For me though Polka-Dot Man stole the show, great performance, fun practical effects and man I can't remember the last time I cared that much about a character death in a comic book film.
I think Polka dot man's story is made all the more powerful by the fact that it's sorta metatextual. Until this movie he was only ever treated as a joke past his debut, anyone who knew him knew him as a joke and he'd get brutalised or killed whenever he'd show up with very few exceptions and the readers were never supposed to care. In a way, far more than any other character who's been given arcs like this in different stories, Polka dot man was a character who didn't have a reason to live as the text he was in never cared for him, him finally being able to see himself as having worth before he dies is so powerful because neither the writers or most readers saw him as having a purpose and despite that he found one himself. As a long term fan of Captain Marvel... I LOVED Shazam! The fact it was basically using the most recent version as a script blew me away. Also.. while writing this comment... could you picture James Gunn doing "I Can't Believe It's Not the Justice League"????
I really think ZSJL could have been 3 hours without meaningfully cutting it. You remove the completely pointless 30-minute Knightmare epilogue, and shorten the million times Wonder Woman does something in slomo while it goes “ahhhhhAaahAHHHahhhh”
Bingo, done. I’ve been very critical of ZS ever since BvS and retroactively man of steel I felt BvS dropped the potential ball I thought could’ve redeemed MoS. Despite my problems with his take on DC, I genuinely enjoyed his JL. But the slowmo, the chanting during the slow mo, the future segment. It’s like he was so close. There was no reason it had to be 4 hours. The part where the villagers sing as Aquaman walks into the ocean, I was super scared the movie was going to be the worst. I think he just needed someone to mitigate some of the pretentiousness.
And also cut Martian Manhunter pretending to be Martha Kent, why can’t it just be Martha that talks to Lois? You can keep the ending with him and Bruce but just remove the reveal that he was pretending to be Martha
I'm glad to hear someone celebrating Harley Quinn. I loved that movie but never knew any of all the BTS production, no wonder. Those "second phase" post JL films, Shazam, Harley, and Aquaman, along with Wonder Woman, really felt like they were achieving the WB/DC pitch of director driven movies to make movies that were creatively unique and different yet I could see all functioning in the same world. Very comic book. To me it was looking like a promising future.
It’s pretty refreshing to hear Birds of Prey praise. I remember shying away because people were trashing this movie, and then i finally watched it last year and thought “Did you guys watch a different movie than me?” It’s really fun
Man am I happy with this video. Your whole section on Birds of Prey is just what I wanted to hear 6:08 in particular. It's probably my favourite DCEU film, and I honestly think it's much better than the Barbie movie, especially when it comes to it's exploration of the experiences of women in society. You understand the motivations & backstory of the characters so well it makes for a hugely satisfying watch. 16:45 Woah didn't know you loved Taskmaster, this Taskmaster obsessed Brit is very happy to hear it. It's always fun seeing UK comedians/comedic actors in mainstream films. WW84 is a guilty pleasure of mine, I know it's bad but I sort of love it. And props for highlighting the cool action scenes in it, they certainly have a Raimi Spider-man feel.
I managed to see Birds of Prey in theaters six times before the world shut down. I absolutely love Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn. And I absolutely agree with you; The Suicide Squad and Birds of Prey are my favorite DC movies.
You liked "Canadian Tuxedo", but I loved "gender-bent Alfred E. Neuman". That whole classroom scene is hilarious, especially "intolerable d-bag" given recent events.
Peacemaker was the surprise for me, especially because I didn’t care for him in Suicide Squad. Top DCEU choice in my book. Not sure about that Birds of Prey choice though 🤔…
Birds of Prey is veeery cinematic and feels slow burn at parts I can see why BOP isn’t renowned as it should be. Still wish the kid wasn’t Cassandra Caine though 😅
How did they not animate a more believable shockwave for a stone structure hitting the ground next to people? That impact would took folks off their feet
I like Gunn, but I think he's better at lesser known heroes that he can put his own spin on. Ambush bug as DC's Deadpool or Legion of Superheroes as there Guardians would be my call. Peacemaker is actually my favourite DC project.
I think the Legion of Superhero's are too different from the Guardians. They're not silly rogue goofballs, their teens with the weight of the galaxy on their shoulders, but I see what you mean. For me, Sun Boy, Polar Boy, Ultra Boy, Andromeda and Mon-El have the most potential.
@@ProjektTaku what I meaning is they a group with almost zero public profile, large cast. He could do whatever he wanted with it. He favours stuff like this. Heck he could go completely goofball with the legion of substitute heroes or mainstream with Superboy or Super Girl. I think it would totally suit him.
@@Whalewraith True, but I don't think he should fully reinvent them. The Legion aren't super high profile due to terrible reboots, but they have tons of stories to pull from and characters that don't need to be changed all that much like GOTG or SS to be interesting. Also, no overly sunny, silly fools trope like so many writers fall into.
@@ProjektTaku They have so many members & styles he can just pick what he needs. You have a scale from the Dark reboot of Grim & Gritty which led directly into the 'fun' young legion being found in pods. Can't remember who ended up being clones.
So beyond excited to watch this video
It’s pretty refreshing to hear Birds of Prey praise. I remember shying away because people were trashing this movie, and then i finally watched it last year and thought “Did you guys watch a different movie than me?” It’s really fun
Finally, man. I waited so long for this video...
I know what you're gonna say
Dave bautista is the best wrestler turned actor
This is absolutely amazing keep up the great work can’t wait to see more 🔥!
17:25 TFP Megatron & Starscream MENTION 😳✨️ WE LOVE TO SEE IT
I love bird of prey so much! Thank you Nando
Peacemaker and The Suicide Squad are my favorite DCAU things!
The first Shazam Movie was great!
Happy to see birds of prey love, it was a very run/memorable watch for me.
I'm all on board the Gunniverse
Bruh. For real. Thank you for putting into words what I couldn't
I love when Harley says "I couldn't go back in and you can still do it" and Deadshot responds "That's condescending"
The Suicide Squad is one of my fave CBMs period :D
"Gee, this video seems familiar but I haven't upvoted it" "Oh yeah, I must have watched it on Nebula!" 😄
Until his fans felt like they wanted more they were owed the restored universe when that wasn’t the case
appreciate the Birds of Prey love
Calling the Snyder cult just "enthusiastic" is like calling Ted Bundy just "charming"
You're not wrong, but you left out a lot of context there...
Have you watched his Justice League, is it the best thing since the Dark Knight and the first Avengers?
Henry Cavill was made to be Superman.
I just realized that in the WW84 segment, Nando was playing Jortstorm by Slimecicle in the background.
I managed to see Birds of Prey in theaters six times before the world shut down. I absolutely love Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn.
And I absolutely agree with you; The Suicide Squad and Birds of Prey are my favorite DC movies.
Its hard being a DC fan....
Big fan of all your work!
Personaly i am more a marvel guy, but i always enjoy a nice positive video. There is to much hate on UA-cam
I watch the DCEU movies all the time, way more than the MCU
Had to comment 3 times
Dude! Birds of Pray is AMAZING!!!!!!
thank you for the birds of prey praise. THANK YOU.
Fantastic video
You liked "Canadian Tuxedo", but I loved "gender-bent Alfred E. Neuman". That whole classroom scene is hilarious, especially "intolerable d-bag" given recent events.
There was so many bangers in this era
James Gunn is the pumpkin spice of directors
I really like Shazam. It was one of the best DCU movies.
@@Resident_Aj to think they could've used Stephanie Brown or Harper Row instead of Cass
I would love a video of exclusively Nando’s Favorite Jackets. I subscribe to Nebula and would watch it there 😂
I do regret not seeing Shazam in theaters, the only superhero movie I feel that way about, I feel the opposite about 2 or 3 lol
How did they not animate a more believable shockwave for a stone structure hitting the ground next to people? That impact would took folks off their feet
3:03 in that part I think they took that scene from Kung Fi Panda 2.
I like Gunn, but I think he's better at lesser known heroes that he can put his own spin on. Ambush bug as DC's Deadpool or Legion of Superheroes as there Guardians would be my call.
Peacemaker is actually my favourite DC project.
James Gunn Legion would be amazing - such an underrated team
Classic Legion in The Darkness saga or even goofball with the Legion of Substitute heroes. I've got myself all excited now and I'm going to be pulling some back issues over the holiday.
Birds of Prey praise is always welcome
You forgot blue beatle and Shazam 2
That’s a different era entirely if you ask me.
that's part of the next video, already up on nebula
Shazam was shot in Toronto and area, NOT Vancouver.
