but if you're new to Magic there are a lot of keywords you need to learn. Both are relatively the same difficulty though IMO.
