Teachers in the UK sometimes have to buy stationary and supplies for lessons, depends on what school you work in really. The gift ideas in this video sound spot on. When I got married all the parents in my class clubbed together and I got £100 voucher for John Lewis. Amazingly generous! Thanks to all the parents who are making such a effort for their children’s teachers, we really appreciate it x
My mom was a teacher for 30 years. She has well over two dozen Christmas mugs and another two dozen “best teacher” Christmas ornaments. And honestly most of them don’t get used. When she started teaching she got more gifts but the last years she taught her school system put a cap on teacher gifts to a value of $5 per child. But even a homemade and a $5 Starbucks gift card lets a teacher know you care and lets them have a little treat. And as for American teachers needing school supplies: my mom got $60 a year to supply her classroom. While kids brought supplies from home some kids didn’t have many resources. And by Christmas all the glue sticks are dried up and all the crayons are broken. If you want to donate supplies to the classroom ask what the teacher needs. It may be a new electric pencil sharpener or packs of pencils or packs of lined paper. But there will be something.
I’m a teacher and I appreciate absolutely anything that the children give to me as a gift, as it shows I’ve been thought of and that I’m appreciated. Your gift sounds lovely x
Hi, thanks, I'm a student in the UK and this year, I'm in yr 11 so I would love to give my teacher thank you gifts for all of their support and patience so this video helped me. I was wondering what would y said about giving a teacher a personalised trophy or personalised necklace if they always wear necklace? Thanks
I live in the UAE We love love the British curriculum so lots of schools have native UK teachers and you know people here are wealthy (not all though) only the locals. For my daughter's teacher we collected around 1000$ as a gift voucher
In my experience it's only been an exchange between teachers! I don't really expect to get a present from a child at all - The thing I love the most is a card or even a little note of appreciation - that sentiment is why I keep teaching 💕
I usually enjoy homemade stuff! I had a student make me a jar full of THE best holiday hot cocoa mix ever! Homemade from the heart a traditional family recipe is nearly always wonderful!
Soon I’m not gonna be in year 9 anymore, meaning that I won’t get to see my favourite teacher, she means more than “just a teacher” to me. She’s an inspiration, she has gotten me through so much, I don’t know what I’d do today if it wasn’t for you. I will still get to see her but not as much as I do now. Miss Phillips, if you see this. You truly don’t understand the impact you have made on me and you make me feel like I can do everything I want, history was boring until I met you, you mean everything to me. ~ Maisy
I’m graduating this year, and it came up recently with my English teacher that I like to collect animal bones (because they’re cool and it’s a family tradition) and she was super weirded out by it but also was laughing at it. So of course I made her a fox-tooth necklace.
Dusty Riggin lol that you could get a gun onto a US school campus easier than a bottle of wine. In England you tend to drop your child at the door to their classroom in primary school so may be able to hand it over to the teacher directly
@@louisetrott lol this is tragically/pathetically true. Literally alcohol (along with any drug and even tobacco) isn't allowed anywhere on the campus here... Teachers can get fired for even having it in their car, it's the most ridiculous thing.
That's remarkable!! (The alcohol being in their car thing) I've often received wine as a gift from students (aged 11-16) and it's not with their parents anywhere near, it's just trusted that they will give it and/or wrapped up. Again, UK school btw.
@@MeganVlogz its crazy our laws with alcohol... I remember being a couple years younger than my boyfriend and having to leave the grocery store while he checked out because I was under 21 and they wouldnt sell to him if I was there 🙄
As a secondary school teacher in the UK, I spend a fortune each year on glue sticks, highlighters and packs of paper. Technically, we get a school budget for supplies but in reality this doesn’t stretch past the end of October. My favourite gifts to receive are thoughtful messages from the children I’ve taught and prosecco 😉🥂 xx
not sure if you'll reply but my teacher has saved my life and helped me so much and because i'm in year 11 and had her last year I wrote her a message last year and I did the same this year but I think it's not enough because I already did that but i don't know much about her because she listens to my problems more so do you think something personalised like a painting or something might be good? she gave me this really inspiring metaphor and I thought I could create a painting out of it but I don't know if she'll like it because she's a French teacher not an art.
@@isabellaaslam9372 Aww how lovely! I don’t think it matters that she’s not an art teacher- that sounds like a thoughtful, wonderful gift! @@aamymx thank you so much! I've been struggling to come up with something because I wanted it to be memorable and not something that everyone does (like how most people give chocolates ect) and it's definitely easier hearing from a teacher's perspective what sounds memorable because it's really hard to truly express how much she has done for me and how much she's saved my life. Anyway thank you again :)
Hi! Thank you for preparing this! I am a teacher in the U.S. and what you said was so on point! Your research worked! I am always appreciative of anything, but, I guess because I am in the American group, I don’t like receiving alcoholic beverages because I don’t drink, but it sometimes makes a good gift. Everything you said was true!
I always do a hamper with biscuits, tea, coffee for the staff room and a general thank you card for all the staff, not just teachers, there are other people who support the school like cleaners, reading assistants, admin staff etc. And my girls will write a little Xmas cards for their classroom teacher I might get them a little box of chocolates too. Who does not like chocolate! You can eat it, shear it or regift it! Great video Emily xx
Marta Tustian just want to say thank you so much for acknowledging there’s other people involved in daily school life! I’m a midday supervisor, which I absolutely love doing, but I do feel us ‘non teachers’ aren’t recognised a lot of the time. I am in no way at all saying we all need gifts too, absolutely not, it’s just nice when us other school staff members are noticed too. There are many children in my school who tell me I am their favourite person at school, which melts my heart! Being trusted by small humans to listen to them, sort their problems, turn their tears into laughter, mend friendships, look after their grazed knees and cut hands or simply playing tag with them is such an amazing feeling!
Love it! With Christmas 🎄 around the corner I keep thinking what to give to son’s teacher, speech therapists and audiologists they all work together and have helped him come such a long way!! This are good ideas for the 👎 what not to give them 😊

The US has some very strict ideas about teachers social lives. I've known teachers who have been disciplined for being seen at a local restaurant having margaritas after work, not acting foolish, not drunk, just seen with a drink. We would possible get in trouble for accepting alcohol as a gift, also it would get the parent in trouble to bring it on school grounds. I was taken into my principals office with one of his assistants my first year because some students had gotten a picture of myself and my boyfriend(now husband) off Facebook simply standing together at my cousin's wedding...the students made inappropriate comments about the two of us and I recieved a warning about my social life becoming a distraction. We don't drink. We don't party. We literally were standing in formal attire that was not revealing and smiling at the camera.
Wow Emily, you really did your homework. I am a teacher myself and agree 100% with your recommended gift ideas. Especially appreciate the cards and an honest "Dankeschön". Am German...
Here's an unusual one for you. I live in northern Canada(like WAY NORTH)and am married to a teacher and have worked in schools myself for years. It's not uncommon here for a young teen student to gift some of his first animal hunt to people in his life he admires...ie. his teacher. So my husband has received both moose and caribou roasts-freshly harvested off the land. Highly appreciated where we live.
I recently made a personalised stamp for a teacher friend. But she did ask for it ;-) I think you can kind of put it in the category of school supplies. Because she will use it every day to stamp homework and stuff like that.

lol I panicked cause I gave multiple teachers some perfumes during the christmas party (currently planning for our year end hehe)
Definitely true! Don't get anything that has your child's face on it please, we cannot use it coz it's weird 😅
You just made my night!!!! I have a coffee ☕️ mug with my son’s face in it and not even I use it! People ask too many questions! 😂😂😂😬😬😬
😂. I do buy personalised key-rings with the teachers name on it .
Made me laugh out loud so funny
Bahahaha this is so funny 😂
😂😂😂😂😂😂
So glad I watched this first. I literally crossed off 3 things I put on my list for my daughter's teachers. 🤦🏾♀️
Who else loves her voice
Meee! And her accent is just amazing
As a teacher I would love to receive a nicely chosen christmas tree decoration, with their name and the year written on the back!!!
Oh bugger! Ive done a mug, with Christmas socks in and a chocolate in! 🙊😂 the thought was there x
Holly b yep I did that last year!
I’m a teacher and I appreciate absolutely anything that the children give to me as a gift, as it shows I’ve been thought of and that I’m appreciated. Your gift sounds lovely x
I’ve just made the same thing for my sons teachers too 😂😂
But as a preschool teacher this is something I have loved being given in the past! x
Me too!!
Mugs & homemade food...all things I have done repeatedly...LOL!
Here I am. 3 years after you’ve made this video. 😊
Super helpful tips. I think gas gift cards would be appreciated too
Gas gift cards, wow perfect idea thank you. Agree with you.
Hi, thanks,
I'm a student in the UK and this year, I'm in yr 11 so I would love to give my teacher thank you gifts for all of their support and patience so this video helped me.
I was wondering what would y said about giving a teacher a personalised trophy or personalised necklace if they always wear necklace?
Thanks
I live in the UAE
We love love the British curriculum so lots of schools have native UK teachers and you know people here are wealthy (not all though) only the locals. For my daughter's teacher we collected around 1000$ as a gift voucher
Best video ever! 😅😀 🤣 love you Emily! ❤️ You saved me from a disaster! 😎
So of course I made her a fox-tooth necklace.
yh a little weird.....
and white people call us barbarians
daemosthenese
bro you weird..
It’s not weird unless it’s human bones other than tht everyone has different things they like
In the US I'm not even sure how you could legally give wine... it cant be on campus and you OBVIOUSLY cant send it with your kid
I remember being a couple years younger than my boyfriend and having to leave the grocery store while he checked out because I was under 21 and they wouldnt sell to him if I was there 🙄
I’m a teacher in the US, and I’ve received beer and wine as gifts from parents. They just wrap it in a box so admin doesn’t know what it is 🤷🏼♀️
Can i just say I would LOVE a mum like Emily. Everyone needs an emily in there life !xxx
I’m an English teacher and if one of my students gave me such a thoughtful gift, I’d be over the moon! (And probably quite emotional!! 😂) I’m absolutely certain that she would treasure that gift! 💗
I have only gotten the do not like stuff. Omg.. thanks for this!
Being trusted by small humans to listen to them, sort their problems, turn their tears into laughter, mend friendships, look after their grazed knees and cut hands or simply playing tag with them is such an amazing feeling!
love the staff room hamper idea!
Sorry... off topic... you look amazing! Where is your sweater from?
Love it! With Christmas 🎄 around the corner I keep thinking what to give to son’s teacher, speech therapists and audiologists they all work together and have helped him come such a long way!! This are good ideas for the 👎 what not to give them 😊
I always give my kids teachers a thank you note with a gift card to either Amazon or Starbucks. Glad I’ve been doing the right thing. 😁
This is ace!!! I’m going to video and interview with my girls all about what they like at school and their teacher and send them that. They’re too little to write but they can articulate how they feel 🥰
I'm going to get my teaching degree and move to the UAE. Lol thanks for sharing. This is my first time and your list of dos and don't is helpful.
I'm a parent but it tottaly makes sense and i needed some reassurance on what to get for teachers. So thank you for the research and sharing the results! 🎉🎉🎉
Teachers love scented candles and chocolate and also cards
Tbh I think teachers should just be grateful for the fact they got something and not say “oh I don’t want a mug”uNgRaTeFuL A lot of kids don’t even bother so they should just appreciate it
Sorry but who gives teachers CLOTHES??!😂❤️
I agree lol but I'm kinda thinking that includes like scarves and stuff haha
I received a pair of leggings from a family last year! At least they were cute...😂❤ ~Jess
My friend received a going out dress from a family who owns a clothes shop but it was two sizes too big. She was very offended! 😆
Dusty Riggin ah yes didn’t think of that!!
Deirdre O'connor ahaha
This is fabulous and very helpful! Thank you Emily. I have a first grader (United States) who is my only child so this is only my second year to buy for a teacher and I am at a loss. This helps so much! xoxo

I have been a teacher for 5 years and my absolutely favorite is a note from parents a picture the child makes and a gift card. Those are the ones I really love!
I was a pre school/ creche manager for 14 years and I can't agree with u enough! I've two letters I've kept all these years later. One from a child with a drawing, and another from parent who really said how much she appreciated me and was really heart felt. I give a gift vouchers at the end of the year just €20 so they can decide if they want choc, wine r Pjs! Xmas I get a Xmas tree decoration( usually from a charity) as I loved to receive them and a handwritten card from my kids. Last year one of my girls teachers loved roald dahl so I got him the treasury book with a little note inside- my girl said he loved it and read parts to his class n kept in the classroom and hopefully he n many kids can enjoy . When my kids where in creche I used to buy a popular nursery book as I loved reading stories as a teacher and always was buying some for my class so I knew I'd appreciate that. Simple n thoughtful is always the way . And I always appreciate a card with a little message much more than any gift I've recieved x brilliant video never seen anything like this b4 n lovely u got info from teachers 😊
When I was younger both my parents were teachers and they NEVER had to buy chocolate at Christmas, it all came from others! The mugs and tat just used to go in the bin... they always felt bad but there was just no room for it!
Omg Emily, it's like you've read my mind. This video is so timely and so useful. I was planning to bake something for my son's teachers. So glad for your video because I'd much rather get something that they will enjoy.
Brilliant idea! Love it!
I am a teacher and i totally agree 😊
Most hated gift by me is definitely flowers.
Gratitude is always the gift that warms my heart.
Keep up the good work, i love watching vlogmas on your channel! 🤗😘
I'm daily concidering what to get for my sons preschool teacher, they are amazing people and deserve sooo much for taking care of the most important I have in my life.
Being a teacher myself (before I changed career) the thing I loved most was when parents or kids took time in their everyday life to spend a few extra minutes at pick up to tell me how much they appreciated the work I put in.
I’m not a teacher but I’m on the same page about gifts with them!
This was such a welcomed video. I have been agonizing over what to get sons first ever teacher who is a superstar. This is great!! Thanks Emily and all the honest hardworking teachers out there 😊
Umm, is no one going to mention the Arabian teachers receiving cars?...
moswah99 I wouldn’t even want a car lol I love my car and wouldn’t trade it for anything
moswah99
Being an Arab myself I’m gonna assure you that we don’t gift teachers cars.. it’s just stereotypes
Ehh maybe beacause they don't. Ive never seen any arab teacher getting a car we are not that rich its really just stereotypes.
And people from arabic countries are called arabs not arabians
Just in time! Im searching for some inspiration and your video just came UP 💖
Tysvm for this it helped me so very much I wanna try this to my strict teacher so that she can hopefully change and know that she's still appreciated and is still a super duper very great teacher💜💚☺💚💜
Emily I have only recently discovered your channel as I’m expecting my first and I found your newborn essentials video... I am now addicted to all your videos! I can’t wait to have a lovely little family like yours 💕 p.s. you really do have the loveliest voice!
When did this become a thing to give gifts to teachers? We never did as kids and this puts a lot of pressure on parents who are unable to afford it. Must also be hard on the children who haven't got a gift as it points them out as different. I find it a very weird thing to do.x
100% agree x
Totally agree!
It's a thing since it's nice to be appreciative of all the work teachers do teaching and caring for your child. A thank you note is free...just saying
-_-...She made it clear they don't expect presents, that the thing they loved most was a heartfelt note. I think that is the least you can do. They take care of your kid all year and do way more than they are paid for.
First time round buying gift for nursery teacher... Got a lovely card and a 2pack of novelty xmas socks in a nice little box from M+S.... So glad socks didnt show on ur what not to buy list lol.... Well maybe it falls under clothes....?!?! Great video, always perfect timing too xx
socks are one of those things that will always get used, I always appreciate them! Even if they're a weird style or whatever, you can wear them at home/have shoes on when you go out
Such a helpful video. now i know what not to get my kid's teachers. Love your sweater and the golden buttons, where can i find this?
Where is your lovely polo neck from? Such good advice, thanks!
I was just thinking about purchasing their gifts and dreading looking and guessing! Thanks for the vid! Also guilty of the no nos.😩
Couldn't agree more with the "know who you're buying for!" My fiance is a teacher and we are vegan and she often gets bought chocolate and I work in special needs kids transport and I often get chocolate, cakes or non vegan candles and it feels so mean to give it away x
Bless you Emily! I was just stressing about what to buy my daughters nursery teacher (this is the first time I am buying a gift for a teacher)
And I thought ‘has Emily done a video on this previously?’ And then the title popped up on my screen! 😀👍
I’m going to get my teacher something for her birthday and I wasn’t sure what but I got a idea now I’m planning a card about how nice she is and either a gift card for Starbucks or a reusable cup because she always get it….! 😂❤🎉🤭😄🥳☺️👍
Thank you! I so needed help with this subject 👍🏼I need to get my sons teacher something
It’s so true, a message of genuine thanks is so awesome. I keep them all ❤
It's currently teachers appreciation week and i decided to buy my sons teacher lunch for tomorrow. I decided to pair it with a gift card and some school supplies (pens, expor markers, etc). Its not a lot but I figured it beats a mug lol
So I got my daughter’s teacher a very nice mini designers hand bag for Xmas and a lovely timex wrist watch for teachers appreciation, is that suppose to be a bad idea?🤣🤣 learning...
Emily you are a life saver. You don't know how many times you saved me. I am not only a first time mom but also new to UK. Your videos are so much helpful and full of informations. A big hug from me. Love from Scotland 💓
Ted's preschool teacher used to love my homemade biscuits. I gave them to three teachers and they all loved them. I can't believe they said that. Good video but very disappointed in the no homemade food. :-((( xxx
Alexis Knibbs As a teacher with food allergies I appreciate the effort but cannot eat food prepared by students/families. I share them in the staffroom instead - biscuits, brownies and cakes are much appreciated but savouries and whole meals aren't popular.
Alexis Knibbs all depends. At the private school I taught in before, every teacher looked forward to one family's Christmas treats. They are still something I wish I got! I'm in a huge public school and I wouldn't trust what students/parents make.
@@roxanneguerin6520 Hi Roxanne, That's good to know. I actually have a gluten allergy and I'm not very good on diary either so I make my biscuits gluten and diary free. Occasionally I'll make them vegan too. However, I have to use nuts in them so they aren't nut free. I always tell the teacher or person I'm giving them to that they contain nuts just in case. Sorry to spam you on a reply but if you suffer with gluten or diary free allergies like me then I have a blog www.googieskitchenlife.com that has lots of gluten and diary free recipes. Plus I also cook lots of those recipes on my channel too. Thank you again for that information, again good to know,.
@@blciffa Ha, ha! Yes I suppose you have to get to know the teacher and then you can tell if they would like homemade gifts or not. I'm always telling people on my channel how much Ted's preschool teachers appreciated the biscuits I made for them. If any teachers watch it they might not be thinking the same thing. Hee, hee! Thanks for this info, very helpful and I really appreciate it. xxx
Maybe they told you they loved them because they were being kind and didn't want to come across as unappreciative?
Definitely guilty of giving my teachers mugs back then... lol
But I definitely understand the a letter of gratitude. They don't get paid very well and they're the ones who are in charge of our futures. They deserve more than they're being given, for sure. What a great video, Em! 💕
Brilliant video Emily! I’ve never gave “best teacher” gifts because of the reason you said it would just clutter up there house & would probably not use it, I’m going to stick to wine & a gift voucher 😃 xx
Emily I love your videos so much 💓 💖 💗 Please do a day in the life!
This is so helpful! x
Well... i was strapped for cash so i made a banana cake for my daughters teachers. I feel like a right fool now 😂 its a delicious tasting recipe so i thought i was doing the right thing! Ieven included a page with ingredients due to possible allergies....darn...why couldnt i have seen this 2 weeks ago!
GG and BB banana cake sounds amazing though
When i was a teacher i looooved having little messages from the kids. I still keep them years on in my.memory box
Is it a dozen of cup is suitable to give for the teacher as a gift or not?? And thanks for the video
Ha my first option to give a teacher was a mug with candy 😁 I'm glad I watched this! xo
In the US, the students/parents are responsible for the school supplies, not the teachers. I'm a mother of 5 children. My oldest is 21 years old and my youngest is 2 years old.
Hi!I'm from Romania and in my country we give flowers and jewelry to our teachers and they appreciate them.I think that gift choosing depends from country to country
No mugs, that's for sure!! I do not drink coffee and I ALWAYS get Starbuck's gift cards!! I like to get gift cards to book stores or clothing stores!!
Me thinking about floweres 🤡. This video was alot of help.
This was extremely helpful, with many sources. I'm looking to get a gift for my teacher who is retiring next week. I was actually going to buy her a mug, but was doing research on UA-cam today and everything said that teachers didn't want mugs, so now I know! Thanks for helping me out!
@@hannahcollings6358 ummm..why? Different cultures do things different ways.
I'm a teacher love cards or pictures from pupils. Also love stationary gifts, chocolate/biscuits and candles.
Ooops I always get flowers 😱... Thanx for the heads up lol xxx
Lorna Family Life depends on the teacher!! I love filling my house with flowers. xxx
I love receiving flowers from the kids!!
Me too! I love flowers!
OH Crap I’m laying in my bed avoiding my brother’s watching this vid so you know it’s good👏🏽!!!!!
I recently made a personalised stamp for a teacher friend. But she did ask for it ;-) I think you can kind of put it in the category of school supplies. Because she will use it every day to stamp homework and stuff like that.
Oh dear...I just got my children's teachers mugs, bath bombs and mini Yankees..🤔😂😣
