well
*looks at mattel*
ya i think we're done here
Rev. Awdry was definitely someone who understood his creation
Rev. Awdry predicted the future
It was ruined long before Mattel, I wonder how the Rev. felt when he learned George Carlin, who was primarily known for doing vulgar stand-up routines at the time was going to narrate.
He’s right after all
True all engines go sucks
The term "tankie" is more commonly used to refer to Stalin apologists and supporters of USSR-style governance.
Pretty much anything Communist+Socialist is referred to me and my Twitter Followers as "Tankies" or "Commies", Stalin is Stalinist. Although it has been questioned on where it started, such as Tiananmen Square with the tanks to make them look bad, although in America there's been loads of footage of Police cars running Protesters over. (Although China is Capitalist after President Mao Zedong). Wiki's idea seems reasonable.
@@enthusiastisch1922 are you implying that nothing happend on the tianmen square and nothing ever happend to those students?
@@enthusiastisch1922 shut up tankie
The phrase tankie was coined by stalinists who used it to critique khruschev during the crack down on hungarian protests in 1956
The internet turned it around on marxist leninists and marxist leninist maoists
@@wommyu tiananmen square happened under the revisionist clique of Deng xiaoping amd Jiang zemin.
Both are capitalists (jiang zemin not even denying it)
Many of the protesters in tiananmen square had slogans praising Mao zedongs cultural revolution and asking for [centralised] democracy ( the type of democracy that mao's china had. Modern china doesnt)
Incase anyone who isn't a Thomas fan is reading this, please don't call us "Tankies" a lot of people in the fandom don't like it.
I'm gonna adopt this nickname in the fandom now, I liked it lmaooo
I think it will fit war tanks fans a little more...
The name just doesn’t work
lol ain't tankies the nickname ppl give to soviet flavor communists
Your name has Tanky in it..
As someone who’s inspired by Mr. Awdry, I too am pretty protected of my work. Because if there’s anyone who knows their original creation by heart, is no other than the creator themself. Handing the rights to someone else can easily destroy the charm the original creator had in mind.
“Once the Americans get a hold of it the whole series would be vulgarized and ruined- Rev W. Awdry. I am afraid he predicted how Mattel would ruin this amazing franchise.
4:23 _All Engines Go_ would probably make the whole series become "vulgarized and ruined".
yes mattel was not good
I agree with you
@@jamesthevain ok
Yep as thexway i see it from season one. Mattel themselves ar3 juet a big com0any who just wqnt to aim at younger kids just so they can get thier parents monry outbof thier damn bqnk accpunt so they can ruin tge franchise for seasons to come if they evrt decide to extend the series
So this might be a hot take, and I’m certainly going to get hate for this. But I actually really like All Engines Go.
The Americans don't realize how much of a cultural icon Thomas, and the Railway Series is to us British people. It's shameful what they've done to the Reverend's legacy.
It absolutely disgusts me when Americans just think Thomas is American. 'Well he calls them freight cars!'
@@wardproductions2792 As an American I've always called them freight cars, it's just what I grew up with.
@@wardproductions2792 well I’m American and I know Thomas is a British steam locomotive
@@wardproductions2792 Well not all Americans. I mean I pefer the realistic stuff over cartoonish stuff
Not all Americans are like this…..
Andrew Loyd Webber’s pilot for the animated series would later form into Starlight Express
It would also form The Really Useful Group.
Features:
The sad story of Henry (1953 (B.C?)
The animated pilot (1976)
Down the mine pilot (1983)
At 7:52 this was actually a mistake on the part of the crew member who shared the photo, he was simply misremembering as this Gordon model was reworked into the final model which also happened with Thomas. They'd already spent a lot of time and money on making the bodies so it would have been a waste to completely redo them. This is also the reason the Marklin chassis used for Thomas had to be so heavily modified, they had to extend the wheelbase to fit the body rather than make the body to fit the chassis like they did with Edward and James who share the same donor model as Thomas.
Rather than moaning about him not dedicating his time knowing what term is used to describe the fans, be grateful for the time and research he's put into this video.
EXACTLY
Fair enough, the vid was really good and there were hardly any mistakes, so honestly who cares?
I love hiw the first three comments I see are the Thomas fans complaining about being called Tankies... which, to be fair, sounds super demeaning.
Ukr
Sheesh, I'm beginning to wonder if the term _"Brony"_ is demeaning to the My Little Pony fans as well.
@@jamesb.6197 the word brony isn’t demeaning to us, but the reason why the thomas fandom is upset by the nickname tankies is because it’s actually a communist thing i think
No one calls them tankies
Everyone calls them tankies
As a fan of Thomas and friends can you please NOT call us Takies!
I prefer to be called “a boy who likes trains” or just simply “a Thomas fan”
@@Haha-Jim no
Tankie, brony, furry, they all end with the Eeee sound so it seems fitting
@@whackyzachy1482 Thomas fans should not be in the same category as Bronies or Furies
Hey Tankies
Great video, although next time I would prefer it if you gave credit to my video on VHS Vs HD remasters instead of cropping the footage and referring to me as a Tankie. Beg pardon of course but we don't like that sort of surprise XD

8:13 Why have I never heard of that until now? I've loved the series since I was a little kid and still do, and not once have I heard the term _"Tanky"_ ever used to describe the fans.
No we don't call ourselves tankies, we call ourselves Thomas fans just like anyone else who's a fan of a particular thing. The term came from a Thomas video that Mattel put out starring Neil Patrick Harris, it's meant to put us on the same level as bronies or something. Original Thomas is much different in tone, themes and style than the baby crap it got bastardized into once HiT Entertain took over. A fellow Thomas fan called UnluckyTug did a video listing the best classic Thomas episodes for people to watch in order to understand why the older following exists, and what made the original series work so well for audiences of all ages.
@Tank Slushy The HiT era had potential and I wanted to see it succeed. Mighty Mac the Fairlie engine, Hector, Madge, they were all great ideas, however in execution the HiT era as a whole falls flat on its ass. 3 strike you're out formula, characters out of character, baby-fied writing, that's why the HiT era has the reputation that it does. HiT wanted to transform Thomas into a brand for small children, like another Barney the Dinosaur. I don't know of any Thomas fan who rushes to watch HiT era episodes like the one about Billy, or Thomas pulling a single flatbed with a big balloon tired down to it for a clown show. I'd rather watch an episode like Brake Van where the spiteful breakvan who's the villain, dies and the part with his face gets lifted by the breakdown train. Another personal favorite of mine is Down the Mine, it wasn't spectacular but it had a bit of everything and it doesn't talk down to the audience. The most moral you ever got out of most classic episodes (if there happened to be one) was- "Don't be an ass". What was the moral of Rusty and the Boulder?
The classics still got some things wrong, for instance Edward was out of character when Harvey arrived which as a season 6 episode. James was depicted as red and not black upon his introduction. Thomas an the Tragic Failroad was stupid with it's whole magic theme and whack plot about human characters nobody came for, it hardly had anything to do with the series. Aside from a few exceptions, I think the classics nailed Thomas overall. They followed the RWS rather closely in spirit which set the standard of what Thomas is at heart.
Speaking of established standards, I love the Brennaissance that lasted from seasons 17 to either season 20 or 21. We got to see characters return to form, get some well written stories and new characters, and we got to see old characters return after years. In my opinion, I think Sodor's Legend of the Lost Treasure is the best Thomas movie because everyone is so much in character and how mature it is. I don't mind of something is new, it just has to do a good job. If it can do that then I gladly welcome it.
@Tank Slushy In the HiT era Edward is depicted as a weak pathetic loser, not an old engine who was still capable and wise. Same goes for Toby who is also reduced to a worry wort. Henry is a wimp and not his cynical self. Thomas is too nice and stupid, not a cheeky ass. Diesel is reduced to a very blunt bully, not the sly devious type who prowls around.
The HiT era was about shoving a moral down the audience's throats. Most people just want to enjoy Thomas. Also Michael Brandon I think is the worst narrator. As a fan in the U.S. I was stuck having to listen to his God awful narration until season 17 unless I found a Michael Angelis dub.
I brought up Magic Railroad because that's an example of a major flop the classic era had. Perhaps it could have worked had it been thought out better but it wasn't executed well. I was born after Shining Time Station was a thing in the U.S. and everyone else around the world never heard of it, so my generation and everyone else was like- "What the hell is this?"
But then again, even the HIT era had a few gems, and in my opinion, Season 8 is the best of that lot.
I ain’t reading allat 😐
As a thomas enthusiast I say good video!
God I remember watching old thomas as a kid and even having a bunch of the wooden trains. Good memories to last a lifetime.
Well looks like the Reverend was right thanks to America's getting ahold of Thomas it's ruined look at season 25
It wasn’t bad at first
@@maddalonefarms it's mainly because Britain was still in charge of the show while Mattel over in America was just the owners of the show however Mattel started butting in to the show then once they started budding in it got so bad that no one like the show all because Mattel didn't get that the reason no one was buying their toys was because the toys were terrible not the show

He was right I could only imagine what he would think about the reboot.
It would be interesting to see thomas in a cutout 2D animation than that cringe flash animation thst sadly called all engines go.
Me too
I wouldn’t say flash animation is the problem, rather they’re choosing to make the engines more fluid than solid. Trainsformers has a flash esq esthetic(although I’m not too sure if it is flash) yet doesn’t look half bad as a parody because it understands that they’re giant solid pieces of metal and not whimsical baby machines.
@@UltimateAnimations I don't hate Adobe Flash animation, I like Flash animation. But I wish Canada sometimes start going back to hand-drawn animation...
Edit: ...and paper cutout animation.
Your vids are so well edited and your voice makes this 100% better! Keep it up!
3:17 “the most James thing to James is being the only survivor image of an episode that has nothing to do with James” -Train boy
I never really liked Thomas the Tank Engine growing up. But I did like a little show on PBS called Shinning time station. It had George Carlin in it and that lady from Grease. Yes it did have little Thomas shorts but mainly focused on the characters in the train station
+Travis McDowell George Carlin. Shining Time Station was a framing device designed to introduce Thomas to American audiences, as PBS wouldn't accept the show unless its runtime was extended to 30 minutes. It's sad that Shining Time Station will probably never get a DVD release, but every episode of the show can be found on UA-cam.
The video is great and all, but the tankies part really made me want to die
really nice video, but i feel by mentioning 'tankies' (or really anything Thomas fan related) gen z people (or literally anybody outside the Thomas fandom) will find a reason to villainize and demonize us for just being Thomas fans. Trust me, it happens. (then again, mention anything thomas and people will start ridiculing you for liking it these days lol)
What does gen z have to do with anything?
Amazing. I would love for those pilots to be restored.
Do you have any beef with the cheeky E2 tank?
I like the end scene lol (good work)
Thanks for this video as I never knew about these shows that predates the Thomas the Tank Engine television series of the modern day.
This is awesome
Nice vid man, i like a lot those videos, i hope you make more videos about thomas the tank engine, it was my favorite show
When you had to mortgage your house but it’s all worth it in the end
But then it all falls apart
well worth the wait
can you call Thomas fans "Sudrians" instead of "Tankies"
No, grow up
You angered the Thomas fans by mentioning tankies
As a major thomas fan who owns a few props and shizs, i can assure you we do NOT like to be called tankies.
As a fan of Thomas the Tank Engine, don't call us Tankies! But hey, this video is great!!
I enjoy Thomas and I like to refer to myself as a Tankie, it's a real shame that there's a lot of people here who enjoy the franchise as much as myself but are embarrassed to it met there a fan or use the word of Tankies.
True fans don't hide in a closet
True fans can like or dislike fandom nicknames
Tankies just sounds wrong. I would rather be called a Thomas Fan
The real rare piece of lost media with Thomas the tank engine is the Beatles recording their version of the original theme song
"Once the Americans get hold of it, the whole series would be vulgarized and ruined"
I think Wilbert was foreshadowing Thomas' future once the 2010's come around...
Cosgrove Hall later animated "The Invasion"
I enjoyed it
Starlight Express is my most favorite musical, I wish more people knew about it
Nice video
The first 5 seconds had me laughing so hard for a good while.
I have given you the 1,000th like.
Lovely video, but side note- P.R. Wikeam had nothing to do with the 53 pilot. They most likely used Hornby dublo princes with no or little modifications. P.R. Wikeam would later build O gauge non-powered models as illustrators references.
Keep making that original content bro thank God
You'll be up there soon enough keep it up
the music that was used in the intro really should be the og theme, but I grew up with the roll call so...
But the use of that cover of the roll call in the intro is beyond respectable.
@@JintyGreen yeah
2:31 once an engine attached to a train, was afraid of a few drops of rain. He got derailed, then a hand had to put him back on the rails again
"Watch with Mother" is both a charming and hilarious title.
1983 thomas should be a backup model
The Pilot Thomas and Gordon were backups to the OG plastic body cast versions in the really early days. That was until the crew found no use for them and cut them up into background scrap dressings. People do argue when that was however (like how we don’t have a concrete date for when the pilot was produced - just sometime between 1980 and 1983), but if you look around you might find an interview or two about the whole thing.
That first video clip is actually quite terrifying
"...pacifically chosen..."
It’s Allcroft not Allcross
The second pilot is probably all engines go predictions
3:16 recently we got a rare photograph of James from the airing
The reason why the 1983 pilot was considered as lost media
Heres the reasons why: from the only remaining footage from the pilot.
The Thomas model was used with real steam.
If you can makeout the steam coming out of the eyesockets.
And the two models used for Thomas and Gordon was plastic not brass.
Sadly no remaining footage of Gordon on what it used to look like on the set.
I like the video besides the Tanki part an autocorrect hates as well finally I can agree with autocorrect on something

5:29 this should've been the new reboot
5:11 "feeling that the railway series just wouldn't have a mass appeal outside the UK"

Wait how many pilots had thomas?
I gotta say Thomas and friends was the nail in the coffin for the franchise dunno why but it just isn't the same.
Tankies? First I've heard of that.
The gordon model was actually remade into the one in the show
Thomas and the magic railroad was such a weird movie
First, BBC tried to bring The Railway Series to TV but with amusing results. Then, Andrew Lloyd Webber was a Thomas fan this whole time. Now, Britt Allcroft did it.
I started laughing at the "tankie" part
Andrew Lloyd Webber's love of engines later evolved into Starlight Express.
Toby was camilo in 1937
I would love to see Andrew Lloyd Webber’s pilot episode of Thomas and Friends that would be interesting
Is it really true tho? (About pilot Gordon model) because I heard it was rebuilt to the season 1 model, bufferbeem was brought up and smoke box was cut for longer faces and a new eye mover with a new chassie
