- There's a big difference between a street 50/50 and a ramp 50/50. Here is how they should be done!
Adriano's Channel: / adrianofiorevideos - Фільми й анімація
The reality to doing 5050 is, if you want to be good at them, you need to learn how to lock in both ways and come in on transition either way it locks in. It’ll take some time to get consistent on how you lock in, but a good skater can come in from either positioning comfortably. It’s all person preference, but I’ve found for shorter grinds or corner grinds I like to be cross locked, but if I’m going for a long 5050 that may how some kinks to it, it’s much easy to stay locked in on top either heel or toe side.
TOE SIDE????? man, that sounds awful feeling. I hate those on transition
private skatepark confirmed. I'm so happy for you , Ben. Seems like you're really killing it at life. I wonder if your kids realize their middle-aged carpenter dad is so lit.
Your explained this perfectly. I've been struggling for months on how to get a proper lock in on these. Thank you Ben!
Loved the video I can't even go down a ramp and loved every minute of it thank you Ben for what you do for the skating community
It’s just so counter intuitive from a street POV. I just started learning mini ramp and it’s such a different world!
your friend is learning the same exact tricks i just started to try out this week for the first time ever!! i’m just now trying out my first ever frontside stalls, so this video was perfectly-timed to be uploaded!!! thanks ben!!
Assassins
Thanks for doing this video. I've been struggling with fs 50/50 and just the stall for a long time. Backside I'm good at both. I tried to convince a fried of mine who's doing backside full on the the ramp that it's a lot easier and nicer when you're locked in not full on the ramp. He wouldn't believe me. I'll send him this video, this might change his mind. Please do more of those videos, they are always helpful, I learned a lot from you 8)
I had not given this a thought. But now got one more thing to worry about.. thanks a lot Ben!!! Lol have a great one Ben always sending you the best!!
Adriano showing some great progression on the mini ramp!
i like this, you showed us all there is to know (pretty much lol ) about skate setups so only makes sense to move on to actual trick '''tips''
I definitely needed this. I've been trying to fs 50-50 around a corner ramp but always going the safe option way up on top but I couldn't figure out how to get more in the ramp without slipping from under my heels (death). Cheers
always wondered about this lock in. just what i needed! thanks ben
Thanks for the great tips, I'm trying to learn them at 50.
Crazy I was looking for this today, I found some old video earlier and than this popped up which is more relevant and by one of my favorite UA-camrs
Happy to see you back, bro!
Huge! Fan. Back in the day you’re brother was my favorite skater in the mosaic vid
Thanks, I never knew the origins for the "50-50" name!
That was helpful and I'm gonna try it out to see if it comes back for me. I don't think I've done one in 25 years.
Thanks for the upload 🤙
I think it is just personal preference. You are cross locking. Jeff Grosso did that, so it must be ok! Personally I think cross locking looks and feels strange on a frontside grind.
I am always on the heel side of my trucks for frontside and backside grinds. With frontside, my toe side wheels are on the deck when I ride mini ramp, but are raised when I ride bowl as the speed keeps my trucks on an angle, as with the true 50 50 description you mentioned.
Hahah love the bro vs dad comparisons keep them coming Ben
I was curious about that. I saw that nowadays its done that way and thought it was an influence from skating round bars. Now I know better. Thanks.
I would say transition skating is what originally influenced round rail skating but there is a generation or two that didn’t get much transition influence who probably learned to skate rails before transition. I’m kind of in the second group.
really instructive, thanks man ! 👍
Glad to see your videos Ben :)
Makes sense. Nice size ramp as well.
That mini ramp looks smooth!👍
Thanks for the video and nice mini ramp!
Dunks being skated is such a refreshing sight 😊
Gonna try these like this next time I skate, I feel like I was the other way round never really skated ledges until learning front side axle stall/5050 grinds on tranny which massively helped my ledge game
Interesting. My sequence was fs ledge 50-50s, bs transition 50-50s/carves, then rail fs 50-50s. I think learning on ledges was easier than starting with transition grinds and stalls.
I've been doing those kinds of frontside 5050s for 20 years, and I've always hated my frontside 5050s. Can't wait to try this
Cool vid! Btw nice FA shorts
def my favourite video you've made so far thank you. just knowing the origin of 50/50 is going to help me a lot, and the rest of the instruction is super helpful too. great ramp. did you build it? can I ride it? dimensions? I'm learning to skate at 50 and my goal is to come somewhere close to what you guys are doing there. but I don't understand why you're not sweating
What are the dimensions of that ramp? Looks perfect. I'm planning on getting a mini ramp in the future.
Not sure, wild guess is prolly around 3 feet high, 12 feet in width, and 18-20 feet long including the top deck and everything
I had exactly the same question as soon as I saw it. I am planning to try and build a miniramp from some scrap I have and this looks like the perfect size!
If those sheets are 4x8, it's 16' wide. I have a 8' wide 3' miniramp and it's too narrow to really get into a grind.
I also think looser trucks help get into grinds. Super ripping fun ramp. One of my favorite mini ramp grinds is a back 5-0 as a set up to build speed. Your bs 5-0 is super nice!
The finest skater there is ⚡
Another great video!
This is exactly what I'm trying to work on, I am so use to locking in with my toes it's like I'm starting from the beginning again haha
I have always used coping like a Ledge, there are some advantages as you can maneuver into other positions, I think tomorrow I will play about with the crosslock idea.
fa shorts AND dunks this man getting money
Tending
8" Cal7 natural wood grain board
Indy stage 11 139's
52mm green Spitfire Formula four classics
Shake Junt green/gold triple OG's abec-7 bearings
Gold 1" Pig hardware
vintage clear Pig 1/8" riser
I would be skating my 20 year old 7.6 Venture Awake Highs or Stage 8 Indy 129's... but I recently found them both and they are still too nice and nostalgic for me to wanna skate and keep scratching up. They arent ground down much at all and I kinda wanna preserve them for historys sake. Cleaned em up with a full dismantle/sos pad/new bushing (conicals ; ) just like the stage 8's came with). There was also some hardly worn 52mm Flip wheels - classic shape with clear urethane and black triangle cores on one of the 2 pairs of trucks I found. Nostalgia is real - I dont wanna skate em - just preserve the early 00's vibes.
My whole life I thought it was called a 5050 because both trucks are grinding. In my mind I always just assumed it was because it’s 50% front truck 50% back truck I guess. That’s why I figured a 5-0 was called that, because it was only one truck. You learn something new everyday haha.
Same!
I thought that too.
Id stick w what u & almost everyone thought. Not to sure about that other theory of orgin. 1st time lve heard that. Not too sure if lm falling for that one. Could be something he thought of. Would love to see actual proof of the real orgin of name. Im now very interested
It is called 5-0 because of the Police Car engines, i dont remember the full Story. "5-0!" Ment the cops are coming. (I did read this in a Magazine in 1990-2000 era).
Me too
Hmmmm, never really even though about how i grind till now... but i totally do it like a street skater. lol. Love me a good Krooked deck too!
Backside is definitely dad, I know this because it’s my go to. I want to be more bro but I’m just too dad 🤷
Backside definately more dad
This is skaters at their most wholesome
The skate world needs a Caruso - Degros video!
Hey Ben, your channel makes me want to be the best 35 year old skater I can be. Here's an odd request - order a complete - any deck you want - from tgm skateboards and do a review on their shop hardware: Core brand trucks, shop wheels and bearings. I want your opinion and you'd help out a lot of people who want to start seriously skating on a budget
Thank you
Ahh, I've been doing wrong haha. Awesome tips
very interesting
needed this
needed this video rn
Thanks, I think I've been doing fs 50s comfortably wrong for years, gonna try cross lock next time 😅
thanks man
God dammit, I love you Ben. Where was this tip 5 years ago?? 😂😂
Amazing tutorial, I wish I had the balls to skate ramp.
It's the least scary thing to skate. Now flatground, that's terrifying.
ALL AROUND PERFECT SKATING AND ADVICE! IM A SUBSCRIBER! LETS GET SOME MILLIONS OF SUBSCIBERS! WELL WISHISES BRO! 🙏🙌
Woo missed ur uplands
I think 50 50 came from using both trucks it then morphed i to 5-0 grind being the new name for stand up grind. Not ramp position .
I am 55 was Canada's pro for 86 expo world championships and was on Santa Cruz team so I was right there at the time even earlier ,skated since 8yrs old. Just sayin'........
I watch your vids they are proper!!
I ground Vanderhoof vert pool coping this year. F.Y.W.S.S. is my crew. Totonto
Cool man. Yes 50 50 is both trucks but 5-0 is just back truck. Its not the new name for a stand up 50 50. However alot of people just say 50 in short for 50 50. From what youve done l know u know this. Just correcting something u prob accidentally wrote. Summary: 50 50 (fifty fifty) is both trucks & 5-O (five o) is only the back truck. 👍
@@chris73brown pointless picky me meant to say back truck grinds that were not slash style were called stand up grinds for a long time before I ever heard it called a 5 0 grind. I just assumed the 5 worked its name into stand up after, as I heard 50 50 long before 5oh grinds. But that's me n my world ,there are lots of scenes. We called backside pivots Burlingtons for a long time all depends where you were I guess. Cheers
@@nigeldutru109 👍
I lock in like a vert skater using my glorious thunder trucks !
That is a perfect mini ramp
i think this has some practical application for how you have to attack curbs too
I used to like to wear a beanie pulled down low while skating mini ramp. Forceing my focus down on my feet, board, and ramp. Also to block out any other riders in my field of vision standing on the deck. Putting me in my personal zone mentally.
Cool
Very helpful info to me cause my front 50s on tranny have always sucked
I like the look of that style frontside but...I prefer both heel/wheel locked on backside grinds
perfect timing i just found a great halfpipe spot that nobody goes all concrete.
I’ve always thought about it like a smith grind where you barely tap the front truck on
Perfekt guide
god damn you are so good🙏
Definitely bro
That ramp looks perfect for old dude like us. What is the height and radius of transition?
That SB retail or resell price bruh? Looks 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 on u
I like the street skater version, fully locked on top lol.
Man there is not a publicly accessible half pipe or mini pipe anywhere near me. Used to live close to Hazard Co. In GA but they done went and closed. The free outdoor parks are overcrowded, and typically only have bowls, and street skating areas. I would Love to have a mini pipe in the backyard one day. Would put hours and hours into that bad boy.
Fine 😜
Ben do you find you have less truck slip on coping with Ventures than Indy's?. I had Ventures in the 90's and had 50 grinds down and would just have both trucks slightly on the heel side of the king pin for bs 50 grinds and would never get truck slip. Trying to relearn them with Indy's the same way and get truck slip everytime. The indys are even wore down pretty good. Maybe my coping back then was softer and that's why?.
I can do BS locked either way, but prefer back toe front heel. I can grind longer and have greater confidence coming back in. It’s also much more like a BS Smith/monty. I do also like back heel front toe - very floaty and more like a 5-0.
I think you should do a trick tip on pivot fakies. Such a rad casual trick that I’ve never been able to figure out
I need to get them again first.
That's a trick that after 22 years of heavy crossover skating I could never get!! Even rock to fake was a hairy trick to me ,always had to rock to pivot!!
that first backside 5-0 is extra buttery!
Ben with the FA shorts and dunks?
That ramp looks so fucking perfect jeez
I wish I could go back to 08. Save myself from a heavy hang up.
First I love you Ben
This video should have been filmed at the new mini at Firefighters Park in Maple Ridge :)
Do you know the dimensions of that mini ramp? It looks so perfect
Ben had a pro carpenter build it for him to make it perfect. Lol
I know a guy ;)
@@bendegros very unhelpful ben, drop the dimentions
He mentions it in some other videos. I believe 3.5' tall, 16' wide, 6' flat and 6' radius
Loved the video! The info is really helpful and also the vibe of just two friends skating makes it enjoyful to watch :)
hey guys, he's skating them dunks
This is the dimension ramp I wish I had
Stability on the board and holding close to the rail and staying into transitions to improving the talent of practice and better progressions to keep that balance at the right level of movement and energy!
dam ben you sponsored by nike now brothers always in fresh pairs haha
Nope. Just spent too much money a few times.
Sheesh I thought the double heel was the “proper” way 😭 I never really hang up but learning that oomf movement out to not hang that back wheel was….painful. I think I can aim and try this out cause I got FS smiths pretty solid. Thanks Ben.
What is that "oomf moment" you're talking about? :) Can you please explain?
@ the “oomf” I’m referring to is that little movement you would do when your like stationary on a ledge or coping balancing on your trucks and you have to like use your hips and your entire body to kind of push away from the ledge/coping so you can continue your line/trick. I call it the “oomf” because that’s almost the sound your making when you start learning this integral movement.
There's no such thing as the proper way. There's the proper way FOR YOU :)
It is personal preference. I double heel because it feels more stable to me.
Double heel is proper when stalling a back 50 & coming in on a front
Eu tenho essa duas manhas 😂😂😂😂
It might seem unusual but I do my backsides exactly how you say a fs should be. (i.e. the opposite of how you do a BS) Rear foot toe side wheel against the coping and front foot heel side wheel against the coping. I learned this naturally and it lent itself to grinding around bowl corners very easily (see my profile picture or some of my videos ) - exactly how you explained for your FS explanation but a mirror view.
It seems to me the way you do your bs mostly comes from street skaters or the post 2000 generation of skaters I don’t remember every seeing it that way before the street skating boom of the 2000’s so I’m presuming it came from people skating ledges.
Bitd it was most often a straight 5050 with no diagonal lock it would be done going much faster and a quick in and out , if you were going for a longer one you would just go faster and that still pretty evident today if you watch vert skaters, you don’t really see anyone hanging off their back wheel like that.
So there’s a few nuanced differences depending on how you learned and what your background and skate discipline history is.
But you are right in the sense of rolling across the top of the platform isn’t a true 5050 but I agree it’s great gateway to learning.
Mini Logo truck review? Soon? Maybe?
Hello Ben, this is off topic from the video but I was wondering if you knew the difference from TEAM thunder trucks and regular thunder trucks. I’ve also heard the rumor that all thunder are made Hi now.
TEAM has cast BP, and also regular thunder, but there are TEAM hollow, which means cast BP w/ hollow axle. little bit lighter and same height as regular ones.
there are no more thunder high or low, they make it one height only, but as width goes up, height also goes up, not like indy all 55mm/53.5mm.
145 147 148 149
50 50 52 52 mm
all forged BP should lower by 1~1.5mm

Jorts and dunks? Ben is getting trendy and I kinda like it
I'll try this but I heel lock both trucks and can grind for days and it feels fine getting out of it.
If you learn it cross lock it makes double heel side feel wrong. This is also the only way to do it safely on a spine.
@@bendegros That makes sense, I wouldn't dare do it on a spine the way I lock.
i never had any problems coming back in off of heel side, and if i do cross lock front 50s it’s toe side in the back much more steez. you might as well be doing a smith if you’re cross locked toe side in the front in my opinion
Exactly
ben in dunks 😦😦
What dad denim shorts you got goin there Ben? Haha
More will be revealed in due time :)
Do a krooked board review
Those jorts r literally so cool
I’m actually kind of a fan of them
@@bendegros Jorts, bro or dad? Being a short king, I could never rock Jorts.
Learn to deck both your rock n rolls those are a lot of fun
