LOVE AND BASKETBALL MOVIE REACTION |
LOVE AND BASKETBALL MOVIE REVIEW |
Love & Basketball Movie Reaction:
Monica (Sanaa Lathan) and Quincy (Omar Epps) are two childhood friends who both aspire to be professional basketball players. Quincy, whose father, Zeke (Dennis Haysbert), plays for the Los Angeles Clippers, is a natural talent and a born leader. Monica is ferociously competitive but sometimes becomes overly emotional on the court. Over the years, the two begin to fall for each other, but their separate paths to basketball stardom threaten to pull them apart.
Love & Basketball is a 2000 American romantic sports drama film written and directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood (in her feature film directorial debut). The film is produced by Spike Lee and Sam Kit and stars Sanaa Lathan and Omar Epps. It tells the story of Quincy McCall (Epps) and Monica Wright (Lathan), two next-door neighbors in Los Angeles, California, who are pursuing their respective basketball careers before eventually falling for each other.
Love & Basketball was released on April 21, 2000 in the United States. It received positive reviews from critics, with praise directed at the performances (particularly those of Lathan and Epps), Prince-Bythewood's direction and script and the emotional weight of the film. Nevertheless, it grossed $27.7 million worldwide on a production budget of $14-20 million.
Over the years, the film has developed a dedicated following, cementing its place in popular culture, and establishing itself as a cult classic.

"Imagine losing your fiance in some secret midnight basketball game" 😔🤣🤣
I tell you watch Primm hood cinema
😂😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣
Yea; this was a “perfect love story” when I was younger. Later on in life; I realized how toxic this relationship was. Still a great movie & a great soundtrack.
I agree
Toxic? They were teenagers trying to play grown what do you expect
@@brownpapi2634 They in college lmao
It wasn't toxic.. they went through something like all real human beings do
@@Probablylani Like I said....teenagers. He only attended college one year before going pro which makes them still teenagers. They didn't just suddenly mature tremendously after graduating from high school
Sanaa and Omar dated for a few years during and after Love and Basketball. That’s probably why the love scenes looked so believable.
@@reneewade34 They we're never married.
I'm already reaction to Primm's Hood Cinema, Struggle reviewz TV and Gulley Boy about that sport/love/Drama movie.
“I Want to Be Your Man” is a love song for the generations, a timeless classic.
I think it's the late Roger Troutman RIP😥😥😥
Mells frustration towards Quincy was so funny from 19:01 Mel had enough of that lil pettiness 😂😂😂
One thing about 90s black movies: they gonna make you feel the intimacy.. have you thinking “now why am I blushing??🥴”😭💀😂
Yes, Quincy always pissed me off. He acted like such a baby. I know he was spiraling but don’t take it out on the people who are actually there for you.
The best part of this reaction was how Quincy kept getting on your nerves lol!!!! I agreed with everything you said about that character lol. Love the channel and reactions as always ☺️
The fact that Mel took on Monica’s character at 20:18 and said “I was there for you is HILARIOUS!
You better hit them notes Mello!!! I am impressed by the high notes!
PS: It's interesting seeing your authentic reaction to Quincy's BS behavior in college. You wouldn't believe how many guys act like that as soon as their girl's life is going better than his so they cheat to "humble" the woman lol
hmmm...interesting and sad
The Wood has always been a go to black classic for me 👌🏽
Classic Black romances for me would be Love Jones, Beyond the Lights, Brown Sugar, and Love & Basketball.
I'm so glad you're watching this! I've been wanting to see more UA-camrs react to Black movies in February. I also didn't watch a lot of these classics coming up lol but this was one of my faves. I never idolized this relationship tho lol. Anyways, The Best Man and Brown Sugar are two of my favorites, and I HIGHLY suggest them! I think Brown Sugar is GOATed and entirely too underrated!
Yea great idea
@@amariebloom So many of them react to romance movies as a February theme, which is cool, but there's a whole other theme for the month that a lot of them rarely consider 🤦🏾♀️. Then you can even combine them and do Black romance movies! There are many options lol.
This is one of the black cinema movies I grew up on and me and my cousins would watch.. you should check out The Wood, Juice, Low Down Dirty Shame, Set It Off, What’s Love Gotta do with it, Jason’s Lyric, Baby Boy, Players Club lmao 🤣 just to name a few crazy classics
Yes to all of these!!
Lol all of those and just to throw another maybe not at the same level as some but i got the hook up.
what's love got to do with it is an international Oscar nominated movie....not 'just a black movie ' ....
@@BTheTrue yes but that doesn’t mean it’s not still a black cinema film which a film that mostly black families have seen and know by heart
What about (1995) Higher Learning Movie????
Sanaa Lathen was always fire. But this movie introduced me to my (imaginary) wife Regina Hall.
“Set It Off” would be such a good watch for you, man! Would love to see you react to it.
"This dude don't give a damn about her dresses, man." Hilarious!
I think I was a sophomore in high school when this came out. It was a "keep it real" amongst teams nationwide for competition on the court. Also, "White Men Can't Jump" is the ultimate story of what actually happened in the 80's/90's. Same as this one.
Mello thank you for saying what I have felt for years. I am glad we have black cinema but it always seems to fall into certain categories: drug dealer, Abusive husband or boyfriend, the fool, and so many other things that made me not watch certain movies. After a while, you don’t want to see your reality but want to escape when you come to the movies.
The Five Heartbeats is my fav black classic. And no sir, Love & Basketball is a romance movie. It doesn't count against you. What every black person should have already seen is Friday. 😂😂😂 When we all saw it young, we thought that's what love is supposed to look like. Now that we know better, we do better! Great reaction!
Great pick! I highly recommend Love Jones, another great black romance classic.
It's a good movie, too.
Why do fools fall in love also
The soundtrack is absolutely a character in this movie, and u was cutting up every track 😂😂😂. But if you haven’t seen…
The Wood
White Men Can’t Jump
Clockers
Crooklyn
My favorite Black Cinema classics are The Wood and New Jack City. If you haven't seen them you should react to them. They're amazing!!!!
I’ve lived in Spain. It’s absolutely beautiful. Unfortunately the people didn’t really care for Americans and were quite rude. On the other hand, I’ve also lived in South Korea and those people would give you the shirts off their backs.
GIRL!!!!! Who are you telling! Lol
Long ago, I lived in Ibiza for a few months. It was absolutely gorgeous there, but unfortunately, the men of the island thought I was a hooker when I was actually a DJ with a summer residency. Still wouldn’t change my experience for anything, though.
Most movies follow the same plot lines so I can understand your reasoning in not being interested in the “black classics” when you were younger, but they’re classics for a reason and I think you should dive into them, I think you’d enjoy them. One on my favorites from this era is The Wood
The Wood is phenomenal!! Definitely a classic❤️
Yes The Wood is such a good movie
Definitely react to The Wood, Brown Sugar and The Best Man to complete the Sanaa Lathan/Omar Epps/Taye Diggs collection
This and Brown Sugar (Also Sanaa Lathan) were my go to sleepover movies growing up.
I saw Waiting to Exhale shortly after I saw this for the first time and that movie was absolutely fantastic. Highly recommend. Whitney Houston & Co. slayed it.
When I tell you.. I almost passed out at the ‘Family Dollar Version of Lil Kim’?! 🥴⚰️🥴⚰️🥴😭😭😭🤌🏾🤌🏾 Deceased!
Everytime Mello start dancing to the music LOL that was me every time!!! 🤣🤣
"Black classic"
1. Coming to America
2. Bad Boys 2
3. Vampire in Brooklyn
A STAPLE of my childhood! I was obsessed with this movie when I was a kid. I can see the problems with it now but overall I still love it. And just to clarify, since the WNBA didn't start until 1996/1997, I'm assuming they would have gone after players who had recently played in college or overseas, which would be how she ended up on the Sparks at the end.
My favorite movie of all time is Cooley high 💯 an all black classic 👌
I’m really glad you did this movie b/c I haven’t actually seen anyone else do a review of this.
Bruh 12:20 has me crying! LOLLLL You're funny as hell man. My favorite black movies that you probably haven't seen but should are House Party, Juice, New Jack City(a lot of legends in this movie), and the movie "Dope" it was a Netflix movie and was really good.
This was unexpected! I really like this movie!
lmao I loved this reaction so freaking much also never noticed how fire this soundtrack was until now. Black cinema suggestions ( I also hate black struggle movies too lol) - Set it Off , Bad Boys trilogy , Two can Play that Game Undercover Brother Bringing Down the House Poetic Justice
how could I forget Stomp the Yard and Drumline lol
This nigga hitting high notes lmao
Love your reactions!! Please do more black classic you haven’t seen. I understand not wanting to necessarily watch the “hood” movies because of the stereotypes but there are so many that are just good stories that you would love. If you haven’t seen Dead Presidents you should give that a try next. It’s definitely not a stereotypical “black movie” but it’s a great story and has a lot of excitement I think you’ll love. Keep reacting your channel is amazing ❤️
You should do a Omar Epps movie catalog reaction. The Wood, Higher Learning, and Juice are my fav Omar movies.
I was always side-eyeing Quincy in this movie cuz I felt he was terrible to her but I agree with you about the heart of this movie... it's still top choice.
My faves are Love Jones (another toxic romance)... the Wiz... Color Purple... Poetic Justice... and Purple Rain (or is that in a separate category) 😁
He did react to The Color Purple. His reaction...whew. Awesome!
How was poetic justice? It's one of those movies I always wanted to see but havent. I mean having ur leads be tupac & janet alone is amazing. I also thought janet was the most beautiful woman alive around 93 ish. In her video " that's the way love goes " shes just perfect the face the body everything. Shes still a beauty & always was but she was phenomenal at that time. I mean she went from mj's sister to micheals her brother. Tupac what can u say , the world lost a genius at only 24.
@@angelcris10 I think that was the first reaction I saw Mell do...I was hooked after that 😄
@@natalieps2387 It's got everything good you want in a movie... comedy... drama... Regina King... traveling... music... drunken moments... Tone Loc... excellent one liners that end up in songs...a Cameo by Maya Angelou and her poetry...Tyra Farrell wearing that red dress... even a Billy "mmm mmm mmmmm" Zane opener.
It's one of my favorite movies of all time...I think you should watch it immediately... it still gives me the feels.
My favorite classic Black movie is The Color Purple. I found your channel when I saw your reaction to it. Your reaction video to my favorite movie was truly beautiful to see.
I laughed toooooo hard at “what’s up, Hobbles?!” 🤣🤣🤣
Didn't know I would enjoy you enjoying the soundtrack SO much!
My favorite classic black movie is The Color Purple. You should check out the Best Man 1 & 2, Think Like a Man, and About Last Night
When you paused Regina on the screen 😂
@25:31
One of the reasons why I subscribed to Mel. He gets it, and he says it. Best commentary on any reaction video.
Goddamn this was such a pleasant surprise to have pop up on my notifs, I remember watching this movie on my iPod classic in like 2009 when I had to take a long ass bus ride to and from high school each day, I think I watched it at least once a week (and downloaded the soundtrack ofc)
Kyla Pratt is such a doll!
5:54, lol This is why I tune in to your reactions. Always makes me laugh..lol
I don't think of this as a "black classic" because its pretty universal. But this is my favorite movie ever!!
OMG … They’re Not Lying Up In These Comments … YOUR VOICE IS ON POINT … Your Reactions Are Hilarious, but YOUR DANCE MOVES AWESOME !!!!!!!! 😂❤️🕺🏾🎵
Nobody ever talks about how at the end… her mom still didn’t come to her games 🤧 lol
When he said that she waited two weeks before his wedding to tell him how she felt I was like for real dude she always had these feelings she just expressing them with her words y’all grew up together that’s like me & my childhood friend Robert Alphonse I haven’t seen or heard from him in almost 10 years & we grew up together up until he moved to Louisiana to live with his father now that we’re older I still think about my homeboy from childhood but you know things happen
Black classics are def the same but the characters are always diff which show our range
Mel calling the guys in Spain ugly 😂😂😂😂😂 this has made me laugh so much
"She got that I don't give a damn look!"
Tomboy gals, rise up! Hahaha
Watch Movie Budz! Sam is Sooooo critical of how basketball is in movies. You need to watch them!
My favorite black classic is Eve's Bayou
Man you should do a video on “save the last dance” you won’t regret it i promise
Yesssss my other fav movie
I guess Q thought he had all of the "Juice" or he thought he'd move to the West Coast to pursue his first "Love....Basketball", Juice 2: The Sequel!! 😁🤣
@Mellverse Baby Boy and Set It Off should definitely be next. You'll love them!
When I say this is one of THEE funniest reviews I've ever watched.... I mean it. You had me crying from start to finish lmaooooo.
Mello's intro is the vibe I need to have going into court.
Probably out having an affair 😂😂😭😭 I’m weak
Thank you for the most hilarious and real reaction video I have seen! (And to a favorite film!)
Smiles for miles; you’ve got a new subscriber!
Alfre Woodard also plays Sanaa Lathan's mom in the movie Something Different. Their dynamic in that is sorta similar to this movie.
Q name is the same name he had in juice
I stumbled upon this movie when it came on tv one night, loved it, and now have seen it a million times ❤️
Love and Basketball is a masterpiece.
You should watch New Jack City.
Yea!!!
Couldn't STAND this movie as a kid because everyone was always acting like I needed to love it just because I'm black and it's a "hood classic". Meanwhile my young ass was just confused as hell. And honestly I still hate it lol, call me crazy or whatever but I think it's just a terrible message to be sending to black women especially that THIS is the kind of relationship they need to fight for. Fuck that, y'all deserve better than this bullshit. I enjoyed the reaction but I'm never gonna sit through this film again on my own. I was just waiting for the main guy to die or something at the end but alas....
Can I just appreciate the fact that you have some basketball knowledge. I've been waiting to see a reaction of this movie with someone who actually understands what's going on on the court.
The black classics I usually like are all sports movies, if they even fall into that category. Coach Carter, Remember The Titans.
My fav Black classic is Brown Sugar, it's love letter to hip hop starring Taye Diggs, Sanaa and Mos Def
Yoooo!!! I’ve seen this movie at least 50-100 times. I had no idea there was an after credit scene!!!
holiday hart was such a good black classic and deserves at least a one time watch, it is very sad
I still luv this movie & Sanaa Lathan is such an amazing actress, you should check her out in Brown Sugar & Something New,another 2 of my favorites with her!
I forgot how 🔥 this soundtrack was
To my surprise, you're not the first or second reactor that has reacted to this movie. Now my favorite black classic: Malcolm X (1992). Anyway, great reaction Mello! 👍
That, Glory, Man on fire and training day are must see. Remember the Titans is mostly Disney bullshit as far as "based" on true events buy he's fantastic in that too.
Menace II Society is a great film to react.
Yup. It's one of my favorite movies!
Is that the one with Mikaih Pfiefer?
@@OneArmedRetroGamer that’s paid in full
I love your take on this one.
Coach Carter. AMAZING
I love how both Mello and Primm both spent a nice chunk of the video getting on Monica's hair when they reviewed this movie. Great reaction, I'd HIGHLY suggestion The Wood for a reaction, it's a great movie. If you want something fun and silly, with a bit of heart and good cast(Whoopi Goldberg, LL Cool J, Vivica Fox, Anthony Anderson, Jada Pinkett, Loretta Devine) I'd suggest Kingdom Come. It's not a rom com or romance movie like most black movies from the late 90s early 2000s, it's just a comedy.
Debbie Morgan is a Icon, look her up. Youngn!
I’m starting to think he seen this movie he predicting everythin that’s happening
I've watched this movie for 20+ years and never knew they had an after credits scene until this month
He is hilarious. This is a great reaction. I was dancing along too.
If you haven't watched Baby Boy then definitely give it a watch. Its crazy no other UA-camrs have reacted to it
This is why this is on everyone's play list
@Mellverse, "K! now that you've seen this, you have too see 'The Best Man'(1999), if you think that Regina Hall was something in this movie, you have too see her in this one, you will lose your damn mind over the character she portrays. Again love your reactions, until next time🙋🏿♀️🙋🏿♀️🙋🏿♀️🙋🏿♀️🙋🏿♀️!!!"
My favorite black cinema has to be DEAD PRESIDENTS. Such an underated film.
The music in this movie is 🔥 I was jammin too 😂🙌🏽
Love & Basketball was one of my favorite movies as a Black girl that was also a tomboy and loved basketball.
The part where you said you thought you were intruding had me hollering. 😂 You're a fool.
I ain't even gon lie, I see you with the Durag Bron look 🙏🏿
Favorite basketball movie
Mahogany and Claudine are my favorite Black love classic films ❤️🖤❤️🖤
🤣🤣🤣🤣he singing
Awwww I’ve seen this movie a trillion times but I’ve never seen that end credit scene 🥰🥰🥰
I like how you was talking like you was there
Yesssss finally thanks for this I needed it in a bad mindset
