Mike what happened? What's the big thing your working on? I hope you come out with one more video for some closure. Us freestyle skaters gotta stick together. ✌️
Hope Mike is doing good these days came back to check and see if he’s posted anything and was a little sad to see this was his last post. Saw this vid when it first came out back when I was really into skating my sophomore year and his tips helped a lot. Mike whatever you doing man I hope you are happy and well. Much love bro
Damn, you forsure won't remember me but a few years ago you helped me when I was trying to skate. We sent pm's back and forth talking about how I could improve. I looked up your name and you are still at it! that's crazy. Crazy in the cool way though.
+Jacob S hey man! Yeah I'm still uploading when I can, been in a rough spot at the moment but I hope to put out more stuff. Hope all is good over there!
best formula to make your own wax get a big bag of tea light candles (little circle ones) get olive oil empty soft drink can cut top off can put in as many candles as you need for every 5 candles you use add one teaspoon of oil melt in a pan filled a tiny bit with water allow to solidify cut can open cheap good wax however big you want
Um this is totally wrong I have a skate wax company and our main ingredients are gulf wax and bees wax I used to use candles and you have to apply it every 5 grinds but all real wax uses gulf wax because it slides better and you don’t have to use your wax every 5 grinds and bees wax is just to make it last longer and makes your wax stronger rather then how candles just chip off as long as you use the 60 gulf and 40 bees it will work better than any wax but I do agree that most (non local) companies are ripping you off there stuff will be better than old candles just make your own or if your to lazy buy a local brand not big skate company’s
You can get a pretty slick slide with pure paraffin wax blocks from micheals , use a coupon from the website . Be sure to get the wax for jar candles, it’s softer and allows the wax to be applied better!
The hardness is what makes it good. Putting butter on a ledge doesn't mean it slides better. It has to have a happy medium of going on slick but doesn't come off when grinding.
+Reven - of course, but I feel like too many people here are falling for the same dumb gimmicks, ex: "it doesn't come off when you grind!". That is the placebo effect written all over it. If I waxed a rail with some dumb old wax and told you it was high quality, and then I let you skate on it for hours; you would most likely agree that it was high quality wax. When people say it is high quality makes you believe it's high quality, when in reality it isn't amazing at all, you're fooled into it thinking it matters. It's plain old wax, wax is wax.
+slowmomike skate wax has good wax and oils. I think getting charged for the brand and extras is dumb ,but they make the best stuff. It is easily replaced but only with good quality wax like gulf which will at the end cost as much as pro wax. One dollar candles aren't as good.
+Reven yeah I give skatewax +1 because it works out of the package and most of them are not acting like they are the end-all be-all of wax which is fine. Though tbh I'd say if you buy gulfwax you'll get a lot more bang for your buck than skatewax. As for one dollar candles, yeah I wouldn't be surprised if they only work for a short period of time, that's why I pick up those gigantic 5 dollar candle ones, those work perfect.
+Andrew Vermaelen Yeah blank decks usually have quality that rival bigger companies. The reasons why I would go for a company's board over a blank deck is: 1) I want to support the company. If you loved some skate part or want to support a smaller company to help them grow (like I'm doing with shell shock), you can buy a board from them in appreciation. 2) If I prefer a company's board distributor over a blank distributor. I am able to do all of my tricks with any skateboard. However, some skateboards give me more of an "edge" than others (an edge meaning that I have more comfort for tricks) 3) I like cool graphics. Blank decks are good but kinda boring. I'm going to see the bottom of my skateboard for hours so might as well have it look cool. For wax, I don't care how it looks, much like how I don't feel the need to buy tissues with like Tony Hawk's face on it. Other than that, yeah blank decks are pretty much company boards without the graphic, there's just more variety in the company sector than the blank.
Bro idk if I agree man. Get diamond wax and get candles. You need like 6 candles and a lighter to get the quality of diamond wax. No joke it sticks on like metal. I can't explain it but it adds like you just put liquid metal and it dried in. One swipe and it slides smooth. Regular candles for the most part fall out and is just made so you can light a fire. They add the cheapest wax mixed with other plastics I think. It's just way better and worth it I think.
+Reven - with some waxes you may need to melt with vegetable oil to get it to stick well, try that out and it will solve your problems. Shouldn't take more the 5 mins. And just because your wax looks pretty shouldn't fool you into thinking that it is "better quality". I feel like you are falling into that territory. That's how you get swamped by companies trying to take your money, even outside of skateboarding.
Mike, again telling it like it is. Anyway, like several comments have suggested you should try making your own wax, it using candles, oil and some butter. I made some and a little bit goes a long way. It's cost effective, and lasts a long time. Anyone, hope you upload again sometime soon, your videos always help.
i totally agree with you from a functional standpoint; yes a candle and a block of skate wax are technically the same thing with different branding. At the same time, i like to think of skate wax as a part of the culture overall. When i buy a hunk of wax from a skate shop, im spending more money, but that money is going to support my local shop, and a brand that (at least ideally) helps support skateboarding as a whole, not just going into the pocket of some giant chinese candle manufacturer
Thatsmy Dad Definitely agreed, like I said near the end of the video, you can buy skate wax if you want to support a company or a person. I guess my biggest complaint is when "hi-tech" wax get into people's heads. However, I personally am not a fan with skate wax being part of skate culture, but more of a _novelty_ item. Skating to its core is the definition of DIY. Instead of element flat bars, parks (I mean, all of that stuff is great to practice on) and skate wax that were designed for skating; skating should really be about gritty street, sketchy stuff and cheap wax that were not designed for skating. Hopefully that makes sense :P maybe I'm just a grandpa
***** lmao your reply made me giggle a little bit, because ive always enjoyed your videos but secretly wished you would actually do some of your tricks in the streets and not just your back patio or whatever. You're totally right about "hi-tech" wax being a dumb gimmick, but gimmicks like that have always and will always exist in skate culture (Copers? Z-Roller Trucks? Bridge Bolts? "Swiss" bearings?) If we stopped at least trying to re-invent and re-brand skateboarding wouldnt it just become stagnant? I mean from my perspective, as long as the profits are helping support people who are passionately trying to skate as a career, i wont be a hater. to each his own tho...
Thatsmy Dad hey man my back patio is pretty legit ;-) though yeah as you can see I kind of moved away from that because people actually started caring about what content I make (I still need it for trick tips though). If people didn't watch my stuff I'd still be filming tricks in my backyard to be honest haha What I mean by "street" are places that were not designed for skating, that's all it means in that context. I'd totally define my patio as street, just like how rodney mullen skated near barns, that's skateboarding. You can do it anywhere and that's why I love it! The reason why I don't skate "street" street is because I don't have the tools for it, it's pretty rough where I live in terms of how packed we are, how boring it is and the time I have. But that shouldn't define my skating, at least I hope not. But yeah that's all you need for some good ol' fashioned skating, a slab of concrete. I'm all for different styles and varieties of trucks/bearings/decks and whatnot, because we need those things as skaters (we don't need gimmicks though). Skate wax, not really. It's kind of like buying $10 cereal with tony hawk's face on it, yeah some of the money is going to skate company, but I don't feel compelled to buy it because I can get cereal for a cheaper price. It's kinda like that. I'll buy skateboard parts, but buying skate wax _just_ for the wax is silly
i agree with everything in this video but there are some candles that are made of of this weird stuff that instead of it rubbing off on the ledge it just crumbles into crumbs and just sucks and doesnt work at all
-yung rei- strange, I've never had this crumble problem before, I personally just use pillar candles and it gets it right for me. Do you recall what type of candles do that?
***** I have to agree, your video was very good and thorough. tho I have also had many candles where the wax will flake into tiny pieces that will get everywhere, and the little bit that does end up on the ledge is not slick what so ever unless its layered thick. I don't know if its the type of wax or some dye they use or what.
UrineTr0ub1e that's interesting, hmmm..... I'm curious to know what candles cause this. Could they be extremely old candles? Then again my candle is like 3 years old. Were they at all pillar candles by any chance? I've had no problems with those, mine just smears like regular skate wax
***** well i bought one brand new and it crumbled and i also found a box a candles in my house that did the same thing. those candles also felt kind of plasticy but its hard to describe but when you rub it in the ledge it has like a shell and once it rubs off its just crumbles into a million peices and makes a mess
Jesus Candle (without the picture on it) is AMAZING! It's cheap and contains oil in it, so ya know, weeeee! You have to keep it in a zip lock, and you have to break the glass off at first, but it's worth it.
There is a benefit to certain preparations of waxes made for ledges and rails. If this same candle wax rubbed off on the ledge/rail smoothly and just sits well it's gunna be better. I personally use a soy pumpkin candle that I couldn't sell at work because the wick fell out. Sometimes it leaves chunks and I have to rub way too damn much to cover enough. But it works, so I don't go buying wax. I totally agree with you though, but just saying that there are some reasons that some waxes work better. But in the end, this extra tech wasn't available years ago when pros were killin obstacles.
shinyscizor12 of course! lots of skaters do, waaay cheaper and gets the job done. Skate wax is either considered a novelty item or a scam in my opinion.
+Marcus Quantrill gah, yeah you're right. It got really ridiculous how many takes I needed so that the focusing didn't go incredibly crazy. It was driving me insane. Definitely moving that camera back in the future for sure, just hoping that the video won't suffer from it
Overall I agree, but there are definitely some differences between candle types that makes some better than others. Some candles crumble a lot when trying to wax a ledge and some wax is very dense/hard and takes more effort to put on. I've actually found that the easiest to apply wax and cheapest for the price is canning wax (it's just paraffin) that you can find at like any grocery store.
drivenbyfate yeah it seems like I'm just kind of lucky with the candles I get? I just searched up Canning Wax and saw that it is actually Gulf Wax which I have actually mentioned in the video, I guess that means +1 for gulf/canning wax then. Appreciate to hear your experiences, I ended up making a little annotation edit about it.
Haha awesome to have a new series. I like how you actually have scientific scientific facts to back up what you're saying. Stuff like wax that's supposedly the best is such a scam. I like the idea of skateboarding being DIY anyways. Lots of scams out there for sure.
NickSkate7 Totally! And yeah you don't understand how much I 100% agree with you with skating being DIY. It's like, skateboarding to the core is DIY haha. We don't buy skate junk, we make it ourselves or we find it when we drive. Artificial stuff sucks, using stuff that is not meant for skating is what skating is. Sorry I kinda rambled on a bit there, but your comment was excellently put
He didn’t talk about the texture!! Skate wax has a softer texture than normal candle wax and it also pact down more so your getting more than you think! All together skate wax is better than candles in my opinion but believe what you want!
Can I suggest a video on freestyle boards? Are they really "necessary" for tricks like sidewinders or san fran flips? To me freestyle makes much more sense when done on a street board. I find it fascinating because you're using the skateboard in a way it was "not intended", having a dedicated board kind of takes that away. How big a difference is there? I've seen people do good freestyle on 8" street boards. Btw if you find the right shop you can skip the candle melting and just get a block of paraffin at like 1.50-2€, about a s big as that one you're showing (don't really know how to call that shop in English, it sells solvents basically).
Hey so you know how blank decks usually cost less than a big skate company's deck? I understand that it's more expensive because you are paying for the branding but at the same time is there a difference in quality? I haven't really tested it out because I don't have the money to, but I was just wondering if you had any opinions on it?
+Live Fast Skate Faster I'm wondering why my wiener is 2 inches from the ground. There, I said it! Are you happy now? Thank you youtube comments for making me feel 15 again lmao
+slowmomike I need help with my kick flips, I could do them and started getting them consistent, and then out of nowhere I couldn't do them, haven't landed one since, please help.
Skate wax costs more not so much because of the brand but because of scale. The cheap candles are made in massive amounts, using leverage from economies of scale to bring the price down. Skate companies aren't anywhere near that scale, so their cost of production is higher. You're certainly paying for brand for some of them, but there are cheap brands that are still more expensive than just a a cheap candle, and that is due to production scale.
skate wax contains Butter Wax and Vegetable or Olive Oil so its Smoother and has better results than Normal Candle Or Parrafin Wax. They. Are both Good But Skate wax is better for its performance and others Good For the Price.
+Mendonça.P haha I know I know, I do feel bad about not uploading much, I really hope to change that soon! And hell yeah I love pm, falco all day cuz I was a big melee fan before pm, but wolf and lucario have my heart too but I have no idea what lucas does lol, he just does a lot of flips and throws things and wess dance sometimes
8 років тому
thats awesome, i main Squirtle and play some Falco aswell Do you play on Wii or Dolphin? if you play on Dolphin maybe someday we could go on netplay
+Mendonça.P I play using wii, but maaaaaan I want dolphin badly. The issue is that I'm a scrooge about frame lag, like I can't stand playing on hdtv's. I feel like I should upgrade my graphics card and all that junk so it would be more bearable
Robbob 133 I'll be super cliche and say Rodney Mullen inspires me, a lot of pro skating nowadays is just doing flip tricks down big gaps or whatever. It's fun to watch but after a while it gets redundant when it's done over and over again, everyone does it. I like some creativity, like "wow I never would've thought of doing that there!" instead of "insert generic flip or grind trick here". The saving grace though is that even if a video part is full of generic tricks, I'll still enjoy watching it because I enjoy watching things skated on that were not meant to be skated, doing that involves some type of creativity and freshness. And Mullen's THPS3 part got me into freestyle at first, but then I quickly realized I sucked at it so I didn't do much of it. A while later a youtube channel by the name of dtj16 got me into it a 2nd time because he was learning how to do it. There wasn't a huge skill gap so I tried to keep up with what he learned. He's a great dude.
***** I thought you would say Rodney. I agree with you, I have seen so many people do a kickflip over stairs and its not as amazing as it used to be, but Rodney Mullen is pushing 50 years old and still doing amazing combinations. Well I am going skate on my terribly rocky and non-flat streets.
Question for you mike: I see some skaters grinding bricks and I was wondering if they just wax the hell out of the bricks or if they just look like bricks and I don't know what im looking at because I tried before and I couldn't get it to work. Maybe park curbs or side walk curbs I don't know
Lamarr Marcel hmmm do you have a video of this? I can't exactly see a skater grind on brick, maybe slides like boardslides if the brick is high enough and waxed like crazy I'd assume. I've seen skaters boardslide actual skateboards so I guess anything is possible haha.
Lol, I useally melt some cheap candle wax, put some oil in it because it seem's slidier to me even though it probably doesn't do shit, then melt a bunch of crayons to make it cool colours, also let's me know it's my wax incase anyone tries to steal it ;P
+rL VisioNz lol I'm here, I'm here! I've been in a huuuuuuge process for something for this channel that will be skateboard/trick tip related, and it's taking me a lot longer than I have imagined haha. I'm hoping it will all be done december and released january! I also have multiple word documents of trick tips that I wanna do and I'm so winded from my projects that I haven't gotten to them :P so tl;dr I've been working in the background for a bit
+Paxton Learneds it depends on the material. Some materials such as some concretes are just unskateable even with wax, other concretes and other materials (like marble and masonite) work well. It's really all about having an extremely smooth surface to get it to work.
I enjoy mikes sense of humor I hope he's doing well these days.
Where he’d go
@@fios8312 he needs to come back and play rad rat and gifted hater in skate

channel is lots of nostalgia bro i was in middle school watching your old vids long ago
Hope you’re okay. Just wanted to let you know you’re videos really helped me out man. Thanks!

slowmomike come back bro
what happen to this channel ?
I was wondering the same thing. I used to watch his channel years ago but he hasn't uploaded any new videos in a while. I hope he is good.
@Aloysius Redillas lmao dont say that
best formula to make your own wax
get a big bag of tea light candles (little circle ones)
get olive oil
empty soft drink can
cut top off can
put in as many candles as you need
for every 5 candles you use add one teaspoon of oil
melt in a pan filled a tiny bit with water
allow to solidify
cut can open
cheap good wax however big you want
Euan Chester sounds like a cool idea! I'll +1 this for people who want to DIY their own skate wax and aren't as lazy as me haha
***** I have been using this same formula to make my own wax and I can confirm that it definitely works :D
its literally perfect wax, you should try it out mike. literally just household items and takes like 15 minutes max
Euan Chester sure man! I'll give it a shot after my regular candle runs out
Euan Chester its better than just candle wax, and cheaper than brand wax
Thought about this channel again recently, gonna go binge through all your old vids. Hope you're doing good in your journey. 👍❤

Glad I'm not the only one who uses regular candle wax
shinyscizor12 of course! lots of skaters do, waaay cheaper and gets the job done. Skate wax is either considered a novelty item or a scam in my opinion.
I do my candle is class never have problems
love you mike
comeback
+Marcus Quantrill gah, yeah you're right. It got really ridiculous how many takes I needed so that the focusing didn't go incredibly crazy. It was driving me insane. Definitely moving that camera back in the future for sure, just hoping that the video won't suffer from it
When the world needed him most... he disappeared...
COME BACKKKK
Where are you?
Come back plz
Appreciate to hear your experiences, I ended up making a little annotation edit about it.
yo where are you dude
Still waiting on episode 2
Can I suggest a video on freestyle boards? Are they really "necessary" for tricks like sidewinders or san fran flips? To me freestyle makes much more sense when done on a street board. I find it fascinating because you're using the skateboard in a way it was "not intended", having a dedicated board kind of takes that away. How big a difference is there? I've seen people do good freestyle on 8" street boards. Btw if you find the right shop you can skip the candle melting and just get a block of paraffin at like 1.50-2€, about a s big as that one you're showing (don't really know how to call that shop in English, it sells solvents basically).
just try them all out and whatever feels the most comfortable is what you should use, street board or not
Lol where I live nobody has a freestyle board.
were did this dude go?
wondering the same thing. He will comeback though.
come back man
Hey so you know how blank decks usually cost less than a big skate company's deck? I understand that it's more expensive because you are paying for the branding but at the same time is there a difference in quality? I haven't really tested it out because I don't have the money to, but I was just wondering if you had any opinions on it?
5:31 hahahah you looked down when you said "2 inches" WHAT ARE YOU TRYING TO SAY LOL
+Live Fast Skate Faster I'm wondering why my wiener is 2 inches from the ground. There, I said it! Are you happy now? Thank you youtube comments for making me feel 15 again lmao
+slowmomike I need help with my kick flips, I could do them and started getting them consistent, and then out of nowhere I couldn't do them, haven't landed one since, please help.
are you still alive
Good video. Very informative
And it all ended no more content
i noticed that the only thing that matter is that the wax is soft (for curbs)
Are you okay man?
Where did Mike go?
skate wax contains Butter Wax and Vegetable or Olive Oil so its Smoother and has better results than Normal Candle Or Parrafin Wax. They. Are both Good But Skate wax is better for its performance and others Good For the Price.
4 years later...
Slow mo mike
king of uploading consistently
+Mendonça.P THAT'S ME ALRIGHT!
I'm trying tho
life things and stuff happens
***** im just kdding dude
you said you play project M?
+Mendonça.P haha I know I know, I do feel bad about not uploading much, I really hope to change that soon!
And hell yeah I love pm, falco all day cuz I was a big melee fan before pm, but wolf and lucario have my heart too
but I have no idea what lucas does lol, he just does a lot of flips and throws things and wess dance sometimes
thats awesome, i main Squirtle and play some Falco aswell
Do you play on Wii or Dolphin?
if you play on Dolphin maybe someday we could go on netplay
+Mendonça.P I play using wii, but maaaaaan I want dolphin badly. The issue is that I'm a scrooge about frame lag, like I can't stand playing on hdtv's. I feel like I should upgrade my graphics card and all that junk so it would be more bearable
you need to make more videos :)
Hey slowmomike, what pro skater inspires you to skate and how did you come across freestyle.
P.S. Your Ollie trick tip helped me out
Robbob 133 I'll be super cliche and say Rodney Mullen inspires me, a lot of pro skating nowadays is just doing flip tricks down big gaps or whatever.
Well I am going skate on my terribly rocky and non-flat streets.
you still alive? I hope so.
I've seen skaters boardslide actual skateboards so I guess anything is possible haha.
it cant be said truer (if thats even a word)
Word! Come back dude!
and the other reason is so that the companies can make money which is normal
Hey will you be putting out more stuff?
guys i have found the best skate wax, its ikea candles they are so good and cheap i use the apple ones
Haha i bought a giant IKEA candle it's like 10x20cm i use it for skating and when i take it with me my friends laugh because it's GIGANTIC
i melted 50 apple scented candles together and it is the best
+Luke Moore sick man! I gotta look into that!
make sure you get the tealight candles, its $2 for 50
thought about ur old vids hope ur well
make more episodes please!
Please please continueee
Lol, I useally melt some cheap candle wax, put some oil in it because it seem's slidier to me even though it probably doesn't do shit, then melt a bunch of crayons to make it cool colours, also let's me know it's my wax incase anyone tries to steal it ;P
where ya been mike?!?
+rL VisioNz lol I'm here, I'm here! I've been in a huuuuuuge process for something for this channel that will be skateboard/trick tip related, and it's taking me a lot longer than I have imagined haha. I'm hoping it will all be done december and released january! I also have multiple word documents of trick tips that I wanna do and I'm so winded from my projects that I haven't gotten to them :P so tl;dr I've been working in the background for a bit
Mike I hope you’re okay
do you skate street concrete ledges or grind on things with no metal?
+Paxton Learneds it depends on the material. Some materials such as some concretes are just unskateable even with wax, other concretes and other materials (like marble and masonite) work well. It's really all about having an extremely smooth surface to get it to work.
where did u go bro!!!!
Make mroe vids!!
its 2020 pls upload
Now I can have scented skate wax
Deodorant also works I use axe
Noah Garcia Never tried that one before haha, sounds cool!
