    Superman Legacy was one of the most anticipated films of 2025. Well, now just Superman is one of the most anticipated films of 2025. James Gunn, Director and head of the new DCU announced on Threads that Superman would indeed just be a standalone title. We discuss a lot about The Man of Steel. We talk about what the budget should be. We talk about what the plans will be going forward and we talk about the Kingdom Come storyline. We also discussed the new Crow reboot and if we thought the new images do the character justice and is Rupert Sanders the right guy to direct this one? We dive deep into the MCU and talk about the report that the new TV shows will focus mostly on the street level shows like Daredevil. The other report was that the Multiverse will continue past Secret Wars. Is this a good play or should Marvel abandon the storyline altogether? This and much more on big thing Capes & Cowls with Kristian Harloff, Coy Jandreau, and Winston A. Marshall.

    I like the name change. Remember, the Donner version was called Superman: The Movie. At least they aren't doing the new and overused thing by putting "The" in front of Superman. They tried to call him that in Man of Steel, and I hated it. They do it enough with Batman.

      Man of Steel would have worked and nobody would have complained if the movie was great and a big hit! I loved the.title Man of Steel it reminded me of Nolan titleing his version of Batman sequels The Dark Knight. To me the teaser trailer, no matter how you feel about the finished product seemed like it was going to be something new and more original. Almost indie film inspired. Batman Begins trailers and even the actual film kind of had that feel!

It is the same reason why I could never watch or get behind any of these Transformer movies. Maybe I'm just too old now 😆 but it just seemed too fast and too much like a cartoon for me to invest my emotions into it. The 78 film with Gene Hackman as Lex Lurher and Marlon Brando as Superman's real father? Twas epic.

I am encouraged by the great cast and Gunn himself, so let’s see.🤞

    The biggest issue with The Terminator franchise is the quality of the movies.
    You can make a shitty $5 movie or a shitty $20,000,000 movie. The quality is what matters, not a budget.

    Budgets fine for Superman. It’s more important that it be great than make a ton. Unless you know the story the cast doesn’t automatically mean it’s soooo huge. Remember these characters are already in this world.

  • @loooooooooby
    @loooooooooby 6 місяців тому +3

    I think the budget needs to be capped around $200 mil.
    Guardians movie budgets were huge because you had a ton of stars, loads of CGI with space and ships, Rocket, Groot, etc. Hair, makeup, and costumes couldn't have been cheap. And then licensing for all of those songs had to have been expensive.
    Superman doesn't need nearly that much, at least not right out the gate. We need a few good fight scenes, and that should be the bulk of the budget. Go ham with those. Not quite Man of Steel 40 minute apolcalyptic levels of ham, but still something that rocks your core. Otherwise, the rest of the movie just needs to be silly scenes with Jimmy, cute scenes with Lois, intense scenes with Luthor... smaller, intimate, dialogue-heavy scenes to get us invested in the characters. Those should cost pennies, by Hollywood standards.

  • @xXCROSSFEEDXx
    @xXCROSSFEEDXx 6 місяців тому +3

    I think I'm with Coy in that I think that budget should reflect what they want to go for and that should apply to any movie going forward within the DCU. So just like I do think a movie like Superman that has to set up an entire tone and feel for the universe, should be about 185 to 200 million dollars, whereas a movie like swamp thing that is traditionally a more intimate story and character should be about 70 to $85 million. In my opinion, being more concerned about budget than what the story and goal calls for is just as dangerous as not being concerned about how high a budget can get. And I understand that the concern is there because of so many movies having high budgets and making almost nothing in the box office, but in this situation I think DC needs to be more concerned about making good content versus making money because being more concerned about making money is what ultimately killed the DCEU. So even if Superman only makes say 500 million on a $200 million budget, I still wouldn't panic because if the movie is fantastic, then it would elevate audiences confidence in DC again and will make it easier for the next movie to be able to actually make a profit and a sizable one at that

    I think that since this is the first movie that the DCU is going to be built upon, Gunn & Safran are going to want to walk a fine line with the budget. They want to be able to make the movie that they believe will be great, as well as profitable, while also keeping it in line and not go overboard. This will be a standard setting movie in many ways for this regime. That way, down the line if another director says they need a certain amount for a movie, they can use this movie's budget as a reference point and respond "Do you really need that much?" Gunn's 2 previous DC projects had budgets of $185 million (The Suicide Squad & Peacemaker). I can see them shooting for a budget around $200 million for Superman.

    Changing the title from Superman: Legacy to just Superman makes more sense since it's the first one in this new universe. The previous title is more meant for when we're a few sequels down the road. As for The Crow, I never saw the original, so I don't really give a shit about the character's appearance, but I second Winston's view in that it would've been a better move to do a sequel with a new character instead of remaking the old movie. I've always wanted to see it, so I'll have to do that before this one comes out. However, it's being released on the same weekend as Bad Boys 4, so that could be a problem. As for the MCU continuing the multiverse storyline, I'm all for it. Like Winston said, it simply needs to be reeled in. Other than Loki, we still haven't seen much of what they can really do with it when done neatly. I'm also good with Marvel focusing on the street level shows. And I have to push back a bit on Winston and Coy about Gen Z struggling with friendships and wanting less sex in entertainment. It was only one study from UCLA that came to these conclusions and they only surveyed their own students. I don't think every student even took it either, so I'm not buying it. The media got a hold of this and ran with it. They do just fine with friendships as anyone else.

    More show, less business plz…. Couldn’t tell you the budget of any of my favourite movies, it’s irrelevant to the consumer.
    Back in Jedi council days when there was all that excitement around TFA, I don’t recall one conversation about the budget - everyone was just hyped about the story possibilities and the characters - that’s what fans care about, let the execs worry about their spend.
    Talk about what you want the story in Superman to be! Not how much of someone else’s money they’re gonna spend making it.

  • @DarthVadersBurntAsshole
    @DarthVadersBurntAsshole 6 місяців тому +1

    The point of the budget comment isn’t that budget doesn’t matter, it’s that it only does if the film ISN’T successful.
    There was NEVER a question of budget when it came to Nolan’s Oppenheimer, or Cameron’s well…anything.
    There is never a question of budget with a studio like A24. It’s always big IP’s. This is Superman. While I understand that having a smaller budget can help a film be more monetarily successful, or the director be more creative, that’s not always the case.
    If Superman is successful critically, and ISNT a smash hit/billion dollar movie, the DCU will absolutely continue.

  • @thedefinitionisthis

    The symbol, title change, selfies... I love it all, and can't wait to see the final product. When it comes to the budget, I totally get both sides. Coming off the litany of box-office bombs in relation to their budgets, I would've thought that DC/WB would be a bit more cautious with how they spend money. But on the other side, you're hoping to jump-start with THE quintessential superhero that is Superman; a character who honestly hasn't had a movie that has been embraced by ALL audiences since the 70s and 80s. I definitely understand the need or mentality to swing for the fences, and throw a good chunk of change at it. Like Kristian said, if it was any other director at the helm, I'd be a bit more worried. But because we've seen what James Gunn can do for both Marvel AND DC, and within these realms tell human stories along with the absurd, and the fact he has legit put out there the importance of nailing down a story and script, I do have a bit more trust that the budget will be justified. We'll just have to wait and see. But going off what I've seen and heard thus far, I'm ready for a clean-slate for Superman and the rest of the DCU.

Here, though, I like some of the angular curves that make it look like an S (insinuated by the yellow outlining). Glad they're still keeping the eclipse yellow, yeah red with black looks cool but red with yellow IS Superman....

Also, I think the name Superman has more weight to it than Superman: Legacy. Just keep it simple with the titles.

    James Gunn Superman no longer having Legacy in the title is a little disapointing, because i like the sound of it. As long as the budget is not over 300 million there is no need for concern. To be honest i forgot The Crow reboot was happening until the photos leaked lol. It looks fine with make up but the plot synopsis has me a little worried. I wish they just made another entry in The Crow franchise instead of doing a reboot of Eric Draven story. There has been so many tragedies in recent years that could have been used as a good story for a new Crow movie.

    The beloved, Superman the movie cost $55 million in 1978, $260 million in today’s money. Iron Man budget was $160 million, worth $200 million today. For Superman, the greatest Superhero of them all, you want it to be the best superhero movie so I think $200 million is reasonable and should be able to break even at least.

    Little known fact Superman was created in my hometown Cleveland Ohio, I don't think that the multiverse should continue because I think that the next phase of the MCU should be the Mutant Saga or it could be the cosmic saga because we are going to have X-men and the Fantastic 4 after Secret Wars and both teams have cosmic storylines and I think it 'll be cool to see the cosmic side of the MCU or the next phase could be turned into something dark, we'll have to see what Kevin Feige is going to come up with naming the next saga after this multiverse saga.

    Hollywood needs to control its budgets if they hope not to lose money at the box office , you can see that they are trying but they still have a way to go. However, in any case there are always exceptions, in this case safe bets like Avatar, big movies like Avengers and necessary bets like Superman should be allowed to cost more than normal. At the end of the day Hollywood is a place to offer large events, it is almost impossible for them to become like Japan or India.
    Something I want to highlight is that a lower budget depends a lot on the type of story and the ability of the producers and directors, and as much as I love Gunn, he is not Villeneuve or Nolan, and he doesn't have gareth's vfx knowledge.
