sky blue Humans are by far the most compassionate animal on the planet. Other animals have a lot to learn from _us._ Most animals are just too stupid to do anything evil, but give them the chance, and they _will_ do it. Watch more _wild_ animal videos and you will know what I mean. I just recently watched a video showing an elephant brutally stab and kill a buffalo with its tusks. I've watched zebra stomp a variety of small animals to death including baby zebras and other undulates, usually right in front of the mother. You might say, "hm? Maybe the zebra was killing the baby to mate with the mother?" Nope, he did it to other species babies too and even otherwise didn't seem to care about mating. Not to mention the numerous species of predators that eat their prey alive without regard to pain or suffering. My point is, even non-predatory animals can be absolute monsters. The only animals that aren't were raised by _humans._ Humans do bad things to each other, yes, but that is usually only the mentally ill and degenerate cultures. War doesn't count because animals would have war too if they were intelligent enough. Anyway, as far as we can see, we will be the only species to carry on Earth's legacy to the rest of the universe through interstellar travel. Humans are hands down the best animal.
Wow amazing. Animals are very receptive to music. When I play my sax just doing the warmups and long tones time and time again doves and other small birds will come to the window and listen for a bit.
Doves like music? That surprises me, but fits my theory on music. After having listened to music with a wild bird from 8 to 14 hours a day for 7 months, I've had some time to ponder how birds listen. They listen without distraction from a busy mind. Humans have minds that are triggered by music to think about stuff. Sophisticated listeners of music understand that thinking and listening conflict. Intense listening involves a quiet mind, and that's difficult to achieve. However, if you've got a birdbrain, like the little wild bird that roosted in my heater box, listening intently is natural and can be maintained all day. The bird found music to be most pleasurable, but it wasn't that simple. I think it did not like listening to music alone. Not in our case, at least, where the bird was so used to following what I did, that music got in the way of it's listening efforts. So, I couldn't leave music playing for the bird and then go do something, because the bird was compelled to keep tabs on me. It's as if it wanted to be involved in the action. As if we were nest mates. The bird has flown the coop, and I'm thankful, since the bird pestered me for music all the time, except when I was sleeping. But, if I were to yawn, or take a deep breath, it would tweet in order to get my sleepy ass out of bed.....to play music. All this sounds crazy, I know. This bird loves all kinds of music....you name it. That is different from most humans, who form strong preferences in music, being unable to listen to some types of music. I'm no scientist, and I don't play one on TV, but I think that music affects the primitive part of the brain, that humans "share" somewhat with other animals, but the advance part of the human brain either accepts that music or rejects it. Some people dislike all music. Some people only like a small portion of music, while others enjoy a wide range of music.
Knowing she's blind and reacting to these sounds for the first time..... it's amazing......she moves away when it sounds dark...but moves closer when it's comforting....this is incredible...
@@chavesa5 i think they knew when they made it, that it was for the sake of the future as well. That's how true scientists etc work for so little money. They know what they're doing matters for everyone
This is like playing the piano for somebody's old blind grandmother. Its her last and only enjoyment before she passes. Thanks for giving her enjoyment.
Her reaction when you start playing is so endearing. This really makes you realise we are all of one stock. And anything with a brain able to recognise patterns can feel something in music. No doubt her experience differs immensely from ours, but there is definitively something going on. What a find.
I have a humming bird that loves my guitar... she always sits on the head stock to listen... either that or she wants me to fill up the hummingbird feeder
ricsackPlays well apparently deaf people can “hear” music by feeling the vibrations. again, this is something i heard so don’t curse me out if i’m wrong
You can tell by the context of her body language how shes reacting to the different music. To me it seems like when shes still, she is really listening. when her ears flap, she is excited. when her trunk tenses, shes concentrating and thinking. when shes rocking back and forth I think she gets it or simply feels the music. even though we cant speak elephant, they CAN hear music and I believe that because she is blind, she can hear even more. this is am amazing thing Paul is doing. we have much to learn.
General JJ its already blind. It locates it's surroundings via sound and probably is very sensitive to sound. There's sudden foreign noise coming out of nowhere and she can't see the source either so she's probably just scared because she doesn't know what's happening and what the sound is
Wouldn't she have walked away if she was nothing but scared? I don't know how much of it is curiosity and how much is appreciation, but it's probably a safe bet that there's something more complex going on than just fear.
What a beautiful thing you are doing. I can only imagine the love flowing through you and the elephants you play to. These moments are how God intended us to live. ✝️❤️🔥🛐
So beautiful to see such kindness. Almost made me cry. Then I started reading the comments people left and I did cry. We need more of this kind of connectedness with the wonderful creatures on this planet. It's not "man's planet" it's ALL our planet. Hopefully one day the "blind" humans will see this.
Cory Avila I dearly wish I could share your optimism as I sit here in tears. Humanity is now a term that has become defunct in that it can no longer be used to describe any sense of kindness, compassion and honour. We, as a species, do not deserve to live as we do. I can’t stand much more: it’s all just got so much worse so very quickly.
Mindrolling In the 60s I read a sign "The scum of the earth is polluting its waters" ...it took 30-40 years for that to sink in..now 2018 at least we have Boyan Slat and are we waking up....
That was the thought I had as well. While it's beautiful to see Lam react to the music, what is even more inspiring is the time and care this gentleman put in to getting that music to Lam. Truly an act of love and selflessness. What a world this would be if we all had a little more of that.
Why an elephant sways: You have probably encountered elephants in captivity at some point, and maybe you noticed them displaying abnormal behavior like swaying back and forth or bobbing their head. Did it ever make you wonder ‘why DO elephants sway?’ Maybe it wasn’t just elephants. Have you seen lions pacing or parrots pulling out their own feathers? Animals in captivity have been placed in an un-natural environment. Even if they were bred in captivity, they still possess natural instincts that they will never be able to use like roaming long distances and hunting. This causes them to become mentally distressed, which leads them to perform abnormal behaviors. Now that's heartbreaking
She also can't see or hear how much some of us adore her. We're of one, so love; universally. Although I see 900 some odd dislikes. They're probably reptilian aliens.. bless em
With over a million views, it seems that many others agree with you. As a zoologist, I've worked with animals for most of my life, but I've rarely seen anything like Paul Barton's dedication to this beautiful old elephant; very touching.

Bach and other composers of this era brought something universal to this earth and the elephant understands that. I could cry! Elephants are such beautiful magical animals!
Phil Mclellan Haha Yes it is started off as a grand but it is probably just as well that it was trunkated a bit or she might never have herd the music and would have to trumpet herself. Of course she would not be paid. It would have been her trumpet voluntary
I wonder if she hears better out of her left ear. What a precious creature. She loves the Bach Prelude! Its so sweet how she sways back and forth. Thank you for bringing joy and healing to her. She really loves the Schubert Serenade. Thank you.
For some reason or other, I haven't cried in twenty years or more. A minute or so into this and for the first time in my life, two tears came falling down my face at the same time. Thank you for being so kind to that elephant. You must be a rare and wonderful human.
And why shouldn't this gentle highly intelligent creature not be able to enjoy the same pleasures as us.This guy has the best job in the world and has a discerning and grateful audience. Bless them both.
I'm lost for words in the happiest way. Actions speak much louder than words and the great kindness imagination it took to share his talent to give pleasure to the Elephant and us is awe inspiring. May it inspire us all to give some kindness whenever we can.
gp I would definitely prefer a world where these kinds of things are not appreciated because they are too much instead of one in which they are almost inexistent 😊
That might be a beautiful way to spend a life, but the word 'murder' brought hate into it, so for me there is much more beauty in giving a blind old elephant some joy.
Bryn Shortland I was just basing it off the fact that the elephant was standing still the whole time, as if it was actually captured by the sound of the piano. Of course, I might be completely wrong and maybe it just didn't feel like moving, but that's just the way I interpreted it. I'm more of a logical thinker than an emotional one too though, so I do get your point.

My cats love my awful singing ..I sing to them almost everyday, I make up songs with their names in the songs
It turns out animal does appreciate music. That's what I know
Doves like music?
You can easily know a man's heart by how he treats Animals

She's at a sanctuary in Thailand, so is well looked after.

She sways to the music....it's gotten into her Soul.... God bless!
I feel Bach must be smiling at this man and the elephant. And so is Schubert.
True. A true use of their music
I would like nothing more than to see them respond to knowing their music is being employed in this manner so many centuries after their deaths
@@chavesa5 i think they knew when they made it, that it was for the sake of the future as well.
That's how true scientists etc work for so little money. They know what they're doing matters for everyone
Her obvious trust in him and enjoyment of the music he played for her touched my heart! ❤️🇨🇦❤️
I want to hug that Elephant 😭

I respect you 🐍🐍😁👍🏽
She'd probably stomp you till you're half dead (it's a blind elephant)
Me too 😭😭

This is like playing the piano for somebody's old blind grandmother. Its her last and only enjoyment before she passes. Thanks for giving her enjoyment.
You can easily tell how much she enjoyed that. Such a great thing you're doing for these elephants
AWWWWWWWW!!! That is the cutest thing everrrr! You must do a video of that!!! :O

She's so pretty. TY for playing for her.
Lam Duan is so intently listening... unlike the sighted , her ears remain still , focused . Lovely .
She's blind can sense more.
What a beautiful thing to do for an unfortunate animal friend
Can you just stop and realise that an amazing video like this even exists?
Good point mate. This is something i never thought id see
You can tell by the context of her body language how shes reacting to the different music.
General JJ actually that's distressful behaviour
UwU Please explain why?
General JJ its already blind. It locates it's surroundings via sound and probably is very sensitive to sound. There's sudden foreign noise coming out of nowhere and she can't see the source either so she's probably just scared because she doesn't know what's happening and what the sound is
Wouldn't she have walked away if she was nothing but scared? I don't know how much of it is curiosity and how much is appreciation, but it's probably a safe bet that there's something more complex going on than just fear.
UwU But she knows Paul!
What a beautiful thing you are doing. I can only imagine the love flowing through you and the elephants you play to. These moments are how God intended us to live. ✝️❤️🔥🛐
Good to see Lam Duan actually listening to the music, and not texting on her smartphone during the performance.
LMAO!
Haha! So true
I hope everybody become blind
Michael Tyson Wow that escalated quickly. 😐
LOL. *puts smartphone down*
So beautiful to see such kindness. Almost made me cry. Then I started reading the comments people left and I did cry. We need more of this kind of connectedness with the wonderful creatures on this planet. It's not "man's planet" it's ALL our planet. Hopefully one day the "blind" humans will see this.
Best reply. Most apt.
Agreed.
Seeing that huge beautiful creature swaying to the Bach piece was heartbreaking. Such a great man to do that.
S P elephants sway when they are in stress.
Luca Bertani that was an amazing response. Poetry in an of itself
Lucas, that was beautiful. x)
If you didn't care what people thought, you wouldn't be posting these shallow comments on every other thread here. Boring. C'mon now.
The way she reacts to Bach's music is truly amazing and the pianist is playing pretty well too. Joyful!

With over a million views, it seems that many others agree with you. As a zoologist, I've worked with animals for most of my life, but I've rarely seen anything like Paul Barton's dedication to this beautiful old elephant; very touching.
@@drbob528 There are other videos of Paul Barton playing for elephants, including the elephant Peter, who gets really enthusiastic and joins in, thumping the keys with happiness. They also dance to the music, which is wonderful: jigging and bouncing around with total happiness. They are all on UA-cam under Paul Barton - Music for Elephants. Enjoy!
Bach and other composers of this era brought something universal to this earth and the elephant understands that. I could cry! Elephants are such beautiful magical animals!

@The Secret History You are good at parties
This blind elephant appreciates music more than some people do. That was fascinating to watch.
