The grand return of #18 has finally happened. After a while of being down for a 1,472 day inspection and overhaul, the only operating steam locomotive in New York has come back to steam. He's Baaaaaack
it's great to see No. 18 back in it's glory days once again, after it's long 7 year restoration rebuild it's finally back in excursions service. the volunteers really did a good job on adding the final paint details and the new lettering number on each side of the cab. i'm sure that 18 will have a great fall season of excursions trains for the autumn and halloween season. I might planned on returning to arcade again to have a ride behind No. 18 to see the engine in action. :)
This is so awesome, such a great achievement for this town, and so cool that the whole town comes out to support the return of their little steam train. No. 18 looks great. My dad and I visited and took 8mm movies of her back in the early/mid 70's !
@@paulzeigler7616I'd love to see the 8mm someday! I recently snagged two reels on eBay from the 70's with #14 and digitized them- It really felt like a community day and it was a blast!
Nice to see that the trains were well-patronized and the tracks were lined with admiring onlookers! Maintaining and operating a steam locomotive in 2024 is no easy feat, and we should never take them for granted. Kudos to the A&A employees for their excellent work, and to the railfan community for turning out in droves to show their support!
@@Voucher765 2102 is a gorgeous locomotive. It's crazy to think that #18 is the only regularly operating steam engine in NY. We need more! I'd love to see something the size of 611 or 1309 come online here in NY.
@CptnRetro 3001 just got restored so she should come to home rails here in NY because the NYC barley has any surviving steamers execpt her and that other Mohawk in St Louis
@@mason.com1030 Just bear in mind that as of right now the steam will only run until the temp drops to where keeping her warm is a pain- then they will switch to diesel.
Can't wait for the fall colors to really start taking effect! Wish i could have been there today but Covid got me at the right time. If you know how come they put 18 on "114's" track? Nice video!
I enjoy your A&A videos. One thing I've often wondered is why #18 has mismatching tender trucks? It looks not only odd but the rear truck makes the tender run "downhill" (so to speak) towards the cab.
@@dave6695 Good eye. It seems a concrete answer is lost to time until we stumble across paperwork from the past that explains it. Bear in mind that the frame of the current tender was originally paired with #14, so the logical story became that to allow the drawbar to mesh with #18 it had its trucks swapped, but that doesn't appear to be an actual issue so that reason is out. Best guess is that something went wrong with the original truck and they had to swap it out, presumably with something they had on hand. The downhill issue was fixed to some extent, modifications to the tender frame this overhaul aimed to lift up the "down" side.
@@jamesm6638 Should be every weekend until it starts getting cold. Check the railroad website for departure times. Evening trains (4:30- later) will likely be pulled by #113 still. Regular runs are 11am, 1pm, and 2pm dictated by the website
@@thomasabramson100 Correct, this railroad is located in Arcade, New York- (considered Western or upstate New York depending on who you talk to) - And the engine was built by Alco in 1920 at a New Jersey Alco facility!

It's a beautiful thing to hear that steam whistle ringing off the hills of arcade again!

This was really cool to see in person yesterday! Looks and sounds better than it ever did.

Welcome back 18, you have been missed dearly
They may have had their Hero Train excursion a while ago, but this is the true hero of the Arcade & Attica!
Great catches awesome chase and nice video
Awesome, 18 is a nice Consolidation and here we have 2102 to entertain the public and railfans

Awesome video!! Glad to see that New Yorks only operable steam engine is back!! 🚂
What do you know, she’s back! 😻
I'm thinking of going to arcade and Attica for the Christmas train. can't wait to see #18 back in running.

The Christmas trains are diesel powered. If you want to see 18, you will need to go during October.

Two reasons offhand, merely speculation. That track has the ash pit; and they needed to access another bay for the wine train after #18 returned.
Wow, 18 looks amazing.

@@CptnRetro: My first thought was what you mentioned...........a truck swap at some point and they used what they had or could easily obtain cheap.
@@CptnRetro I was told that the the front tender truck was added to allow the water to flow to the front of the tender
Hope 14 is next in line. She would need a new boiler if I remember correctly
i would think 14 would need a full rebuild seeing as it hasn't run since 1988-89. I would also awesome that it isn't regularly inspected.
How often are they planning to run and at what times of day?
